Gorgeous music, bad quality cd........2007-04-13

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

"We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. Dr. Frances Rausher sums up what I feel happening when I expose myself to this incredible composer (Mozart).

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

Mozart's music.......2005-10-17

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04

This may be the best money I've ever spent. I got 2-1/2 hours of bliss for less than what I'd usually pay for one CD -- and you know how it is with music. You buy an album because of a song or two that you love, and you find that you like maybe half the songs on it. There's not a single selection in this one that I would've left out. It includes Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by Pepe Romero on the guitar with the Acadamy of St. Martin in the Fields. I needed to replace my old LP recording of that. But I also get 30 other classical compositions and traditional Spanish pieces, each special in its own way.

Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.

I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.

Up until this collection, I'd never heard the "Cavatina" played in the Deer Hunter movie. After hearing it, I could play it all day and not tire of it! It moves me that much, considering that it's almost "not" a classical guitar selection. The rest of the music is first rate! Excellent playing, but the "Cavatina..."

Lives up to its Name!.......2005-06-10

If you only bought this double CD set, you'd have a good starter collection of classical guitar music. It includes most of the standards, as well as rarer pieces. In addition to the many solo pieces, there are several excerpts from orchestral works, with Rodrigo's indispensible Adagio from "Concierto de Aranjuez" topping the list. There are also several flamenco numbers included, complete with heel taps and castanets.

The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.

My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.

The "cool school" of guitar playing.......2006-10-26

This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.

A lot of music here for a low price.......2007-06-22

Your reaction to this set will depend alot on what you are looking for, and how much you're willing to spend, but at about 90 cents/disc, including shipping, this is a bargain! David Zinman's Zurich Tonhalle recordings of the Beethoven Symphonies will not be to all tastes: he's influenced by the 1990s period instrument movement in Beethoven: very fast tempos in Allegros, faster than normal Andante and Adagio movements, a lean string sound, no vibrato in violins, and some tempo shifts which will shock those used to the traditional approaches of Bruno Walter, Karl Bohm, Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, or Riccardo Muti. I call Zinman's Beethoven a cross between Norrington and Hogwood for tempos and Toscanini for lean textures... I prefer Bohm and Walter in the symphonies.

Zinman's tempos in the Overtures (2 discs) are more conventional, leaning to the fast side, but somehow seem easier for me to listen to than many of the symphonies.

Karl Rickenbacher conducts the Lithuanian Chamber Philharmonia in Beethoven's only full length ballet, "The Creatures of Prometheus" and it is a very good performance. I have also David Zinman/Rochester Philharmonic (New York) (Vox) for comparison, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (DG), and Rickenbacher does not pale in comparison with either of them. I had never heard of the Lithuanian Chamber Philharmonia, but they are an excellent ensemble, brilliantly recorded by RCA and re-released here.

Christian Tetzlaff is excellent in the Violin Concerto, and Yukio Yokoyama's Piano Sonatas are very fine, recorded in excellent Digital sound. Ormandy's Columbia "Christ on the Mount of Olives" is also very fine: it has been years since it's commercial release, and this release may be the first time on CD. Lorin Maazel's Vienna Philharmonic "Wellington's Victory" from the early 1980s is here, and the very slow opening sections become wearisome (inferior to Karajan/DG, or Ormandy/RCA, for example) but the battle sections and closing "Victory Symphony" are very well done with sensible tempos and really exciting playing by the great VPO.

You get 60 discs for about $50.00 - under $.90 per disc, so the price is very low, even if you don't like some of the recordings offered. You can always supplement better recordings of the Symphonies, Overtures, Piano Concertos, etc. for instance. But the sonatas are consistently very fine.
And, you get Pinchas Zukerman/Mark Neikrug in the Violin/Piano Sonatas, among the best recordings of these works!

I'd get this, and add Karl Bohm's recordings of the symphonies (DG),
Rubinstein/Leinsdorf in the Piano Concertos (RCA), Karajan/Berlin Phil. in the Overtures (DG, Galliera) and perhaps Kempff and Pollini for a different view of some of the Piano Sonatas (DG).

This is a decent offering of Sony and BMG's recordings from the Columbia, RCA and Arte Nova catalogs. I hope SonyBMG will have similar products/ editions of a single composer, and offer more of the Columbia Ormandy/Philadelphia recordings which have been long out of print to the public. I'm pleased with this, and would recommend it if you like bulk items: alot of music!, and bargains.

This is a very great chorus, and one of Haydn's best as far as i am concerned. The pace, grandness and spirit of the piece all conjure in one's imagination the majesty of heaven, and God's throne. I cannot help but be moved to praise the God of the heavens and the earth.

I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I mostly listen to rock and roll; but the way my uncle, and now I, play this thing, it is rock and roll from another era!!!

After Mr Shaw spent many years in NYC and Cleveland with RCA Red Label,he came into Atlanta for a big change! Soon he switched to TELARC DIGITAL! I still Joyfully remember our Recording of the Christmas Nativity in Dec of 1975! Sir Robert, conducting with earphones encasing his head shouted: "Stop the taping, there is some Darn Sizzling noise in those Lights!" We may have not heard the word "Damn" lights, that he employed at times!

On both this newer release of TELARC and the older Recording of The Christmas Nativity, there are Bach's Chorale, Break Forth, Dona Nobis Pacem from the B-Minor Mass, Handel's Hallelujah! Plus the exquisite, Shepherds's Farewell to the Holy Family of Berlioz's The Infant Christ!

Those who may not be familiar with Berlioz from both recordings, will be richly rewarded by hearing them plus the Rex Tremendae from Berlioz''s Requiem and the other Kyrie from the Bach B-Minor! Absolutely, no other Christmas Music can ever approach these two splendid recordings, which are the basis of the ASO celebrating every Christmas with "Robert Shaw in the Spirit!"

The way Chinese ensemble should be played.......2006-06-05

Except for the insertion of the cello which is obviously not a chinese trad instrument, the ensemble plays all pieces masterfully. Even with the cello the emotion of these chinese masterpieces are most beautifully performed on this cd. The sound quality is superb. I feel nauseated when listen to mixmatched traditional instruments with modern big sound westernized electrically special effected symphonized performance. There's places for improvisation and places for masterpieces. For oriental musics, art is a (only) way to express mood and emotion (culturally those people don't express their feelings in any other way). When listen to these musics I would suggest the listener let their feeling go with the music. Better yet if the story behind the music is understood. This is another aspect of the beauty of this cd, you could even feel the whole ensemble move as one unified sound from serene to excitement to lamentation to joy to sorrow to nostalgic to strength. Yet, true to its oriental tradition, each individual instrument clearly expresses its own beauty in each piece. It is not lounge music. It is not symphonic music. It is traditional chinese masterpiece.

ps. imagine people in asia would say the same thing about western symphonic music: that they are for elevator, oh no, elevator is not that popular in those poor third world countries so, they are for sleepy time :)

Frequency and Dynamic Range.......2004-05-12

If you prefer easy listening music or music with a minimum of high and low pitches and a minimum of loud and soft passages, much like music played in lounges, this album should please you. If you like Beethoven symphonies or Mingus jazz you would probably be happier with these albums: "Phases of the Moon"(full orchestra), "Classical Chinese Folk Music" or even "Music from the People's Republic".

I dissapointed in quality of album, songs too modern, not tradition enough. For real fan of chinese classical, sound not enough Chinese!!! Much song too westernized. You should like to try album of the title "Rain Dropping On The Banana Tree". It has the old songs actually record in old time, not much western influence, is more traditional opera and chamber music. Earliest date for song recorded on that album is 1903!!!!

Brought me back to my childhood.......2001-04-10

Those songs reminded me of my young schooling days sitting next to a musical hall, where beautiful trad Chinese music was practiced non-stop. Little did I know that those days influenced me well into my adulthood, was I lucky to have day dreamed away in my math class, being carried away with those fabulous musical pieces. Thank heavens.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

My first jazz concert was the Duke in 1968. I have since become a lover of most jazz forms, including big bands. This album is unique.

Duke's tonal pallette is varied, exotic and beautiful. The "colors" that he gets on this album are amazing. Listening to these arrangements is like walking through a huge mansion that you've never seen before. Each new room is a surprise, with some new beauty inside.

The interesting thing about these lengthy treatments is that he doesn't just repeat a part of a chart and let a new guy solo; each new section stands on its own and is designed to highlight a new soloist.

As great as the "concert length" arrangements of the old classics are, the highlight is "The Tatooed Bride". The solo work by Johnny Hodges, Russell Procope, and others is sensuous, and the arrangement is as good as it gets.

I have other Duke Ellington albums, but this is my favorite. The new LP format really does "unleash" the Duke and inspires him to a new pinnacle.

This album represents jazz at a pinnacle. Ellington's mastery over form and content is outstanding and the vocal's are just beautiful. Then of course you have the muscianship, this makes the performances perhaps some of the most wonderful to listen to in all jazz. The sound recording is perfectly clear and if you put on the headphones one can be transported to a time and place when the sound of music was truly something to behold, thus this is Jazz at its finest. Ellington was a genius and this recording displays it. Music to dance to music to relax to and music to be thrilled by! Simply a must for any music lover.

A Music Prophet Ahead Of His Time in 1950.......2005-06-05

Within are indeed Ellington masterpieces that altered musical history by stretching forth these classics into the totally new longer territory of the 33 1/3 LP taking advantage of the length and modernizing techniques now afforded him in the recording studio..moody,melancholy,laid back with the right energy sustaining the CD as a masterpiece the quality of Duke and his orchestra reworking these classics are timeless as was far ahead of it's time.
The shortest of the 4 initial cuts is over 8 minutes and the longest over 15 minutes.. combined with the 3 bonus tracks and lovely packaging this is indeed a great CD that is of historical importance. Solitude,Sophisticated Lady,Mood Indigo in longer orchestrated forms is truly a blessing as is the great music Duke gave us.

Pleasant re-issue of 1950 Ellington LP..........2004-08-12

Read the two prior reviews for details, and believe them when the writers say this CD is worth hearing and owning if you are a jazz fan in general or a lover of Duke in particular. However, I liked the 11-minute "Tattooed Bride" piece even better than the long treatments of Duke's '30's classic songs, "Mood Indigo", "Sophisticated Lady" and "Solitude." The three short bonus tracks, laid down in the same era, are also lively. Sound quality is excellent throughout. While the players varied slightly for the three minor tracks, Johnny Hodges is here on sax, Russell Procope on sax and clarinet, Paul Gonsalves on sax, and Billy Strayhorn as well as Duke on piano. Sonny Greer is the drummer for the original LP selections, and Louis Bellson for the bonus selections. Great songs, great players, great composer, great conductor, great remastering combine to make this one a winner.

Great work of a great master.......2004-07-02

This CD contains the best studio performance of "Mood Indigo" ever. I have more than 15 years of jazz listening experience, and I quite familiar with Duke Ellington's works, but i never realized that a big band can play with such a delicacy and absolutely magical musical touch. I purchased the CD yesterday, but I could not move on before I listened to the "Mood Indigo" 3 times. This is 15-minutes performance, but you just do not realize it when you listen to it. It seems like one-minute piece. I would buy the CD if it only had this one tune. The sound is fantastic - so clear and reach (which is not easy to find in Duke's catalogue)!The 3 following original tracks are excellent, but quite not the same as the first one. "Tattooed Bride" starts very promising with wonderful piano-bass-drums intro, but later it becomes a little too sharp and loud, but it may be just my first impression. Bonus tracks are very pleasant, especially first two.I would definitely recommend it to any jazz lover.

The music was very good but wish they had more to listen too. Not enough bang.

Great short Baroque piece collection.......2005-02-05

This CD has 17 pieces on 22 tracks including 7 by Handel, 2 each by Bach & Corelli, and 1 each by Pachelbel, Mouret, Albinoni, Gluck, Clarke, & Purcell. They are frequently the best known piece by the composer--and easily recognizable: Pachelbel's Canon, Mouret's Rondeau (theme from PBS' Masterpiece Theater), Albinoni's Adagio, etc. If you like high quality short pieces/excerpts, this CD is for you. My only qualification is: no Telemann, but it's just too good for a 4-star rating.

Excellent Baroque Collection.......2003-07-22

As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Casadesus, Isaac Stern and Rudolf Serkin among others. Here we get a variety of orchestras and conductors including big names like Jean-Claude Malgoire, Raymond Leppard, Pierre Boulez, Sir Charles Groves and the great Eugene Ormandy. This disc features excellent performances of what is arguably the most popular Baroque music ever written. I am not usually one to give five-star ratings to greatest-hits style collections (particularly in classical), but the half-dozen performances by Ormandy make this disc a great purchase for both novices and serious collectors.
