The Wall is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what ranks as Pink Floyd's most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right. "Hey You," "Mother," and especially "Comfortably Numb" are subtle, incredible pieces of music. Though complex, they move at a relaxed pace, allowing the listener to absorb them slowly; this kind of pacing was something Pink Floyd excelled at. Also worth noting is the "Another Brick in the Wall/The Happiest Days of Our Lives" medley, which has become a staple of rock radio. --Genevieve Williams

What is there that I could possibly write that hasn't been written before about perhaps one of the greatest concept albums ever? (Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" being the other....yes, Genesis actually existed before Phil Collins took over vocals when the genius behind the band, Peter Gabriel, departed...but I digress) The only bon mot I could add is the fact that after all these years, "The Wall" still succeeds in captivating listeners. I introduced my 6 year old daughter to the cd first, then the movie...she is now a huge fan of not only "The Wall" but earlier Floyd stuff as well.

Waters dominated effort hurtling toward a dark and dreary place.......2007-07-12

My first exposure to the Floyd was in '73 (DSOTM)- Problem is, DSOTM set the bar so high that every subsequent Waters effort work became narrower in scope...so with The Wall we are no longer conteplating the life's looming questions but rather seeing the world from the inside out of an individual, isolated, bitter, musician. It doesn't leave much room for personal interpretation.

That being said, there are enjoyable musical moments on this work. As others have noted, The Wall, is colored to a much greater extent by the personality of Roger as his works became lyrically denser at the expense of the fine instrumental passages of the earlier works. There are also songs that you simply want to skip (thank goodness for CDs). Some songs, such as "Comfortably Numb", have personally become more meaningful due to circumstances occuring in my life (my dad was in a coma). So, I wouldn't dismiss the entire work as rubbish...just be prepared for a Pink Floyd on steriods/cocaine (seems the Lysergic had declined in popularity).

Great Album.......2007-07-11

That first review pretty much sums up the whole "The Wall" album. there's not much I can add except just this is a slow paced but enjoyable musical experince. This is well worth getting and is actually my first Pink Floyd CD, and is a good introduction to them. I highly recommend it to people who like classic rock as the music is very soft played, so no head thrashing.

This is a great listening experience. Many of the songs on this classic two CD set are amongst the best Pink Floyd has released. Some of them are just okay; however, the majority make for a five star experience. I suggest making yourself comfortably numb and enjoying one of the more popular rock experiences of all time.

All has been said after more than a thousand review. This is a must have double cd, a great conceptual double album. All kind of musical style, rock (In the Flesh, Young Lust, Run like hell), melodic ballads (Mother, Goodbye blue sky), radio hit (Another brick part II), prog classic (Confortably Numb), classic (The Trial)
As Amazon, I agree, this is an essential cd. A must have.

Pleasant enough.......2007-07-05

There is a reason that one of these selections is the catchy tune on one of the caveman commercials. It's "elevator" music or more exactly airport music, that innocuous background music that many people seem to hate. Generally it's a very pleasant CD of listenable background music. This isn't a masterpiece of edgy electronica; it's fine for playing while you are doing something else and it doesn't demand your whole attention. It was especially fun to hear the entire song from the Geico commercial, which is the reason I, and I suspect many others, bought this.

When I heard the song used on the Geico commercial (the airport scene), the song Remind Me was used. I diligently looked for this song and found it. I was very pleased that the entire album is was good. This was a great purchase for me, not only did I get the song I liked but the rest of the Album was great as well. I highly recommend this CD.

The Caveman Song.......2007-05-19

I couldn't get the song out of my head from the Gieco commercial. I actually thought the song was made up for the commerical, just a few lines. What a nice surprise when I found this album. I rarely listen to music anymore, this I listen to endlessly. In the old days, this type of easy listening music was called "elevator music," (do they play music in elevators anymore?). Takes the edge off driving, being stuck in traffic. Kind of music you don't have to pay attention to, mellow, buts you a good mood. To me, yeah it is a "keeper," worth the money. The other songs are good, ok, I mean I don't pay attention to the lyrics, really don't know what they're saying, will have look them up one day, but it doesn't really matter. Chow

Royksoop Melody AM.......2007-05-18

Lets face it I bought this because of the Geico commercial. They play a snatch of the tune Remind Me when the Caveman walks past a picture of another Caveman and I liked it so much I called the compamy to find out who did it. After I got the CD I was so surprised to hear such neat music--it borders on mood music but wit attitude. The group is very different and has it together here. This is not for Rocker fans but will definately
satisfy the easy listener who wants to kick back and just be pampered. This one is worth the bucks.

I bought this because of the commercial - and although some reviews were only possitive about the one song, I found the rest of the songs to be enjoyable although they are quite different.

Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall redefined how much Michael might do.

Tracks like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and "Burn this Disco Out" not only consolidated his dance-floor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on uptempo material. Artistic role models like James Brown and Jackie Wilson echo through the mixes, but these were Jackson's leaps forward. Special Edition Problems in the Remastering (Treble Boost).......2007-06-26

Why am I giving this Michael Jackson masterpiece only two stars? I have a serious issue with the remastering -- it's way too bright on my high-end (and otherwise very flat with no tone controls) stereo system. Who the heck maintained the boosted treble? I'm sure this would sound great equalized on an AM radio station, but it's hurting my ears. The sound quality of the original album is remarkably crisp...stinging, in fact.

So, this is just a warning for those expecting the remastering to have corrected the riding-the-treble-gain problem. I recommend those without the usual treble/bass tone controls who still have their hearing avoid this particular release.

THIS IS A FUN CD, THAT IN IT'S TIME WAS AND IS SO MUCH FUN TO LISTEN TO. THIS WAS THE MICHAEL JACKSON THAT WAS TALENTED AND HAD SO MUCH TO OFFER. IT IS A GREAT CD.

Long after talk of Michael Jackson's nose, skin colour, Bubbles, etc. this is what he will be remembered for! It puts all todays RnB and Pop to shame. It's as raw, funky and fresh as it was in 1979! One of the greatest and creative albums Ive ever heard, the problem is people seem to skip it and listen to his more successful albums but trust me I have them all this is by far the best! The opening track sets the tone for the album and ITS OFF THE HOOK! I cant say anymore listen and you'll wonder why him and Quincy Jones dont get back together and make people feel Pop music again!!! (ps. Michael plays with milk bottles on the first track he just has born rythme!) GENIUS ALBUM

Don't get it twisted, Thriller is a better album than Off the Wall. But Off the Wall is his most passionate, consistent and effortless work. Mike came alive when he got the opportunity to do it for dolo. The whole album is a Pop and R & B standard. My favorites are Rock with you(The Shiznit), Off the Wall(The Shiznit), Cant Help It(Classic), Burn this disco out, Get on the Floor, Dont stop till you get enough(Untouchable), Working day and night, It's the falling in love, and Girlfriend. Musically and artistically no one comes close to Mike. Even Biggie said it, "Some nights I perform like Mike - anyone Tyson, Jordan, Jackson, Action". Hopefully, Mike and Quincy Jones will wise up and give the world one more classic.

Album Description

"Everything Is Illuminated" is the directorial debut of actor Liev Schrieber and an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's best-selling novel. A blend of high comedy and great tragedy, the film tells the story of a young American man, played by Elijah Wood (The Lord of The Rings trilogy), who journeys to the Ukraine to find the woman whom he believes saved his grandfather from the Nazis all those years ago.

The soundtrack features two new songs from high energy New York City based gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, including one track not on their current cd. (Note: Gogol Bordello's lead singer plays a role in "Everything Is Illuminated"). Also included are gypsy folk songs from Russia and the Ukraine by Leningrad, Arkadie Severmie, Csokolom and Tin Hat Trio. And finally, Paul Cantelon's ethnic score ties together this nicely cohesive soundtrack.

Marvelous.......2007-06-13

This is an amazing soundtrack that highlights the two prevalent emotions in the film: hilarity and tragedy. Paul Cantelon deftly mixes an Eastern European feel with pure, gorgeous soundtrack music. Along for the ride are songs by genuinely fun and original bands. I never get tired of it. Sometimes, indeed, there are tracks I can't listen to simply because they're too sad - but then I switch to the upbeat, funny tunes, which always manage to entertain.

1. Odessa Medley: 9/10 - Enjoyable, with fun instruments. It builds up into an intricate array of instruments and melodies, and really picks up at the end, tempting you to let it sweep you along into the movie's crazy world. A great overture to the movie.
2. Leningrad, Zvezda Rok-N-Rolla: 8/10 - Oh, the drama! Leningrad is a Russian band. All of their songs on this album are crazy and fun and fit the craziness of the movie to a T. The horns are wonderful.
3. Csokolom, Amari Szi Amari: 10/10 - Superbly catchy, with that quirky, old feel dominant in the film, this song is a laidback sort of fun. It's the only song on the album not in Ukrainian, Russian, or English: it's Hungarian. This doesn't matter, however, because it fits so perfectly with the feel of the movie.
4. Leningrad, Dikiy Muzhchina: 10/10 - I LOVE this song. It's one my favorites here. The title means "Wild Man" in Russian, and it is definitely a very wild and (dare I say it again?) fun song. The lyrics really are just plain fun to sing along to, even if you don't speak Russian. You can practically feel the energy. In fact, I just now started to sing to it again...
5. Prologue/Babushka: 9.5/10 - This is where a darker mood begins to edge in. It sinks into a waltz that is more bittersweet than tragic, and then slows down to make way for a sweeping, haunting tune. Lovely.
6. Little Jonathan/The Wall: 9/10 - Playful, but once more in a bittersweet sort of way. After awhile it switches gears, swooshing up with energy, befores changing back to that haunting feeling of "Babushka" that I like to think of as simply The Past.
7. Gogol Bordello, Bublitschki: 8/10 - Time for some fun again. This instrumental piece by an immensely talented band (actually, Eugene Hutz, who plays Alex, is the lead singer of Gogol Bordello) mixes an irresistible beat with a traditional Slavic sound.
8. The Con Artists, Peter Miser, Ya-takoy: 9/10 - This definitely brings one back to the silliness of Alex in the beginning of the film. With snippets of his unbelievably hilarious dialogue and an urban beat going in the background, you'll be sucked right in.
9. Leningrad, Malen'kiy Mal'chik: 9/10 - Great fun! Leningrad never fails to entertain with this lazy collection of horns and vocals.
10. Tin Hat Trio, Fear of the South: 8/10 - Here's a piece to relax to. It's lighthearted and fresh.
11.Paul Cantelon, River of Collections: 9/10 - With breathy strings, "River of Collections" urges you quietly but with instistence along the river of The Past.
12. Paul Cantelon, Tank Graveyard/Valse de Suzana/Dee-yed: 9.5/10 - Here is the tragedy I've been referring to. It's sad. Almost unbearably so. It sweeps you up in the conflict of the characters, teasing you with peaks at the truth before fading back into the darkness.
13. Paul Cantelon, Sunflowers: 10/10 - Ukrainian, I believe. Haunting, with strong vocals that cast a spell.
14. Paul Cantelon, War Is Love/eta-Ya: 9.5/10 - It begins with lazy simplicity, but toward the end bursts into a powerful and urgent message.
15. Paul Cantelon, Trachimbrod/Ressurection/Requiem: 10/10 - Simply beautiful. About halfway through, the urgency of the previous tracks finally builds up for the climax, whooshing over you bitterly, sadly, and with almost a sense of determination. Again, it's tragic. You don't hear the lightheartedness of previous tracks, but the slight nudging of a past that doesn't want to haunt: it just wants to resolve itself. To exist.
16. Paul Cantelon, Inside-Out: 10/10 - And it does resolve itself. Here is another bittersweet piece. But this time, it carries a touch of enlightenment (illumination?) with it.
17. Gogol Bordello, Start Wearing Purple: 10/10 - This was the absolutely most perfect song the movie could have ended with. It switches the film seamlessly back into that feel of silly hilarity, single-handedly managing to leave the audience uplifted - a sore necessity for such a partly bleak film!

Overall, one of my favorite soundtracks out there. Whether you've seen the (remarkable) movie or not, get this! It is gorgeous, beautiful, fantastic, powerful, uplifting, and itching to tell you something you've known all your life but just can't quite grasp. In short, a brilliant piece of work.

Elijah Wood was surprising in his portrayal of the main charecter, who is a bit of a "nebish" or dweeb, and a collector of multitudenous often unthinkable items. His search of his family's past which takes him to the Ukraine, and the people he meets are
funny, amusing and often very moving. It's got a shocking thread to it,
but not without humor. I also liked the surprise ending. The music was great!

This IS it !!!!! If you are an European (like myself), and want to know what America is all about, (both above and below the surface), you get it here - served with a blink in the eye, a smile, alot of fun, and some frustrations. It is all their - blended nicely together.
Wall of Voodoo is phenomenal in American music. Not many other US artists can create such an precise look and perspective on their homeland and the western culture in general. And always served with a surplus of humour !!
The song "Call of the West" is perhaps the finest rock/pop song ever crafted. Big words, but it is hard to beat.
Overall, the lyrics (actually more accurate: full-blown stories) are second to none and the music was perhaps 20 years ahead of its time - mixing rhytm-machines, keyboards, electric guitars in a great mix !
Get it. I will make your life a little richer (which is actually alot)
and a whole lot cooler !!

This is the album that got noticed because of the hit

single "Mexican Radio". So this was there best selling

album & the last with Stan Ridgeway as lead vocalist. I

wish they would have added bonus tracks to this already

excellent album (maybe the 12" dub mix of "Mexican

Radio" Ummm). A excellent record & a band that stood

apart from all others in the 1980's. I highly recommend

you to get this album. After that, buy the two previous

recordings by the band, "The Index Masters" & the highly

collectable rare & expensive "Dark Continent". What are

ya waiting for anyway! Get um! Search "Judemac Forever"

Good... but not buyable.......2006-05-10

I had the "45" if anyone even still knows what that is, a single of "Mexican Radio" back in the 80's and after hearing it on the radio the other day, I looked here and saw where you could listen to all the others songs if only for a moment. All I can is- WOW! How did this band crank out suck a kick @ss song compared to the rest of other music on the alblum?! I mean my god their bad. I suppose they grow on you if you forced yourself to listen to it enough times, and Im sure others will disagree harkening back to a better time, better music argument. Sorry, the rest of the track suckx. WOV must have just been another One-Hit-Wonder (despite 9 alblums??!!).

This album is as innovative as any ever produced. It is however the antithsis of pop music so pop fans beware. If you want something that is totally out of the box, but never gets old, this it! One of the best rock albums ever!

In retooling the Arthurian legend for the goth-beguiled video game age, mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer did away with details small (the lady in the lake, sword in the stone, etc.) and large (this Arthur is actually Eastern European, by way of Rome). Composer Hans Zimmer picks up that gauntlet, producing an orchestral score bristling with massed brass, chorus and percussion -- if little of the indigenous mysticism that made his work on Gladiator/ so rewarding. What there is of that precious commodity is frontloaded via the song "Tell Me Know (What You See)," his evocative opening collaboration with Clannad's Moya Brennan. From there, Zimmer emphasized this version's Eastern conceits with a half-dozen suites of cues that thunder in the Russian classical tradition -- and all the melodic range of "Jingle Bells." Zimmer--not to mention Poledouris--has done it better, but fans of outsized orchestral Gothic moodfests may yet take this one to heart. --Jerry McCulley

I'm a huge Hans Zimmer fan, his scores are rich and deep. This is not his best, but it's still a great listen.

Want to hear Gladiator II?.......2007-04-12

In the end, this is the only relevant question; do you want to hear a more melodramatic version of Gladiator? More melodramatic, you ask?
And you better believe it, Hans Zimmer actually managed to blow up his sound from Gladiator even more, and I really didn't think this was possible, mainly because I thought it would sound utterly pathetic and over the top. And make no mistake, Zimmer's King Arthur is just that.

I am reviewing this score in retrospect, and it is truly fascinating to do that. When you look at other composers and make a little journey to their past, you usually find more creativity. The further back you go, the more original and fresh music you find. With Hans Zimmer, it's the opposite. With each year you go back, his scores just get more dreary, and that's saying alot because his latest works also don't really qualify as schoolbook examples for colourful scoring.

From Gladiator to Pirates Of The Caribbean 2, Hans Zimmer has yet to come forth with a truly fresh and unique score. Zimmer never, ever, not in a million years, escapes his usual box. And King Arthur is no exception whatsoever. From the get go, 20 horns are amassed and play a overly simplistic motif somewhere between a and A, the strings mush together in midrange, melodramatic chords, and dwell in the shallow realm of overbearing dullness.
I don't understand how an artist - and the art of film composing is severely underrated - can be content with repeating the same thing over and over. If I were Hans Zimmer, I would be embarassed by now to even write one more note for that droning bass.
To top it all off, Zimmer incorporates an Enyaesque voice that is easy on the ears, but in the end signifies nothing, does nothing and does all that with an amazing lack of substance.

That is, amongst others, the major difference between a serious film composer and Hans Zimmer: a good and skillful film composer takes an average film like King Arthur and makes it sound like something worthwhile. Hans Zimmer on the other hand embraces mediocrity and underlines it to create an even more average film.

I recently purchased this particular soundtrack, and i would have to say it is awesome. Hans Zimmer is a master at what he does. The music suits the film and since I loved the film I had to get the soundtrack. I loved the song Tell Me Now by Moya Brennan, and Another Brick in Hadrians Wall is the best song im my opinion on the soundtrack. Overall I'm so glad I bought this soundtrack and I rate it up there with the likes of Gladiator, Pirates of the Carribean. Keep up the good work Hans

Hans' Best.......2007-03-12

Hans Zimmer is a film composer with dozens and dozens of scores under his belt. Many who do not collect or even listen to film scores know his name. However, much if his film music sounds very similar and lacks a complex edge that other compose like John Williams, James Horner, and James Newton Howard deliver.

That said, King Arthur is Hans' most intriguing score to date. Backdraft and Gladiator (overrated) were very good, but this score is a departure from Hans' usual motifs. The only bad part for me(not related to the music itself) is that there are only seven tracks and each are very long. I like shorter tracks so I can pinpoint the themes or variations I want to lsiten to, but this is extremely minor. The music is great, and I reccommend you go enjoy Hans' best music yet.

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25

I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

Underrated even as it is lavished with praise.......2007-06-20

I know my title makes no sense, but it's true. This album cannot be praised enough. It is a masterwork. It is a new era for the Crim, more new-wavey but still pretty proggish. These songs are excellently written, and are made more so by the players. Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew on the guitar create some of the most excellent shredding in the history of music, with the two's complicated lines interlocking and creating something fantastic. Then there's Tony Levin on bass/stick, playing seemingly simple but probably not so bass/stick lines. They, especially the stick lines, seem to act more as another melody than harmony. And then there is freakin' William Scott Bruford on the drumset. Why is this guy not as appreciated as god-danged Neil Peart? Peart is way too flashy and far too mechanical to be as praised as he is. I'm being a hypocrite here, because there is no way in heck I'm as good a drummer as Peart. But jeez, Bruford is so much better. The guy has such a unique style and keeps up with this very complex playing with absolute ease and finesse, but instead of playing fills the whole way through like a certain Canadian, he GROOVES and it is EXCELLENT.
Sorry to get off on a rant there. I love Rush, I even like Peart's playing generally. Let's move on.
Concerning the album, a song that is good, or even a song that is great would be a total dud on this album. That's how awesome it truly is. "Elephant Talk" is a great opener, with lyrics that are mainly synonyms for the word talk, with weird elephantesque guitar noises and a cool stick melody being what makes the song better than it already was.
"Frame by Frame"...wow. Fripp's incredibly fast run-up-the-fretboard-and-back-and-not-break-a-sweat guitar riff is simply the epitome of sweetness and the more melodic part of the song (e.g., the verses) is stunning and beautiful.
"Matte Kudasai" is a lovely ballad with a beautiful slide guitar sound that is a recurring theme and Belew's drifting, pleasant voice singing lyrics such as "She sleeps in a chair/in her sad/America". I'm not a fan of soft, ballad-type songs, but this is done quite well.
"Indiscipline" sounds totally unhinged, with Belew ranting about "it" and equally wild music popping up after each verse. Crazy fun.
"Thela Hun Ginjeet" is another fairly unhinged song, but it is not as wild as "Indiscipline", for sure. Rather, it grooves and comes back to a recurring, fairly nonsensical (at least, it seems) chorus when it is not recounting an absolutely bizarre and somewhat creepy narrative that seems to be about some sort of videotape.
"The Sheltering Sky" is a beautiful and interesting instrumental that is a little overlong. I dig it, though.
Now we come to the title track. "Discipline" is another instrumental, but is far more awesome than "The Sheltering Sky". In fact, it makes "TSS" look like a huge turd floating in gross brown water in a disgusting toilet with the lid up in a dingy gas station/truck stop. It has incredibly awesome, nearly orgasmic overlapping guitar parts that, along with the really cool bass-and-drums groove, creates a totally out-of-this-world whole. Even though it is fairly minimalistic and five minutes long, it doesn't last long enough.
The bonus track, the alternate take of "Matte Kudasai" is good, because you can't really ruin a song like that. But it is almost the same as the previous version. Kind of a waste.
In summary, 500000000000000000000000000000 stars. Perfect. What music should sound like.

This CD is the King of King Crimson!.......2007-06-08

This is such an awesome CD full of interesting sounds and rhythms! I had it years ago when it came out and had it stolen. Lately I kept thinking about it and decided to purchase the new remastered CD. It's just as good as ever! In fact I think I appreciate the work and the quality of the recording even more now.

Tony Levin's bass is phenomenal! Sometimes it's interesting just following his bass playing. Outstanding! Whether he's with Crimson or with Peter Gabriel he's fantastic. Definitely one of the best bass players I know of along with Chris Squire. And talk about guitar work. Fripp and Belew do some outstanding, very interesting work here. Kind of Al Di Meola on acid. Bill Bruford is excellent! I read a review where someone apparently doesn't think much of Bruford. I've seen him perform in a couple of different groups like Genesis and Yes and he's alway been able to flow with a progressive band well. He provides a great foundation for the music here.

Highly recommended if you are in to strange music and progressive rock styles. My favorite King Crimson CD. I don't know if this is classified as progressive rock but whatever it is, I like it a lot! One to crank up! Sometimes I take it out and play little games like looking at it and then not looking at it, just to see if I still like it. I DO!

First, I am not a fan of the band, but this cd brings new ideas and explores new sounds and textures. I saw the concert from the second row and it reminds me good times from the early 80's.

I am not a huge Crimson fan. I heard this album first when I was 18, an impressionable age to be sure. I know Court of the Crimson King, Red, Thrak, etc., but for my money, this is the best line up and best album by Crimson. Adrian Belew, fresh from tours with Zappa and the Talking Heads, infuses the band with polyrythmic intensity and Afro-Brazilian beats. To be sure, his voice is high and an acquired taste. Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, California Guitar Trio, etc.) holds down a nasty, stick infused bottom while Bill Bruford (Yes, XTC, etc.) provides amazing, frenetic fills. This group has the chops to compete with guitarist Robert Fripp and the result is some incredible, moody music. The opener, Elephant Talk, is a funny, funky dance beat of a song (and I don't associate Crimson with funny, but I think Belew brings some much needed levity to this album in counterpoint to lead guitarist Robert Fripp's pretentiousnes). Frame By Frame follows with hypnotic duelling guitars and soaring vocals - a real mind bender. Matte Kudasai is a pretty ballad with wailing seagull guitars; and if you purchase the newest edition, you get two versions of the song. Indiscipline is a mad, head-splitting romp (though it doesn't make your ears bleed like the double trio Crimson). Thela Hun Ginjeet (still covered by Primus/Les Claypool) is a rollicking, bouncy joy. The final two tracks, Sheltering Sky and Discipline, are very strong. You will either love or leave this disc, but it likely depends on your age and exposure to Crimson. For me, I would rate Discipline in the top 100 of all time for pop album releases.

Fripp spent 3 years after he broke up Crimson in 1975 studying the works of JG Bennett. Well, he really reinvented himself here with a new and improved version of Crimson. The tragedy is, it's one of the best records of the 80's that I'll bet not many people have ever heard!

Wall To Wall!.......2007-06-26

When you think of respected white rappers, you immediately think of Eminem and Paul Wall. Although not as flamboyant a rapper as Slim Shady, Paul Wall has made a name for himself without huge airplay or ridiculously high promotional budgets. He's still reppin' for the Dirty South and for Swishahouse with his latest album Get Money, Stay True. The album pretty much crept out with little attention from the industry or the Hip-Hop community as a whole, leaving Paul Wall to resort to word of mouth publicity only. And based on the selections on this album, the conversations should be favorable. The lead-off single "I'm Throwed" features Jermaine Dupri behind the boards as well as the hook man and comes off average at best for Paul Wall. Snoop Dogg pops up for "Everybody Know Me" while Freeway rises from the proverbial grave with the standout album track "On The Grind." Lil Keke pairs up with Paul for the Dirty South anthem of 2007 with "Break Em Off." Swishahouse labelmate Yung Redd holds his own on songs like "Get Your Paper" and "Call Me What U Want." Other well-chosen guest appearances include the raunchy female rapper Trina on "That Fire", R&B crooner Jon B on "Tonight", and Juelz Santana with a supremely good verse for "I'm Real, What Are You." With only a few missteps like the closing tracks "I Ain't Hard To Find" and "Slidin' On That Oil" featuring Expensive Taste, Get Money, Stay True is a suitable follow-up for Paul Wall. Now we can only hope that he'll get some money from the sale of this album so he can stay true in the future and not have to conform to the pressures of the industry to make a buck.

Great Sophomore Album By " The Peoples Champ"........2007-04-28

You know you've arrived when Jermaine Dupri is featured on your first single. Say what you will about local-boy-done-good, Paul Wall, but you can't deny his appeal and influence in the fickle rap industry. He's the man that is credited for grillin' the world up. For a while there was no where you could go where you wouldn't see an elaborately jeweled mouthpiece and hear its owner boast proudly, "I got my grill from Paul Wall!"

His hustle is well documented and respected. His music matches his grind. After his first major label release, "The Peoples' Champ" outsold his H-town contemporaries, (not to mention it was a far better album than "Who is Mike Jones") Paul went back into the studio, and he, along with the rest of his SwishaHouse camp including Lil Keke, whose upcoming album will more than likely place him atop the H-town rap scene) have been beatin blocks up with their mixtapes.

The streets have been salivating for some new "Pow Wow", and the white boy delivered a dope offering. "Get Money..." opens with the 15 rattling thump of "Get Ya Paper" ft Yung Redd. After he reinroduces you to the grind, he starts to show off. 7 of the album's 14 tracks have major features, including the Snoop Dogg-assisted, "Everybody Know Me", "That Fire" ft Trina, and " And "Bangin Screw" a tribute to DJ Screw which is the man who invented Chopped And Screwed. There're even a couple of tracks that Paul's new wife, Crys Wall (yeah, that's her name!) is singing on. She is an R&B artist signed to SwishaHouse Records as well.

Big things coming outta H-town in 2007. And seems like Paul Wall is leading the charge. Get Money, Stay True, I give it 4 Mics for this one.

Paul, We've Been On This Train Ride Before............2007-04-24

Paul Wall is obviously noted from being one of many solo, Houston, Texas rappers that hit mainstream back in 2005, alongside Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and Chamillionaire. Somehow he slid through the charts with his hit single "Sittin' Sidewayz", or the working for-the-ladies track "Girl", which very slickly sampled "Oh Girl" by R&B group The Chi-Lites. And both of those single helped him achieve a #1 album that sold well over 800,000 copies to date. Though, much like the aforementioned acts, Paul Wall had an issue bringing out solid, full-length albums when The People's Champ received mixed reviews from critics and Amazon reviewers, mostly hating on the boring, hood-cliché lyrics. And with Get Money, Stay True, it's the same story. Both uneven production and p!ss-poor lyrics aside, Paul Wall ain't a terrible rapper when it comes to his flow. He has a laid-back, half-singing and half-rapping flow that makes whatever he does at least slightly enjoyable, if nothing more. But taking the entire album in was the pain.

The beats on Get Money, Stay True are provided by himself, Mr. Lee (R. Kelly), Russel "Addict" Howard, Drumma Boy, KLC (C-Murder, Ludacris, Mystikal, Snoop Dogg), and Travis Barker. (What is HE doing here?) Production highlights are the Ludacris-sounding "Break `Em Off", Jermaine Dupri's "I'm Throwed", and the summery, old school feel of "On the Grind". But otherwise, most of the beats are fairly average, and the album suffers from uneven production, so even if a true-hearted fan were to purchase Get Money, Stay True, they'd probably be dissappointed too. There's a few beats that sound a bit like they were used twice, for example, "How Gangstas Roll" is alright, but sounds too much like "Girl" from The People's Champ. And although "Get Your Paper Up" and "Everybody Know Me" are decent, they sound exactly the same. There are also failing seducing tracks, like "Tonight" and "That Fire". Terrible production comes from "Call Me What You Want", which is just plain odd, and "I'm Real, What Are You?" and "I Ain't Hard to Find" are corny and come off rather unoffensive; "Slidin' On That Oil" being the wackest beat ever made.

But, the easy to find problem with Paul Wall's Get Money, Stay True are the almost intolerable lyrics he throws out on us. Any true Southern-rap fan can truly enjoy raps about being on "tha grind", but sometimes Paul Wall gets annoying with his odd comparisions and repetitiveness at times. And it seems he has little talent behind his money-cash-h*es talk, because he fails to talk about anything else. Ludacris and recently Rich Boy also cover similar topics, but they have actually show they have talent with some heartfelt tracks. If money, cars, ho*s, hustling, and drugs are the only and ONLY topics you cover, that is when you become untalented. "Bangin' Screw" and the terrible "How Gangstas Roll" are all about cars; both "Gimme That" and "Get Your Paper Up" are about making money; "Break `Em Off", "I Ain't Hard to Find", "I'm Real, What Are You?", and "On the Grind" all use boring hood themes like getting high or being gangsta; and both "Tonight" and "That Fire" are failing for-the-ladies songs, the latter being a lame story about a one night stand. As a matter of fact, it's difficult to find even one song that isn't about cars, getting high, girls, or full of annoying hood-cliches that have been tired out by 50 Cent already. To top it off, the album has some of the most laughable similes and metaphors you will ever hear. Just to show the worst, "Break `Em Off" has "I'm hotter than warm piss, berry grape Sunkist", "I'm Throwed" has "I'm fresher than a fruit bowl/Leaning like a gas gage", and other head-scratching comparisons show up throughout most, if not all of the album. The guest stars are okay, but most of them don't bring too much extra heat to this iceberg. A few hood-bars from Snoop Dogg are in "Everybody Know Me", but the rest of the guest stars don't help or hurt the album, like Trina's unneeded lines in the failed ladies-anthem "That Fire", Juelz Santana's monotonous feel in "I'm Real, What Are You?", and like most Southern rap albums, there's a ton of rappers you probably have never heard of. (E Class, Freeway, Expensive Taste, Drumma Boy, etc.) Also, Paul Wall's wife Crys Wall adds unnecessary damage to a couple of tracks on the album. There's really no business for your wife/husband or girlfriend/boyfriend to be on your album if they aren't an established artist, because most of the time, it never works. Get Money, Stay True shows Paul Wall can still bring some heat with his flow and occasionally decent production, but the album is overall bland, very uneven, and filled with sometimes laughable lyrics like a train wreck. Paul Wall has some hit singles on the album, as "I'm Throwed" and "On the Grind" surely sound like hits, but much like The People's Champ, unless you think you can tolerate an entire Paul Wall album, you'd best stay away. 2 stars.
