Augmenting 1972's Greatest Hits with additional tracks, Best of... now stands as the preeminent one-disc introduction to the music of Simon & Garfunkel. Containing everything Greatest Hits offered except for the live version of "59th Street Bridge Song" (the original studio hit resurfaces here) and the incandescent "Kathy's Song," the updated retrospective boasts 20 tracks, in contrast to its predecessor's 14 selections. Added to the mix are the likes of "Hazy Shade of Winter," "The Only Living Boy in New York," "Song for the Asking," and "My Little Town," a one-off the twosome did five years after they ended their phenomenally successful partnership. Remastered from the original source tapes, Best of... also boasts far superior sound to the earlier hits collection. --Steven Stolder

Almost any way you look at it, the Carly Simon of the '70s was pretty cool. Her acerbic wit and nasally expressive voice had people comparing her to Carole King, but there was also a weary androgyny to her that wouldn't be seen again until the arrival of Chrissy Hynde. Her songs rocked without quite being rock songs, and were folk-evocative without falling into the singer-songwriter bins. She scored multiple singles hits yet pulled off albums with the best of her contemporaries. This is an early collection, so it misses "Nobody Does It Better" and other later hits. Regardless, nearly all the songs here are worth having. Flavorful and nourishing--and a good package, besides. --Gavin McNett
Album Description
Import pressing features 'Why' as an additional bonus track over the US version. The first and still the best of the many Carly Simon compilations available, 1975's THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON is an all-meat, no-filler collection of most of the folk-pop singer/songwriter's best and biggest songs. Looking over the track listing, one is reminded of just how many classic songs Simon was responsible for in the early '70s. "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be", "The Right Thing to Do", "Haven't Got Time For the Pain", "Anticipation", and of course "You're So Vain" still sound remarkably solid. This is particularly impressive considering the amount of radio time they've all gotten in the intervening decades. Simon's husky voice and smart, piano-based arrangements don't sound nearly as dated as those of many of her contemporaries, and while THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON may qualify as a guilty pleasure in some minds, it's a pleasure nonetheless. 11 tracks. Warner.

The Best of the Best...............2007-07-05
This wonderful album came out a number of years ago as a compilation of "Greatest Hits" from Carly's first five recordings. It is every bit of that...prime Carly, at her VERY best. The two BIG HITS are here, of course [if you don't know what I'm talking about...Sad...Very Sad], along with some other great material. AND, an album cover that's gorgeous, without being controversial.
Of course, we know that this isn't the end of the story...the past 30 years have seen a lot of fabulous recordings by Carly [see "Reflections"], but here is where our love affair started. We were all younger then, and sometimes it's nice to think back...
Some of you are like me, and have ALL of Carly's recordings. I do, and still I listen to this, even as I also listen to the full albums from which these selections were taken. But, for the others, you may well want to start right here. You'll see what we, the initiated, have known for 35 years. And you'll be happy you did. Promise.
Carly gets you dancing in a new attitude!!!.......2007-01-11
Carly Simon remains one of the greatest singers of the 20th century and she continues her work even today. Her voice is strong, rich and full of energy; and the musical arrangements for her songs are brilliant. This album contains many of Carly's earliest runaway hits and these songs remain as fresh as ever. This CD proves it; and it brings back fond memories for those of us who danced through the `70s, too.
The album opens with "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be." This song deals with female depression as a result of antiquated expectations for a woman to settle down, marry young and have children. Carly also plays piano on this track as does Paul Griffin. The melody highlights the woman's disappointment about the direction she feels she "should" take in life.
The CD switches gears rather quickly; the next song is the much happier "The Right Thing To Do." Here Carly's character is passionately in love with her man as she celebrates each moment they spend together. "Mockingbird" is another song with a strong beat and musical arrangement. James Taylor sings with Carly and this is a real treat! Some reviewers write that they did not expect "Mockingbird" to be such a success for Carly Simon; and I agree with those reviewers. However, Carly could do anything at this time in her career and the song boasts a great musical arrangement with Dr. John on piano and organ. The vocals are very strong. Excellent!
In my opinion, "Haven't Got Time For The Pain" remains one of the most triumphant songs ever recorded. Carly sings to celebrate a new, true love that is her redemption from a life of pain and suffering. This touching song is still one of Carly's very best.
Two gigantic hits on this album deserve special merit and attention: "You're So Vain" and "Anticipation." The first song, "You're So Vain," launches a sarcastic, scathing and belittling attack on a former lover of Carly's who hurt her at a time when she was in love and much less aware of how people can be cruel. Carly uses this song as both an outlet for her personal frustrations and as a ballad to describe the type of love relationship in which someone is fooled by the other's insincerity. Mick Jagger does background vocals on "You're So Vain" although the liner notes fail to give him credit for this. The second song, "Anticipation," suffered a little bit because part of the main chorus was used in, of all things, a ketchup commercial on television. Fortunately time has passed and "Anticipation" is once again a great song instead of an advertising jingle. "Anticipation" also boasts some very pensive, philosophical lyrics about what the future has in store for Carly's affair with a man. There is a particularly insightful comment at the very ending of "Anticipation." Carly sings that she will just enjoy the moment with her man without worrying what the future will bring "'cause these are the good old days." Carly was right. The 1970s ARE "the good old days" for us in the year 2007. Excellent insight, Carly!
The CD ends with the upbeat track entitled "Attitude Dancing." A song that encourages freedom of expression is the perfect way to end this album. Carole King herself helps out on background vocals!
After all is said and done, this CD of Carly Simon's earliest greatest hits contains nothing less than a five star collection of well written songs that are both strong and beautifully arranged. Each song can stand on its own as both a song and as a little story. The quality of the sound is excellent and the liner notes offer the lyrics and credits.
Carly Simon will always be a special gift to us. Her ability to combine words and music produces beautiful and touching songs. Carly performs her songs with so much sensitivity you will be stunned as you listen to this CD. I highly recommend this CD for people who want to become more familiar with Carly Simon's earlier work as well as fans of `70s rock and pop music.
Great early "best of" compilation for one of the best female singers in music entertainment!!!.......2006-05-08
This CD, "The Best of Carly Simon" is one of the finest albums ever released by none other than the famous Carly Simon. All ten of these songs are true classics and her most well known titles ever to come out. This came out in 1975 (still kind of early in her career), and was her sixth album released by Elektra Records. Since this title came out in '75, it does not contain "Nobody Does it Better" or any of her later hits (which appear on later compilation titles). This would also be a "mixed bag" album, containing songs of different sounds. The first track, "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be" is a nice and quiet song with a soft start and gets a little loud three times. Next comes "The Right Thing to Do", with a nice mellow sound. The third song title, "Mockingbird" is a great one, as well, with James Taylor sharing the microphone with Carly. The fourth track, "Legend in Your Own Time", is soft and mellow, with the guitar, Carly's vocals, and some bongo drums combined together for a nice quiet sound. The fifth track, "Haven't Got Time For the Pain" is great as well with Carly's voice coming in with the piano. This is a nice mellow song with a soft rock sound to it. Then, the sixth song, "You're So Vain", which I assume is one of Carly's best known songs and a signature tune for her, has a nice "middle-of-the-road" sound. This one starts out with a soft guitar sound and she whispers "son of a gun" and starts singing the lyric within the next few seconds. I have noticed that Mick Jagger is one of the (special guest) background vocalists on this one song. I have also learned that there is a mystery about who the song is about. Some people think it is Mick Jagger, others think it is Warren Beatty, or it may be about another prominent celebrity. But, whoever Carly sang about in this song, only she knows. If she doesn't want to reveal who the song is about, then that's her business as well as her decision. Sometimes something is better off being a mystery. Back to the song listing, the seventh track, "(We Have) No Secrets", is another nice mellow track. The eighth track, "Night Owl" is another nice sounding one, with almost a hard rock like sound to it. The sax solo in this song is wonderful and blends in well to the rest of the instrumentation. Paul and Linda McCartney made a "special guest" appearance, providing some of the background vocals on this title. The ninth song, "Anticipation", is smooth and mellow, and is another one of Carly's signature songs. Last comes the tenth and final track to close the album, "Attitude Dancing". This also is a great one, and has almost a disco like sound to it. I have this album on all three formats: LP, CD, and tape and I would think of this album of hers as one of my favorites. This is the first album of hers that I listened to. The CD that I have of this album is not a remastered one. I think the sound quality is excellent and clear, even though the back insert says that "there may be some limitations from the source tape". I didn't detect any limitations in the audio on the CD, but it's nice of the manufacturers to point it out to consumers before buying, just so that they know what they might get. But, even though CDs are the best format of music to buy, there is so much that CD manufacturers can do to make the audio quality as sharp and clear as possible. If such a music title on CD has some slight audio flaws from the original master tape, they do not and should not interfere with the playability of the music (some flaws may not even be noticed in the music). Carly Simon is also one of my favorite singers ever with such a wonderful voice. This album contains her most well known songs and not a single one is a "filler" (A "filler" is a type of song that is not a well known one; such a song is used to make an album full.) Rest assured, there are no fillers in this title. Great title to start out with if you're just discovering Carly's work. No Carly Simon music library would be complete without this album!! Get it and enjoy THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON.
Love Carly.......2005-08-29
All of my favorite songs are included. A great CD to sing-a-long to. One of my favoites.
Well, one must start SOMEWHERE!.......2005-04-10
Pop music of the 70's was so diverse that it produced a bevy of ORIGINAL artists. Simon was one of these: a prolific songwriter and a heckuva vocalist. Three of the seminal songs of the decade ("That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," "You're So Vain," and "Anticipation), along with her duet with then-husband James Taylor (a remake of "Mockingbird") and the wondrous "Haven't Got Time for the Pain," are representative of a time when radio, and the singers it produced, ruled.
'Talk about your ATTITUDE DANCING...the decade had it.
For those that want to know about the ME DECADE, "The Best of Carly Simon" is a good place to begin.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Terrific and a real blast!!!! Oh & Simon said I could review them!!!.......2006-04-20
Along with The Ohio Express came The 1910 Fruitgum Company and gee am I glad they did.Another Bubble Gum group with a vast list of very popular and catchy songs. The cd is very inexpensive and well worth the money. The songs are all the originals but remastered.Great sound quality and the cd consists of 16 songs which are.....1) Simon Say 2)May I take a Giant Step 3)Please me, Tease me 4)Sweet Lovin' 5) Play Our Sog Mr.Music Man 6)1,2,3 Red Light 7)Candy 8)Liza 9) Indian Giver 10) Dee-Licious 11) 1910 Cotton Cany Castle 12)Bubble Gum World 13) Special Delivery 14) Goody Goody Gumdrops 15) The Train 16) Reflections from the Looking Glass.A very catchy and upbeat compilation of songs that make you smile and the memories can be over powering if you listened to 1910 FGC growing up as I did.I splendid collection of pop and fun songs with that Bubble Gum sound.Try it you'll like it.
Fond Childhood Memories.......2004-12-30
when i was thirteen i wore out 3 copies of Indian Giver. i bought the others in the 3 for a dollar bin. these included Simon Says, 1-2-3 Redlight, Goody Goody Gumdrops, Special Delivery, and May I Take A Giant Step. the sound is the best ever and album tracks like The 1910 Cotton Candy Castle, and b-side Reflections Of The Looking Glass are welcome additions. unfortunatly, i wish they included the single versions of Simon Says, Goody Goody Gumdrops and Special Delivery. they are all vastly different. Simon Says is available through the verese bubblegum series. still, you can't go wrong with this one.
Sixties bubblegum at it's best.......2002-09-15
Bubblegum pop was never meant to be anything more than lightweight, fun music. Despite the critics, people bought the music because the songs were very catchy and well performed.
Perhaps the best of the bubblegum groups was the 1910 fruitgum co, who's biggest hit was Simon says - it was #4 in America and #2 in Britain. I remember being a little boy in the fifties playing the game Simon says, and I remember being a teenager hearing the song Simon says played at teenage parties and everybody dancing to it.
There were several other hits in America, but not in Britain where they remain a one-hit wonder. All their American hits are here, the two biggest apart from Simon says being 1 2 3 red light and Indian giver, both of which peaked at #5. Two others (Goody goody gumdrops and Special delivery) just made the top forty, and they had two other minor hits, these being May I take a giant step into your heart and The train. The rest of this collection is made up of the best album tracks and B-sides.
Music like this is not meant to be taken seriously, but it's very catchy and great fun.
Essential bubblegum classics.......2001-12-11
Admit it - you dug the 1910 Fruitgum Company in the fifth grade and you want to hear those great, naughty-but-silly double-entendre bubblegum hits again. Delight, then, in this beautifully-produced anthology. Excellent remastering, excellent liner notes, all the tracks you remember and then some. I'm not saying this is "Abbey Road" or something, but it's certainly essential in its own way, and if your friends and family make derogatory comments, tell them how the Talking Heads used to faithfully cover "1-2-3 Red Light" in concert! Recommended also is the Ohio Express collection and, to a lesser extent, the Lemon Pipers.
Great Bubblegum lasts forever!.......2001-08-10
Yes,yes, yes! The 1910 F.C. had some of the catchiest, fun pop music EVER!Sure,it's debatable who played/sang on what, but who cares? The great songs are what matters and this is a top-notch collection of "their" best stuff!Rock on,Bob PS:INDIAN GIVER is one of the best songs of all time!

Customer Reviews:
Probably the finest way to own a Collection of the Duo's work.....(Without buying a Boxset!!!).......2006-07-18
There are umpteen Simon and Garfunkel compilations out there, all vying for your money. And for those of you that are a little shy of forking out for a boxset, there's 2003's `The Essential Simon and Garfunkel' being amongst the strongest efforts. So what makes this as this effort stand out from the crowd???....well, this is one of those compilations that occupies a slightly weird middle ground, by being suitable for those that probably want to buy just the one purchase of a Simon and Garfunkel compilation, that not only contains the hits, ("Mrs. Robinson," "The Sound of Silence", "The Boxer", "I am a Rock", "Bridge over troubled water", "Cecilia") but also goes a little further that all the biggest hits, and includes albums tracks, and lesser know tracks that stand up as admirably as the most popular work: ( "The only living boy in New York", "Fakin' It", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "A Hazy Shade of Winter", "My Little Town", Kathy's Song").
This (with the exception of picking up a boxset), is arguably the most comprehensive compilation of the duo's work. It tops the `Essential Simon and Garfunkels' 33 tracks, by having a impressive 40 tracks, spread over two disks. Obviously this wouldn't mean much if those extras tracks where merely forgettable, and might merely drag the standard of the compilation down, but thankfully this is a masterfully compiled selection of tracks, that will surprise those that, only know the hits, by making a superbly rounded summary of the Duo's career, encapsulating their early bittersweet and sentimental folk numbers with the mainstream friendly amiable and reflective pop songs, that brought them a much larger audience. And it's here that this compilation really comes into its own, because unless you have the majority of the Duo's work, there's likely to be a fair bit of material that you either (A) Haven't heard in Years, or (B) Is completely new to you, and startles at its brilliance.
Several things, that I feel are important to note, is that the musical fidelity of the recordings is brilliant....sure, it's not been mastered in a relatively cutting edge music format (SACD, etc..), but few will complain with the mastering that has been done here, with every note and word, perfectly sequenced and mixed, it's gratifying to hear that the label actually put some effort into the mastering process for this release. Which leads me onto the next point, which is more significant....the majority of the tracks here, almost sound like brilliantly edited `Live' versions of the tracks. They're probably not...but there certainly a more muscular sound and resonance to the tracks, that I simply don't remember the regular studio albums having (I put on a couple of tracks from the "Bridge over Troubled water" studio album, and it seemed far weaker in comparison). Some tracks in particular, sound noticeably fuller and more prominent than usual. Maybe it's just me...but I simply wouldn't want to trade in this compilation for any of the other dozen or more Simon and Garfunkel compilations knocking around out there, for fear of getting (by comparison) muddy and muffled versions of these songs.
But, Irrespective of that, it has to be said, that this really is the most comprehensive and impressively compiled compilation of the Duo's work. It's goes beyond just given the causal listener the hits, and has enough material to satisfy those that might already own a couple of the Duo's studio albums, and yet remains accessible enough for those that want to dig into the Duo discography a little deeper, without having to shell out bucks for a boxset, and the sound is brilliantly mastered. It's entirely possible, that even if you're a big fan of the Duo's work, you can pretty much get all you need from just owning this truly superlative effort.
40 Gems.......2006-03-29
This excellent compilation includes all of this famous duo's best-loved classics. They had a flair for combining poetic lyrics with unforgettable melodies and ruled the charts for most of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The Bridge Over Troubled Water album - a greatest hits collection in itself - stayed on both the USA and UK charts for years. Sound Of Silence articulated a particular late 60s urban youth feel in its images of subway walls and graffiti, while Homeward Bound is filled with loneliness and redemption.
Mrs Robinson appeared on a movie soundtrack and El Condor Pasa with its lovely Amerindian flutes remains quite unique. All these songs are classics, but my favourites include The Boxer, America, I Am A Rock and the lively, upbeat Cecilia. You can't go wrong with this album where every track is worth its weight in gold.
Exceptional compilation, superbly remastered.......2002-12-09
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were better together than apart, because they had such different talents. Paul was a brilliant songwriter - certainly one of the best of his generation - and a good singer without being anything special. Art was not a songwriter, but he had a superb voice which brought out the best in Paul's songs.
So, here we have 40 of their finest recordings, digitally remastered to sound better than ever, with most of the songs written by Paul and Art doing most of the singing. Of course, all the obvious tracks are included - Bridge over troubled water, Mrs Robinson, Homeward bound, Sound of silence, The boxer, Cecilia, Feeling groovy, I am a rock, America and El condor pasa (If I could) - but this collection contains a further 30 tracks which are all of a very high quality.
Among them are Hazy shade of winter (a song revived brilliantly by the Bangles in the eighties), the upbeat but rueful Keep the customer satisfied, Baby driver - another upbeat song, a live cover version of Bye bye love, not forgetting the superb Scarborough fair/Canticle.
After the split, Paul and Art each had some success as solo singers, but despite some great individual moments, they never achieved the level of consistency separately that they achieved together - and this is the best collection you'll ever find, unless you want to go for the boxed set from which these tracks were selected.
Best Sounding Simon and Garfunkel Ever.......2002-02-12
I have bought many Simon and Garfunkel CD's over the years but this is the best sounding ever. A great helping of all the singles plus a generous helping of LP tracks this is the compilation to get. Released as a double in Canada as well.
Great music from the dynamic duo.......2001-11-23
The lyrical genius of Paul Simon and the melodic tones of Art Garfunkel are what makes Simon and Garfunkel, and this compilation album of their greatest hits is a fantastic addition to the folk-lovers music collection. Stand out songs include "Sound Of Silence", "Scarborough Fair", "We've Got A Groovy Thing Going", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", and of course, "Mrs Robinson".

Album Description
This is the FIRST ALL NEW RECORDING OF JOHN RUTTER'S MUSIC IN TEN YEARS! "Mass of the Children was written in late 2002 and early 2003. The occasion of its first performance in February 2003 was a concert in New York's Carnegie Hall involving children's choir, adult choir, soprano and baritone soloists, and orchestra. I had always wanted to write a work combining children's choir with adult performers, not only because I find the sound of children's voices irresistible but also because I wanted to repay a debt. As a boy soprano in my school choir I had been thrilled whenever our choir took part in adult works with children's choir parts, such as the Mahler Third Symphony and the Britten War Requiem, and years later I remembered this experience and wanted to write something that would give children a similar opportunity to perform alongside adult professionals". From the notes - John Rutter
Customer Reviews:
Mass of the Children.......2006-03-24
My daughter is performing this work with her high school chorale. She is the main listener, and is totally enamored with this particular recording.
A Brilliant Masterpiece.......2005-12-24
After being able to perform this piece myself, I know that is is just amazing! I reccomend it to anyobdy who likes spiritual, uplifting music.
Nice work, Mr. Rutter!
Britten-lite :(.......2005-03-30
I contemplated on this 3-star rating for a bit, especially after reading all the 4- to 5-star ratings preceding this. John Rutter is a terrific and charismatic choral conductor and writer. His editing on Fauré's Requiem really galvanized the popularity of that work, not to mention his own very heart-felt Requiem setting as well. Speaking of Requiem settings, my bone to pick about the "Mass of the Children" work is such that it emulates (albeit in a heart-felt and sincere fashion) other large-scale works that involve orchestral, treble and mixed choruses, very specifically Benjamin Britten's unforgettable War Requiem. I couldn't help but feel a bit slighted by the last few pages of "Mass of the Children" and its much diluted rendition of the War Requiem's counterpart conclusion. I think those famliar w/ the Britten will know what I mean. It's hard not to draw a comparison because the similarities are striking yet determinedly contrived.
In any case, I do understand that the participants and "target audience" are perhaps less lofty than that of the Britten. According to the score inscription, this was "written at the inviation of Peter Tiboris and MidAmerica Productions."
There are other anthems on this CD that offer a nice addition. I think the Clare Benediction is a stand-out as a great latter-Rutter anthem, with a characteristically satisfying, fluent and "inevitable" cadences towards the end.
Outstanding!.......2004-12-27
As an avid choral enthusiast, and having performed The Mass of the Children, I can say that this is one of Rutter's finest works. Without a doubt, Rutter truly allows his soul to shine through in this masterpiece. The children's choir is fabulous, and the music gives me chill bumps whenever I hear it. I highly recommend this album!
Beautiful!.......2004-09-11
I sing with my school choir, and was blessed to be able to perform the Mass of the Children with the school. It is a beautiful mass-- the lightness of the childrens voices with the power of the adult choirs make a moving and powerful mass. The orchestra is stunning, just enough to add beauty to the piece. Rutter's Mass of the Children is a must-have for any person who enjoys this type of music.

sweet tone, bad recording.......2000-02-26
NAXOS is good to discover new/younge artists, but it should also apply good techniques in the recording. If Ilya is playing in front of us, we will be easily moved, but the bad recording simply destroyed his performance
Excellent songs- bad player.......1999-09-04
Two phrases- Paganini good, Ilya Kaler very, very bad. Worst violinist ever.
Great "tunes".......1999-08-21
I agree with the above review. This is incredibly good music. The sonatas with violin and guitar are beautiful, and the caprices are certainly astounding. Everyone knows Paganini was an unmatched violinist, but he was also a great composer. This disc is a steal.
great music.......1999-03-19
This is some of the sweetest music of all times. Fortunatelly for me, but sadly for the performers it's also very cheap.
