on a loop.......2007-05-13
Warning! This CD is for die-hard Queen fans only. I bought this cd for my uncle's birthday, he is the aforementioned die-hard fan, and he loves the cd. But as I listened to it I couldn't help thinking that the CD player was on the 'repeat track' setting. Almost every song has is either the main theme remixed or the main theme hidden among dialogue. Why not a one star rating? Well, I just couldn't do that to Queen.
Seamless union of audio and visuals .......2007-03-07
This is one of those special cases where a movie and its soundtrack are perfectly matched. The film was a rainbow-splash of Retro Future and neo-Art Deco. Likewise, the soundtrack has whispers of the 1930's (comparable to "Xanadu"), but also affirms contemporary sensibilities. You get the Queen rock and metal that you expect, but also the subtler ambient-movements form the film, and sampled dialogue.
In reality, this disc is a mixture of soundtrack (one word), sound track (two words), and movie score, which blended diversity gives a better representation of the movie's audio component. To be sure, this is not your typical film tie-in. But considering the film, this oddness not only fits in, but enhances and complements the film.
I think my favorite tracks are the middle pieces--the ambient link-music. Queen is faced with a similar problem that John Williams had in doing "Star Wars": What does space sound like? If we visit another planet, what would we hear? Williams chose to follow Holst and Kubrick, and stuck with the traditional orchestra-pit combo, reinforcing the space opera with Wagnerian blasts. But Queen opted for something far more experimental.
Taking a cue from "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and "Forbidden Planet," they chose to go the electronic-synthesizer rout. Both approaches have their distinctive merits, but, in this case, Queen chose the better rout. Going electronic-synthesizer reinforced the film's setting--Ming's Warlord Palace, the forests of Arborea, the climatic air battle over Mongo, and its distinctive style--Retro Art Deco Future.
Since the union of audio and visuals was so seamless, I guess that is why I keep playing this soundtrack over and over again. Thank goodness for CDs and the repeat button. I would have worn out a vinyl LP years ago!

Queen's Flash Gordon Soundtrack is quite possibly the most perfect film score ever recorded. It is not a soundtrack; it is a score. And it rules. That is all that needs to be said.
That, and it rocks.
And as of 2006, Brian May (Queen's lead guitarist) got his PhD in Astrophysics... how cool is that?!?

Queen's first film score is a severely underrated and unfairly bashed album.......2006-03-26
Flash Gordon (1980.) The ninth Queen studio album. Also the soundtrack to the 1980 film of the same name.
INTRODUCTION:
The seventies were gone, and the eighties had arrived. It was a sharp musical transition, in which the trends changed overnight. Many of the so-called "classic rock" bands of the previous decade died out almost instantly, while a select few of them would continue to gain success. Queen fell somewhere in the middle. While their first effort of the new decade, The Game, stayed true to their old seventies rock stylings, the works to come were anything but similar to the good old days. What immediately followed was the Flash Gordon soundtrack. Queen was offered the opportunity to record the music for the 1980 theatrical remake of the classic science fiction series. The band jumped at the chance, and it became their ninth studio album. It was a radical departure from the band's music of the past, and as such, often gets a mixed reaction. Read on for my review!
OVERVIEW:
Queen released the Flash Gordon album on December 8, 1980 in the UK, and in February of 1981 in America. As usual, the band consisted of the usual cast of characters, consisting of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor. Guest musician Howard Blake arranged much of the instrumentation. Brian May produced the album, along with producer Mack. Tracklist consists of Flash's Theme, In The Space Capsule, Ming's Theme (In The Court Of Ming The Merciless), The Ring (Hypnotic Seduction Of Dale), Football Fight, In The Death Cell (Love Theme Reprise), Execution Of Clash. The Kiss (Aura Resurrects Flash), Arboria (Planet Of The Tree Men), Escape From The Swamp, Flash To The Rescue, Vultan's Theme (Attack Of The Hawk Men), Battle Theme, The Wedding March, Marriage Of Dale And Ming (And Flash Approaching), Crash Dive On Mingo City, Flash's Theme Reprise (Victory Celebrations), and The Hero.
REVIEW:
This is one of the most unfairly bashed and underrated albums in Queen's entire catalogue. The band strayed drastically from the norm, doing something no one ever expected them to do. The band who once proudly proclaimed that "no synthesizers were used on their albums" had used them extensively on the new record. Likewise, many fans were turned off by the choice that was made to splice the songs with dialogue from the movie. I personally agree with the fans who are turned off by this, but I don't think it's as big a deal as most people do. Most of the album is instrumental, the movie speeches being the only "lyrics" present in most tracks. It's an album in which the total result is superior to the parts as separate pieces. Despite the record being fairly unpopular and often neglected by Queen fans, it is still an excellent recording. Read on for my a track-by-track analysis!
-SIDE A-
-Flash's Theme (May):
The first track on the album was, by far, the most popular. Brian May's classic theme for the film's title character had a catchy beat, and guitars and synthesizers put to the best usage possible. The lyrics, few as they are, are some of the band's most memorable. A Queen classic, and a great album opener.
-In The Space Capsule (The Love Theme) (Taylor):
Here's an interesting piece. Synthesizers and horns combine, making for a rather unique piece. It sounds like something both classical and futuristic/electronic at the same time. Another solid piece from this underrated record.
-Ming's Theme (In The Court Of Ming The Merciless) (Mercury):
The third piece on the record is mostly quiet and eerie in its execution, appropriate considering it represents the film's villain. Toward the end, you get the classic, booming instrumental horn sounds that make film scores fun to listen to. Good track.
-The Ring (Hypnotic Seduction Of Dale) (Mercury):
The subtitle of this track is actually a pretty good description of the music that it contains. It's eerie, melodic synthesizer instrumentation that actually does a pretty good job representing the whole "hypnotism" subtitle. More excellent music from this long-forgotten gem of an album.
-Football Fight (Mercury):
Arguably the best song on the album, it is definitely one of my favorites here. It's straightforward hard rock, but tinged with synthesizers to create something that sounds even more unique in the long run. The only thing wrong with the tune is its rather short length, but then again, I guess most of the songs on the album have that same problem.
-In The Death Cell (Love Theme Reprise) (Taylor):
As the subtitle of this piece implies, for the most part, it is a reprised version of the Love Theme that appeared on the album a few tracks earlier. So, you get more of the same melodic synth-heavy stuff. This time around it's all synths - the horns are sacrificed in favor of more of them. A nice reprise, because it doesn't too heavily repeat the tune being reprised, nor is it something totally different.
-Execution Of Flash (Deacon):
Slow and eerie, and heavy on the synthesizers. That's the best way that this track can be described. With its gloomy melodies, the title is quite appropriate. One of many fine pieces this soundtrack serves the listener.
-The Kiss (Aura Resurrects Flash) (Mercury):
Here's another melodic instrumental, but this time it is heavy on the orchestral instrumentation. It sounds like something from a classic film score, but at the same time, sounds like something completely new. Interesting tune.
-SIDE B-
-Arboria (Planet Of The Tree Men) (Deacon):
For this, a tune based on another planet, John Deacon creates an instrumental piece that is eerily exotic. The song uses whistle-like synthesizer instrumentation - something the rest of the album lacks. A nice, unique piece more than worthy of its place on this soundtrack.
-Escape From The Swamp (Taylor):
Roger Taylor always had a talent for writing solid rock tunes. Combining that with all of the synthesizer technology that had become available to him, he creates one of the most memorable pieces that the soundtrack features. With a drum-intensive beat, and synths that create a sinister mood reminiscent of the situation from the film, it is a damn fine piece.
-Flash To The Rescue (May): Essentially, thus is a reprise of Flash's Theme, the first piece that appeared on the album, albeit with some minor fluctuations to the piece, so that it doesn't seem like a total rehash. There are many added synth-heavy instrumental portions which suit the piece perfectly. Good stuff, and some of the best synth usage on the whole album.
-Vultan's Theme (Attack Of The Hawk Men) (Mercury):
Now for a total change of pace. Here's a piece of music that is uplifting and melodic at the same time - it definitely has a feel of victory to it. The piece just sounds like it belongs on this sort of album or in this sort of film. As usual, an excellent tune.
-Battle Theme (May):
Brian May's Battle Theme is one of the ultimate pieces present on the soundtrack. Essentially, he takes his classic hard rock guitar stylings, and combines them with the synthesizers that the band was so heavily experimenting with on this album. You get the best of both worlds on this track. Solid material all the way through.
-The Wedding March (May):
Here's Brian May's take on the traditional wedding music. He manages to take an age-old traditional piece of music and breathe new life into it with his excellent guitar playing. There are an number of excellent pieces on this album - this is one of the many.
-Marriage Of Dale And Ming (And Flash Approaching) (May/Taylor):
Brian May and Roger Taylor collaborated on this track. Essentially, many elements from May's Flash Theme are reprised here, and many new Taylor-penned elements inter the mix, including some gloomy instrumental stuff. More solid instrumental material.
-Crash Dive On Mingo City (May):
Brian May is best known for his hard rockers, and this piece has some moments that rock very hard thanks to his guitar mastery. Like most of the pieces on the album, it's a short but sweet sequence that must be heard to be appreciated.
-Flash's Theme Reprise (Victory Celebrations) (May):
The title of this track says it all - it's a reprise of the classic Flash Theme that started off the album. There are some new musical elements thrown into the mix like horns and synthesizers, but for the most part, it's a rather faithful reprise.
-The Hero (May):
What better way to close out the album than with something that rocks hard? Brian May's album finale is one of the hardest, most straightforward rockers the album serves up. And, of course, there's some orchestration thrown in to spice things up. Freddie Mercury's vocals really shine on this one, and essentially, it sums up all of the band's skills from this era. Good way to finish things off.
OVERALL:
It's a shame this is one of Queen's albums that isn't very popular, not to mention one that gets mixed reviews, because it's a very good album that goes to show just how diverse the band could be when they wanted to. Some people just get so used to a band's old sound, and as such, have a hard time accepting the band when they try new things. Such is the case of this album. Yes, I agree, I wish the album had been music-only without the film dialogue, but that's no reason for your listening experience to be ruined. It's not half as big a deal as some people make it out to be. I don't recommend the album to Queen newbies or fans only familiar with their more popular material, but if you're a tried and true fan who wants to seen a little-known side of the rock legends, pick it up! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what it offers.
EDITION NOTES:
This album was reissued in the nineties by Hollywood Records. The reissued versions of the albums on Hollywood feature bonus tracks. These are usually nothing remarkable, being that they usually are just bland remixed, but occasionally you'll get a good little rarity like a B-Side or an alternate take. There are also slightly-expanded liner notes and lyrics. And since these compact discs are the readily-available versions of the albums in America, they're the obvious choice to buy.
