According to a Hollywood tradition that stretches all the way back to From Here to Eternity, there's never been anything quite so romantic as the idyllic days and hours before torpedo and dive bombers from the Japanese Imperial Navy blew the bejesus out of the unsuspecting U.S. fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor. Far be it for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay to, er, rock the boat. Just as Bruckheimer and Bay did with Armageddon (where romance blossomed in the idyllic days and hours before a Texas-sized asteroid threatened to blow the bejesus out of Earth itself), they've again turned to über-hitmaker Diane Warren to set the tone; as sung by Faith Hill, "There You'll Be" strikes the perfect balance of apocalyptic bathos, as instantly inviting--and ultimately hollow--as an 89-cent chocolate bunny. Composer Hans Zimmer fares a bit better, though his piano dirge and orchestral score occasionally get mired in the syrup as they build toward the inevitable. The action sequences themselves are somewhat subdued (especially by previous Zimmer standards), with "December 7th" even echoing Platoon and Barber's Adagio for Strings. Crucially, Zimmer evokes the tragic loss that goes hand in hand with heroism, often no mean feat in a modern computer-effects-laden, megabudget blockbuster-in-waiting. --Jerry McCulley

pearl harbor.......2007-05-23
I bought this CD for Faith Hills song and hoped the rest of it would be good also. For a movie like this, and an event like this, the music just doesn't fit. There should be some very big, building music here and there isn't. It could have been much better.
He needs to come up with some new ideas.......2006-08-27
Zimmer mostly just rehashes past themes from other films he's done, then throws in a track collaborated on with Faith Hill and some generic period-type music. Big deal. The film stunk and the uninspired score just had me thinking how much better the other films he's worked on were. Zimmer's better than this. The same can be said for most of the directors he usually works with. Perhaps it was just a paycheck to him...who knows.

Pearl Harbor / Hanz Zimmer Review.......2005-10-24
Hanz Zimmer has a gift for film scores. There is a familiar tone in all of his scores but each still manages to remain unique and beautiful. If you have seen the movie Pearl Harbor you know how the score heightens the drama and intensity of each scene. If you are a true film score fan, as I am, you relive the movie through the music.
This soundtrack is not as long and not quite as haunting as other Zimmer scores, such as The Last Samurai or Batman Begins, but it is beautiful and will not disappoint. If I had to mention a weak spot or flaw, it would be the first track, the Faith Hill song. She has a wonderful voice but the song is predictable and sounds like so many other average love ballads weighing down commercial radio today, with it's couple of versus, repetitive chorus, and swelling over done finish.
But otherwise, I would say, if you like the movie and are a film score fan you will like the Pearl Harbor soundtrack.
Surprise!!.......2005-04-03
Anything associated with this movie is grabage. James Horner is a joke. I can't believe I just wasted 10 seconds of my life writing this.

This is the one to get.......2005-10-17
If you don't own any Hornsby cd's, and you're reading the reviews to pick one, this is the one to get.
Here's the deal. I bought "The Way It Is" and "Scenes From The Southside" as soon as they came out and listened to them everyday until I knew them backwards! I was totally hooked. And I went and heard the band play live a bunch of times and totally freaked out. They are great albums for sure.
When "A Night on the Town" came out either I was going in a different way with my tastes, or it just wasn't as good. I listened to it a bit, but not nearly as intensely as the first two discs.
Then I lost track of Bruce.
A half a year or so ago I was on a gig with a bass player who said he keeps "Harbor Lights" in his car disc-changer at all times. So I thought it was time to give him another shot. I'm really glad I did.
While the previous albums were great, and had individual masterpieces on them, this cd is the complete package. It totally flows from track to track with NO WEAK TUNES. I think this really is the best thing he's done as far as having all the facets of a great album covered. The writing is great, the performances are great, the recording is great, the mood of the whole thing is perfect. THIS IS CLASSIC HORNSBY.
I think this is his highest achievement as a recording artist.
I've gotten a few of the more recent ones, and they have some nice stuff on them, but this one is THE Hornsby classic.
There are certain albums I can always count on. If I have a long trip in the car, I know I can totally groove (and be totally musically satisfied) with albums like Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly"; Joni Mitchell "Blue", Elton John's "Tumbleweed Connection", James Taylor's "Mudslide Slim and the Blue Horizon."
I'm proud to say that "Harbor Lights" makes it into my list of all-timers.
Hornsby Enters the Next Phase of His Career.......2005-02-04
When I put together a review, I normally try to mention something about the liner notes - positive or negative. In the case of Bruce Hornsby's "Harbor Lights", I think it's important to mention this at the beginning. The liner notes for this collection are simply outstanding and go a long way for helping you understand some of the new directions that Bruce takes for this particular collection. These liner notes do include lyrics, musician and production credits - all of which are important things. But, more importantly - there is a 2 panel write-up from Bruce himself that discusses some of the things he did differently. Bruce will give you his insight and context into each of the songs. This goes a long way into understanding this collection. With this particular review, I will try to add some additional perspectives on this collection and try to reference points that Bruce makes in his collection.
"Harbor Lights" marks the fourth album by Bruce Hornbsy. Hornsby pioneered something that has been called "The Virginia Sound". The best way I can describe this sound is a mixture of a lot of different genres of music: Jazz, Classical, Bluegrass, Rock, Country, and Pop. In the past, Hornsby incorporated a wide range of instruments in the songs to give this such a distinct sound: Mandolin, Guitar, Violin, Piano, and even Harmonica. On his first two albums ("The Way It Is" and "Scenes From the Southside"), if I had to pick a strong influence from those genres - I would probably lean toward Bluegrass. For his third album, "A Night On The Town", Hornsby began to emphasize Rock and to a lesser extent Jazz. For "Harbor Lights", Hornsby definitely turns things more toward the Jazz side.
Hornsby does a lot of other things differently as well. As Bruce indicates in the liner notes, this is his first album without his band - The Range. The lone holdover from The Range is drummer John Molo. Bruce also mentions that this is his first album where he took complete control of the Production Duties. He also mentions that this was recorded in his home studio in a very "loose" (i.e. jamming style session). One thing that Bruce doesn't mention is that most of the songs on this collection were written by Bruce and Bruce alone. On the previous three albums, Bruce's brother John would co-collaborate with Bruce on many of the tracks. On this collection, John only is credited with writing the words for 2 of the songs.
Usually when an artist decides to self-produce, work at home, and take on the majority of the songwriting - it sometimes proves to be too much. Phil Collins for his "Both Sides" album tried to make a true solo album in which he did everything (including play most of the instruments) and the end result reflects that it is too much. For "Harbor Lights", Bruce does enlist the help of some top musicians - the end result gives this collection a very good feel. The musicians included are Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis , Phil Collins (who at this time was working on the "Both Side" project), Bonnie Raitt, and Jerry Garcia. The inclusion of Metheny and Marsalis make sense. Metheny is a legendary guitarist whose Jazz-like style fits very nicely with the Jazz-like theme of "Harbor Lights". Metheny contributes some of this great guitar work on "Harbor Lights", "Talk of the Town", "China Doll", and "The Tide Will Rise". Marsalis also has experience in working in Jazz/Rock fusions. Bruce had done a song with him during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It was Marsalis' horn work that played a major role of Sting's Jazz-infused Rock album, "The Dream of the Blue Turtles". Marsalis contributes some outstanding horns on this collection to "Long Tall Cool One" and "Rainbow's Cadillac". Collins contributes both percussion and vocal work: "Talk of the Town" (bongos); "China Doll" (background vocals). Raitt's unique vocals are heard on "Rainbow's Cadillac" and "The Tide Will Rise". As for Jerry Garcia, he had started working with Bruce on "A Night on the Town". Bruce had actually worked with Garcia on some Grateful Dead Shows. Garcia contributes some nice guitar work "Passing Thru" and "Pastures of Plenty".
Hornsby's albums have always had some strong songwriting. His liner notes describe many of these songs beautifully. On previous works, we've seen sociological messages this on "The Way It Is", "Look At Any Window", and "Fire On the Cross". Hornsby is at no loss for this on this collection as "Talk of the Town" deals with an interracial marriage. Hornsby has always done a nice job at a "storytelling narrative" style in prior songs such as "The Road Not Taken" and "A Night on the Town". You'll hear this style on this collection on songs like "What a Time" and "Long Tall Cool One".
While the Virginia Sound might have switched directions, Bruce hasn't totally abandoned it. As Bruce says in the liner notes, the song "The Tide Will Rise" is about the Waterman of Virginia. You'll hear a bit of the classic style from his Range days on "What a Time" (i.e. a bluegrass spin). You will also hear some violin and viola on "Pastures of Plenty" - something that was more of a Hornsby staple in his earlier days. In fact, "Pastures of Plenty" really does a good job at the whole spirit of the Virginia Sound - the fusion of the many genres.
Same ol' Bruce Hornsby.......2004-01-02
I purchased this CD because I read a review stating that this is the freshest Bruce Hornsby yet.
Ho Hum... It's the same old thing. Sounds exactly like the old Bruce Hornsby and the Range stuff. I liked "Spider Fingers" much, much more.
Although I like Bruce, I think he needs to progress. This is the same ol' stuff.
Jazz-influenced pop that's an adult alternative to pop.......2003-12-30
Although both emerged from similar roots, the cross-pollination of rock and jazz is fairly limited. There's the heavy horns of 70s groups Chicago, Tower of Power, and Blood, Sweat and Tears; the cool jazz fusion of Steely Dan; and the modern mix-it-up hip-hop of Us3. The only other jazz-influenced rock artist to make much of a name for himself in the general public is Bruce Hornsby, who combines the better aspects of jazz-lounge piano (like Dave Grusin or Keith Jarrett) with the folk-rock sound of Jackson Brown and James Taylor.
After his debut with the massive hit, "The Way It Is" (from the album of the same name), Hornsby has released successive albums that build upon the formula that worked for him so well in that first single: a rock rhythm section with a standout piano that takes both the melodic part and also adds the gracenotes to the lyrical lines (think of how "The Way It Is" has the three-note-three-note touches after the line, then switches to taking on the full melody between chorus and verses).
For me, Hornsby's best album to date is not that first one, but 1993's Harbor Lights. The jazz solos are much longer, and stronger, than on previous releases ("China Doll"), while the folky lyrics of philosophical musings have a touch more poeticism ("Fields of Grey," "The Tide Will Rise"). The best songs, though, are the ones that reveal Hornsby's funky side, like the horn-laced chorus of "Rainbow's Cadillac" (complete with wonderful backing vocals by Bonnie Raitt) and the infectious rhythmic drum on "What a Time." My favorite song is "Talk of the Town," about a mixed-race couple in a small town told in the first person with a medium speed, yet driving drum track.
If your only exposure to Hornsby has been his 80s hits, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this album, by his increasing musicianship, and the maturity of his lyrics. This isn't teeny-bopper pop, but truly adult alternative music.
Classic Hornsby!.......2003-01-06
Harbor Lights will always go down as one of his best tracks (good nighttime summer song). Lots of jazzy sounding tunes on here, but Hornsby's sound still keeps pace. You also have Branford Marsalis, Phil Collins, and Bonnie Raitt on here. Couple of classics on here! Get it!

Pretty Good.......2006-07-29
This was a very unique item. Fans of the series will enjoy it. At times some of the tracks seem out of place when out of the game, but that's more than made up for by the many powerful and classic tracks that these CD's have. The first CD is more techno-inspired while the second is more operatic. It's good music to do push-ups to or to drive to. Especially the first track of the first CD.

An impressive debut album for Billy Joel...and much improved in the remastering!..........2007-04-07
As most Billy Joel fans probably know by now, his debut album "Cold Spring Harbor" was accidentally speeded up in the mastering process upon its' original release in 1971. However, in 1983, the album was re-released and remastered with some editing and additional recording. In my opinion, this re-release corrected all that was wrong with the original. Yes, the original was speeded up to make Billy sound like a chipmunk but there were other imperfections as well. "You Can Make Me Free" was a decent enough song, but for about the last two minutes Billy is screaming his head off and it gets a bit annoying. On the remastered version, the song is faded out just before all the screaming and I think the song shines much more without it! The song "Tomorrow Is Today" is one of the best on this album, but the original is way over-produced, with very heavy backup and lots of strings. The remastered version eliminates all the over-production, leaving just Billy's voice and piano...the way it SHOULD have been done in the first place! Usually, I don't like when original recordings are messed with...but being that this was Billy's debut album, it didn't quite live up to his later offerings. However, the remastering of this LP gave it a better sound and helps it to blend in more comfortably with the rest of Billy's catalogue.
Billy Joel's first studio album (released in 1971) and an absolute classic.......2007-02-26
Billy Joel's first studio album (released in 1971) and an absolute classic.
Includes such fantastic tracks as the tender She's Got A Way, the upbeat Everybody Loves You Now, the beautiful Why Judy Why, and the bluesy Tomorrow Is Today, as well as a taste of Joel's piano mastery with Nocturne.
Clear why this beautiful album launched Billy Joel's career.
an angry producer couldn't stop him...........2006-08-22
I'll give away my age here, but I can remember seeing Billy Joel at Lafayette's Music Room in Overton Square in Memphis in 1973 just as Piano Man went big. There was much controversy about Cold Spring Harbor because an upset producer had messed up the tapes so Billy's voice was at a higher speed on the original original release. Destiny had other ideas, and songs like She's Got a Way persevere no matter what someone might do. The pianistic ability evident in Everybody Loves You Now....the sheer songwriting ability evident in She's Got a Way...this is an album you will return to again and again no matter where or when you discovered the majestic artistry of Mr Billy Joel....
Deserves Better...........2006-07-26
Just thought I'd clear up a few things about this album.
First off, the original 1971 vinyl LP release of this album did have one major flaw due to a mastering goof, the songs were slightly too fast, resulting in Joel's voice sounding higher-pitched than it really is. In 1983, the album was re-mastered, re-mixed, re-tooled, and re-released on CD by producer Artie Ripp(who owned the original master tapes), without Joel's involvement or consent. While all this fiddling around did fix the tape speed, it removed much of the original orchestration and added drum machines and synthesizers to give it an updated feel (which also changed the whole sound and feel of the album).
Second, as of 2006, this is still the only version of the album readily available on CD. For as great of album this should be(the music itself is pretty good), the shoddy remastering really brings it down. While not up to the quality of his later albums, this fairly solid debut deserves to be released in a version that combines both the LP and CD (fixed tape speed, restored orchestration, removed cheesy 80s effects). Unfortunately, that looks like it may never happen.
Brilliant debut by Mr. Joel.......2006-02-02
Just wanted to stop and put my two cents in about this great debut by Billy Joel, but will try to return to give a longer fuller review in the near future. I can't believe I haven't listened to this beautiful album for over 8 years at least. I think I might even spin this disc in the next couple of days. I have about 2,000 compact discs, so it takes quite a while to get back around to play my favorite Billy Joel discs. I heard someone say that the first pressings on vinyl of Cold Spring Harbor were more basic and were of better quality (I had the mid 80's vinyl, and the late 80's compact disc incarnations), but I think the mid 80's remixing and added instruments and orchestrations probably made it a better recording, but I still would like to hear it on the first vinyl pressing, just for curiosities sake. This recording has a kind of dark melancholy to it, but it still touches my very soul, and can really lift me out of the doldrums. JUST A VERY MOVING ALBUM INDEED. My favorite songs are "Tomorrow is Today", "Nocturne", "Got to Begin Again", "You look so good to me", and "Falling of the Rain". This is definitely one of the greatest debut albums of all-time, and Billy bares his soul more than on any of his other recordings. Don't even think about hesitating, because you will definitely fall in love with this gem. Enjoy!!!

JUST PERFECTION!!.......2006-04-08
I have all of Dmitri's recordings and this is my favorite due to the quality of the songs, Dmitri's mastery of all of them and the really lush orchestrations. All of the songs are just gorgeous and his voice so beautiful that I listen to this all day at work on my portable CD player. I recently saw him in concert and purchased the DVD of the "War Songs" which were featured in the second half of his concert. Of course, I recommend the CD and the DVD as really stunning. However, if I could only listen to one of his CD's, this is my favorite. As a former singer who trained for 15 years, I can tell you that Dmitri's vocal technique is perfect, just perfect! The voice comes from heaven! Don't wait to get this one!
Hvorostovsky...........again, magic.......2006-02-14
Moscow Nights - This collection is emotionally draining, sad; the minor keys, the great poets and composers, an era unexpressed to Americans. It is a revelation, tended by one of the most beautiful of Russian voices. Listen to it in pieces, in a quiet space, and ponder. Dmitri commands an opera stage - two visits to Queen of Spades at the Met- can lead to no other conclusion. However, it is his quiet recollections of Russian folk music, Russian sacred music, and Soviet music that arouses his greatest talents. This is a recording to be treasured.
hvorostovsky does it again.......2005-05-01
This is the latest installment of the succesfull Hvorostosky/Orbelian collaboration. In "I met you my love" the spotlight was on the socalled Russian Romances, russian art songs of the 19e century. Then came " Where are you my brothers" a collection of Russian war songs. This title contains a collection of the best post war(50s&60s) songs. If you love melodious songs in minor key this is it.The selection is quiet varied and everybody will have his or her own favourites. For me there was'nt a redundant song. The singing is as always faultless and inspired, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra plays topnotch and the arrangments by Evgeny Stesyuk are as always beautifull. But be warned this cd can have a depressing effect because besides being beautifull this music is also mostly very moving. Buy if you love russian music and good musicianship you can't go wrong with this one.

Customer Reviews:
These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21
I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.
An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25
This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.
The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18
While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!
"many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26
Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.
Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.
The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.
We are grateful to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reybnold da Silva (executive producer), Rick Clark (associate producer/album sequence), Marion Garden (associate producer) and the whole gang at Silva America who have resurrected many of the soundtracks for the "film-score-buffs" in all of us.

Customer Reviews:
Dull Epics.......2006-09-27
EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.
Very Disappointing .......2006-09-27
EPICS is very disappointing. It is nowhere up to the usual standards of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The recordings are harsh and just too showy. There is no heart, only might and if these are supposed to be epics, what is MINORITY REPORT doing there?
Chilling versions of the best scores ever written.......2004-04-24
This cd is an essential for any person that particularly enjoys the score in films. Epics is a full length cd containing 14 songs performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under Erich Kunzel.
Usually, I am weary of cds that come out with songs from movies that aren't the original recordings, but I have to say there should be no worries with this cd. The songs remain exactly the same in tempo and sound as you hear them in the movies.
The choices for this cd was amazing. Every song that you hear are the songs that make the movie it is in, most often giving you chills and goosebumps as the music encompasses you into the movie (like what happened to me when I saw Lord of the Rings). From the Theme from 2001: a Space Oddysey to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones to Lord of the Rings, these songs are performed beautifully with a clear and crisp sound.
I am hoping for an Epics II to be released someday, but in the meantime, check this out, you will NOT be dissappointed!

A good album.......2006-12-28
A great America Classic album from 1977; I personally own all America's music and this album is definitely worth listening to however it is far from being their best. So buy it only if you are a hardcore America fan, otherwise try Hat Trick or America instead.
Their last album as a trio!.......2006-07-24
Recorded with a moble studio in Hawaii, which probably didn't help them keep their focus on recording. Still a very good album and their last album with the original line-up. The album was a modest hit in 1977 peaking at 21 on the US album chart, but pop music was being over-taken by disco and America was fading from the spotlight that they had enjoyed since 1972. Surprisingly none of the songs made a dent on the singles charts and none received much airplay. Best songs are God Of The Sun, Don't Cry Baby, Monster, and the rocker Hurricane. Bowing to commercial pressures the album does include a disco song, Slow Down. The album was produced by legendary Beatles producer, Sir George Martin.
