4 out of 5 stars "Memories Of A Rock N' Rolla" get better with this one!.......2007-06-23

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Traffic's 1974 "When The Eagle Flies" creates different and interesting points of view depending on which type of fan is pontificating.

The record buyer that enjoyed the plethora of incredible radio tunes not only doesn't have this in their collection but may not have even experienced the forty minutes of material.

The collector that has been fascinated with all directions the band has taken them is actually fond of the material.

Then there is the third and final segment. Those that may have gotten the LP as a gift or picked up a CD copy and played it one time but couldn't get past the non-commercial song structure. However, something in the back of their musical brain made them wipe off the dust and give it another listening. They were able to lock in on the seven tracks.

There were critics who misconstrued non-radio friendly for lack of effort or desire. That is unfair to somebody of Steve Winwood's caliber. He has proven repeatedly that if you give his material an honest ear the esoteric as well as the commercial songs have substance, desire, and skill.

The opening track is correctly titled "Something New." It is catchy without being poppy and the piano and voice accompany each other well.

"Dream Gerrard" is a long composition that puts in some jazz flavor. At over eleven minutes it is by far the longest track on the album. Don't be turned off. The music is always tasty and never too out of reach.

"Graveyard People" is at times dark and soft, but there is something hypnotic about it.

"Walking In The Wind" has noticeable bass-lines featured in the mix. Rosco Gee known for his work with the avant-garde, progressive, and improvisational band called "Can" leaves his mark throughout.

"Memories Of A Rock N' Rolla" seems deeply personal, solidified by lyrics about the past. We've gotten older but constantly wonder back to yesteryear.

"Love" Once again the jazz flavor is sprinkled throughout the song. It provides nice background music.

We finish with the title track. A bit sounds like "Freedom Rider" It's a nice end to one of the more underrated releases from the era.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

4 out of 5 stars A nice album but not the place to start.......2007-03-28

Back when this album first came out it was written off by just about everyone. This was the first Traffic album that was almost hard to find in record stores even when it was new. Thankfully, time and a loyal fanbase have been kind to it. As far as the album itself, it is very good although I wouldn't suggest anyone new to the band start here. The songs are good and the album provides a nice laid back listen.

4 out of 5 stars Truly an organic Traffic album....intense and wonderful.......2006-11-22

When the Eagle Flies was Traffic's final album, released in late 1973/early 1974. Back to a four piece band (Roscoe Gee takes on bass duties, augmenting the Traffic core of Winwood, Capaldi, and Wood), the sound is markedly different. In the liner notes, Steve Winwood says how this is an "organic" Traffic album, completely homemade, and it shows. I had never heard this album, only heard about it, for years. As a huge Traffic fan once it was available on CD, I knew I had to check it out. And while it isn't their best album, it's still a hidden gem in their catalog.

It opens up joyously with Something New, and the roughhewn, homemade sound (of the entire album) matches up almost perfectly with the rustic woodcut look of the album cover. It's followed by two brooding and intense numbers, Dream Gerrard (with a hypnotic riff motif throughout) and the funky jazzy Graveyard People. Walking on the Wind is another joyful-sounding song, while Memories of a Rock n Rolla veers between tounge-in-cheek humor and plaintive pleading from Winwood before ending with another joyful outro. The final two songs, Love (a short little piece recorded live) and the title track (a really moody, almost downbeat song that is the roughest sounding of the bunch) round out the album.

All in all a fitting, quiet, yet no less intense or masterful farewell from one of the most original and excellent band from that era. While this certainly would not be the Traffic album to start with if you're just getting into them, once you're immersed in their excellent music, this is well worth seeking out.

4 out of 5 stars A brooding mixture of jazz/rock/psych/pop with some mellotron and synths .......2006-05-21

This 1974 recording would be the last studio Traffic album released in the 1970s and returns (to my ears at any rate) to the formula established on The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (1971). One of the biggest differences between the two albums (and every other Traffic album for that matter), is that keyboard instruments including the mellotron and mini-moog synthesizer are used on When the Eagle Flies. As a massive fan of both progressive rock and analog synthesizers, I regard the new additions as a major bonus.

The musicians on this album include Steve Winwood (vocals, electric piano, acoustic piano, Hammond organ, mellotron, mini-moog synthesizer): Chris Wood (saxophone and flute); Jim Capaldi (drums/percussion); Reebop Kwaku Baah (percussion); and Rosko Gee (electric bass). This reflects yet another lineup shift that, with the exception of Rosko, saw Traffic fully using the core members once again - I am a big Capaldi fan so this was very exciting. The previous two albums had augmented the core group with studio musicians.

The seven tracks range in length from 3'15" to 11'01" and include five brooding and gloomy tracks (Dream Gerrard; Graveyard People; Walking in the Wind; Love; and When the Eagle Flies); and two somewhat more upbeat tracks that occasionally groove in a vaguely funky (yet very English) way. All of the tracks feature tight musicianship and stylistically the music on this album is in keeping with Traffic's distinct synthesis of jazz-rock, psychedelic, and pop. Of the seven tracks, the lengthy 11'01" Dream Gerrard (with it's tons of mellotron) is a personal favorite, although the sad closing track When the Eagle Flies is right up there too.

The remastered CD features the restored artwork, excellent sound quality, and informative liner notes.

All in all this is a great Traffic album that is recommended along with The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys (1971), Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory (1973), and the live album On the Road (1973).

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked gem.......2006-03-23

This album has often been overlooked by fans who opt for the more well-known gifts such as Low Spark, Mr. Fantasy, Shootout, etc., but it should not be missed. Later in the careers of the dynamically changing ensemble, this album has some of Traffic's sweetest gems. Feelings roll through the mind as a bunch of superb musicians take you to places and scenes often long forgotten. The title track reminds me of how optimistic we could be about our world with dreams of revival and cleansing. "Memories of a Rock N Rolla" takes me back to a time I dreamed of being that star; dancing around my basement singing "And the music is so sweet, that it makes me tap my feet". Ah, it's like sitting in a cool breeze on top of a green rolling hill and just feeling high. I highly recommend this work for anyone with a mind that enjoys expansion. Enjoy and dream on.

5 out of 5 stars One of Dolly's finest albums.......2004-06-14

Dolly recorded for Columbia during the late eighties and early nineties, during which time she had three number one country hits during that period, the last of them (Rocking years) coming from this album. Rocking years was originally intended to be a duet with George Jones but he left the label so Ricky van Shelton became the duet partner. The success of the single may have owed more to Ricky (who was fashionable at the time) than Dolly, as American country radio only showed limited interest in the other singles from this album. Despite a lack of airplay, the album sold in vast quantities (well over a million in the USA) and deservedly so.

The songs are mostly excellent, though I confess that the lyrics of Family stretch credibility to the limit. Dolly says that the family is a strong unit and suggests (more eloquently than I can describe) that people will forgive other family members anything. I wish families were as united and strong as Dolly sings, but it's not my experience and I don't know of any family that lives up to the ideals expressed in the song. Maybe Dolly was just doing some wishful thinking when she wrote the song, or maybe her family really is that strong.

The other songs are much more realistic. The two other country hits, Eagle when she flies (an inspiration to women) and Silver and gold (a song about love being more important than money) are among Dolly's finest songs ever. Dolly original recorded What a heartache for the Rhinestone soundtrack but re-recorded it for this album and again for her more recent Halos and horns, so although it wasn't a single it might sound familiar to you, although each recording is distinctive.

Best woman wins, a song about two women fighting over a man, features Lorrie Morgan, although Dolly does most of the singing so perhaps she wins that battle. Other great songs include If you need me, Wildest dreams and Dreams do come true and Runaway feelings, but may favorite here is the upbeat Country road, a song about the love a country woman has for a man from the city.

This overlooked gem will forever be one of my favorite Dolly albums.

Amazon.com essential recording

Dolly Parton's solo albums of the '80s and '90s are as spotty as a Dalmatian in a leopard-skin coat, as she moved from writing powerful ruminations on isolation and loss, to playing good ol' gals in the movies and dueting with hunks du jour to stay on the charts. With Eagle she manages to rid herself of the tacky production that marred many of her latter releases, only to lose ground to an age-old problem: Parton seems not to be able to weed out her worst work, witness "Dreams Do Come True," a musical romance novel in which she whispers the gooey line, "Like the morning sun, his love moved across every inch of my body." Once out of Janet Dailey mode, however, Parton shines on a host of understated songs, including "Rockin' Years," with Ricky Van. Although it would be years before she made another album equaling the brilliance of her early work, Eagle finds a spark of new promise. --Alanna Nash

I have been looking for this CD forever. Am so glad to have found it.

4 out of 5 stars She's an eagle when she flies.......2004-03-30

This is a nice album from Dolly. It was released after her successful return to country music with 1989's WHITE LIMOZEEN. This album also gave Dolly a few more hits, and the album went platinum. The album opens with the bluegrass tinged "If You Need Me". "Rockin Years", with Ricky Van Shelton, was Parton's last #1 hit on the country charts. "Silver And Gold" reached #15, and the title track #33. The title track is a very positive ballad, and stands as yet another classic Dolly Parton song. There's a fun duet with Lorrie Morgan called "Best Woman Wins". "What A Heartache" is updated from the RHINESTONE days. "Family" is a nice ballad, very true in it's context. The closing "Wildest Dreams" has become a favorite song of mine, a very nice positive ballad. Overall a nice album from Dolly.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant CD.......2002-07-17

Dolly Parton's 1991 album EAGLE WHEN SHE FLIES is pleasant enough for a CD. We have the big hits, "Rockin Years" - a duet with Ricky Van Shelton, Dolly's last #1 hit, and last top 10 hit. The title track is one of her more poignant and beautiful tracks, a song about a woman finding strength. However it failed to impress country radio, their loss, it hit #33 on the charts. "Silver and Gold" is another hit from the album, a touching tale. "Silver and Gold" hit #15 on the country charts. While EAGLE WHEN SHE FLIES isn't her strongest, there is some good material here. "Wildest Dreams" is a really beautiful song, really touching. "Dreams Do Come True" is a song about love at first sight, and finding someone after so many wrong guys. "Best Woman Wins" includes Lorrie Morgan, a spirited duet about two women fighting over the same man. "Family" is a song about how family accepts everyone, from any walk of life, and how diverse a family can be with its people. Overall its a pleasant album and worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars Thank God for CD Writers.......2001-02-28

Half the songs on this album get five stars. The rest don't merit one star. The great songs don't deserve a two stars and the horrid songs don't deserve four stars. So, there is a compromise of three stars.

I heard Rocking Years and wanted the album. I heard Eagle When She Flies and my desired picked up. Then I heard Silver and Gold, and I had to have the album. Still, I've never listened to but a few notes of some of the songs, my hand automatically reaching to the forward button on my cd player. The great songs on this album make it worth your while. Just get a rewrittable CD and edit the others out.

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful but Sad Farewell.......2003-05-22

Tragedy befell this band in spades, and as the life expectancy of this group wound down, they somehow found what it took to create a beautiful, if sad farewell. The eagle that flew had a certain life force for them, and when you think how soon after this Chris Wood was gone, it is a bit heartbreaking.
But Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood were in absolutely brilliant form for this. "Dream Gerrard" and the title track are songs for the ages. By this time, Winwood and Capaldi were really becoming adept in the studio, and you'll find a load of sonic gems throughout this remastered disc. This is nearly essential if you are a Winwood fan, and absolutely so if Traffic inspired you. This was their Abbey Road.

5 out of 5 stars Alan Caylow talks sense!!!.......2003-04-24

I have finally found someone who appreciates Dream Gerrad. In my final year of university last year it was the one song I listened to all the time! Oh, and just why AREN'T Traffic in the Hall of Fame?????

    5 out of 5 stars A fitting Swansong.......2003-03-09

Like others who have reviewed this album, I owned a cassette copy many years ago, but an annoying series of skips and tape hiss marred this beautiful record. This CD version eliminates both of those problems and gives this gorgeous music the proper sonic treatment it deserves. If you are a fan of Low Spark of High Healed Boys, you will love the extended jams on this album. Chris Wood never sounded better, and Steve Winwood's lyrics are poignant. This is a terrific album!

4 out of 5 stars After all these years..........2003-01-01

It was a long wait; finding this recording on CD. After owning LP, cassette, and Japanese LP editions of WTEF; I find the CD to be the most satisfying of all.
Of course the Japanese disc offered slightly better dynamics...but also amplified hiss and made Capaldi's highhat sound like someone going "pssst!".
The low threshold of background noise was just made for songs like "Walking in the Wind"...allowing the song's heart to beat, and the intensity to ebb forward as Winwood and Co. intended...until some miracle of technology totally trumps the CD...this fine old record has a new home in my collection.
