Rory In His Prime.......2007-06-19
Calling Card is mesmerising.Take a listen to pure Blues Guitar.Rory Gallagher was the finest and on Calling Card he was in his prime. If you want a starting point on Rory this is a good reference point. Also check out Irish Tour '74 and Photo Finish. The greatest Irishman that ever lived.
A slight detour for Rory, but worth it.......2007-05-24
I have to admit that it took me a while to get into this album. Being such a big fan of the raw sound on most of his other work, I was a little taken aback---at first---by the slightly slicker sound here, courtesy of producer Roger Glover. However, I persisted and gradually the songs won me over, and it's now one of my favorite Rory studio albums. (no studio album could possibly compare with "Irish Tour 74'---no album can compare, PERIOD!) Rory really opened up his songwriter on this, and we get everything from all-out rockers like "Secret Agent" and "Moonchild" to the funky "Jacknife Beat" (apparently Rory's tribue to Southern rockers Little Feat) and absolutely classic "Barley and Grape Rag," probably one of the funniest drinking songs ever! The absolutely piledriving "Rue the Day" is also a great, previously unreleased bonus track. Rory would subsequently break up this incarnation of his backing band and slim back down to a power trio for his next album, but to my mind Lou Martin's piano really gave Rory's guitar a lot of room to shine.
One of the best albums you've never heard of.......2005-11-30
I lived in ignorance of Rory Gallagher for a long time until I read an article on him in one of last summer's issues of GUITAR PLAYER magazine. He sounded like someone I liked so I searched up and down until I found this album. I can't say I was disappointed!
It's a shame that Rory never caught on in the US like he did in Europe because this is a damn fine album. With production from Deep Purple/Rainbow bassist Roger Glover and backing from Rory's seasoned touring band, Rory made an album that should've made him a star in America.
This is quite a diverse album. "Country Mile" and "Secret Agent" are uptempo rockers while "Do You Read Me?" and "Jacknife Beat" rock at slower beats. The title cut is blues with a jazz edge. "Moonchild" is a minor key rocker in the vein of Glover's bandmate Ritchie Blackmore. "I'll Admit You're Gone" and "Edge in Blue" are gorgeous, melodic ballads and the album ends with the acoustic rave-up "Barley and Grape Rag." The two bonus cuts are good, but seem to interrupt the perfect end "Barley and Grape Rag" provides.
I'm thankful I read the GUITAR PLAYER article and picked up this album. Rory was an amazing guitarist, writer, and singer. If you've never heard his music, give this CD a spin. For those of us who have heard Rory Gallagher, pass it on...
It doesn't get any better than this.......2003-11-06
Rory Gallagher's "Calling Card" was never a huge commercial success and it will probably never make a top 100 albums list, but those who are lucky enough to know Rory's work are aware that this is perhaps the greatest album ever recorded.
First off, I can't overemphasize the incredible musicianship this album offers. Rory Gallagher was one of the most amazing guitar players who ever lived. Give him shred, blues, jazz, folk, rockabilly, he could play it and any given subgenre flawlessly. Also, he was a tasteful player. No "excess" noodling and repetitive A minor runs here. "Calling Card" also features the stunning Lou Martin on piano, Gerry McAvory on bass (great chemistry between he and Rory) and the enormously talented Rod de'Arth on drums.
There's no shortage of good rockin' tunes on "Calling Card". Most notably, "Country Mile", "Jackknife Beat", and the almost Deep Purple-esque "Moonchild".
But there's something for everybody, including the jazz/blues fusion title track, the melancholy acoustic number "I'll Admit You're Gone", the folk jam "Barley and Grape Rag", and arguably the best track, "Edged In Blue" (which might have been a hit for Rory had he decided to release singles).
I urge anybody to give "Calling Card" a listen. Without a doubt, you'll be hooked
A MUCH UNDER-RECOGNIZED BLUES MASTER.......2002-10-10
Calling Card is my first Rory Gallagher album I ever bought. It won't be my last(in fact I now plan to get them all).
This man needs much more recognition for the wonderful contribution he made to the blues. Calling Card is such a maginificent album because it showcases Gallagher's blues history, and shows where he was headed with his jazz influences.I love all the tracks, but in particular I love the swing of 'Calling Card', the new directions taken with 'Moonchild', and the soul-driven 'Edged in Blue. I could go on and on about the other tracks, but you HAVE to hear this man for yourself.
Make no mistake though, Gallagher is the stuff blues is made of through and through, and I can only hope that more people become exposed to this wonderful artist.

Blue Collar Cool.......2001-08-30
Simply another stellar effort from Rory Gallagher, who, along with Charlie Whitney of Family and Streetwalkers, remain two of the most unappreciated guitarists from before the days when rock and roll was a budget-line item for multinational corporations. Rory just has so much soul and emotion in his playing and singing, and there is a certain raw edge to his searing guitar work that will have you reaching to turn up the volume at once.
Rory Gallagher seems a true blue-collar musician: his music is lean, muscular, and at times urgent. Listen to the angst of Secret Agent or the power in Do You Read Me. Calling Card is a classy acknowledgment that the blues can't bested. The Barley and Grape Rag reframes the derelict's lamentable goal of having to get wasted but makes the whole thing sound like such fun you want to go along.
Blues at Its Best.......2000-05-06
Few guitarists have been as underappreciated by the public as this one (with the possible exception of Roy Buchanan). This CD smokes. Rory not only shows why he is one of the industries best bluesmen, but also demonstrates his ability to rock. This is by far his best recording. The tracks on this CD are highly listenable for any rock affeciando as well as the blues lover. From the simplicity of Barley and Grape Rag to the complexity of Moonchild through the almost Jazz-influenced Jacknife Beat, Rory shows an incredibly complex range of sounds. This is one of the top twenty rock or blues recordings of all time. If you make one purchase of a Rory Gallagher recording - this should be the one. And if you become a fan - buy Top Priority as your second choice. You won't be disappointed
a real moonchild.......1999-06-14
i must admit that rory is one of my favorite guitarists.he and roger glover, who participated in the production of the album, gave it an incredible sound that was able to shake each one of your bones.each track is great but i think that moonchild, calling card and secret agent should get the more credit.finally,i would like to ask whether there are tracks of rory that have not been released.thanks.
Excellent studio album from a guitar master........1998-07-07
For one track alone, "Moonchild", this is a must have album for any Rory fan or any fan of blues/rock guitar maestros. There is an excitement and enthusiasm to Rory's playing that could only ever be properly experienced live (See "Irish Tour" and "Live In Europe") however, his studio albums provide the opportunity to experience his superb style and technique. The opening riff of "Moonchild" used to send a thrill through the crowd whenever he hit the opening chords. I saw Rory live many times, in fact, never missed a show if we were both in town at the same time and there was no-one quite like him. A true blues man who never really deviated from that path, his studio recordings are crisp and clean and always fresh. Check out "Against The Grain", "Tatoo'd Lady" and "Blueprint" as well as the two live albums named above. His later live album "Stage Struck" has a rockier feel to it which reflects his playing at that time although he returned to a more blues feel in the years before he, prematurely, died.

Truly wonderful. I enjoyed every minute........1999-07-04
A wonderful collection of works that appeals to a wide audience. Of particular interest to me was "Winter Overture" by Eddie Phoon. If this is only the beginning for Mr. Phoon, I eagerly await his future works.
Highly enjoyable.......1999-06-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this set of 11 pieces of modern classical music. All of the music is accessible to the unsophisticated ear. The people who put the CD together did a wonderful "bookending"-job by putting the two best pieces first and last. Mr. Phoon's Winter Ouverture made me think of Holst's Planets and Williams's Star Wars music. Mr. Biggs's Pastiche is undiluted fun in trying to discover all the themes and composers on which his work is based. Very highly recommended CD.

MMC ORCHESTRAL MINIATURES - VOLUME IV
A Listener's Review
This remarkable CD is a sampler - a buffet, if you will - of 11 works by modern American composers of classical music. It shows that modern American "classical" creation is not only alive and well, but vigorous. Many of the composers are still young and will no doubt be able to contribute yet more to the musical literature. It's fun to listen to, the pieces are all fairly brief, and the variety is outstanding. This CD would make an excellent gift for anyone who enjoys classical music and is not afraid of a little harmonic and rhythmic spice. It's also a good CD to listen to in your car.
The CD starts out with what in my opinion is the most enjoyable piece, Eddie Phoon's "Winter Overture." Despite its title it conveys considerable warmth, and above all, a boundless energy. It opens with its first theme, an epic fanfare. The flute leads over a bridge to the second theme, a rising sequence in the high violins. With sudden harsh dissonances and energetic rhythmic patterns the two themes are played against each other, with wide tonal ranges from deep bass to piccolo. Every return has unexpected and delightful variations; the brass is satisfyingly full, and the short piece ends with a no-nonsense ending. This is one track I set on "repeat."
This is not to minimize the exciting musical variety in the other works. Paul Joslin's "Hiroshima Idyll" briefly touches on Hiroshima before and after the bombing, with wistful evocations and modern-harmony variations on oriental themes. Peter Sacco's "Meditation #1" is more conventional; its occasional introspective dissonances have something for every instrument. In Robert Ehle's "Forests of the Night" different instruments repeat the initial bassoon arpeggio defining the main minor tonality throughout the piece, against winding themes, tying it together nicely.
In Larry Barnes' "Morning Gigue" the soprano sax introduces an off-meter theme. Many instruments offer virtuoso variations of the main theme, a miniature Concerto for Orchestra. Despite frequent changes of meter, the themes repeat often enough so the listener can track the progressions.
Mona Lyn Reese is the only woman composer on this CD, a sign of the paucity of women composers despite the excellent works of some of them. Her "Prince" joins jazz and classical forms; it quickly develops a very complex rhythmic pattern with elements of classical jazz, with counterpoint reminiscent of Dixieland. Its incandescent rhythmic complexity exudes energy.
Andy Teirstein's "Maramures" (part of his viola concerto) also begins with an energetic complex rhythm and an unusual melodic line, which the program notes trace to themes heard in Carpathia. This part of the world has been a rich source for thematic and rhythmic material (Bartok, Enesco, Janacek).
Steven Winteregg's "TGV" (France's Train à Grande Vitesse, high-speed train) is a delightful jazzy musical description of a train ride. Trains make good subjects and have inspired other composers (Honegger, Villa-Lobos). Raymond Lindsay's "Calling Card from Charlottesville" is a musical tour through Virginia. The program music sometimes sounds as if it may have been written for a movie.
Matthew MacTavish's "Willows Weeping in a Mist" uses a melancholy descending pattern, with overlays added progressively, to portray the vague indistinctness of a mist. It progresses to an unexpected major-third ending.
The last track, John Biggs' "Pastiche," is, as the name implies, a quilt of brief snatches of well-known classical themes, some overlaid. It's a classical "Name That Tune." It would be an excellent party quiz for people who think they know their classics! The astute listener should recognize works even from some characteristic 3-note bits. Unusual overlays include Prokofiev's "Love for Three Oranges" atop Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. This track is lots of fun and it is also good music in the pastiche style. It's a great choice for last-track: it leaves the listener in a good mood, at least this listener. This CD is well worth the price, and I recommend it without reservation.

Great Modern Classical CD!.......1999-04-17
The opening track by composer Ediie Phoon is the best (I can see why it's the first track of the CD)! His composition style shows fresh ideas of eraly American revival still exists in modern classical writing these days.
Mona Lyn Resse's composition is really interesting, encompassing Hip-Hop and R&B styles in her writing. Who says Classical music isn't intersting these days?
