Bootleg Series 1-3
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Bob Dylan has always been incredibly prolific, only releasing a fraction of what he records. Such a policy has made him a prime target for bootleggers over the years, finally prompting this sanctioned 1991 triple-disc dive into the Dylan vaults. It consists of rare tracks, unreleased outtakes, early versions of classics ("Times They Are a-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," "I Shall Be Released"), and alternate versions that sometimes cut the originals ("Idiot Wind"). A measure of Dylan's depth is his list of discarded songs ("She's Your Lover Now," "Blind Willie McTell," "Series of Dreams") that would be the crown jewels of most catalogs. These 58 tracks serve as a shadow history of one of our most important artists. --Ben Edmonds --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Beyond awesome!.......2007-05-26
How far beyond awesome? If there's a Heaven and a Hell, if you haven't heard this at your end, you ain't goin' to Heaven.
Buy it. And I dare you to try to remove it from your CD player after hearing it the first time. But listen to it sitting down, or it'll knock you down.
Add 5 stars to the stingy 5 stars.
Need help with sound quality!.......2007-04-03
Can somebody out there help me with this collection? A few years ago Columbia was remastering the Bob Dylan catalog, and that is when I purchased the 3CD set of his called BIOGRAPH, because on the back of the box it said, Digitally Mastering at Sterling Sound, N.Y.C., with SBM, super bit mastering sound, so I was glad that I waited to purchase it till the remastered version became available, and I`ve been holding off from purchasing this collection till this collection has been remastered as well, in the SBM way that Biograph has. Or prehaps it has been by now, can somebody tell me if Columbia has remastered this collection yet?
Dylan Review.......2007-03-11
I absolutely love this bootleg set. It is the best music purchase I've made in several months; I can say this after having it firmly rooted in my CD player since I received it in the mail. I'm not a "reviewer of music," but watch out for Dylan's version of Idiot Wind in the set. It'll break your heart and leave you wanting more. A MUST have for any Dylan lover!
Hear Dylan again -- for the first time!.......2007-02-24
I've been a huge Dylan fan since I found "Bringing It All Back Home" nestled amongst my mother's Sonny & Cher albums at the age of 17. I'm no completist, but I do have most of Dylan's catalog, including almost everything he released during the 1960's... or so I thought!
The Bootleg Series 1-3 is exhaustive without ever feeling exhausting - the three discs span three decades of Dylan's career, and it just FLIES by you like snapshots in an album, giving you a great sonic evolution of the greatest singing poet the world has ever known. The discs demand immediate re-listens (no really!), and many tracks will beg the question "why the heck didn't THIS ever find it's way onto an album?!?"
For the uninitiated (are there any left?), this collection is a great introduction to Dylan's first 30 years; but to those of us who grew up listening to the man, it serves as a time machine, transporting you back to that emotional rush when you first heard the nasal whine and amazing lyrics of Robert Zimmerman. For some, that's worth it's weight in gold.

Love the Cd has songs I had never heard Bob sing, and everything was just fine.

The Best!!!.......2007-03-09
I got it for my boyfriend's birthday along with a few other Dylan cds...I think he's morphing into another version of Dylan. He absolutely loved this series though. I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Mr. Bob Dylan!!
A Great Gift.......2007-01-09
This was sent as a gift.... a perfect gift for any Die Hard Dylan fan....It came greatly appreciated and I enjoyed listening to it myself when visiting!!! Should have purchased two sets!!!
Got the essentials? Here's where you go for more.......2005-01-12
Hardcore Dylan-philes probably own this already, but more casual fans will find a lot to like here as well, although this three-disc set may be a bit too much for those who just want Dylan's biggest hits and best-known songs.
But if you already have the Bob Dylan "essentials" (like the wonderful boxset "Biograph", which is bolstered by several rarities), this is where you go when you want more.
These the first three CDs in the renowned "Bootleg Series" contain 58 outtakes, live performances, alternates and rarities recorded between 1961 and 1991. And these aren't rejects; on the contrary, this box contains some of Dylan's most interesting material. Disc one is devoted to acoustic songs dating from 1961-1963, and that one is probably the least interesting to casual or "mid-level" fans, but Dylan-philes will delight in "Walls Of Red Wing", the spirited "Walkin' Down The Line", and these fine versions of "Only A Hobo", "Let Me Die In My Footsteps", and "The Times They Are A-Changin'".
Disc two is the most diverse; it goes electric about a third of the way through with a wonderful band-backed "If You Gotta Go, Go Now", and it also includes an acoustic solo performance of "Subterranean Homesick Blues", and the original up-tempo "It Takes A Lot To Laugh".
"I'll Keep It With Mine" (which can be found as a solo performance on the "Biograph" box set) is here in a tentative band-backed rendition, followed by a driving rock n' roll-version of "She's Your Lover Now" and a tremendous, slow "I Shall Be Released", sung by Dylan with harmony vocals by the Band's Richard Manuel.
You'll also find the original low-key recording of "Idiot Wind", an alternate "Tangled Up In Blue", a band-backed and much slower than usual "If Not For You", and a genuine country waltz, "Wallflower".
Disc three opens with a beautiful alternate take of "If You See Her, Say Hello", another one from the original "Blood On The Tracks" sessions which were never issued. "Catfish" and the slow, swinging "Golden Loom" are outtakes from the "Desire" sessions, and this gentle demo of "Every Grain Of Sand" is at least as beautiful as the one issued on "Shot Of Love", just Dylan at the piano, an acoustic guitar, and Jennifer Warnes supplying a discreet backing vocal. Oh, and there's a dog, too, barking a few times about 2½ minutes into the song.
There are a few rather forgettable, sometimes over-produced songs on disc three, but those are outnumbered by the good ones. The memorable dark ballad "Angelina" is another highlight, as is "Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart" (which features Mark Knopfler and Mick Taylor on guitars), and the slow blues ballad "Blind Willie McTell".
If you truly want more than just the hits, this is where to look. "The Bootleg Series" is a great addition to the Bob Dylan catalogue, one which truly underlines the breadth and depth of his talent.
4 1/2 stars. A fine collection, exquisitely packaged and superbly annotated.
