Engelbert Humperdinck, who at the circa 1968 height of his career shared a manager with fellow hunk Tom Jones, has never enjoyed the campy appreciation that has come to Jones in recent years--mostly because he's way too earnest compared to the teasingly all-man singer of "What's New Pussycat" and "She's a Lady." Humperdinck certainly deserves a place on some space-age bachelor's mix tape with the quietly ebullient "Quando Quando Quando," the quietly invitational "Winter World of Love," and the quietly fatalistic "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize"--maybe yours. Or at least your dad's. --Rickey Wright

Great album!!.......2007-04-28
I actually ordered this with with another item, this album has reach me, but the other item is still waiting for stock i presume..
Anyway, i am always a fan of oldies, but, i oftenest prefer compilation albums with various artist rather than a single artist.
But this album is an exception, it has all the songs that we all know.., such as "Release Me", "Quando, Quando, Quando".., "Am I That Easy To Forget ", "A Man Without Love", "There Goes My Everything", and my most favourite "The Last Waltz"..
The sound quality is awesome, it's an original recording remastered.., based on the info, it was first released back at the year of 1974, a good work for remastered this one.

engelbert humperdinck - his greatest hits.......2007-02-13
i grew up together with engelbert's songs - i'm born in 1942...this cd was gift to my cousin - she was missing this record so i bought it for her birthday...
His Of His Prime In One Collection.......2006-07-25
This CD is a re-issue of an album originally released on the Parrot label in the US in the early 70's and contains most of Engelbert's Top 40 hits and more memorable album cuts. Licensing conflicts between record companies lead to the exclusion of some early 70's material that was (like this album) originally issued on the Parrot label but overall this one disc set captures about 85 percent of Engelbert's most memorable hit material. This set does pre date 1976's "After The Lovin" album and single so that material is not included. Among the radio hits featured are Top 20 staples like "A Man Without Love", "Am I That Easy To Forget", "Winter World Of Love", and of course his break out hit "Release Me". For the casual fan or the budget conscious this is a good set.
The knight of the crooners!.......2005-11-01
Engelbert Humperdinck `s name has remained for almost five decades in the great musical stages. In Spain there is a term that fits so well to describe his magnetism: Duende.
He shone with radiant intensity in the Age of the great crooners, the most difficult, indeed: Frankie, Tony Bennet, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Matt Monroe, Bobby Vinton, Booby Goldsboro, Glenn Campbell, O.C. Smith, Otis Reading, Pat Boone, Kenny Rogers, Paul Anka and Neil Diamond (from time to time) among the most remarkable ones.
His peculiar style has deserved him the best acknowledgments all over the world. His multifacetic repertoire and elegant voice confers him presence and conviction every time he appears on stage.
His name is now a legend. Go for this admirable collection, you will enjoy it over and over.

Subtitled - Without A Worry In The World. 2003 compilation featuring 22 tracks from the beat poetry pop traditionalist. BR Music.
Album Details
22 great songs from one of the most celebrated and prolific songwriters of all time. Mckuen first started in the business as a vocalist with Lionel Hampton's band. He moved on to write songs for television that were performed by the likes of Danny Kaye, Henry Mancini, the Kingson Trio and more. He composed the scores of the films "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and "A Boy Named Charlie Brown", both of which were nominated for Academy Awards. His classical musical works are still celebrated around the world. Collaborations with French legend Jacques Brel endeared him to the other side of the pond, as well as his rich award winning poetry. Mckuen is held as simply one of the best, a true american treasure and this disc compactly collects his best recordings.

Vintage McKuen.......2007-05-16
If you remember fondly the poetry and music of Rod McKuen from the 60's and 70's as I do, you will enjoy this vintage McKuen CD. It includes many of Rod's best..."I'll Catch the Sun", "If You Go Away" and "The Importance of the Rose"...to name a few and one, "Soldiers Who Want to be Heroes" unfortunately hits home as deeply today as it did in the 1960's. I was so happy to find this CD as my McKuen collection was on 8-track tapes :-( After listening to a few of the songs, I dug out my McKuen poetry books, lit a candle, sipped a glass of wine and sunk back into the kinder and gentler days of my youth.
The Gravel Road of Memory Lane.......2006-11-10
I am a contemporary artist and love listening to this while I paint. This CD is a wonderful compilation of Rod McKuen's work. It transports you to another place and time and some songs, particularly "I'll Catch The Sun" give you goose bumps immediately. It's a very romantic group of songs and Rod McKuen's voice is unique and timeless etched with a deep melancolia that's very endearing.
The leaflet that comes with the CD is more like a little book with a lot of fascinating reading about the "how's and when's and where's" of every song which makes it all the more interesting to listen to. A great buy! Go see my work on www.diwest.com.au
Purchased as Anniversary Gift.......2006-03-09
My husband and I had listened to Rod McKuen's Live at Carnegie Hall when we were dating. This CD is good, but not like the other (which is very expensive). We enjoyed the songs and they brought back lots of memories none-the-less.
"The Poet Laureate".......2005-03-08
This "Greatest Hites Of Rod McKuen" is a fantastic collection of his best recordings. Rod has a most "poetic" delivery as well as abilitiy to write lyric verses.
I first hear "Doesn't Anbod Know My Name" on a Kingston Trio album ears ago . . . i have alwas had a special place in my memory for that song . .and to hear Rod himself deliver his own words in music is a great treat. His voice wraps around his words and thoughts and sends them out to touch our hearts and souls. He succeeds so well on this song.
another McKuen classic is "Jean" from the motion picture "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brod" -- i first heard this song of Rod's composition by "Oliver" . . and i love both renderings, Oliver's and Rod's . . . the both evoke the lonsome feeling of being out alone in the heather, missing a lost love (lost by death? or lost by a departure perhaps) . . . and it is difficult to not tear-up a bit whenever you play this track.
Rod does an exccellent job with Gale Caldwell's "Cycles" . . a song i first heard by Frank Sinatra . . . andRod also wrote an entire album of songs for Mr. Sinatra . . two kindred souls. And Rod on collection also has his "Love's Been Good To Me" which Frank recorded on his album of Rod McKuen penned songs.
Ahhhh! and then there's the Jaques Brel song which Rod put english lyrics to: "If You Go Away" . . . i first heard this song sung by Australian songstress Lana Cantrell . . . and i fell in love with Lana and this song . . . and now i get to hear it by the man who wrote the english verses.
There are twenty-two tracks on this collection . . and every one a "keeper" . . . i'm forever glad that they are now preserved for all posterity: examples of a true artist at his best!
I thank you od McKuen for your contribution to the wonders of our musical and poetic heritage. You are "the best" . . .and this album presents some of "your ver best" so this it can touch our souls.
(ha . . and i seem to remember Rod McKuen in some "beach movies" from the early sixties . . . Rod, you certainly have experienced it all!) :)
Quite Disappointing.......2004-04-24
I have been a Rod McKuen follower since the 1970s and miss some of my early LPs that were unfortunately stolen years ago. So I ordered this CD in good faith but when I played it was amazed to hear that the sound and tempo of the songs (in my mind based from hearing them years ago) was faster, possibly to fit all the selections on one CD (I don't know). End product is a sound that is NOT romantic OR mood setting, not peaceful, rather racing through the selections to the point of annoyance. Save your money up to buy older and in good condition copies of the originals, like I am doing.

Amazon.com essential recording
Curiously, yet not surprisingly given the enormity of his sway, Billie Holiday's greatest vocal influence was "Pops"--Louis Armstrong, whose trumpet was his first signature (though he's often credited with being the first great jazz singer as well). One hears Armstrong in Holiday's sense of phrasing, timing, and the warmth she invests in a lyric. This package, containing such touchstone Holiday renderings as "I Cried for You," "Body and Soul," and "When a Woman Loves a Man" (poetic, given the fact that Billie was notoriously unlucky at love), also boasts her signature song, "God Bless the Child." Her accompanists are a hall-of-fame lot, including trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Buck Clayton; saxmen Lester Young (with whom she had a close relationship), Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, and Harry Carney; drummers Cozy Cole and Jo Jones; bassists John Kirby and Walter Page; and her frequent pianist, Teddy Wilson. --Willard Jenkins
Customer Reviews:
Biilie's phrasing was a heart-to-heart with the whole world--and no one ever wanted to go home.......2007-07-08
Billie Holiday could sing jazz and the blues unlike any other singer. Ever. Her voice was the ultimate instrument which could convey all the sorrows of her personal life as she sang about life, love and the pain of being discriminated against because she was African-American. We will never see another quite like Billie; this CD of thirteen of Billie's greatest hits from Sony doesn't even begin to scrape the surface of what this remarkably talented lady could do.
The CD track set begins with a number that's actually sassy as well as jazzy; Billie sings of how Emily Brown's "comin' to town;" but it's "Miss Brown to you." Listen for Benny Goodman on clarinet and Roy Eldridge on trumpet. Teddy Wilson does a great job on piano, too. Even though Billie was only 20 when this was recorded, she was already working with the best!
"What A Little Moonlight Can Do" gets a breakneck pace and a jazzy interpretation that would make any jazz artist green with envy. Billie's voice is light and clear as a bell; yet she imparts all the right emotions to her audience. Once again, Billie recorded this with The Teddy Wilson Orchestra. Teddy plays piano; Benny Goodman plays clarinet and Roy Eldridge plays trumpet. And ooh, how they jam!
"I Cried For You" gives Billie the chance to sing of how she cried for a man who left her--but she no longer cares for him and she won't waste one minute more worrying about that loser. The musicians work wonders before Billie even comes in; but when Billie comes in the number soars and Billie takes flight! Billie imparts the sense of all the pain in her past and how she's happy to have found a new man who loves her more. Teddy Wilson again plays piano; and listen for Harry Carney on both the clarinet and the baritone saxophone. Excellent!
"Billie's Blues" stuns you with its sublime treatment of the blues; Billie wrote this number and Artie Shaw himself plays clarinet! Billie sings about how her man treats her so poorly; and you believe every word she sings--she's THAT good at sharing her feelings from the depths of her soul.
"I Can't Get Started" is a number recorded live when Billie performed at The Meadowbrook Ballroom in Cedar Grove, New Jersey with Count Basie & His Orchestra. Despite the passage of time and the surface noise on this track, I distinctly feel everything Billie put into this song. Billie was unlucky in love and the pain of this problem helps her to deliver "I Can't Get Started" as if the lyrics were a intimate, personal and very private confession to you from the bottom of her heart. Wow.
"God Bless The Child" was one of Billie's most famous signature songs; and she delivers this with all her might. Billie sings so well because she truly means every word of the lyrics. This is not just another chanteuse singing a ballad; this is Billie Holiday once again sharing her most intimate feelings with her audience. Roy Eldridge plays trumpet and I predict you will enjoy this number very, very much.
"Gloomy Sunday" became associated with many a suicide; anyone deep in despair and hopelessness can identify with "Gloomy Sunday." Billie sings this so well because of the countless times she experienced these very emotions in her private life. "The Very Thought Of You" swings ever so slightly to infuse this ballad with just the right amount of energy and romantic effect. Billie's excellent diction, coupled with her light and clear voice, lets her perform "The Very Thought Of You" with twice the panache that any other singer could ever have infused into it.
The CD track set ends with the classic "Body And Soul." Billie sings of how she wants a man who doesn't love her in return. Billie sings from the bottom of her heart as she draws upon her personal pain from unrequited love. As always, Billie's delivery is flawless.
The liner notes include an informative essay by Timme Rosenkrantz; and the black and white pictures of Holiday are very tastefully arranged. The song credits and recording dates are there for you, too.
We will never again see another Billie Holiday. During her all too brief life she gave us more than most entertainers and "celebrities" do in a full lifetime. We are so much richer for Billie sharing her endless talents with us; and fortunately we can continue to experience her talents on CD for ages to come.
Beautiful.......2007-01-22
Billie Holiday is an amazing artist and I am proud to have her CD.
Fave Jazz Album!.......2005-05-27
Every tune is fab! Thankfully, the remastering has not diminished the old scratchy sound typically found in recordings from this era.
This is why I hate most modern jazz. This has genuine feeling, a raw sound, natural flow, and catchy licks--things lacking these days, IMO.
Pick this up if you are not a huge jazz collector, but just wish to add something worthwile to your otherwise ecclectic collection of music.
Early greats from Lady Day.......2005-04-30
I heard this CD while I was walking around Borders and just had to have it. These are early recordings - the music is fresh and joyous - the vocals are superb. I especially love the recordings of "Miss Brown To You," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" (a treat), "Some Other Spring" and my very favorite, "I Can't Get Started." I have other Holiday recordings. However, this is the one I play again and again. I only wish that it had "Good Morning Heartache" on it. Oh, well.
A great place to start, an album with a special treat!.......2005-03-11
Almost everything Billie Holiday recorded, and maybe everything Billie recorded before 1941, like these sides, was great. Certainly, this collection doesn't have any of the very important work Billie Did during WWII for Commodore, nor does it have some of th exciting Jazzy recordings Billie did for Verve in the late 1940s and 1950s. Nor are any of the outstanding live performances by Billie for Jazz at the Philharmonic or in her Carneige Hall concerts on this CD.
With Billie who recorded for about 30 years on a lot of labels, the tendency was, particularly back in the days of LPs, for every owner of some Billie material to put out whatever they could crip together as Billie's greatest hits.
I have to say that I was introduced to Billie's greatest work, that in the 1930s, by owning this collection on Vinyl. This is nice fun and engaging music. On some of the great standards, she really makes it. Like all of her recordings for Columba and its ancestors back then, John Hammond Sr, gathers together some of the masters of Black and white swing Jazz to join her. Very shortly after she started recording, the greatest names in Jazz would flock to her sessions and play on her recordings for litte because of the innovation and creativity Billie showed as a jazz creator in her own right.
One special treat here is "I can't get started" with the Count Basie Orchestra. Billie was the first female singer with Count Basie's band, but because she was booked to Columbia and the Count had been shanghied by Decca, there were no studio recordings of Billie singing with the Basie Orchestra. This is an enormous loss to human culture. "I can't get started" is one of the two air checks (recordings made off of radio broadcasts) we have of Billie with the Baseities. The other "Swing it Brother Swing" is available on an album with air checks from a Basie broadcast from the Savoy Ballroom.
I really love the way her singing interplays with the backing particularly from the reed section, and love the sinuous solo Lester takes which is more mellow and romantic than the one he takes in the small group Billie Holiday recording of "I can't get started."
All of this is nice music. If you are not ready to take the plunge and get everything from the 1930s and early 1940s (to be followed by everything from the 1940s and then most of the stuff from the 1950s) this is as good as any place else to start. Nice fun, wonderful music, great jazz in both her voice and in the way that the sidemen swing in her honor.

Two tracks from Nancy Wilson's early Capitol Records years outclass everything else on this compilation, which otherwise concentrates on the jazz/pop/lite-R&B singer's '80s and '90s work for Columbia. On the two torchy Capitol tracks, "Guess Who I Saw Today" and "Save Your Love for Me" (the latter from Wilson's 1962 collaboration with Cannonball Adderley), she blends strong, bluesy chops with bittersweet sentiments. The more recent stuff is hardly as straightforward; most of the time, her vocals are swamped by ricky-tick adult-contemporary production that renders the music fit only for smooth-jazz radio. And when Wilson does slip into a stripped-down trio format with the likes of Brad Mehldau and Christian McBride on Stephen Sondheim's "Loving You," she still has to contend with bland duet partner Peabo Bryson. Greatest Hits serves mainly to point out the fact that Nancy Wilson best uses her voice these days as host of public radio's Jazz Profiles. --Rickey Wright

Wow! I didn't think Nancy was cool.......2006-12-28
This was the first recording i ever bought by her and let me tell you i was truly impressed with every song on this recording and when i am tired of listening to a thin voiced diva or some wanna be new male singer i put nancy on and listen to anyone of the classic recording from i can't make you love me to if i had my way and truly then am i listening to what music was meant to be.
Stop Trashing This Greatest Hits Compilation.......2003-12-10
I am sick and tired of Nancy's fans on Amazon trashing her 80's and 90's recordings at Columbia. Granted the material wasn't as strong as her Sixties stuff, but what is? Times change and even artists have to grow and move on, and Nancy Wilson is no exception. The Eighties saw a proliferation of slick R&B/Adult Contemporary material due to the enormous success of artists like Anita Baker and Sade. I'm sure Nancy had Ms. Baker in mind when she and her producers selected material for her Columbia albums. We're talking about a 20 to 25 year time span since her Sixties heyday and it would be unfair to compare all this stuff to her work at Capitol.
I would suggest to any fan of Nancy Wilson or Dinah Washington (whom Nancy bears remarkable stylistic similarities) to give this Greatest Hits compilation a try, especially if you see a great price somewhere. The CD is still impeccably sung (just like all Nancy Wilson albums are -- no matter what decade we're talking about), and yes, the years have been kind to Nancy because her incisive phrasing and breath control are sharp as ever. Though one or two tracks here are over-produced, the rest is quite enjoyable. If nothing else, buy this CD just to hear how well Nancy's vocals have aged. Like fine wine, some things just get better, and Ms. Wilson is one of them.
Easy to Love.......2001-12-01
Nancy Wilson -- great voice, great songs, timeless class. The Greatest Hits is always a good place to start!
Sheer Elegance.......2001-07-04
"Hello like before" was my introduction to Nancy and from that song there was no turning back. This Greatest Hits Collection was a big wake up call as to the dynamic voice that is Nancy Wilson. Her songs are like butter and I have never regretted buying this album simply for the song that got me searching high and low to discover who the artist was.
I recommend this CD wholeheartedly. If a bit timid try the Album "If I had My Way" and I promise you, your next purchase of Nancy's will definitely be this collection.

Don't get fooled by the misleading CD title. This compilation is unfortunately limited to the Sony/Columbia output. The great singer with the great arrangers and the great musicians and the Great American Songbook has unfortunately gone lost in the past. Though her voice, vibrato, and general perfect are still superb, the repertoire is widely skipable.

If Columbia Records was trying to cash in quickly with this 1958 package before heartthrob Mathis's string ran out, the joke was--happily--on them, since it ended up staying on the Billboard charts for 490 weeks. These, of course, are his earliest smashes, and for the most part, his best: the likes of "Chances Are" and "Wonderful! Wonderful!" are young people's music the way, for instance, the '50s Sinatra wasn't, and Mathis was growing up fast. He'd rarely sound quite so earnestly embracing again. --Rickey Wright

You can't go wrong..........2007-07-09
This album is more than nostalgia, and despite some sappy lyrics, (which I have to add are beautifully written), Johnny is simply fantastic. I am a classical/Flamenco/progressive rock/oldies, and not particularly a Mathis fan, and yet this recording belongs in everyones collection for those subtle times in life when we give thought to love, a woman, and the magic that seems to live in the air in such moments. The orchastrations and background vocals accent Johnny's gifted voice and create quite a unique mood. The recordings are as fresh as when first relased way back when. A time of...if there ever was such a thing...(yes, of course there was)...innocense. I also enjoy A Certain Smile, Maria, and A Time for Us.
not worth it.......2007-01-13
4 of the 12 songs on this disc are his greatest hits. the others are good productions, but not what a greatest hits collection should include.... I wanted the songs I grew up with. I got 4 of them.
Johnny's Greatest Hits - The First of The Greatest Hits Genre and Still One of The Best.......2005-10-14
Many people do not know that Johnny's Greatest Hits was the first album to be titled as such...
Johnny was scheduled to record a new album when this album was released, but was out of the country and unable to record. His manager decided to put together a compilation of previously released songs from his prior albums and release them as a collection in place of an album of new material from Johnny. They searched for an appropriate title for the album and ended up simply calling it Johnny's Greatest Hits.
To say the album did extremely well upon its initial release is an understatement in every way. This album spent 490 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. That is the equivalent of 9 1/2 years! No other Greatest Hits album has come close.
Due to the enormous success of this album, every other artist capitalized on the idea and now everyone eventually releases a Greatest Hits album, even if they haven't really had a lot of hits...
The songs on this album are really all of Johnny's early career hits such as Misty, Chances Are, It's Not for Me to Say, When Sunny Gets Blue and The Twelfth of Never, etc.
Greatest Hits albums allow a new listener to be introduced to an artist without having to buy all of their albums in order to get a cross section of the artist's collective material. This album does a great job at pulling out the great songs Johnny has recorded while being easy on the wallet.
This album would be great for a quiet evening at home or to put on in the background when having guests over. Of course for the lovers, this album also fits the bill in the Romance department.
Johnn'y voice is crystal clear and deliberate on all of these songs. The orchestrations work with his voice and do not overpower him. A great blend for a great artist and a great choice for any fans of Adult Contemporary music!
Wonferful, wonderful!.......2005-10-10
In my opinion, ballad singers like Johnny Mathis are falling off the radar. Tt's probably a generational thing and it's a shame, because oh! that voice! It's arguably the best of the type, smooth and sweet.
Wonderful music...but.......2005-07-27
The songs are great but the sound is so flat. No highs, no lows, no dynamics - could have been a keeper.

You could fill box set after box set with Nat "King" Cole's work--and those are certainly out there--and never hit a less-than-stellar note. But for the creme de la creme, it'd be hard to fault this career-spanning, 22-song retrospective. From the swinging jump blues of "Straighten Up and Fly Right" to the easy lope of his definitive "Route 66" to the lush balladry of "Mona Lisa," every facet of the great singer-pianist's is explored. Bookended by Cole's original version of "Unforgettable" and his posthumous duet with daughter Natalie, this collection provides an ideal introduction to--or a stirring reminder of--Nat "King" Cole's legacy. --David Sprague
Customer Reviews:
Romantic Night for Listeners.......2007-07-09
This old stand by is a must for a guy's collection.
Nat's smooth, spacious voice fills the room with electric sparks and coziness together. I find it's one of my most worn out CDs that I own. I don't only listen when I'm alone with my girl. I also listen if I've had a pretty agitating day.
He has an effect on his listeners thgat time could never fade.
A must have!
Where's Stardust!!!!??????????????????????????.......2006-12-13
This CD has beautiful tracks - my favorites being the two Unforgettable tracks. But how can a Nat King Cole Greatest Hits recording NOT have Stardust?!?!?! That's Unforgivable!
Good, but not great.......2006-08-25
These are some excellent songs, but the sound quality wasn't the best. I thought that they should have added some of his other songs and took out a few on the track listing. THe final track, the duet with his daughter, was beautiful and eery all at once. Perhaps it was me, but his voice sounded almost ghostly when I heard it. I couldn't imagine the emotions she was feeling, singing a duet with her passed on father (I also can't imagine why she would agree to, but that's another story). This album isn't bad, but I wouldn't say greatest.
Unforgettable .......2006-05-28
What makes a voice distinctive and memorable? Nat (King )Cole I believe had the smoothest voice of any male singer. Clarity and a sureness in phrasing was also gifts of his. Aside from 'Unforgettable' the songs I best remember are 'Mona Lisa' and 'Nature Boy'. But this recording also includes originals of the 'Nat King Cole trio'. It also includes the famous duet put together of 'Unforgettable' from his early version and his daughter Natalie Cole's recording made after he had passed on. That particular recording was a 'knockout' sentimental and beautiful.
A great collection of jazz, country, and love songs!.......2006-01-09
I think this is a great collection. It includes the country-style "Ramblin' Rose," some jazzy tunes and the great love songs of Nat such as "Unforgettable," "Mona Lisa," and others. Wow! There was only one Nat King Cole, and if you could only own one cd, I would recommend this one or "Love Songs." Yet this cd gives you a mixture of all Nat was best at.

One of the best .......2006-12-21
Sinatra exaggerated when he said Tony Bennett is the greatest male crooner of them all. Obviously that distinction belongs to Sinatra. But Tony Bennett with his rich deep voice , his at times powerful feeling is without doubt one of the best. 'The Shadow of her Smile' 'San Francisco' ' When Joanna Left me' are after all the years still a great pleasure to listen to.
Some don't quite get it.......2005-06-04
Sinatra and other crooners are good, no doubt about it. But those who hear only Bennett's "raspy" voice and cannot comprehend SOUL, won't like him. If you appreciate heart and soul, Bennett is for you. If all you want to listen to is polish, maybe you don't quite get what art and music is all about.
OK, But Nothing To Swing About.......2003-08-14
You want great ballad singing? Buy a CD by Vic Damone, Mel Torme, or Matt Monro. You want great swing singing? Buy a CD by Bobby Darin or Frank Sinatra. You want singing that's not quite as good in either category, then perhaps Tony Bennett is right for you. This is an okay collection, but Bennett's raspy-voiced screaming is certainly not for everyone. Certain singers, like Bennett, assume that if you have a powerful voice (even if its tonality is unpleasant) you must sing all songs at the top of your lungs. Rarely do such histrionics add anything to a pretty melody or romantic lyric. Bennett likes to think of himself as a great "jazz singer" who performs the compositions of Jewish-American songwriters and black orchestra leaders. I guess this self-description makes him feel "hip." In fact, Bennett is often a screechingly annoying balladeer and on uptempo numbers his style is about as hip as Conway Twitty's. And all that screaming!!! Tony, your head is about to explode!!!!
Tony Bennett is a minor leaguer among major leaguers.......2003-06-12
I agree with the music fan from Potts Grove, Pennsylvania: Tony Bennett is a screamer with a grating, raspy voice who too often sounds like his head is about to explode. Bennett's "Greatest Hits" album has some nice tunes like "San Francisco" and "I Wanna Be Around," but many of the other selections feature Bennett's typical screaming at the top of his lungs even when the tune does not call for such volume and vocal histrionics. It's true, when I think back at watching him perform on TV over the years, his neck and face did grow red and contort as he screamed out lyrics. Like Barbra Streisand, Bennett must think that good singing equates with yelling and screaming. When he does keep his human vibrato under control, he sings a nice (although not great) ballad. He also does have good taste in the classic pop material he records, but his voice grows increasingly grating as you listen to it. With Sinatra, Darin, Martin, Crosby, Matt Monro, etc. dead, there are few classic popular singers remaining (Jack Jones and Vic Damone are the only two who come to mind)and so Bennett fills a necessary gap----but he is no Vic Damone or Jack Jones as a balladeer, nor is he a Bobby Darin or Frank Sinatra as a swinging belter of uptempo tunes. He is just there....tasteful but often annoying. Better invest in a pair of ear plugs before listening to this CD.
Bennett Another Great Italian Crooner.......2003-06-03
Aside from the classic "I Left My Heart In San Francisco," Tony Bennett's vocalizing is an acquired taste. But Bennett does grow on you. Initially, his voice is a bit grating and the listener may grow concerned that the veins in his neck might pop at any minute. Eventually, however, you realize that while he is not an exceptionally smooth vocalist (like Como or Damone), he is nonetheless a very good one. He has a powerful voice and, while he at times awkwardly tries too hard to swing like Bobby Darin (who, in my opinion, stands alone as a master uptempo vocalist), he usually has good taste in his choice of songs. Tony Bennett may not have the looks, panache, or magnetism of Bobby Darin or Dean Martin, but like his two paisanos, he can sing. Add his name to a list that also includes Vic Damone, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Frankie Laine, Nick Lucas, Al Martino, Russ Columbo, Buddy Greco, Julius LaRosa, etc., and you have a veritable who's who of American popular singers, all of Italian descent. His "Greatest HIts" CD is a must for any serious collector of American popular song.

Customer Reviews:
Jerry Vale's Billboard Hits & More.......2005-04-27
This CD collection of songs contains some of Jerry Vale's chart topping hits, and some of his finest vocals. I love the CD cover too. With Jerry Vale standing on the beach, it's reminiscent of the 1970's when Jerry Vale would appear on shows like "Mike Douglas" or "Merv Griffin". In the 70's, popular daytime variety shows were sometimes shot at locations away from the normal network studios, like Florida or Hawaii, where performers like Vale would get a chance to perform on the beach, singing the popular songs of the time.
"Innamorata", recorded in 1952, was one of Jerry Vale's first charted hits. (His first charted hit was "You Could Never Give Me Back Your Heart" in 1952, which is available on the excellent CD titled "The Essential 50's Singles".) "Two Purple Shadows" reached #20 on the Billboard charts in 1954. And later recorded by Elvis Presley in 1967, "You Don't Know Me" reached number 14 on the charts for Vale in 1956. In 1958, "Pretend You Don't See Her", written by Steve Allen, reached #7, and regained fame again in 1990 when the movie "Goodfellas" used Jerry Vale in a cameo appearance to perform the song. That song is also listed as one of the top songs with odd lyrics..."Pretend you don't see her, my heart, although she is coming our way, pretend you don't need her, my heart, but smile and pretend to be gay." The classic jazz-like mood song, "Solitaire" is a special treat. It sounds like it came from a scene in a 1940's movie, or a smoke-filled 1950's night club, and because Jerry Vale completely changes his vocal styling for this song, you wouldn't even know it was him singing it if you didn't double check the CD cover. I love it. The hit song, "Have You Looked Into Your Heart", reached #24 in 1964, which is impressive, keeping in mind that groups like the Beatles were also on the charts at the same time. "Somewhere", used in the movie "Marco The Magnificent", is one of my favorite Jerry Vale songs. Considering that the music score was written in Octaves, it takes a professional singer to pull it off like Jerry Vale does. It's very dramatic and gives Jerry the chance to show off his phenomenal vocal range, power, and high notes, sending chills down your spine. I love "For Mama". It's a sad song full of Italian culture, poetic, and beautifully portrayed in Jerry's trademark vocal styling.
Jerry Vale had many more hits that are not on this CD. Hits like "Time Alone Will Tell", "It's All In The Game", "Where Were You When I Needed You", "I Found You Just In Time", and "All I Ever Wanted", to mention a few. However, this CD is an excellent start. With it's variety of songs, this CD gives Jerry Vale a chance to show off his full range of professional vocal styles.
Jerry Vale is Jerry Vale........2000-10-18
The CD cover shows Jerry Vale on the shore, waves gently rolling and pooling at his feet, intently gazing far straight into the vast blue horizon.
The picture accurately depicts what this compilation is all about. Like the waves, Jerry's song delivery is as serene and peaceful; and like the horizon, his vocal range is as limitless in its range. Here is an artist in a medium that he knows best, a singer in total harmony with his song which is further reinforced by the soothing and quivering quality of a crystal-clear voice and the seemingly effortless depth and feelings that go into the performance.
The songs that made Jerry Vale Jerry Vale are here: Go Chase A Moonbeam, And This Is My Beloved, Enchanted, Innamorata, Prima Donna, Solitaire, You Don't Know Me, Pretend You Don't See Her, all delivered with unequalled gusto by this maestro of song.
If you want to know what Jerry Vale is all about, this album is the best place to start.

I like Jo Ann, always have and I like rag time.......2004-05-24
Jo Ann is a really good rag time player, but I agree with the other reviewer that she plays the tunes too fast, especailly Maple Leaf Rag. Alas, that is her style. She ain't going to change it just because we are critical of it. Despite that criticism I still like this record.
Great toe tapping music!.......2001-08-31
Jo Ann Castle has to be the best ragtime piano player to come along since Big Tiny, and she plays with her normal gusto! I know some think "rag" should be played a certain way, but I'm thankful New Orleans never listened to them. If you remember ragtime piano from the Welk show and liked it, you'll love this CD. You may even want to get Vol. 2. You can't sit and listen to this and not start moving hands and feet to the music.

Smooth, relaxing, gentle, easy to listen to, Jack Jones has a silk quality to the tone in his voice. Listening to this CD puts you into a different place at a different time in your life. Highly recommended even for young people who would like to relax and forget the traffic they just drove through.

Excellent singing and great songs..........2003-04-20
In my opinion, Jack Jones is the most technically proficiant of all the "crooners" (Sinatra, Cole, Williams, etc.), and this disc shows his talents marvelously. Not only does his voice convey all the innocence that this style requires, but he never misses a note and the song selection is wonderful. Featured are such legendary composers as Bacharach, Mancini, Kaempfert, Cole Porter, and even Lennon/McCartney. You simply need hear his voice on Mancini's "Dear Heart" and especially on Bert Kaempfert's "Lady" to be conviced that Jones is the best big band singer ever.
