4 out of 5 stars God of Thunder, and Beatlesque Tunes.......2007-05-31

I think there's enough cool songs on here to outweigh the wacky ones. One thing I'll never figure out is why all 4 members decided to have female background singers on their records. More groupies I guess? Anyways, "Radioactive" is a cool Gene tune and sounded great live on the Dynasty Tour. "See You Tonite" is Gene doing a great Beatles interp., but I like it. I also like "Man of 1000 Faces" and "Mr. Make Believe." Gene gets silly with "Living in Sin" and "Tunnel of Love" and "When You Wish Upon a Star." But having the Kiss guys branch out and do different things is what makes these solos cool and unique. At this point, they had to write some different stuff.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite KISS solo albums.......2007-02-23

Gene Simmons once again proves that he is not your average rock god! My favorite track off of this album is "When You Wish Upon a Star". It is a very eclectic mix of music styles, but is definitely worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Hot & Heavy.......2006-11-11

Gene Simmons' first solo album is AWESOME!!!!!!!!! It features 11 songs, and features guest artists, including (but not limited to), Joe Perry, Cher, and Bob Seger! I noticed that every one of KISS' solo albums do at least one cover of another artist. I can't remember Paul Stanley's cover, but I know Peter Criss covered "Tossin' And Turnin'" and Ace Frehley covered "New York Groove". Gene Simmons steps it up by a lot! He covers "See You In Your Dreams" by KISS! He also covers a Walt Disney classic, "When You Wish Upon A Star", since he widely credits Disney for being instrumental in helping him learn English (Gene was originally from Israel). You truly won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Gene shoulda borrowed Aces Guitar........2006-05-28

Radioactive kicks off the album. It features a very nice orchestral opening, and then it becomes an excellent blues rock song. Gene couldn't have started the album off better. We get more blues-based rock in Burning Up With Fever and True Confessions which are a bit dull.I like Mr.Make believe, which is a cool tune.
See You In Your Dreams is a poor attempt to better a version on Rock And Roll Over, this version stinks.
The album closes with When You Wish Upon A Star, which is a cover of the song popularized by the Disney corporation. Why on Earth he did that song has got me buggered, while he did his best to get real emotion in that song, this album never hit the spot like it should have.

1 out of 5 stars Gene Simmons - self-titled (Mercury) .......2006-04-21

Are they kidding with this release? This is the 1978 solo record by the blood-spitting Kiss bassist Gene Simmons.Paul Stanley's solo lp is much better(see my review).I couldn't honestly see too many fans actually buying this CD reissue EXCEPT for maybe bored(yawn!)completists.I don't like to whine that much, but this disc was sort of tough for me to sit all the way through. There are a few so-so cuts, like "Burning Up With Fever","See You Tonite" and possibly "Mr.Make Believe".But the album's closer "When You Wish Upon A Star" almost made my dinner come up.Simply avoid at ALL costs.

1 out of 5 stars Truely made me ill.......2007-07-10

Wow. I borrowed this CD from my brother, who found it used for like $2. I knew it was going to be bad, but I could not possibily have imagined how bad. I'll be right back.... I have to vomit.

1 out of 5 stars This CD is terrible. .......2007-01-10

Gene Simmons helped to create one of the biggest rock bands of all time and has had his hands in so many other money making projects that I think he can handle the failure of this CD, but as a huge KISS fan and Gene fan I am urging you to not waste even the $1.25 on the used copy that I or anyone else is trying to get rid of. This CD shows why when you get to a certain level of fame you should hire people who will honestly tell you what they think. Gene must be surrounded by people who say all of his ideas are great because just about every idea on this CD is awful. I was so disapointed. Hopefully when he releases his boxed set "Monster" he will put at least some songs worth listening to.

2 out of 5 stars Hey Gene, No more solo albums, just stay in the Brothel .......2006-11-25

well at least the album cover is cute , because the songs on this are aweful. I was so disapointed by Gene's solo album. I knew it wasn't going to be as good as the KISS albums. So my expectations were minimal at best, but I at least expected to like it.

This album is so bad that I found myself wondering if Gene himeself ever listen to it before he put it out. I mean this album is embarassing.

I did like the title track. Bit the rest of the album was a disaster.this album isn't artistic, it isn't inspiring, and most of all it isn't even any good.

In the mid-to-late 1980's Ace Frehley embarked on a solo career with his band called "Frehley's Comet" that was rediculed by Gene Simmons. Although Frehley's comet wasn't all that bad, they weren't really great either. But as mediocre as Frehley's Comet was, Gene's album is so bad that it makes Ace Frehley's Comet look like Devine Greatness.

Gene is a disappointment. This cd sucks. hes lost any ability to notice good music now. pathetic..

      4 out of 5 stars Klassical KISS..........2004-06-25

KISS tribute albums started cropping up more than a decade ago very quickly oversaturating this market with a multitude of cds of varying quality (Hard To Believe, KISS of Death, Spacewalk). Now comes a tribute cd that offers a fresh and unique take on old KISS classics. Classical orchestration has long been a staple of KISS' repertoire, going back to the string ensemble used for the mega-hit Beth in 1976 progressing to the orchestral leanings and gregorian style chanting of the Elder album (1981) to the symphonic version of Black Diamond on their official KISS My A** tribute album to 2003's full blown KISS Symphony project.
This quartet interprets both well known KISS tunes (Detroit Rock City, Rock and Roll All Night) and more obscure material (Goin' Blind). Some of the choices are downright offbeat, a string quartet version of the funky Ace Frehley number New York Groove...surely you jest...but what is remarkable is how well it works.
Undisputed highlights are the beautiful renditions of Hard Luck Woman, Goin' Blind and Beth. The quartet incorporates subtle new parts that compliment these well loved melodies tremendously. Love Gun and I Was Made For Lovin' You are extremely powerful renditions also, if not just a little too reminiscent of the KISS Symphony cd and dvd. Even overplayed numbers like Calling Dr.Love and Rock and Roll All Nite are given new life by this incredibly talented ensemble.
From the Rock and Roll Over album influenced cover art to the last strains of New York Groove, this unique tribute cd is a winner all the way.

5 out of 5 stars From a (classic) KISS and Classical music Fan!.......2004-04-23

EXCELLENT! I just bought this CD, and have already listened to it a half dozen times. I am a HUGE fan from the classic KISS years (1974-1979 - the years with Peter and Ace in the group).
If you are a KISS fan, and also like string quartet music, you will love this. If you are a fan of either (KISS or string quartet music), you will have a better appreciation and like for both after purchasing and hearing this CD.
These guys give the correct respect to classic KISS performance and it is especially seen in the string harmonies, and Ace's guitar solos in each song (except of course "Beth" which didn't have a solo by Ace until the "Unplugged" CD). The only down side of this are the songs that aren't on it, but hopefully that will mean a Volume 2!

      GREAT CD!

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air........2004-10-21

Gene Simmons speaks in reasonable, black and white terms. His pragmatisum is refreshing and often hilarious. He'll give you the truth straight, and sometimes the truth hurts and offends. But it IS the truth, none the less. Like "Simon" on American Idol, he doesn't lie or sugercoat. The disc is well worth the money and healthy food for thought. Sit down and eat.

1 out of 5 stars The Idiocy Continues..........2004-10-09

This is yet more proof (not that you really needed it) that Gene Simmons has turned into the biggest idiot alive. I'm quite sure he couldn't care less what I or anyone thinks of him since he has a mega-fortune to immerse himself in that he's raked in from sticking it to his fans, especially in the past several years when Kiss has ceased being a rock & roll band and has once again turned into a wealth-obsessed corporate entity.

I refuse to feed Simmons' huge ego and bank account by buying this piece of nihilistic, neanderthal schlock that he calls "being honest"; besides, it's nothing you haven't already heard him run off at the mouth about a million times before.

1 out of 5 stars Please, Please, PLEASE..........2005-02-24

...will this repulsive, fat, balding, greedy reptile disappear forever?! I'm not asking much. I'm only asking that Greed $immon$ (and all like him) never, ever, EVER unleash a musical abortion upon the world like A-Hole AGAIN!!
I have never been a KISS fan (they never did it for me), but I decide to approach this album with an open mind. After all, Gene talks a lot of horsesh*t, but I was curious to see if he could back it up with good music (like Dave Mustaine does - I love Dave's music, and he'll always be one of my main guitar heroes, but seriously, the guy is a tool). And I'm sad to say that this album is, without hyperbole, the absolute WORST album to have ever soiled my ears (and over the years, I have been subjected to albums by Limp D*ckbizkit, the "Cool As Ice" soundtrack and the horror that was Six Feet Under's "Graveyard Classics", so that's saying alot). I STILL feel dirty, and no matter how hard I scrub, the dirt won't come off...
Of course, I wasn't stupid enough to actually PAY for this musical holocaust of an album - I downloaded it and burnt copies for everyone in my neighbourhood (Take THAT, Gene!!). When will Mr. $immon$ learn? Money is nice to have, but it can't buy you inspiration or TALENT. However, money CAN pay for good production, so what was Gene's excuse on this 'album'?
But I digress. Here are a couple of 'highlights'...

The Title Track - this song could have been (and probably WAS) written by a misguided teenage girl with an Avril Lavigne fixation. And the lyrics take stupidity to a whole new level... "You've got a personality like a bucket of pee"?!?! How Gene can keep a straight face on the album cover, with the knowledge that his name will forever be linked to THAT line is beyond me.

Firestarter - Guaranteed to clear any dance floor faster than a bomb threat. Musically identical to the original, but at least Keith Flynt had a little CHARACTER (even if he did look like the bastard son of Johnny Rotten and Ronald McDonald). My only question is "WHY"?

I'm not going to touch the other tracks. The only GOOD that could POSSIBLY come out of this horrific nightmare is the knowledge that whatever albums come after this couldn't POSSIBLY get any worse. You have been warned...

2 out of 5 stars At least Gene hit the name of the album..........2004-09-20

The name was meant to be "Firestarter", then it changed to "Dog" and finnaly it came to the stores as "A**hole". It could be anyone, it doesn't matter, 'cause the album would be equally bad. You can't take serious someone that someday recorded the Pinocchio theme, "When You Wish Upon a Star", because it's his favorite Disney movie. But at least you couldn't wait for something like this album.

Let's go straight to the point. Ureleased track from Kiss 1977, originally called "Jelly Roll", "Sweet Dirty & Love" opened the album, brings Eric Singer on the drums, and, on the condition of best quality rock'n roll music it's thousand light-years in front of anyone of the 12 tracks of this album. But you still have two other ones that deserves attention: the heavy "Weapons of Mass Destruction", with Bruce Kulick and "Carnival of Souls", with Richie Kotzen, this last one, an unreleased from Psycho Circus, the album of the fake return of Kiss original line-up. Oh, yeah, both guitar players steal the show!

Talkin' 'bout the rest... Imagine that "Firestarter", Prodigy cover (???) with Dave Navarro (ex-Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers) are not so worst! The situation isn't really good at all, right? "Waiting for the Morning Light", that the lyric was written with Bob Dylan, years ago, have a horrible piano line, and it's simply ridiculous! "Beautiful", "Now That You're Gone", "Dog", "If I Had a Gun" and "1,000 Dreams" (remember Pinocchio? Simmons got to write his own theme) goes from constrained to pathetic.

Simmons still bet his coins trying to sound modern in the title track, written by Frank Tostrup. Who?? The leader of the Norway band Shirleys Temple, that sended to Simmons Records a demo CD and now are getting some bucks with lawrights and royalties, 'cause he plays bass and drums in "A**hole". Oh, the song? Soundtrack to carry on any party from the cinema serie "American Pie". Yeah, that, you can twist your nose now!

But we still have "Black Tongue", written with Frank Zappa, and that have voice samples from the missed musician, and some nods of his guitar solos, duly followed by his son Dweezil. The song isn't bad, but still isn't good. Zappa was a crazy mad man, but I really doubt that he could ripp off or eat money... At last, he had a thousand of genius moments in his entire career, and I'm still wondering if he really would approve "Black Tongue", after listen the whole album. Pass far!!

5 out of 5 stars Gene has heart and style!.......2004-09-02

This long awaited CD is a 100% triumphant effort on the Demon's part! Do NOT buy this CD looking for "Destryer" re-re-re-revised - it's been done.... by KISS!!!! No, this is PURELY Gene - a couple of tracks ("Sweet and Dirty Love" (a song he originally wrote in the late '70's called "Jelly Roll") & "Weapons of Mass Destruction") offer no surprises, but are still in-your-face, vintage Gene material - while tracks like "A**Hole", "Beautiful", "Waiting for the Morning Light", and "If I had a Gun" will prove to all what a great mind Gene has for being UNIQUE! My personal favorite is "Whatever Turns You On (Turns Me On)" - a complete masterpiece with a great tune and right-on-the-money GENE lyrics! And, the Man who brought you "God of Thunder", "Unholy", and "Hate" now brings you "1,000 Dreams" - reminiscent of his 1978 Solo Album cover of "When You Wish Upon a Star"
Gene is truly a UNIQUE individual! Buy the CD, you will NOT be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars GOD OF THUNDER DELIVERS.......2004-09-01

For those who like their music to sound the same from disc to disc don't even buy this. I have all material from KISS including the solo discs and I like them all. INCLUDING THIS ONE. I will even get the Paul Stanley one when he releases it around Jan. As far as I am concerned it is said best on the live albums. YOU WANTED THE BEST YOU GOT THE BEST. THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD. KISS!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Gene,YOUR DAYS ARE LONG GONE.......2004-08-13

KISS are a very overated band that simply try to fool the minds of stupid people. It's all the same with KISS,they release a album then 2-3 weeks later it gets reduced then after a week theres some dumb bonus track added to it as well (except for the hit albums).Gene your lucky KISS fans are brainwashed and loyal to you because the rest of us wouldn't bother with your (...) merchanise even if it was for free.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing - Can't Believe this guy used to be in Kiss!.......2004-06-06

This is incredible work! He sounds nothing like he does in Kiss. It's amazing early work that I really enjoyed hearing. Much more diverse than his new CD! Awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely great music.......2002-12-13

This is a great collection of great music that's being performed by one of the greatest of the rock-a-billy singers, Jumpin' Gene Simmons, one of the original Sun Recording Artist. Sam Philips had him two winners from Tuplo, Elvis and Jumpin' Gene.

3 out of 5 stars Complete but necessary?.......2002-09-12

Can't beat 39 tracks on any artist, but generic, boring covers of Rock Around The Clock, Skinny Minnie, Teen-Age Letter, etc. make for a tedious listening. This is for the hard-core oldies or Simmons fan at this price; a cheaper, condensed package would do the average oldies fan just fine.
