When David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash created this pop super trio in 1968 after their splits from the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies, respectively, it would have been a pipedream that a hits package released 37 years later would sound as eternal and essential as this one. The 19 songs straddle the four-album, landscape-altered timeframe between 1969's post-Woodstock debut Crosby, Stills & Nash and 1982's Daylight Again, which helped inaugurate the MTV era. Unbalanced sequencing--which randomly bounces 12 years ahead and five years back--is rescued by the superb harmonies, unique songwriting and divergent personalities of the three members. With politics and culture always at the forefront, Stills bookends the band's trademark canon with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Southern Cross," Nash incorporates Eastern influences to "Marrakesh Express" and folk timber to "Just a Song Before I Go" and "Teach Your Children," and the ever-capricious Crosby leads the way lyrically with the lingering "Delta" to the Robert Kennedy tribute "Long Time Gone." Sure, the collection is missing any songs by ("Ohio") or contributions from ("Woodstock") the fourth name on the marquee (Neil Young). Here's hoping that's for another Greatest Hits. --Scott Holter

Album Description

One of the most enduring musical partnerships of our time, Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) are beloved worldwide for their peerless three-part harmonies, inspired songwriting, and brilliant musicianship. Rightfully claiming a singular place among the artistically and culturally influential acts of the original Woodstock era, CSN has been called "the voice of an entire generation."

America was lucky these three individuals David Crosby of the Byrds, Grahm Nash of the Hollies and Steven Stills formerly of Buffalo Springfield and originally wanted to be one of the monkees crossed paths. If they had not we would not have these great folk compostions to listen to.

1 out of 5 stars credit where credit is due.......2007-03-08

this is not a review of this compilation, but please note, CSNY fans, that while their version of "Woodstock" may be the more familiar one, the song was written by Joni Mitchell. Listen to her own (comletely different) performance of it on her "Ladies of the Canyon" (1970) album.

2 out of 5 stars Love the songs, hate the static!.......2007-01-12

My husband and I are very disappointed in this CD. It sounds like it was recorded from someone's old scratched LP. My old CSN LPs sound better than this.

4 out of 5 stars harmony defined.......2006-12-26

As though from some cobwebbed corner of your memory, these Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young tunes emerge as an instantly recognizable memory. The harmonies could belong to no other than this inimitable sixties and seventies band, acoustical as it gets, tightly harmonic as any folk or Rock & Roll voices could possibly become intertwined.

This compilation is a bit of a disordered mosaic, but who cares? CSN&Y are at their best with the haunting sounds of 'Helplessly Hoping':

'Wordlessly watching he waits by the window
And wonders
At the empty place inside

Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams he worries
Did he hear a good-bye, or even
Hello'

Assonance helps itself to tonalities that no other quartet of male human beings could replicate.

It is the spareness of this music that strikes one in retrospect. Ornamentation is absent. They don't do all that they could with their voices. They simply do enough to engage the soul and, of course, the memory.

'Love isn't lying, it's
Loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on
Hello'

One of CSN&Y's most winsome tunes is the odd tale of happiness that makes it into the canonical memory, an instrument much more receptive to angst, loss, and woe. But who can forget:

'I'll light the fire
You place the flowers in the vase
That you bought today

Staring at the fire
For hours and hours
While I listen to you
Play your love songs
All night long for me
Only for me ...

Our house is a very, very fine house
With two cats in the yard
Life used to be so hard
Now everything is easy
'Cause of you'

These guys must have known a tune like this couldn't possibly sell, would instantly be dismissed as musical cotton candy, and would leave their reputation as a thoughtful band besmirched.

Yet they released it anyway, and it went and became permanently hummable.

Quite the contrary the enigmatic fight-or-flight story sketched out in 'Southern Cross'. It was standing in South Africa's Krüger Park, looking up at the Southern Cross (for the first time) that brought me back 'round to the iTunes Music Store, to downloading this album, and now to the re-hearing of these almost-eschatological, almost dissolute words:

'... But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away.

Think about how many times I have fallen.
Spirits are using me; larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
looking' for that woman-girl
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will ...

So we cheated and we lied and we tested.
And we never faijled to fail; it was the easiest thing to do.
You will survive being bested.
Somebody fine will come along
Make me forget about loving you
In the Southern Cross.'

Is this prediction or wish, certainty or the desperation of a jilted lover hoping he won't forever live with this ache? CSN&Y aren't telling.

If the band was willing to risk whimsiness, they also took a chance on the side of sentimentalism, with equally good results. Witness the quintessentially benign 'Teach Your Children':

'Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of tender years,
Can't know
The fears your elders grew by,
And so please help them
With your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.

Teach your parents well
Their children's hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked
The one you'll know by.'

One of the greatest uses of the tenor range by CSN&Y is undoubtedly 'Just a Song Before I Go', arguably their best song:

'Just a song before I go,
To whom it may concern ...

She helped me with my suitcase,
She stands before my eyes.

Driving me to the airport
And to the friendly skies.

Going through security
I held her for so long.
She finally looked at me in love,
And she was gone.'

Who knew where this song was going? Tragedy or triumphant? Love or irreversible separation?

Once again, CSN&Y are at their best when at their most enigmatic. The song ends:

'Just a song before I go,
A lesson to be learned.
Travelling twice the speed of sound
It's easy to get burned.'

What happened? Silence, then a new track.

Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young were that rare phenomenon: an assemblage of great voices that together created a unique sound. I don't mean 'unique' as in 'cool', but in its proper sense : 'one of a kind'. One can venture influences upon CSN&Y from their foreground and one can, in retrospect, point to a number of artists who have picked up one or two of their characteristics. But there has been no CSN&Y tradition and - heaven be thanked - no recorded CSN&Y Impersonator conventions.

One has to look far afield to find a band that has imbibed their spirit: to Matchbox Twenty, for example. Admittedly, the sound is altogether different. How could it be otherwise, given the musical water that has passed under the bridge between these two fine acts?

Yet the poignance, the memory, the longing, and the predilection for harmony over, say, an imitable voice like the Stone's Jagger is a thin line that might run from CSN&Y to MT without doing violence to the integrity of either one.

Listen to them back-to-back and see whether you agree. For that, you'll need to pick up CSN (and Young's) Greatest Hits. That'll be a smart decision on its own.

although i thought i was a fan of this group, and i do like their work, i have to say that this album is poorly edited. you must admit that all their hits have a simalar sound what with the accoustic guitars and the effete voices and sound. each song is sung with the same or similar tempo. after a while they sound the same and got on my nerves. it is unlistenable in a single playing

Less than a year after the release of CSN's groundbreaking debut, the group returned with Stephen Stills's former Buffalo Springfield cohort/rival Neil Young augmenting the threesome. The result is a less concentrated but more kinetic creation; Young swims through the celestial harmonies of rock's best barbershop trio like a fly in consommé. While somewhat dated ("Almost Cut My Hair"? Wait a while, David, it'll fall out), Deju Vu is teeming with early '70s FM staples, including "Helpless," "Teach Your Children," and "Our House." --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu........ Have I written this before?????????.......2007-06-04

O.K. So I embedded myself into the photo on the cover. O.K. So I got Chance (an indian guide in a former life) to help me find out where I was at. And, to my surprise, it was 1870 and I was in a hilly area of Wyoming. Wy, you may ask? But, in a larger sense, that is the very question we should ask C,S,N & Y. If we all have lived before -then wy? For mere monetary compensation your knowledgable Seer will answer you. If not, you have to suffer through this review. :)
I liken this group to a band of ex-patriot renegades (see cover) who, for whatever what reason, saw fit to escape former situations to create a new creative band. How or why they got together is anyone's guess. But it works in a more than substantial way and the vocals and music are more than a snug fit like pieces of a puzzle.
The songs here have a tendency to embed themselves into self-serving memory for some reason. Perhaps it's the artists; perhaps it's the songs, perhaps it's the harmonies, perhaps it's the production. Then again, maybe, perhaps it's everything.
Even in the slower and more somber tunes, there is something here that awakens you - leads you on to some type of discovery. Whether it be inner or outer is your own choice. But realization of yourself and your world is a never ending process. Maybe we would all be better in Wyoming at a simpler, less complicated time. But, here we are. And we have no choice except to learn and evolve - or else, in the next life, this one will be the Deja Vu.
We begin with "Carry On" which borrows lyrics from Still's "Questions" that was on the last Buffalo Springfield album. On this he expands into a galloped beat with pronounced ensemble singing. Also a change in tempo. In a sense, the message is pronounced (as later in the Joni Mitchell song "Woodstock") that life is for learning. A call to carry on and learn.
The seemingly simple country slide guitar ode of Nash's "Teach Your Children" carries with it the underlying motif of understanding by shifting your perspective. In this case, older and younger generations. It's easy to discount others in which there is no reward. Better yet to take the effort to truly "see". The blessings are well worth the chance.
Crosby's "Almost Cut My Hair" with it's lazy walk riff poses questions within the self. Justifying inner decisions as opposed to whatever out there wants to decide for you. An amazing stream-of-conciousness tune. Or maybe drugs. With Crosby it's always a flip of the coin. What is next is one of the most glorious tunes on the album. "Helpless" conveys the awe and magnitude of the Canadian countryside that Neil knows. Nature in itself is a force beyond human comprhension or control, and in this we are all helpless.
"Woodstock" rocks righteously. And it is a call of a generation. It is also a song of moving forward with a clensing. We have all fallen- but we are golden and have to get ourselves back to the garden. Again- a moving on.
"Deja Vu", with Crosby's outerworldly guitar chords and ethereal meters beckon further examination of the world. "Do you know? Don't you wonder". The construction on this song never ceases to amaze your favorite Seer. Maybe I could have written this in a former life. O.K. - I won't go there.
"Our House" is Nash's ode to domestic bliss. Nothing exceptional but oh so addictive. That tune is just so incredibly pleasant. This must be what the afterworld is like! "4 + 20" finds Still's still aching about a lost love. Simple but effective acoustic guitar on this. Still, the dismay and depression of heartache is one of the most deeply confessional tunes I've heard. The ways of the world are sometimes wicked and cruel. Sometimes we create those ways.
Again, Neil Young shines bright with the trilogy of "Country Girl". Amazing, lush, and inventive changes in structure. This could not have been an easy tune to pull off. But, with musicians this talented anything is possible. "Too late to keep the change, too late to pay". Neil always throws these dilemmas in his tunes (see my review on "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere). Neil is consummate conveyor of enigmas within the soul. His own as well as others. Brilliant.
"Everybody I Love You" closes out this rock classic. A call to open up and let love through - even to one's self. Your "heart is an anchor" and "you expect for me to love you when you hate yourself my friend". With C,S,N & Y somehow, underneath it all, is a call to freedom and movement towards the dawn- the dawn of realization.
Well - that's it. I made you suffer through another review. Did you like it or did you need novacaine? I'm leaving Wyoming now. Being pelted with pinecones is not Metamorpho's cup of tea. No.
If you like wonderous harmonies, creative effort, and a classic from a magical bygone age - this is definitely a treat and essential to any rock collection.

A star in a bar --- your Metamorpho

4 out of 5 stars Déjà Déjà Vu.......2007-05-14

I wore this out on vinyl, so had to have it on CD! These four guys are just splendid together, and the result is greater than the sum of its parts! A classic.

5 out of 5 stars Living in the past.......2007-05-08

There are two "must haves" for me as a C.S.N.&Y. fan: this and Suite Judy Blue Eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Shows What We've Lost and What They've Lost.......2007-04-26

When I listen to Deja Vu these days, I'm surprisingly not reminded of the hippie movement or drug-induced paranoia or political activism, although you could say CSN and sometimes Y have really become posterchildren for this tumultous time in our history. Instead, I'm still swept away by the aural beauty of the jangling acoustic guitars, the richness of the songs, the perfect harmonies, the passionate performances. I'm still mesmerized by Stills' tasty guitar licks which run through "Carry On" and "Deju Vu" and the emotional choke in his voice on 4 + 20's final verse. I love Jerry Garcia's pedal steel guitar that cries all the way through Nash's "Teach Your Children" and the experience listening to "Almost Cut My Hair," which sounds as if the band is playing in your living room with their amps cranked. I still get an adrenalin rush when I hear Stills belting out "Woodstock," which for me is one of the most powerful vocal performances in all of rock. And I like the eccentric Young's slow-as-molasses but elegant "Helpless." It reminds me of a time when music was not meant to be background noise, or to be listened to while you read or studied, or walked between classes at the university. It was a time when you put the LP on your turntable and sprawled in a comfortable chair or sat on the floor and let the music take you completely away. Or maybe you got together with friends and sat around just listening to new releases like Deja Vu, reading every word in the liner notes on the jacket. This is what I think we've lost.

Deja Vu also shows what CSN (and sometimes Y) ultimately have lost. Sadly, after this pinnacle of achievement, except for occasional flourishes of good songwriting and performance, Crosby, Stills, & Nash would rarely recapture the beauty of this album or its predecessor. The exception has of course been Young, who somehow has managed to keep it all together through the years. And except for Stills' magnificent opus, Manassas (1), and C&N's Wind On the Water, I realize just how much drug addiction and delusions of grandeur have drained the talent from these once brilliant artists. Fortunately, we still have the time capsules created by Buffalo Springfield, CSN, Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, The Stones, and The Beatles to transport us back to the musical renaissance of 1967--1972.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Portrait of a Generation.......2007-04-07

Back when I was in high school, Deja Vu was one of the most popular albums with kids who were of a counter-culture bent. But it was also an album, due to the presence of the Graham Nash contributions Our House and Teach Your Children, that kids could play loudly at home without parents shouting at them to "turn that g#*d*#* noise down!". While the band's eponymous debut (sans Neil Young) brought them fame and fortune, it was Deja Vu that had such broad appeal that it became the musical portrait of a generation.
Admittedly, my vinyl copy of Deja Vu had been gathering dust for years as I have so much other music I had nearly forgotten CSNY. But recently, I saw this on sale at a bargain price in Costco and snapped it up after remembering how much I used to enjoy it as a kid. Well, I tell you, one listen brings the old days back to life. The industry reviewer says that songs like Almost Cut My Hair are dated, but I say they still sound as good today as when I first heard them.
Though the entire album is highly enjoyable, my favorites are: the stirring Carry On, the country-rock Teach Your Children, the anthemic Almost Cut My Hair, the evocative Our House, the plaintive 4 + 20, and the glorious Country Girl. Everytime I put this on, visions of old times and places flash though my mind.
Note that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and some other organization have chosen Deja Vu as one of 200 albums that should be in everyone's collection. I've seen that list and my stomach churns as I read it. But I was pleased to note that the compilers got roughly one out of ten right and this album is definitely one of those few. Obviously, if you are checking this CD out on the listings here you must have some familiarity with it. So if you have not gotten this remastered version of Deja Vu yet, the time to do so is now. You'll never be sorry you did.

As much as any record, CSN's 1969 debut ushered in the early '70s singer-songwriter boom. Yes, this was a group, but it was one made up of three coequal composer/vocalists, each with a heady resume--Crosby an ex- Byrd, Stills in Buffalo Springfield, and Nash a former member of the Hollies. Each supplied distinctive material and contributed to CSN's trademark harmonies. The addition of Neil Young made the supergroup an edgier outfit. There's a purity to the original trio recording, however, that would never be recaptured. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars THE TRUE SPIRIT OF ROCK N' ROLL AND WOODSTOCK 1969........2007-04-14

I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece self-titled debut album entitled "CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands. I give you one of America's and England's pride and joy's, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH. "CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH" was originally released in 1969 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Atlantic Records label. This legendary album saw its first day of release on Compact disc in the late 80's. I purchased this legendary album on Compact Disc in the Gold Standard collector's edition which delivers the best ultimate digital remastered sound possible. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for delivering some of Rock's most sacred anthem songs. This legendary band would also be responsible for writing some of the most memorable anthem songs defining the true spirit of the very first Woodstock Festival held in 1969. The band members were no strangers to Rock n' Roll. David Crosby would formally be from the band THE BYRDS, Stephen Stills would formally be from the band BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD and the British musician Graham Nash would formally be from the band THE HOLLIES. Put these three key elements together and you have pure genius. When these three music giants got together and went into the recording studio and laid down the tracks for this legendary album, the band would record something very special. After a certain period of time, the band would evolve from the recording studio with this completed album and hand it into Atlantic Records. The result would be the self-titled debut album by CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH. In my opinion, "CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH" is one of the greatest albums as well as acoustic albums ever recorded. It is also my opinion that this legendary self-titled debut album would be a true testament of three extremely talented young masterminds and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time for me to let the music of CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking. This legendary self-titled debut album begins with the forever famous CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH trademark acoustic masterpiece song "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," the incredible harmonizing "Marrakesh Express," the slow and mysterious acoustic number "Guinnevere," the slow and beautifully harmonized song "You Don't Have To Cry," the breathtaking Rocker "Pre-Road Downs," the slow and fantastic Rocker "Wooden Ships," the slow and beautiful acoustic song "Lady Of The Island," the slow and beautiful harmonizing number "Helplessly Hoping," the slow blistering harmonizing Rocker "Long Time Gone" and the slow beautiful uplifting song "49 Bye-Byes." May I also add that CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH delivered some of the greatest acoustic guitar sounds ever. The three also contributed some of the greatest harmonizing sounds in Rock history.

Overall, this is one great legendary album worth seeking further research into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH fan or a devout music collector. As for the curious newcomers or new beginner's that are not familiar with the sound and music of CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH, what better way to begin their CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH collection by purchasing this band's first album.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece self-titled debut album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary masterpiece album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great album that no hardcore music fan or a devout music collector would want to be without. Buy this album, you'll be glad that you did. You can purchase all of CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH'S albums through Amazon com or Borders.

In closing, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH would be on top of the world following the release of their self-titled debut album. CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH would also release many more great albums to highly critical acclaim. However, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH would also have their fair share of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their long career. Depite all of their tribulations, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH will forever leave their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you David, Stephen and Graham. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH FOREVER. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Battle of the bands makes for fine music .......2007-04-10

Each member of Crosby, Stills and Nash had an impressive resume before assembling in the living room of Joni Mitchell, or Cass Elliot, depending on which member you ask. Crosby had been the " Bad Byrd", Stills was the hub of Buffalo Springfield, and Nash headlined The Hollies. Each talent was restless and in search of support for their respective artistic visions. Never has a blending of styles, as well as vocal harmonies, been so compatible.

CSN released their debut in the spring of 1969, just in time to fly up the charts before Woodstock. One of the special features about this recording is the stamp each artist places on his work, while allowing the other two to join in for a unique sum that's more than it's parts. Taken apart these men are talented, but something is missing after hearing them together.

Crosby is the rebel, Stills the perfectionist and Nash the heartbeat. "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", a classic rock staple/tribute to Judy Collins, opens the album. Stills makes it his by trailing off into speaking Spanish at the end, leaving Crosby and Nash to provide the pretty melodies. Graham Nash's " Marrakesh Express" is a hold-over from his days in The Hollies, but fits in perfectly here. It rolls along like a train, giving the listener a sense of being high on travel and in love.

Crosby gets in a word with " Guinevere", a beautiful ballad written as a composite of Joni and another girlfriend. One of the greatest compliments a song can receive is providing inspiration for another great song; "Wooden Ships" gave Jackson Browne the desire to respond in his superior work " For Everyman". I must admit that " Wooden Ships" sounded like a song dedicated to Holocaust survivors to me when I first heard it, and in some ways I found it more poignant in that vein than it's real meaning, thoughts from refugees in a nuclear stand-off.

" Lady of the Island" is another highlight; wouldn't all ladies like to have a Graham Nash in her life? " Helplessly Hoping" is another timeless classic. In fact, not a one of these songs begs to be removed. They all come together to make a very satisfying experience, especially on a summer day. This is a fantastic summer album.

5 out of 5 stars A classic!.......2007-03-31

This album is a classic and was revolutionary when it was first released in 1969. It went to number 6 on the Billboard album chart in the US and produced two hit singles: Marrakesh Express and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. But every song on the album received at least some airplay on the "hip" FM stations that played album cuts, and many of them are still staples of classic rock stations to day.

While this was a great release, it has been superceded by a newer edition of the CD with bonus tracks. I would recommend that you pass on this edition and pick-up the newer edition with the bonus material.

5 out of 5 stars Storytelling.......2007-03-11

Listen to this CD and you're right back in your Volkswagen headed for Woodstock. The lyrics are not only amazing, they are meaningful, and, I can't even believe I remember every single word considering the times and possibly ingested hallucinogenics. Take me back anytime. It was so free-spirited and meaningful, as is this music.

This is one of those albums where you'll want to cherry-pick favorites. Recorded live when the supergroup was at its commercial zenith, it's sloppy in spots where precision is called for. And the hyperbolic counterculture rants sound a bit silly these days (Bellows Stills: "Jesus Christ was the first nonviolent revolutionary! Ah, dig it, dig it!"). On the other hand, the electric jams are enlivened by some charged guitar skirmishes between Stills and Young. Those who owned the original 2-record set will be pleased by the additional Graham Nash song ("King Midas in Reverse") and Young's acoustic "The Loner"/"Cinnamon Girl"/"Down by the River" medley. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Music & Lyrics with a Message........2007-06-01

This eclectic group of misicians formed a band CSN&Y, and told the story's of America growing up in the 60's and 70'. It was a difficult time for this country. But David Crosby, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young wrote about love & hate, the Vietnam War, the killings at Kent St., political corruption, the blight of the black community, etc. They wrote about their lives & experiences. They wrote about what mattered most. To this day, "4 Way Street" is my favorite piece of music. They wrote the songs that our children, and grand children will listen to, and ask, "What did that mean daddy? What happened at Kent State mommy? Why did we hate black people? Who was this man named Martin? This collection of song & stories is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Good live album, but help me please with one question ...........2007-05-11

Did this 30-second version of "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" appear on the original vinly LP version back in 1971? Or is it just like that on this CD version?
Thanks.

4 out of 5 stars Strong, raw performances.......2007-04-03

This album was a big hit in the US when it was released in 1971, climbing all the way to number 1 on the Billboard album chart. The performances are raw but effective. I especially like the last part of the album, when they go "electric." Their extended, blistering performance of "Carry On" is alone worth the price of the album!

5 out of 5 stars I Bought 4 Way Street 3-Times!.......2007-03-09

I bought 4 Way Street as an album when it was originally released. I bought it again when it was released as a CD. Then when my daughter became a teenager she "borrowed" it from me and it is now living with her in her apartment. I could not live without it so I have once again purchased 4 Way Street. Why...? Because of the haunting beauty of Find The Cost Of Freedom, the exhilaration of Love The One Your With, the melancholy of Cowgirl In The Sand and the hope of Carry On. Almost every song is a gem and to hear these four artists together is an opportunity not to be missed.

It's tempting to follow the post-Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young career of Neil Young and underestimate this early band as a lighter, commercial diversion. But their fourth album, a concise retrospective of highlights, remains a sweeping '60s document, full of pastoral optimism and the virtues of (even today) spectacular-sounding harmonies. These songs continue to dominate AOR radio, and the best--the searing "Ohio" (written after the Kent State massacre), the utopian "Woodstock," and the ominous, graceful "Wooden Ships," the band's best performance--have an artful, mystical sweetness. --Roy Francis Kasten

4 out of 5 stars Great, but time for an update!.......2007-04-03

This was a great album when it was released in 1974. However, this CD is simply a song-for-song reissue of the vinyl album. There is plenty of room on this CD for additional songs. It is time to either update this release with bonus tracks, or come out with an all new CSNY greatest hits release (similar to what they did for CSN).

4 out of 5 stars An overview of their 2 most popular albums plus 2 singles.......2007-03-14

Considering that the bulk of this collection comes mainly from Crosby Stills and Nash's debut and the CSN&Young album Deja Vu, this is a good overview of their 2 most popular albums. Though all the songs are great, I don't consider it all you need to hear from CSNY. After all, they'd have other projects like solo albums from all four, side projects (Mannassas and Crosby&Nash) and other albums and hits beyond this. But if you've never heard their music, this collection should be enough to get you interested in CSNY (besides, this was originally released in 1974 and deals exclusively with their 1969-71 era). The cover features some pretty artwork by Joni Mitchell, who was a friend to the band. From their debut, you get Crosby's placid "Guinevere," one of the most creative story-songs "Wooden Ships" co-written and sung by Crosby and Stills (Paul Kantner also helped to write it, although he didn't get credit until years later), Stills' winsome "Helplessly Hoping" and the quintessential epic "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," which was written for Judy Collins, whom Stills dated. Inclusion of Nash's "Marrakesh Express" would've been appropriate, but back when this was released, there may have been the issue of time restraint (most LP records were usually no longer than 40 minutes). From Deja Vu, you get the title track (composed by Crosby) which sounds like a medley in that it starts out bright and slows down, Nash's "Teach Your Children" (a very positive message about parents and children getting along with each other) and "Our House" (which described a house Nash shared in Laurel Canyon with Joni Mitchell), Stills' take on Mitchell's "Woodstock" (it's a shame "Carry On" wasn't included but again, it's probably a question of time restraints) and Young's introspective "Helpless." In addition, you get Young's powerful "Ohio" (written about a protest which took place at Kent State University and ended in tragedy) and Stills' "Find the Cost of Freedom" which features some fine harmony between the four. That's what you get on So Far (which probably means "our greatest hits... so far"). If you like this and want more, check out the box set.

5 out of 5 stars West Coast Dreamin'.......2007-03-08

If ever you want to get away from it all on the school run and imagine you're living high in the LA canyons hanging out with joni and her cool buddies writing their songs just for you; then this is the album to play as you drop your kids off. Great harmonies from the boys and distinctive vocals from Neil Young. Cover art work by Joni Mitchell as a bonus. A classic of its time.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with classics.......2007-02-26

This CSNY album is packed with classics that ring great and true even all these years later.

Wooden Ships shows great musicianship. Perhaps the broader meaning is lost in the 60s, but it is still great to listen to.

Teach Your Children is filled with 60s moralizing - or is it a modern commentatry that No Child Left Behind isn't enough?

Ohio, a song of the Kent State massacre, shares an anti-authority and anti-big government message that has been gaining steam in recent years.

Woodstock, about the iconic festival they attended (and ironically written by Joni Mitchell who didn't attend) could also be seen as surviving in modern times. At least as long as the reunion shows keep going every five years there.

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, one of their most famous anthems, also survives the test of time.

What a great album - enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars So Far-- so GOOD.......2007-02-21

CSNY's SO FAR is a "Best Of" collection in the truest sense-- every track here is a highlight of the album it was originally on (there were 3 in total). From the mystical "Deja Vu" to the Top 40 hit "Our House" to their magnus opus "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and everything in between, SO FAR is simply SO GOOD! With no filler or throwaways to be found on it, this one is all you'll ever really need from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Essential to all 1970-era rock and pop collections. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Nice comeback!.......2007-04-03

This was the first in a long line of "comeback" albums for Crosby, Stills, & Nash, and in my opinion is the best of their latter releases. This album was a big hit in the US when it was released in 1977, climbing to number 2 on the Billboard album chart. It produced CSN's first top ten single "Just A Song Before I Go" and minor follow-up hit "Fair Game." Though in my opinion the best song on the album is "Dark Star", why it wasn't released as a single is a mystery to me! A very strong album!

3 out of 5 stars A song in time.......2007-03-24

Some review the sound quality of an album. Of far more importance to me is the time and culture it conjures. For me, I was sailing again in the intricacies of their harmony and poetry, young and free, again. Pure rush!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful masterpiece from CSN.......2007-02-07

Back when "CSN" was originally released in June of 1977, it was something of a long-awaited reunion. Crosby, Stills & Nash's debut LP came out in 1969, and they added Neil Young to the mix for 1970's "Deja Vu" and 1971's double live album "4 Way Street", but neither CSN or CSNY were able to get it together for another album until here.

Of course, the guys were hardly idle in the meantime. CSNY did tour in 1974. Stephen Stills seems to have barely slept, making brilliant music as a solo artist in addition to putting together the band Manassas for live concerts and two albums; plus, he teamed up with Neil for the 1976 Stills-Young album "Long May You Run". David Crosby & Graham Nash continued to record and tour together, making fantastic music as a duo.

So, although "CSN" was only the second bonafide Crosby, Stills & Nash album up to this point, there was no doubt at all of the brilliance of each individual member. And this album, deservedly a huge hit, just proves it even further.

The album opener "Shadow Captain" has a suitably epic feel with spellbinding harmonies. "Anything At All" has Crosby's characteristic dreamy resignation to it, and in typical Crosby fashion, it really gets under your skin and moves you. The supremely tender "In My Dreams" is wonderful, with a brilliantly-realized punchy coda that Crosby claims was "a gift from Graham".

Speaking of Graham, he wrote the album's big hit with the short-and-sweet "Just A Song Before I Go" (which does feature some laughably aimless soloing from Stephen, as if he picked up the electric and did it all in one take having never heard the song before). Graham also offers the very pretty and yearning "Carried Away"; the eerily reflective "Cold Rain"; and a brilliant epic of his own with "Cathedral", a cautionary tale about the perils of organized religion.

Stills is consistently at his best here, which is saying a lot. "See The Changes" had been previously recorded in a CSNY version which would later appear on the CSN box set, but the version here is easily superior and more fully-realized. "Fair Game" is a deviously laidback Latin-flavored folk-rocker with lyrics that are a real riot, and Stephen rips out a hot acoustic solo toward the end. "Dark Star" is a tour-de-force, grooving along infectiously with a catchy opening riff, jazzy chord changes and electric piano work, more superb lyrics and vocal harmonies, and another great acoustic guitar solo from Stills. The orchestrated rocker "I Give You Give Blind", with its anthemic pleading choruses, brings the album to a rousing, soul-stirring conclusion.

I could go on and on, but really, the greatness of this album speaks for itself. Each member is demonstrated at their peak on this beautiful, must-have masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Take it for what it is........2007-03-03

While good in its' own right, you have to look at this item for what it really is... A "Greatest Hits" of sorts that was manufactured for the European and Australian markets with many of the tracks represented by outtake versions and alternate mixes. If you already have the CSN box set (the "box") there's nothing much for you here unless you are a completist. If you don't own the "box", aren't a completist, or are a "casual fan" there are better choices.

If you are a "casual fan" you'll want both "So Far" AND "The Greatest Hits" as there are no tracks with Neil Young performing with the group on "The Greatest Hits" selection and "So Far" is one of the few CDs with "Ohio" among the track list.

Most others would be satisfied with "Crosby, Stills, and Nash", "Deja Vu", "CSN" (The single CD), and this set for its' handful of rarities, unless you can't stand "alternate tracks".

If you want alternate/rare/unreleased tracks to go with your collection the "box" is a better choice.

If all you are looking for is the studio version of "Chicago/We Can Change the World" then it's this, the CSN "Box", or "The '60s: Original NBC Motion Picture Soundtrack" (which is OOP) as this song was only released as a single and currently appears nowhere else on CD.

If you are a completist, why are you still reading?

3 out of 5 stars Good But Deceiving.......2007-01-21

I grew up with this band and was 16 when their first album was released in 1969. They are one of my favorites and no doubt their music (not their drug-laden personal lives) has influenced my lifelong perspectives on relationships, politics, etc. I would dearly love to have a 2 CD set of their best ORIGINAL songs that are remastered, but sadly this 2-CD set does not come close to fitting the bill because of all the alternate versions.

If I were marketing a 2-CD best of I'd have dedicated Disc 1 to their first 2 albums - 1969's CS&N and 1970's CSN&Y. If you include all but "Pre-Road Downs", "Country Girl" and "Everybody I love You", the other 17 songs from these first 2 albums would easily fit onto 1 CD with several minutes left over. Throw in "Ohio", the shorter acoustic version of "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Find the Cost of Freedom" from the 4-Way Street album and you've got an incredible first CD.

The second CD can be devoted to the best from the other CSN albums, as well as some solo or duo efforts from the rest of their works. Musts would be "Just a Song Before I Go", "Dark Star", and "Cathedral" (from CS&N 1977), "Southern Cross", "Wasted On the Way", "Daylight Again" and "Delta" (from 1982's Daylight Again), "Got It Made" and "Soldiers of Peace" (from 1988's American Dream), and "Yours and Mine", "Haven't We Lost Enough", and "After the Dolphin" (from 1990's Live It Up). Live It Up was not a very good CD but these 3 songs are fantastic.

I'd add some of the better solo songs of each artist including Crosby's "Laughing", "Music Is Love", and "Tracks In The Dust", Still's "Change Partners", "Love the One You're With", and "Dear Mr. Fantasy", and Nash's "Chicago/Change the World", "Wild Tales", and "Immigration Man". I'd end it with the studio version of "Find the Cost of Freedom" that is on this current 2 CD set.

There you'd have an incredible 2-CD collection with NO ALTERNATE VERSIONS! Now why can't the marketers release something like this? It's a no-brainer and is what I suspect most who are intersted in this group would want. The new 1 CD greatest hits (2005) partially accomplishes this but this group is too great to have only a 1 CD compilation (I have the same gripe about Neil Young's new 1 CD greatest).

But I'm just the idiot customer that will now probably buy the remastered version of all the original albums so I can make my own 2-CD compilation. And that's just what they want me to do!!

This CD, with all the alternate versions, is interesting for those who might have all the originals, but is woefully inadequate if you only want one definitive 2-CD collection of their best. For that reason, I can't give it more than 3 stars.

1 out of 5 stars ((((BEWARE)))) NOT WHAT IT CLAIMS TO BE !.......2007-01-17

This isn't the excellent collection it appears to be. There are TWELVE alternate versions (demos) in this collection. That would be fine, if they had said this anywhere on the outside packaging, BUT THEY DIDN'T.

So now I'm stuck with an expensive double cd of demos songs I cannot stand because they don't sound like the versions I wanted, and because they remind me of how much I want to throw this at Graham Nash's head. Shame on you Nash!!!

Also, as another reviewer said, the sound quality is less than stellar. With music of this (potential) quality, you should not waste your money on inferior versions and inferior mastering.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation, But One Song Noticably Absent.......2006-08-18

I too, much like a previous reviewer, bought this for the original version of "Chicago/We Can Change the World." I have to say that I was extremely pleased and satisfied with the copious song selection, but upon further review of the track listing, I realized one glaring omission: "Deja Vu." I was honestly surprised that nobody else noted this in any of the reviews that I read, but I think it's worth noting that the very track that starts their 1974 primer compilation, "So Far," not being included in this set is a little displeasing. But no matter, for I am content to have the group's 1970 seminal release by the same name which features said track; one of their most complex and intricate arrangements, and a song that for many defined CSNY's signature harmonious stylings. Still, an otherwise great anthology by a timeless quartet. Glad to hear--and see--them still rocking in all their glory even now in 2006!

1 out of 5 stars Worst purchase I've made for CSN.......2005-08-07

This 2 CD album, which is rated 4.5 stars by many people is actually one of my WORST purchases! The audio quality is poor, the selections sound like they came right off the Woodstock stage ... if you like it "rough cut" this album is for you. But for me it was a total waste of money. Can't believe the high stars for this one ... it makes one wonder about the review process ... doubt I'll trust it in the future.

Album Description

One of the most enduring musical partnerships of our time, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Crosby, Stills & Nash are revered for their peerless vocal harmonies, inspired songwriting and musical virtuosity. When the trio first sang together at a friend's Laurel Canyon house in 1968, their uncanny harmonic convergence was immediately apparent, and CSN took shape. Each member came to the new venture from other high-profile bands-Crosby from the Byrds, Stills from Buffalo Springfield, and Nash from the Hollies-and together, they formed that rarest of musical entities, a "supergroup" that lived up to its billing. CSN's 1969 self-titled debut album is one of the true masterpieces of the rock 'n' roll canon, and 1982's Daylight Again is a brilliant portrait of their musical evolution. Still touring and recording together, CSN is an American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reissue Of Exceptional Debut From Three Great Singer/Songwriter/Human Beings.......2007-01-30

This CD is an outstanding reissue of an exceptional debut from three great singer/songwriters. There are many great songs here, including "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "You Don't Have To Cry", "Pre-Road Downs", "Wooden Ships", "Helplessly Hoping", "Long Time Gone", and "49 Bye-Byes." The fact that CSN (and Y) all believe that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes this expanded reissue, as well as any other CSN/CSNY CD (except LIVE IT UP) an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Still Fresh After All These Years..........2006-11-06

For some reason after replacing most of my "albums" with their CD counter parts I noticed I had C,S,N & Y Deja Vu but not the orignal C,S & N debut. So, I finally ordered it...I put it on as soon as I received it and just was blown away how good it still sounded. To my ears it really had not aged a bit. The vocal harmonies and melodies were gorgeous and the songs themselves still retained an ageless beauty whose substance is not bound to the era from which it was created but remains timeless and pertinent to the soul and emotions of any era, much like a classical piece of music. I am certainly glad I finally followed thru and updated my music collection with this. Truly an ageless all-star for anyone who loves good music. B.Auger

1 out of 5 stars Lousy Job.......2006-09-17

One would wonder, what's happening to Rhino? What happened to the so called "hand made records" that made us think who else by Rhino could've done? In my opinion, they are losing it. I'm not the first one to complain. Read the critics on the Talking Head's Brick Box Set and you'll know what I'm talkin' about. This particular release not only doesn't improve a bit the sound of the late 90's remaster version of this outstanding album, but actually has so many problems that makes even the non-remaster version superior. An to make you even more confuse about the "remaster crase" of the last years, this release is claim to be in HDCD. Well, if they say so, it's fine for me, but I couldn't tell the difference. The bonus tracks are fine, but it's too much money for so little return. Rhino is having problems. I can tell. I've always been one of their biggest fans and I have most of its greatest releases from the past years, including the two Grateful Dead Box Sets. What a marvellous job they did on that release. That's absolutely not the case here. Avoid it.

3 out of 5 stars Why did I buy this?.......2006-08-04

The music gets five stars. The 3 stars are for the lousy remastering job. There are so many problems here, let me list them for you:

1. I did a direct comparison between this new remaster and the older remaster job from the mid-90's. The older version blows this one away! This new remaster lacks any high end, making a lot of the songs sound flat.

2. The beginning of "49 Bye Byes" is cutoff. Crosby sings "You better come on in my kitchen / because it's going to be raining outside." This part is missing. Apparently, the estate of Robert Johnson objected (why now, after all these years?).

3. If you're thinking of buying this disc for the bonus tracks, save your money. The best one, "Song With No Words" is already available on the CSN boxset. The others are nice demos, but don't really lend themselves to repeated listening.

4. THE KICKER: They removed a picture of Dallas Taylor from the back of the CD booklet. On the original LP and subsequent CD issues, drummer Dallas Taylor is seen peering through the door. Since he is currently in litigation with the band, they saw to it to remove him from the album jacket!

The sound is NOT an improvement, the bonus tracks are lackluster and one track is actually edited. Stick with your older copy and save your money.

4 out of 5 stars this is a good album.......2007-05-17

This is a good album. It is not the classic that Deja Vu is, but the qualities that made them great are still there. The harmonies that are unmatched, good rockers from Young, Still's love songs that you tap your feet to, the brooding introspective "Compass" from Crosby. Nash does get real preachy, but he still has a way with a melody. There is some art that pales in comparison to the Mona Lisa, but is still great art. The same goes here.

3 out of 5 stars CSNY's weakest effort.......2007-03-31

This is CSN&Y's weakest album. It has a few good songs on it, the best being Still's "Got It Made" which recalls their classic style and harmonies. Young's "American Dream" is ok, but nowhere near his best work. The rest of it is pretty mediocre. 60's hippies trying to renew their protest movement in the late 80's. It just doesn't work.

This CD is only recommended for avid CSNY fans.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-08-18

Bending from traditonal CSN and CSNY music but still a very good album.

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked and undervalued.......2006-02-17

American Dream is my favorite CSNY album; actually, it's my favorite CSN album as well. That notwithstanding, Neil Young is a major reason for this album's beauty and staying-power. After spending most of the '80s making worthless trash, Young returned to song-writing form here and then made a solo comeback with Freedom the following year.
This album could have been done by Stills, Nash & Young (and guest-featuring David Crosby). Crosby doesn't do much at all on this album besides contributing two tracks, the introspective gentle acoustic "Compass" and the anti-military rant "Nighttime for the Generals." Maybe Crosby was recovering from one of his legendary drug binges.
Most of the material was written and played by Stills, Nash and Young. Graham Nash wrote most of the political material on this album: "Shadowland," which continues the theme of "Nighttime for the Generals," the environmentalist plea "Clear Blue Skies" and the naively hopeful "Soldiers of Peace." The problem with "can't we all just get along" songs like this is that there are no people with similar views in the Islamofascist world, or if there are, their voices are quickly stilled by state repression and drowned out in the cacophony of America-hatred. Nash is a sentimental hippie, but he does have a lovely voice and he can write simple love songs as well - "Don't Say Goodbye."
Stephen Stills has a powerful rock voice and shines on his tracks, "Got it Made," Drivin' Thunder," "That Girl" and "Night Song" (three of which were co-written by Young). But the real musical beauty of this album comes from the songs performed by Neil Young. From the simple bass guitar-driven satire of a fallen televangelist in "American Dream," to the lovely acoustic guitar on "Feel Your Love," Young is simply pleasing to the ear. Even his political writing here - "Name of Love" - is not heavy-handed but just a simple exhortation. It could have come from Jesus. "This Old House" is also a beautiful but sad track about a family losing its home.

In 1982, there were few groups as out of phase as CSN. Their supergroup status once lionized in the late '60s and early '70s had turned into liability. Viewed as fossils by the emerging MTV generation, they steadfastly stood with their heartfelt idealistic politics on their sleeve. Produced by El Lay producer extraordinaire Craig Doerge (known mostly for adding synthesizer to the work of Jackson Browne among others) and Stanley Johnson, Daylight Again features several noteworthy songs. "Wasted on the Way," "Southern Cross," and "Into the Darkness" are among the more substantial contributions from these musicians struggling to find their place in a world clearly getting away from them. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2007-05-28

My most CSN(Y) album. I LOVE "Delta" most of all but in all actuality, I love all of the songs :) But "Delta" pulls at my heartstrings for some reason. I listen to it quite often. :) David Crosby has the voice on an angel.

Thanks for a job well done guys and thanks to you Amazon for selling this FANTASTIC piece of musical art.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't like this album check your pulse........2006-12-30

Many of the songs here made it to the Greatest Hits CD. In fact, I went to my music-downloading site to see if indeed it was a compilation! Check out the great rocking songs: "Wasted On The Way", "Southern Cross", "Since I Met You". And there is the wonderfully subdued "Delta" and "Daylight Again." Also, "Might As Well Have A Good Time" is also pretty good. Guess what: out of 11 songs only maybe 4 are filler. This is a statistically bizarre situation. Most albums by artists have one good song and the rest suck. I suspect that for many CSN fans who give it four stars, if the CD actually has hits on it that means the artists "sold out." I guess they are just frustrated musicians. God help us.

5 out of 5 stars My Always Album.......2006-11-04

Long time CSN&Y&anyone else they collaborate with fan, I welcomed this collection originally as a tape. ON first hearing, it became my favorite for road trips, traffic gridlock, kitchen clean up, or other jobs around the house. The mellow mood seems right for most of mine. I wore out the tape version, so the CD was the next logical step.

3 out of 5 stars Their weakest release.......2005-10-14

Save for the classic "Southern Cross" which is actually covered better by Jimmy Buffett, unsurprisingly, this album is the weakest ever released by the trio. I'd rec skipping it.
