Some magical ingredients.......2007-04-04
Queen on this album pay homage to a number of masters. Firstly this album was basically a soundtrack album - most particularly to the cult classic film Highlander. As such there are certain emotions you'd expect would need to be addressed, and Queen, with their multi-faceted talents, are well suited to the task of writing an album that deals with a range of human feelings. Taken as an album in it's own right though this has some positives and negatives.
It scores one star for the wonderful, stupendous, gut-wrenching, glorious (I'm flicking through my thesaurus here), brillian, poignant and touching Forever. A song so great on it's own but forever intertwined in peoples minds with the fate of Freddie Mercury and the sequence of the Highlander film it was featured in.
The album scores another star for the pristine production, very clinical and clean. Another star is given due to the ability of the band to pen whimsical nonsense such as Pain is so Close to Pleasure alongside mega cheesy racket like Princes of the Universe (proto power metal perhaps?) and 80's electro pop in the form of A Kind of Magic.
A fourth star is granted for the fine performances as here the band show that whatever genre they were addressing they could play it. And Freddie is truly in fine voice, all tenderness and melodrama like the circus master he was.
This version has three extra tracks, remixes and alternate versions of already included tunes. So the effort put a little extra in as well as the bravery of deciding to be highly associated with a film over which they had no control earns the group another star.
But hang on - I've only given this thing three stars!?! Well the reason for that is the album loses a star because the nonsensical, whimsical style of much of the pop tunes hasn't aged well. Another star is lost due to a combination of the fact that the extra tracks only serve to make the album overlong and add nothing to the release and the fact that one gets the feel that this is perhaps mostly along the lines of Freddies ideas and perhaps less of a work by the band. After all for such multi-instrumentalists to hang up their gear in favour of synths and sequencers must of come as a move made with some regret.
For the listener willing to delve there are some real gems here but this is not essential. Queen devotees will lap this up, but then they lap up anything put out under the Queen banner, approaching Deep Purples fans levels of lack of perspective.
SO COOL!!.......2007-03-12
this makes the 5th copy of this cd that I have bought through the years..
still love it after all this time..
Totally recommend it for any "Highlander" movie fan.

A Different magic.......2007-03-06
This album was released in the summer of '86 when Queen's radio airplay was at a rather low point in the U.S. and at a very high point in Europe.By now,the band had adventured into pop genres beyond rock, yet colouring their songs with their distinctive style of interpretation and playing. Here we find the gorgeous ballad ONE YEAR OF LOVE and the catchy FRIENDS WILL BE FRIENDS.The ominous anthem WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER and the Highlander themed PRINCES OF THE UNIVERSE are gems in this crown. The first two USA singles, the rocker ONE VISION (from Iron Eagle)and the danceable A KIND OF MAGIC barely cracked the US Top 40 in a decade when alternative music was preferred and classics were often overlooked
Awesome .......2007-02-12
Every song rocks. One of the best Queen albums I have ever heard.
queen continues to pop you!.......2006-11-28
Another pop sounding record for queen. The record starts off with a good rocker in "one vision" then goes pop on you. That's not a bad thing. The title track "magic," one year of love and the silly but catchy pop/diva song "pain and pleasure" tells you that queen wern't worried about hitting it big again in america. The best part of the album are brian may's "who wants to live forever?" and the hard hitting freddie song "princess of the universe" It might be more on the pop side of things, a little more than the majority of queen fans would like, but it's a good fun record. P.S....Don't expect A night at the opera!

Customer Reviews:
Delightful!.......2007-01-19
What a beautful voice and such an artist. I've always loved Wunderlich's voice and this album was such a delightful surprise to happen across. The Pearl Fishers' duet with Herman Prey is spectacular--it would be even better than Bjoerling/Merrill if it were in the original French!
A Great and Varied Collection.......2005-12-19
Fritz Wunderlich is a name that is familiar to opera buffs, at least those who enjoy the great singers of the past, but his name is not as familiar with the general public. It probably would have been, had it not been for a tragic and fluke accident that claimed his life. For those who are familiar with this great tenor, he's a beloved musician that makes listeners wonder what could have been.
Wunderlich's voice is one that can be light and airy at times, yet it can also have a dramatic intensity. This two disc set includes a variety of pieces that display Wunderlich's wide range and great vocal talent. His excerpts from Mozart are perhaps his strongest. So often the tenor roles in Mozart operas are cast with performers who are agile and can reach the higher notes, but their voices are somewhat weak. Wunderlich shows just how beautiful these arias can be. The same holds true for his arias from EUGENE ONEGIN and the pieces from well known operettas. His "Au Fond De Temple Saint" performed with Hermann Prey (a dream team pairing if there ever was one) is close to the Bjorling/Merrill rendition. We see his versatility in the excerpt from Haydn's CREATION and the live performance of "Di Rigori Armato" from DER ROSENKAVALIER is a treat and allows the listener to compare his live and studio recordings. The bonus DVD has a few slight flaws, but we see, at least in the scenes from THE BARBER OF SEVILLE that he not only has a wonderful voice but a good stage presence as well.
Most of the tracks are performed in German, even the Bellini, Bizet, and Verdi tracks, as was the case in many of the recordings of famous German singers. This may detract at first, especially of we expect to hear gorgeous French singing and it comes out, well German sounding. Still, it's a wonderful set with great variety and shows us what we missed in this tenor whose career had just begun.
MAGIC is a good word to describe Fritz Wunderlich.......2005-11-08
Magic is a good word to describe Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), and if you aren't already familiar with his work, you'll see why when you experience this CD.
Many of the tracks are not new to CDs: I'd say 50% of them are also in the "Art of Fritz Wunderlich" set (DG, 7 CDs), including Handel, Mozart, Bellini, and other opera arias. There are 3 tracks from "Don Giovanni" which I had not encountered elsewhere, and a scene from Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" + 5 Strauss Lieder (with orchestra) not previously released in recent years.
Wunderlich was never less than the very best, and here is no exception. The bonus DVD has almost 30 minutes of scenes of Wunderlich (Count Almaviva) in Rossini's "Barber of Seville", sung in German with Hermann Prey (Figaro) and Erika Koth (Rosina) from a 1959 black and white TV production, in very good mono sound; and two scenes from Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin", also sung in German, and with a young Brigitte Fassbaender (a little more hiss but very good, full, rich mono sound). The Rossini is available from English sources, and hopefully will be available in the US soon.
Like conductor Karl Bohm (1894-1981), I'm going to try to get as much Fritz Wunderlich material as I can find, CD or DVD, as is practical (and even when it isn't!).

Customer Reviews:
Superlative collection.......2006-10-11
A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete works recorded between 1955 and 2003. It includes selections from operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French composers are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And there are several more obscure contributions, such as an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A well-judged balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDS, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !
Great value for the money.......2006-04-23
This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.
Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07
This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.
Amazing Value.......2005-08-23
I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, but just SOME of the very best of Nicolai Gedda.......2005-07-03
This is but a subset of the glorious recorded singing by Nicolai Gedda; however, it is a good sampler of the repertoire that made him legendary. And, at least a couple of the tracks ("Asile Hereditaire" and Lenski's aria) seem to be his best recordings of those particular works. Gedda is a member of a small circle of famed tenors noted for disciplined and artistic vocal production. He could find and consistently produce the "ping" we all love to hear. And, that was necessarily accompanied by flawless breath control. He holds the last note of the rousing "Hereditaire" for approximately eleven seconds! Onward! Ho! The emotion and delicate treatment he showed in Lenski's aria is a high-water mark. I can not imagine it being done better.
I first heard him in a recording of La Boheme (with Freni) in 1975 and have heard him in person both in Faust (1976) and in recital (1981). Whether on stage or in recording, Gedda is remarkable and consistent. If you are new to opera or are younger and addicted to the stars of today (and some of them are very good too), you should hear Gedda. It will raise your definition for what it takes to be a great tenor. Go find a recording of Fritz Wunderlich too.
Excellent compilation.......2005-01-30
Beautiful, easy lyric tenor; also great diction and phrasing -- a good example to any tenor on how this rep. should be sung.
Nicolai Gedda . . . the 4th tenor.......2004-06-13
Those of you who know the three tenors should look into this incredibly versatile singer. The first time I heard this remarkable tenor sing was from a recording of Mozart's Magic Flute. From then on I became an avid fan. This recording highlights how Gedda could go from singing lyric repertoire, to the bigger and more difficult French and Bel Canto and even tackling Russian and operetta. Any aspiring tenor and dedicated opera fan would do well to own this CD set.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer Dieskau with Deutsche Grammophon.......2005-11-08
"An die Musik", aptly named after the famous Schubert lied of the same title, is an excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's recorded output for Deutsche Grammophon over the past 56 years. On the CDs, there are six Schubert lieder from Fischer-Dieskau's 21 disc set with pianist Gerald Moore, (dating from ca. 1970) and other lieder by Wolf, Richard Strauss, Brahms, and Schoeck. Also included are two chansons of Claude Debussy, and arias from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" and "Don Giovanni", both conducted by Ferenc Fricsay; small part of Fricsay's Orff "Carmina Burana" (rec. 1949), Schubert's "Dichterliebe" cycle with pianist Jorg Demus; and the 4 Ruckert lieder with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic. Fischer-Dieskau is amazing, with such a wide repertory, and such enthusiasm for singing such varied and different styles of music.
The bonus DVD, lasting about 28 minutes, is very interesting to watch and listen to. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and pianist Sviatoslav Richter peform 8 famous Schubert lieder in the great room of a hotel in a remote Bavarian village, in utterly charming and rather informal surroundings. The camera work is minimal, the sound, very fine but a little low level mono: filmed in 1978. Fischer-Dieskau looks alot younger here than more recent photos of him, but a little older and more classy than the photos I'm used to seeing of him, which date from the late 1960s. Fischer-Dieskau and Richter work as one, and their partnership and great working relationship is evident from measure 1. There is no doubt watching this that they had alot of fun performing for the cameras.
I am grateful DG released this set: 2 very full discs at over 70 minutes of music each, + the DVD of a telecast not seen since 1978. The sound is very good, even in the mono tracks, and if you like lieder and opera excerpts, you will be delighted. I mention this as one who's experienced Fischer-Dieskau's recordings for 25 years, and been usually delighted by them.

Customer Reviews:
Queen's second attempt at the movie music thing is another excellent album.......2006-03-27
A Kind Of Magic (1986.) The twelfth Queen studio album. Features music from the films Iron Eagle, Highlander, and other non-soundtrack songs.
INTRODUCTION:
It was the middle of the eighties. And by this time, most people's musical interests had changed immensely. Most of the so-called classic rock bands who had dominated the musical scene in the seventies had either died out, or become mere shadows of their former selves. Queen was one of the most popular musical artists of the seventies, but by the eighties, they had faded out of the spotlight. Despite the band not being as well recognized as they had been in the past, they continued right on making music. The band tried plenty of new things come the eighties, including experimenting with the trends of the day, and unfortunately, many fans who were expecting the seventies all over again were disappointed. This was a shame, since the music they were creating was still excellent. Fortunately, the band was popular enough that they were recruited in 1986 to record music for the film Highlander! What resulted was the A Kind Of Magic album, featuring songs the band recorded for that film, and several more. Read on for my review of this album.
OVERVIEW:
Queen released A Kind Of Magic on June 3, 1986. As usual, the band consisted of the standard cast of characters, featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor. he band produced the album, along with producers Mack and David Richards. Guest musicians include Spike Edney and Joan Armatrading.Tracklist features One Vision, A Kind Of Magic, One Year Of Love, Pain Is So Close To Pleasure, Friends Will Be Friends, Who Wants To Live Forever, Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme), Don't Lose Your Head, and Princes Of The Universe.
REVIEW:
The material Queen released in the eighties is definitely among their most heavily neglected material. Why? The band's eighties material is all great, and it's such a shame that fans overlook and bash it just because it sounds different from their seventies stuff. This is another damn fine piece of work from Queen, even though it is more intensive on the eighties-style music. IT's not a Highlander soundtrack by any means, though, as these songs are actually alternative takes from the film versions. Likewise, one of the songs was actually used later in Iron Eagle, and the others aren't from any movie. Despite being alternative versions, though, these versions of the songs still rock. Read on for track-by-track comments!
-SIDE A-
-One Vision (Deacon/May/Mercury/Taylor):
The band kicks off the album with a song they wrote together. And it's one of the best Queen songs of all time, hands down. The band frequently tried to fuse elements of their hard rock and pop rock sounds, and while they succeeded many a time, no song captured the essence of that idea the way this one did. A masterpiece. The song was later featured in the film Iron Eagle, and was not used in Highlander.
-A Kind Of Magic (Taylor):
One of the most popular songs to emerge from this album is the classic title track. The band's classic eighties pop-rock sound is put to good usage here. For many fans of the band, this is the song that pretty much sums up this phase of the band, and rightfully so. It's a good sample of what the band was doing in this day and age. An alternate recording appeared in Highlander.
-One Year Of Love (Deacon):
John Deacon serves up one of his signature love songs. This is a very slow and melodic piece, with classic eighties-style instrumentation. Deacon even throws some horn-playing into the mix, to keep things interesting. One of Deacon's most unique, excellent, and underrated compositions. An alternate recording appeared in Highlander.
-Pain Is So Close To Pleasure (Deacon/Mercury):
John Deacon and Freddie Mercury serve up pure eighties pop bliss with this track. There's not much else to say - this is pure pop, and it's actually a pretty good song. A lot of people diss Queen for doing the eighties pop thing. Why? This song shows just how good they could do it, too. One of the few songs on here that wasn't in Highlander.
-Friends Will Be Friends (Deacon/Mercury):
Another Deacon/Mercury number, and another damn good one. One of the most popular thing for rock bands of this era to do were power ballads, and in many ways, you could call this Queen's attempt at a power ballad. The results are amazing, and it's a shame this never became one of the band's more popular songs. Arguably the album's best song. One of the few songs here that wasn't in Highlander.
-SIDE B-
-Who Wants To Live Forever (May):
Orchestral arrangements, synthesizers, and vintage Brian May guitar playing come together in this composition. The result - one of the finest pieces the record has to offer. The latter half, which is the more guitar-intensive part of the song, is particularly great. Awesome song. An alternate recording appeared in Highlander.
-Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme) (May):
This piece is more of a return to the hard rockers Brian May is best known for, and his return to normalcy is an excellent one. This guy plays his instrument like no other man alive, and perhaps this track demonstrates that better than any other cut on the album. Another solid cut. An alternate recording appeared in Highlander.
-Don't Lose Your Head (Taylor):
It wouldn't be a Queen album without a Roger Taylor rocker, now would it? Of course not, so we get one here. It's straightforward and drum-intensive, and it's got plenty of keyboards and synthesizers backing it. What we get in the end is a damn fine tune, and definitely one of Taylor's defining compositions of the eighties era. An alternate recording appeared in Highlander.
-Princes Of The Universe (Mercury):
Closing out the album is a classic Freddie Mercury piece that brings a nice sense of closure to the album. It combines his classic melodic and anthematic musical stylings with the eighties rock ones the band was intensely using in this age. What results is a damn fine last track for the album. Great closer. An alternate recording appeared in Highlander.
OVERALL:
In the end, we're left with another great Queen album. The band once again creates an excellent set of tunes for a feature film. The band never did a bad album, but sadly, their eighties albums tend to be wrongfully neglected by the fans, and this one is no exception. If you're a fan of the band, this one is well worth picking up. It's not really a good starting point for new fans, but if you're already a fan, go for it!
EDITION NOTES:
This album was reissued in the nineties by Hollywood Records. The reissued versions of the albums on Hollywood feature bonus tracks. These are usually nothing remarkable, being that they usually are just bland remixed, but occasionally you'll get a good little rarity like a B-Side or an alternate take. There are also slightly-expanded liner notes and lyrics. And since these compact discs are the readily-available versions of the albums in America, they're the obvious choice to buy.
Pseudo-Highlander Soundtrack But with Some Great Tunes!.......2005-10-09
This album could be very loosely described as the "soundtrack" for the "Highlander" movie because it contains much of the music from the film itself but it's not quite what has in mind when one thinks about a soundtrack. There are no scores here like in the "Flash Gordon" album and there are other songs that do not appear in the movie. The first track, "One Vision" actually comes from another movie, "Iron Eagle" and the title track is not connected to either movie. Still, the tracks are quite strong on their own merits and there are bonus tracks here, remix versions of the title track and "Friends Will Be Friends" and "Forever" which is a keyboard instrumental version of "Who Wants to Live Forever". Not Queen's best work but then to be honest, Queen's work had been erratic ever since "The Game" but still a decent offering and worth a listen. This Japanese lp mini-replica version has been remastered but the bass levels seem a little too heavy but it's very well packaged. The album has never sounded or looked better. Recommended if you liked the movies or if you liked the singles.

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Recording! Must Have!.......2001-08-06
Though some would argue that there are still greater recordings i.e. Solti conducting, Karl Bohm and the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, but Karajan, noted conductor and greatly admired, delivers here an excellent recording. The highlights include the great scenes from the four operas in Wagner's Ring cycle. The incredible Ride of the Valkyries here, especially, is very good, and the cast includes talented singers, among them Edda Moser. Karajan, always trying to perfectionize his works, does not really sway from the intense drama of the opera. The Immolation scene, in which Siegfried has been slain by Hagen and Brunhilde is left with the ring, standing over his funeral pyre and eventually throwing herself in it, is exceptional. The cries of "Zuruck Vom Ring" by Wotan as the majestic music of the finale reaches climax is superb. Karajan has outdone himself again.
