After the misstep of Hotter Than Hell, Kiss recaptures the energy of their first album and go one better with Dressed to Kill. Obviously the most well-known song off this album is "Rock and Roll All Nite," but there's a lot of other good material here as well, including the upbeat "Room Service," the groove-heavy "C'mon and Love Me," and the sensual "She." Though Kiss would not become superstars until their next album (that would be Destroyer), Dressed to Kill shows them headed in the right direction, having hit on the elusive formula of heavy chords, strong rhythms, and a determination not to take themselves too seriously. --Genevieve Williams --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Limp-wristed Leftovers of Pre-Kiss Tunes.......2007-06-07

The first Kiss album to feature Gene Simmons' schlocky, sexist tripe ("Room Service," and "Ladies in Waiting"). Two or three other tracks were leftovers from their Wicked Lester days, although they're done up much harder here. "Rock and roll All Nite" has been played to death, obviously. For me, the standout tracks are "Rock Bottom," "Two Timer," and "Getaway."

This is by far Kiss' most commercial, "accessable" record from the early days.

Ignore the description of Hotter Than Hell as "misstep" and "turgid," etc...; if you're looking to hear "live" sounding, darker, rawer and less slick-sounding Kiss music, get Hotter Than Hell.

5 out of 5 stars KISS find their Sound.......2007-05-30

I love this record! It has it all. And they seemed to have settled on a sound that is a hard classic live -in- the studio sound that they would later replicate on other records. "Room Service" kicks major butt - Paul's vocals shine and the riffs on this song and every other one really rock. Every song is a highlight: Gene's "Ladies in Waiting" "She" and "Two Timer" are classic Gene on the prowl with cool riffs and baselines. Peter's playing is tighter as well on this record. Ace's riffs and solos shine on every track. Let's not forget my favorites; "Love Her all I Can" "Getaway" - penned by Ace, and "Rock Bottom". Of course, this album includes "Rock and Roll All Night" - and even though I prefer the "Alive" version, this one rocks and is tight. Overall I just feel this is the record that Kiss really settled into a sound all their own, their playing seemed tighter and the spirit on this album kicks major butt. It's no surprise that 1975 turned out to be their breakout year.

4 out of 5 stars Dressed To Kill: Kiss On The Rise.......2006-06-04

Everyone knows that "Rock And Roll All Nite" is the most famous song on this album, and with "Detroit Rock City" probably the most famous Kiss song ever. But Dressed To Kill didn't stop at that single gem of rock perfection. Kiss came off what some refer to as a misstep with Hotter Than Hell and once again went back to basics with straight-forward three-chord rock music. Nothing fancy here, Dressed To Kill goes back to the basic formula that made Kiss' 1st album classic.

"Room Service" rocks on all levels. "Two Timer" feels like filler, just doesn't grab you with the usual Kiss hooks. "Ladies In Waiting" is typical Gene Simmons sexfest (that's a good thing) and rocks along the lines of the latter "Ladies Room." "Get Away" is a great song, Peter Criss on vocals, good hooks and good riffs. "Rock Bottom" a Kiss classic and live staple for years and years, truly great. "C'mon And Love Me" another Kiss gem. "Anything For My Baby" the riff sounds eerily reminiscent of several earlier Kiss tunes and that might be all right, this song never really did anything for me, but it's not bad, just typical. "She" is killer, the opening riff is great and the heavy tone is monster, great Gene Simmons vocals. "Love Her All I Can" another cool riff song, just something missing so it wasn't one of my personal favs. "Rock And Roll All Nite" one of the greatest rock tunes ever written. What else can I say.

Overall, Dressed To Kill found Kiss reinventing themselves (or regressing) to keep the fans happy and rocking. They would do this countless times in their career. A consistant album, there isn't really a bad song here, it's just not as perfect as it could have been. Some of the songs feel like filler to me, or redundant. Otherwise, it's definitely a bright spot in the Kiss catalog.

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Over 30 years and it still rocks and roll all nite!!!.......2006-03-03

Situation;KISS is an unknown band that made is appearance 2 years earlier, after two respectable album sales KISS`s 3rd album, the last from the pre-Alive!sequence their record breaking album Alive that would follow up months latter.Dressed to kill is the record that came out after hotter than hell, and as you can expect it has better sound. Many good tracks here rarities like classics.

Songs; The most known song on the album is `rock n roll all nite`the original version this song would become big after they performed it on Alive. Many songs are about love like;c mon and love me,love her all i can, anything for my baby, she, ladies in waiting. As i said earlier it has way better sound than hotter than hell but its less heavy.

They took some stuff from the wicked lester era and putted it here `She`,`love her all i can`were co-wrote by Gene with Steve Coronel and it fits very well here. They took these songs because the record company wanted another album and a that time KISS were running out of songs.

So they came out with `she`and `love her all i can` and they fit well on dressed to kill. Its a pre alive album so definetly a must have for fans. They didnt rush anything they did a simple album with short time little more than 30 minutes but the result is awesome.

Dressed to kill was also the band`s first album to reach the top 40 and it went gold like the other begening albums and it has 10 tracks that are KISS classics. While hotter than hell was more about their basic rock n roll they got fancy on this one, short running time and tracks under 3 minutes but the result is the same ,a great kiss album. The band was worried with its airtime because it was so short but in the end it was great.

The list of songs is;
1.Room service
2.Two timer
3.Ladies in waiting
4.Get away
5.Rock bottom
6.C mon and love me
7.Anything for my baby
8.She
9.Love her all i can
10.Rock n roll all nite

Some of the songs here would be on Alive in a few months this is the last album until they get famous as Alive would get quadruple platinum and destroyer triple platinum. An album fans shoudnt be without ,really good, awesome you will love it!

4 out of 5 stars A Different Sound.......2006-01-24

"Dressed To Kill," Kiss' third album in a little over a year, was quite a bit different than the two that preceeded it. Neil Bogart, the owner of the label, was upset that his only act had not yet produced a "hit single." He decided to produce this album in hopes of changing that. Since the group was lacking in the songs department, they locked themselves up until they wrote enough songs to make an album. The result is some of Kiss's best songs and some very mediocre ones.

1. Room Service-4/5. This song from Paul is very upbeat and bouncy. His vocals are great here, but the song is a little too happy-sounding to be perfect.
2. Two Timer-4/5. A typically dark and heavy Gene song. The lyrics aren't very good, but the music is fantastic and Gene's vocals are great.
3. Ladies In Waiting-4/5. Great music and vocals from Gene. The lyrics are a little lacking on this song too. A good rocker.
4. Getaway-4/5. An odd sounding Ace song. His songs are usually the heaviest ones. This one is to lightweight and bouncy. Peter's vocals make up for the mediocre music.
5. Rock Bottom-5/5. A beautiful acoustic intro from Ace moves right into an excellent rocker from Paul. This is one of those overlooked Kiss Klassics. This one of Paul's heaviest. Excellent.
6. Come On and Love Me-5/5. A great song from Paul feauturing him playing the lead guitar solos. He handles them very well. The vocals and lyrics are excellent.
7. Anything For My Baby-3/5. This is where things begin to go wrong. This is a very weak song from Kiss. It doesn't have any energy and the band sounds bored performing it. Probably just a filler song.
8. She-5/5. One of Gene's old Wicked Lester songs. Musically, it sounds like Blue Oyster Cult. It is very heavy with a slow beat. The lyrics don't make much sense, but Gene sings them perfectly. One of the best of all Kiss songs.
9. Love Her All I Can-4/5. Not too bad. The music is cool and Ace's solos are perfect. The lyrics are cool, but the verses are sung by Gene and Paul together in an odd key and it doesn't work real well.
10. Rock and Roll All Nite-5/5. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past thirty years, you know this song. Great party anthem. It is WAY overplayed though. Otherwise a good song.

This album is a little too happy and bouncy for me to consider a Kiss Klassic. However, it does have a few songs that no fan should be without. Overall, recommended for hardcore fans, but for casual fans, stick with a collection.

2 out of 5 stars Okay "updated" recordings -- But not a value!.......2006-01-07

When I was kid, So Much In Love was one of the great summer songs. I was wanted this song so much that I bought The Tymes Greatest Hits -- hoping it would be original. I got burned! However, once I gave it a fair listen, I felt a little better about it even though the CD was not cheap. Now that the Cameo-Parkway collection is out, I sold this CD. Don't buy this one if want the original hits. It's not a value!

1 out of 5 stars Where are the original???.......2004-11-30

I am so sick of re-recordings!! Where the heck (I feel much stronger about this) can we find original versions?? Better yet, why doesn't Amazon.com bother telling us what we're really getting?? Every CD of re-recordings should be clearly identified as such!!

      1 out of 5 stars Too Bad!!!.......2004-01-10

Another poor attempt to present to the public an anthology of the old Cameo/Parkway artists. These are badly re-recorded songs (at least the Parkway ones)of the Tymes, who in their prime, were one of the best! Your only shot at getting the original song is to find the record OR an import that used records to produce a CD anthology. I have several and they are pretty good! So while we wait for "abkco" to release the likes of Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, Dee Dee Sharp, The Orlons, The Dovells and The Tymes, were are stuck with lesser re-recordings of these artists from the early to mid-60s.

2 out of 5 stars Decent quality recording, but not original versions of hits.......2002-01-15

These are not the original versions of the Tymes hits. If that is what you are looking for, keep looking. Otherwise, a pretty good re-recording of "Wonderful, Wonderful" and "So Much In Love".

1 out of 5 stars Not all vocal chords improve with age.......2001-03-07

Not only are these NOT the original recordings, these are obviously new recordings of thirty-year old favorites. The age of the artists shows in their cracking voices. This was so unpleasant to listen to, I threw it away rather than subject another music lover to this caterwauling.

5 out of 5 stars DeNiro or Not.......2002-01-03

If you're a fan of Robert DeNiro and have seen all of his movies, this CD will be of good use to you. The music will bring back moments in the films that you adored. Even if the music is not recognizable to you, the tune of almost every song is soothing. The first song 'Once Upon A Time In America' and 'Cavatina' are great for background music anywhere. And the price for the whole CD is a good value. It's an import, so the quality isn't going to be as well-heard, but that doesn't change the mood that this music sets. From a sense of joy and fun to sad times, this CD offers many types of music from the many films of Robert DeNiro.

4 out of 5 stars Good music "to do things".......2001-06-14

I heard the title track, "Cavatina," on my local public radio station and thought it was so pretty I searched for it knowing only that word and the artist for that song. I was surprised at the very low cost--maybe it's been around too long. But it's a good CD. The music is guitar, much of it classically flavored and played very well. The fact it's a tribute to Robert DeNiro is puzzling to me--the liner notes don't explain that. But a number of the tunes are, like Cavatina, pretty. It's the type of music that you can put through your headphones while you're doing something else; I think my daughter would find it good for her job as a data entry clerk. It's a good few notches above elevator music, but not a top-of-the charts type of CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the last ten years.......2007-06-15

Bap's first two albums were very good, but this one is his masterpiece. Admittedly, an "homage" album to Hank and Elvis doesn't sound like the best idea, but in Bap's hands, it just comes out perfectly. Irish country-soul with a little bit of Van Morrison thrown in.

        5 out of 5 stars Bap Kennedy-one of the world's best singers.......2004-09-08

I'm not exaggerating. Bap's voice has hints of Paul Simon, and John Lennon here and there, but it also has its own seductive, delicious, addicting quality. His album lures you into a sort of altered state from which you do not want to return. When I first got it, I listened to it on my commute for a month. That means I heard this album over 80 times in a row before I could stand to listen to anything else again. Bap's music is what most country is not, which is: very romantic and relaxing, for the most part. People try to pay it compliments by comparing it to other, better known musicians' work, but honestly, Bap Kennedy does not remind me of anyone else, and that is a high compliment from me. The songs are great, and the musicians are superb, but for me its the voice. I'd buy an album of this guy reading the phone book.

        5 out of 5 stars Lonely Street.......2004-03-15

This is a remarkable concept album that never feels forced. It is a sweet, almost goofily so, loving tribute to his twin musical heroes Elvis Presley and Hank Williams (Apparently his prior tribute to Hank Williams Hillbilly Shakespeare wasn't quite enough). This is am album full of adorable songs about a two men and the boy who followed in their footsteps.
The album opens with "Good Times On Franklin Road" a subtle reference to the home Hank and Audrey Williams shared. Next comes "Stuck With Myself" about living a life more myth than man. "Moonlight Kiss" is a heartbreakingly sweet love song, the sort Hank Williams might have written to Audrey. "Be Careful What You Wish For" travels with Elvis, from the jail his father got put in to the first drive "down the street that would carry my name." "I think I was trying to figure out the chords to Suspcicion and accidentally wrote this one" is how Bap Kennedy decribes the witty pick up "Almost ALways Wrong." "Elvis Hank And Me" takes another subtle reference--this the title of a book about the Louisiana Hayride--to sing about scraping around, trying to get a start as a singer. "Lonely Street" was inspired by Elvis Presley's habit of late night walks alone. "Gladys and Veron" is a tender and touching ballad about Elvis Presley's parents. "Drunk On The Blood Of Christ" is a fun, Tuba Laden Irish Catholic take on "I Saw The Light." "Baby It's Alright" is another song about fighting and making up. "Hanks Last Waltz" is a georgous ballad about Hank's death from his perpective--including the classic Williams attitude on such lines as "When they burry me just watch 'em arrive/I can pack 'em in boys dead or alive." "Saturday Night To Sunday Morning" is a simple thank you note to the men who's music has gotten him throught the tough nights. The album closes with "Lonesome Lullaby," a pretty song about having only a song left to leave behind.
The liner notes have some very fun blurbs about what inspired the songs. On "Lonesome Lullaby" he writes "Hank went to hell and back for his inspiration and was dead before he was thirty. he left behind a cunch of timeles, beautiful songs. Did he think it was worth it? I hope so. This album show that the influence Williams exacted on artists like this definately helps.

        5 out of 5 stars moonlight kiss.......2003-01-30

I've noticed that the previous reviewers have failed to mention moonlight kiss as a beautiful stand out track. I would buy this CD for that song alone...dispite it's typical "love song" lyrics I find it very poetic and musically beautiful. If nothing else you need to hear this song.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent For Music Fans Of All Eras.......2002-07-07

Bap Kennedy's music is instantly likeable. Pleasant, thoughtful and beautifully constructed this superb album is surpassed in quality only by `Domestic Blues', which you also should buy. Bap's music is lively alt country, in spite of his Irish heritage, reminding one of the Byrds, The Dead and The Flying Burrito brothers, as well as more recent bands like The
Bottle Rockets and Son Volt. Stand out tracks include `Drunk On The Blood Of Christ', `Almost Always Wrong' `Stuck With Myself' and `Be Careful What You Wish For'. A

4 out of 5 stars This is the only recordings I have of Steely Dan!.......2006-03-25

I pretty much kept a distance from Steely Dan in thier heyday, I thought they were too commercial, but they did have some good songwriting, and an occasional guitar solo that rips. I saw these tapes in the store that are essentially the same recordings. The tapes were very cheap, and it was obvious that someone got a hold of pre-Steely Dan demos and released them probably without permission from Becker and Fagen. I wasn't expecting much, but I was interested in hearing how they developed thier song writing. I was pleasantly surprised to hear songs that sounded familiar although I probably never heard most of the music. The familiarity was just because the song writing quality was excellent. Lyrically each song tells an interesting story, mostly about underground lifestyles. My favorites were 'Brooklyn' and 'Roaring of the Lamb'. I listened to those tapes over and over, and I don't have a single Steely dan record in my collection.
I think the arrangement of Brooklyn is better on these tapes than on the album, I think it's a different singer, and the album version has almost an Eagles like sound. I think I like the raw side of the recordings, and SD tends to be too polished on record, probably an under-statement. So if you think Steely Dan is too polished, this is for you. You won't find the great studio musicians here, it's mostly just piano and vocals with maybe a litle bass and drums. The emphasis is on the songwriting. I think if I were to play cover tunes I would want to play Brooklyn and do a version that's even more laid back and jazzier like (Herbie Hancock maiden voyage?) than this version. I also like the lyrics to 'Roaring of the Lamb' it seems to have a more positive message perhaps?
I probably will never buy Steely Dan CD's too worldly and too polished but these recordings seem to be essential to my collection, so I looked this up.

          3 out of 5 stars First takes.......2003-12-15

This is a collection of lesser known works and demos of old Dan favorites. Surprising that they would let this one slip out into the public as they were always such perfectionists.

Still, it is intersting to hear the first takes of these well known favorites, many unplugged, with that "garage band" sound.

Please note, this CD will only be of interest to real hardcore Dan fans who are thoroughly familiar with all of their studio works from "Can't Buy A Thrill" to "Gaucho".

3 out of 5 stars Finding "Sun Mountain".......2003-07-25

'Android Warehouse' collects most of the extant demo or pre-Steely Dan recordings made by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, along with other musicians on some of the tracks. These recordings have proven essential for fans of Walter and Donald.
I said in the previous paragraph that "most" of the early recordings are here. There is a version of "Sun Mountain" in this collection, but two versions actually exist. The one represented here is skeletal, with Donald Fagen straining at the difficult vocal part and accompanying himself at the piano. The second, more finished version (not included) utilizes a quartet: Becker and Fagen play bass and piano, respectively, a drummer completes the rhythm section, and there is a vocalist who can handle the nearly two-octave melodic range of the song.
You must hear the alternate version of "Sun Mountain" to appreciate this lovely song. It is available on a collection called 'Catalyst: The Original Recordings (1968-71)'. 'Catalyst' costs more than 'Android Warehouse' and contains all the same music, but adds the second recording of "Sun Mountain".
A fanatic will probably need to have the 'Catalyst' release.

3 out of 5 stars collectors and fanatics will appreciate this.......2001-11-27

The only thing I can add to the reviews posted above is a caveat: If you want stripped-down demos of mostly unreleased material, make sure you get the most complete version of these demos since a lot of collections include only a portion of the batch. Some are much more "full-band" than others. Brain Tap Shuffle, Come Back Baby, Yellow Peril, Let George Do It, and a number of others would not have been out of place on Can't Buy A Thrill. Also, Fagen does not sing lead on all of these songs - some studio ringers take a number of lead vocals. I happen to like the early harmonization of Fagen and Becker which has never really occurred since. (Of course, I am one of those oddballs that loves Becker's voice and solo CD 11 Tracks of Whack).

          5 out of 5 stars Beginnings.......2000-08-25

"Android Warehouse" is a collection of demos that Walter Becker and Donald Fagen recorded to shop to various publishing companies in the late '60's. While a few of the tracks were later re-recorded by the duo, most were not, so this is an indispensable item for all serious Steely Dan fans. The audio quality is passable, the songs are mostly excellent, and all have something to offer. While these tracks represent Steely Dan's earliest recorded rumblings, they were never originally issued. The first Steely Dan (er, Becker-Fagen with Dias) album was '71's soundtrack "You Got To Walk It Like You Talk It". That album is much more polished and certainly more engaging, but the demos collected on "Android Warehouse" are rare glimpses into the duo's burgeoning genius.
