Amazon.com essential recording

Born in the U.S.A. is an album painted in big, broad strokes. But it was still too subtle for some--namely politicians who tried to tap the title track as a jingoistic anthem when it is in fact a bitter diatribe by a Vietnam War vet whose country forgot him. The rest of the album is a glorious grab bag of radio-ready populist anthems--his best display of pure pop songwriting ever--including "No Surrender," "Dancing in the Dark," "Bobby Jean," and "Glory Days" alongside more circumspect numbers such as "My Hometown" and "I'm On Fire." It's not true that there's no arguing with success, but in this case Springsteen's widespread acclaim was warranted. With Born in the U.S.A., all those predictions from a decade earlier--that Springsteen was the future of rock--had come true. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The premier rock album of the 1980s.......2007-07-07

Bruce Springsteen's seventh LP, 1984's "Born in the USA" is one that marks a change in the rock legend. On this album, he makes the change from a working class underdog to a bona fide American rock star. Bruce has represented many different things throughout his long and winding career, and "Born in the USA" is among the most interesting for sure. Here, he tends to move away from the tales of the depressed New Jersey working class and instead appears to comment more on America as a whole. He deals with the war, growing up, and relationships in a more broad and accessible manner. However, the songwriting on "Born in the USA" is arguably the finest of his incredible career. "Born in the USA" is chock full of pure rock anthems, the kind with the slamming drums and squealing guitar that made them so memorable. The band is at their finest here, with the sax of Clarence Clemmons and contributions of Max Weinberg and Gary Tallent. "Born in the USA" also has its share of slower, subtle tracks that are equally as effective. From a lyrical standpoint, from a musical standpoint, "Born in the USA" is the perfect rock album and arguably the finest of Bruce Springsteen's discography.

The album begins with the classic title track, an anthem of epic proportions. Musically, it's quite simple and repetitive, yet effective. Bruce narrates from the view of a Vietnam vet, who despite his troubles with family, war, and country, still proudly proclaims to be "Born in the USA." This song is really moving from a lyrical perspective. "Cover Me" is an excellent upbeat rock n' roll song, very memorable and catchy. "Darlington County" is a happy, summertime song, evoking an earlier Sprinsteen. "Working on the Highway" is easily one of my favorites, a fast, simple number with great guitar and organ instrumentation. I also absolutely love "Downbound Train," a depressed yet hopeful and inspiring song recounting a relationship gone sour. The short "I'm on Fire" is subtly ingenious, beautiful and touching. "No Surrender" and the very sad "Bobby Jean" bring a classic rock spirit, while remaining with the album's theme. "I'm Going Down" may be my favorite Springsteen song at least musically, it's so underrated. It almost has a country vibe to it, it showcases one of Bruce's finest performances and the songwriting is just great. The album closes with three of his best known songs. "Glory Days" is the anthemic look at the past through the eyes of one man. The amazing "Dancing in the Dark" is one of the best arrangements Bruce has put together, providing an inspired performance through his verses and a unique musical approach. Lastly, the slow "My Hometown" is a moving conversation from a father to a young boy.

It's incredible that so many huge hits and incredible singles could have been on one album. Looking back twenty years later, at least five or six of these songs still receive constant radio rotation and are remembered as classic rock singles. But "Born in the USA" is more than just a rock n' roll monster, it's an inspired take on American life and the way people live. This album is simply a must have for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars 80's gold.......2007-04-10

Born in the U.S.A. is one of Bruce Springsteen's best albums, and trust me, I'm not a guy who normally obsesses over what radio stations play all the time. I really gave other Springsteen albums a chance, and I simply believe this is still his best album.

I have a lot of good memories connected to Born in the U.S.A. I remember when this album came out, and I was barely starting kindergarten. Back then it almost seemed natural that this commercial album would be the next direction Bruce would take his music, and a HUGE feeling came over many of us before this album was released that his incredibly popularity was just around the corner. It's a feeling I've had for years, and one I've never forgotten. This album just feels like it was meant to exist.

I love every song, especially "cover me" and "dancing in the dark". Meanwhile, the songs that didn't get as much attention on the radio end up sounding just as good and melodic to me anyway.

I believe Bruce Springsteen has lots of good songs on other albums released both before and after Born in the U.S.A., but I will always remember when Born in the U.S.A. came on the scene, and it seemed to stun the music world for a while. Great times.

5 out of 5 stars What was overrated is now underrated..........2007-01-28

Alright, I've finally got to throw my 2 cents in on this album...

This album gets a bad rap nowadays for being too... radio-friendly.. which is not necessarily a bad thing. Every song on this album seems like it was tailor-made to be a single (with the exception of "Downbound Train"). However, it doesn't lose that greasy, gasoline-tinged effect that Springsteen's music is known for.

If you're older than 18, you've more than likely heard at least a couple of these songs before. And trust me, if you liked those, you'll like the rest of the album.

The album starts with a bang, and cthen proceeds to explore the grit, dirt, and agony that is working class life. Some songs have to do with love, some with labor, and some with just getting out and escaping.

The only problem I have with this album has is that it has a minor dip towards the end. "No Surrender" and "Bobby Jean", although good songs by themselves, interrupt the flow of the album as they are more generic than the other songs and causes the album's support to collapse momentarily. This, however, is redeemed with the 1-2-3-4 punch that is "I'm Goin Down" -> "My Hometown."

Very good album overall. The only two Springsteen albums I like better are "Nebraska" and "Born to Run" (and I've heard them all)

5 out of 5 stars "Born in the USA".......2006-12-16

It's by far the greatest Springsteen album yet. It has the studio versions of the best dozen songs. The only songs I'm surprised it doesn't have are "Badlands" and "Born to Run." Overall, it has good quality music from Bruce's original versions of all the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Past due for remastering.......2006-11-08

This album needs to be remastered. I'd also like to add that if & when they ever get around to it they need to put as a bonus track "Pink Cadillac" since it was the b-side to "Dancing In the Dark" and gained it's own claim to fame on Radio & in Clubs. You can't find the song anywhere, not on the Greatest hits or the Essential Collection...what a shame.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2003-12-24

The CD was a true disappointment. The songs/carols are almost unrecognizable. I wish I had never ordered it. My expectations were so much higher. It didn't meet my tatse at all even though I don'yt go for the regular Holiday ho-ho-ho music either. But stay away from this CD, after 10 minutes you are sick of it.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Beautiful.......2000-11-25

This fabulous cd is now the standard mood-setter in my house at Christmas time. It's not your typical Rudolf or Little Drummer Boy fare, but a collection of carols you'll KNOW you've heard before even though you don't know the names, and everything, even the unfamiliar, eminate a serene, peaceful holiday feeling. Quink's voices are pristine and soaring, the arrangements are beautiful, and the melodies (especially "What Sweeter Music") haunt me all year long. Put it in your changer and hit "REPEAT".

3 out of 5 stars Cool LP-style Slipcase but not so great sound!.......2005-08-27

This is probably my favourine Bruce album and the tracks still sound as good as they always did but now we get them in a cool lp sleeve format.

Why just 3 stars then? Well, the recording isn't remastered and so the sound is about the same quality as the cheaper U.S. press that you can get you hands on elsewhere. So unless you are a very big fan of lp sleeves like I am, you may not want to spend the extra bucks on this.

Don't get me wrong, the album is still great with regards the tracks but I guess if you already have this, what's it going to take to make you wanna get another version of the same thing? I'm guessing it's either improved sound quality and/or improved packaging. This disc only fulfils one of these two criteria so you decide what you wanna do.

By the way, it's the same with the other titles in this format like "Born To Run" and "Darkness...Town" etc. just so you know. As I don't already have copies of these discs, I didn't mind too much but I don't know about you.
