When Pat Benatar tore onto the scene in the late '70s, her stage presence and attitude were just as formidable as her talent. One of the new breed of women in rock, Benatar, a trained opera singer, assumed all of the rock poses from her male lead singer counterparts and delivered each song with a take-no-prisoners attitude. "Heartbreaker," her first single, was a big monster of locomotive hard rock. Its throaty, growling, and suggestive vocal style established Benatar as a contender in an arena championed by the likes of Robert Plant. Benatar also took cues from the hard rock catalog of tricks with "Hell Is for Children," building the song from a near-ballad into an all-out ballsy rocker. "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" had her combining her edge with a knack for strong melodies. "Promises in the Dark" and "Fire and Ice" continued in the same vein with guitarist Neil Giraldo's furious fretwork holding up to Benatar's vocal pyrotechnics. Best Shots also chronicles the less stellar singles, with the annoying "Love Is a Battlefield," and "We Belong to the Night." Benatar's fire burned brightest in the beginning and it seems best to remember her that way. --Steve Gdula

this is a good CD. but it is missing something(s) treat me right and crimson and clover. Pat did a good job on both of these songs.
This "best of" compilation has only one positive........2005-09-06
The only positive to this CD is that it includes the album tracks. "All Fired Up! The Best of Pat Benatar" and the remastered "Greatest Hits" both use the single versions of a handful of songs. This 15-song selection ommits a few good tracks, inlcuding "Treat Me Right", "Little Too Late", and "You Better Run". The sound quality is also below par.
Boy, Am I Glad I Got "Greatest Hits" Instead Of This.......2005-07-14
In my opinion, Pat Benatar is the reigning first lady of hard rock (with Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart in second), and when you have had a career as prolific as hers, casual fans are left with a barrage of skimpy greatest hits and best of collections to choose from. In 1989, the 15 track "Best Shots" was released. 15 years later (and even after the release of the 10x superior "Greatest Hits"), this collection is still on the market. Should you buy "Best Shots"? Here are the positives and the negatives.
Positives:
-Whether you get this or "Greatest Hits", you are getting some of the greatest hard rock ever recorded, including rock radio classics like "Heartbreaker", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Hell Is For Children", "Love Is A Battlefield" and "We Belong".
-It includes an unreleased live version of "Hell Is For Children", done as a medley with "Suffer The Little Children" (a trakc originally found on 1988's "Wide Awake In Dreamland").
-This collection does include the unedited version of "Love Is A Battlefield". This is the only collection I know of that includes it.
Negatives:
-This collection leaves out a ton of essential and well known Benatar classics, including "You Better Run", "Treat Me Right", "Precious Time", "Anxiety (Get Nervous)", "Little Too Late", "Looking For A Stranger", "Ooh Ooh Song", "Sex As A Weapon" and "La Bel Age (The Best Years)". The omissions of "Treat Me Right" and "Little Too Late" are especially puzzling, considering both were top 20 hits.
-The sound isn't all that great.
-We really did not need the live version of "Hell Is For Children".
-"Painted Desert" and "Outlaw Blues" are good songs, but aren't among her best shots.
-Worst of all, this cd doesn't even come close to filling the eight minute time limit a cd will allow. This cd only has a run time of 66 minutes and 34 seconds. That's almost 15 minutes worth of space. Plus, if you got rid of the the live track and "Painted Desert" and "Outlaw Blues" and replaced them with the tracks I mentioned, you'd have the definiitve Pat Benatar collection.
My advice is to skip this skimpy collection (the only reason I rated it three stars, is because I find it hard to rate anything by Benatar as a whole less than five stars). You should go out and pick up the recently released "Greatest Hits", which is superbly remastered and includes all 17 of her chart singles as well as three great album tracks. "Best Shots" just isn't needed anymore.
Don't buy this........2005-06-11
Best Shots was always an irritatingly incomplete experience plagued with poor sound quality and the most random of sequencing.
Fortunately now there is Greatest Hits, which includes all of these tracks plus all of the missing hits digitally remastered and packaged with some real liner notes.

Great combo from the queen of '80s rock!.......2005-05-12
"Best Shots" is a very good "Best of" collection. It includes all the biggest hits, including "We Belong," "Invincible," "We Live For Love" and "Heartbreaker." Sadly, the CD ignores some of her hits, like "Little Too Late," "Le Bel Age" and "Sex As A Weapon" in favor of non-hit songs like "Outlaw Blues." Still, what's here is cream-of-the-crop stuff, so you can't go wrong with this CD (although two versions of "Hell Is For Children" is overkill).
The DVD is simply fabulous. It contaains loads of music videos that range from hysterically awful ("Precious Time") to devastatingly beautiful art ("Somebody's Baby" -- this one will bring tears to your eyes). While the videos are a treat, the optional commentary from Pat and Spider ROCKS! This musical duo doesn't hold back on making fun of themselves and badmouthing their suck-tastic record label. AWESOME! And for this price, you can't go wrong!
A Nice Collection Of Classics + Brilliant DVD!.......2004-05-06
Thumbs up to Capitol for putting this nice collection together. The 'Best Shots' is a nice introduction to Pat's music before 1989. Although the liner notes don't mention the album being remastered, the audio sounds much better than on some previous releases, including certain selections from the
'Anthology' released in 1999. So I'm assuming it has been remastered again. But perhaps that's just my ears! It's nice having this 'Best Shots' disc for the brilliant live version of "Suffer The Little Children/Hell Is For Children."
Now on to the DVD. Capitol did a good job putting this together. While the picture quality isn't the best from the earlier videos, this is to be expected since the material is rather old. So I have no complaints here. The DVD has been remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby 2.0 Stereo. I was blown away while watching the "We Belong" video with the audio on my 330-watt stereo system. The sound quality is amazing, much better than on the CD itself, which I found surprising. I never knew the song had so much bass. The audio has been very well restored here.
As for the videos, it's nice being able to see a lot of these older videos from the 1980's, along with the videos from the 1990's - most of which I've never seen before, considering I was born in 1981! Some of the earlier videos are extremely cheesy, which is expected of most early 80's videos. Pat and her husband, Neil, definitely make note of this, making the "video/audio commentary" option a plus! We get to hear their thoughts about each video! I found myself laughing several times.
Pat and Neil seem to be very proud of the "Somebody's Baby" video, and I can see why. It's a very underrated video and one of my favorites. The same goes for "Strawberry Wine (Life Is Sweet)" which they give praise to as well! It's nice to have these videos on DVD, since they got such little airplay at the time of release.
A nice bonus are the live cuts of "Hell Is For Children" and "Heartbreaker" from 2001!
Seeing this DVD makes me want to run out and buy Pat's entire catalog. I think I'll work on doing that!
Now it's time for Capitol to remaster and re-issue all her albums with bonus tracks! I've never heard the extended remixes of some of the earlier recordings like "We Belong" and "Invincible" - which are listed in the liner notes of the 'Anthology.' Time for Capitol to reissue these!!!
Cd & DVD of Pat's greatest hits........2003-12-29
I recieved this cd as a Christmas gift and had the original cd when it was first put out in 1989 and since I have been a fan since 1980 when I first heard "Heartbreaker" and bought In The Heat Of The Night and everything up to her newest Go cd - I was very happy to see that there was a DVD attached to this collection. It also made me mad at Capitol in that in 2002 Blondie released a new Greatest Hits cd and DVD and the dvd isn't as good as this collection. You get 25 classic videos with commentary both just audio and also visually with Neil & Pat making fun of themselves ,bandmembers, costumes and hairstyles for added fun. The videos are somewhat dated in look but not in sound or style. There is also 4 live tracks- "Heartbreaker" and "I Need A Lover" from 1980 that showcase a somewhat rawer and tougher looking Pat that really was a highlight for me. The 2 other videos are newer performances of "Hell Is For Children" and "Heartbreaker" from 2001. So if you are a new fan or an older one the cd if you don't have it is great but it is the DVD that really makes this collection special. Pat still rocks!
The Best Of Both Worlds.......2003-10-09
This is an excellent collection for any fan. I have been a Benatar fan for 20+ years and I love this set. Originally I was going to skip the "Best Shots" CD, because I all ready purchased the "Synchronistic Wanderings [BOX SET]". But then I was looking for the DVD and I ran across this. The CD contains 15 of Pat's incredible songs, such as, "Hell Is For Children" (which is not on the original release of "Best Shots"), "One Love", "Painted Desert", "We Belong" and others. The DVD is the "Choice Cuts" DVD. With the 25 videos, 4 extra concert videos, and both the audio and video option commentary form Pat and Neil. This is a must have for fans who do not have the "Best Shot" album yet or for the new Benatar fans coming in off of her new album "Go" which also ROCKS!!!!! So for the price of this set you really are getting the best of both worlds.
