Handclaps a-plenty.......2005-04-25
I'd never heard of Hello until I was reading an article about Ace Frehley where it mentioned that "New York Groove" was a Hello song. So I took a chance and picked this collection up, and I'm glad I did!
This is sort of a cross between 10cc and Sweet. One thing that sort of amuses me is how many of these songs prominently feature handclaps in the production. But basically these guys had a good groove and tight arrangements of pop-rock confections. Nothing too flashy in the guitar or vocal chops, but the band as a whole demonstrate solid musicianship.
There are loads of really catchy tunes on here, but "New York Groove" is certainly the one most people know, even if they aren't aware that Ace Frehley didn't write it (actually, neither did Hello - quite a few of these songs were written for the band by professional songwriters). It's amazing how little Ace changed it - he even kept most of the guitar licks, and it's in the same key and tempo, although Ace did belt out the vocal with a bit more gusto.
They call this "glam rock" but it's just rock 'n' roll. Some campy, syrupy moments, but overall a great 70's rock album.

Long-overdue round up of all the singles that 10cc released on the U.K. Records label in the early '70s. Before they had a worldwide hit with 'I'm Not In Love', 10cc were proven hitmakers in England with singles like 'Rubber Bullets', 'Wall Street Shuffle', 'Donna' and 'The Dean And I'. With four extremely talented singer/songwriters in the band (Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme), their singles were always a cause for celebration. This compilation features the A-side and B-side of all seven singles released on U.K. label and is a joyful ride through the quirky career of early 10cc. 7Ts. 2007.

Get to it!.......2004-03-08
I'd never heard of the arrows until I found out that they were the first to perform "I Love Rock N Roll" I say that the original is always the best way to go, which isn't to say that Joan Jett didn't do a good job, but I like originals.

A Sampling of '70s Bowie.......2004-02-28
Vol. 1 of "The Singles" is hardly an all encompassing look at David Bowie's early work, but it's still a great set of tunes for someone that's unfamiliar with Ziggy/Aladdin Sane era David and looking for a good place to start.
Going album by album, "Space Oddity" is the only song taken by the album of the same name, which is probably appropriate. However, the complete omission of "The Man Who Sold the World" off of his second album is utterly disgraceful.
The artsy "Hunky Dory" and his landmark "Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust albums are both very well represented, with such classics as "Changes", "Life On Mars?", "Suffragette City", "Ziggy Stardust", and "Starman". Noticeable omissions would have to include: "Moonage Daydream" and "Lady Stardust". The only song taken from his forgettable "Pin Ups" album is "Sorrow", and this is definitely a good thing.
"The Jean Genie" and "Drive-In Saturday" represent "Aladdin Sane", although "Drive-In Saturday" should have been exchanged for the brilliant title track or even "Cracked Actor". The "Diamond Dogs" album also gives two excellent songs, including the title track and the androgenous rocker "Rebel Rebel". The most noticeable omission here is the Orwellian anthem "1984".
The "Young Americans" album provides its title track, and the Lennon co-written "Fame", and his "Station to Station" includees are the excellent dance track "Golden Years" and "TVC 15", with noteworthy exclusions including "Stay" and "Wild is the Wind". The album "Low" is also criminally underlooked, with "Sound and Vision" being its only inclusion.
Even for all that it lacks, this is still a solid album with lots of great Bowie tunes. For the casual fan this is definitely the way to go to get yourself an earful of early David. Loads of fun to listen to.
Bowie from 1969 to 1977.......2004-01-08
Although this not a comprehensive collection of Bowie's singles (the novelty UK hit The Laughing Gnome is missing, for example), the album does contain the crème de la crème of his early work, from 1969's Space Oddity to 1977's Sound And Vision. Tracks 2 to 5 come from those seminal albums Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust; my favorites are Changes and Starman. BTW, the magnificent Life On Mars should properly have been placed here, not as track number 9.
The Jean Genie from Aladdinsane is a tough little rocker, whilst Drive-In Saturday is a futuristic cabaret song. Sorrow is a beautiful interpretation of a 1960s pop song from his covers album Pin-Ups. Rebel Rebel and Diamond Dogs are further tight rock numbers with catchy hooks, whilst Fame and Young Americans are impressive examples of his plastic soul style in the mid 1970s.
The Station To Station album is represented by the ageless Golden Years and TVC15. I always though the poignant Word On A Wing would have been a better choice as single; on volume 2 the similarly soulful Wild Is The Wind has been included. This excellent compilation concludes with the atmospheric Sound And Vision from Low, the first of his trilogy of electronic experimental albums with Brian Eno.
Sound & Vision.......2001-09-16
The 70's is my favourite decade (The decade I was born) , and this album encapsulates the glory of these years .
It contains David Bowie's Greatest Hits from 1969 to 1977 .I apologize to anyone who may say that this or that hit is not included as I know Bowie brought out a lot of other great songs during this period .
But I think it would be fair to say that this album epitomizes David Bowies genius The poetry of the lyrics is brilliant-and the music astronomical .
It begins with that wonderful space fantasy Space Oddity (1969). Remember this was the year that Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon!
Changes (1972) outlines the strain of rapid change while pointing out its inevitability.
One can only hope change starts to take place in the right direction more often than the wrong direction!
We are then treated to another two extra terrestrial fantasies with the wonderful and sad story Starman (1972) and the funky tunes of Ziggy Stardust (1972) .
The wonderful disco funk of Suffragette City (1976) , and John , I'm Only Dancing (1972).
I just love the following three beautiful ballads: 'Drive In Saturday (1973),'Life on Mars' (1973) which is an incredible indictment of cardboard Hollywood culture and Sorrow (1973). Then there is the smashing hard rock hits: Rebel Rebel (1974), Rock & Roll Suicide (1974), Diamond Dogs (1974) and Knock on Wood (1974) which matches the Rolling Stones at their best. After that Bowie seems to have smoothly mad a slight transition from hard rock to cool funk with Young Americans (1975) (another social commentary), Fame (1975), Golden Years (1975), TVC 15 (1976) and one of my favourite favourites Sound & Vision (1977).
David, I'm Only Dancing.......2000-03-28
David Bowie is one of the most extraordinary talents of the music world. He has written some of the most beautiful songs inlcuding 'Changes', 'Life on Mars' and 'Heroes'. Yes, the man can put together a mean ballad, but he can also put together songs that will get you on your feet such as 'John, I'm Only Dancing' and 'Jean Jeanie'. This compilation is far better than Part 2 as it contains all the early stuff (as outline above)which was extremely good. He did have moments in his 80's career with songs like 'Modern Love' and 'Let's Dance' but they were few and far between. You'll find those tracks on Part 2 of the Singles collection. This compilation is the 'must have' of all Bowie compilations, and also features the previously hard to find 'Sound and Vision'. Get it now.
Bowie at his best.......2000-03-06
From the unforgettable Space Oditty to that new kind of music that was Sound & Vision, Bowie did so many different and wonderfull things, with rock songs like diamond dogs or Jean Genie, beautifull songs like sorrow & life on mars, amazing songs like golden years or the wonderfull young americans. And all is here!

Customer Reviews:
Very Worthwhile!.......2003-10-16
For a Bowie collection, this was pretty complete for its time (which was everything prior to the "Never Let me Down" album). As a point of fact, there are some songs here that make this a better set the "Best Of Bowie" double set from 2002! For instance, "John I'm Only Dancing" is here. And to make it even more attractive, many of the songs that got trimmed down to their single size are here in their full album splendor. The cover booklet also has excellent pictures and complete song lyrics. If you don't mind the sound quality of a 1993 issued CD, this is worth the purchase.
Bowie yeah yeah yeah yeah!.......2003-08-25
simply - best of bowie up to 1990...from late 60's to late 80's....all of Bowie's best songs ("Sound and vision","tvc 15","ziggy stardust","let's dance","fashion") on two discs.enjoyable and great mix of what is best in his career...it is good colelction because after 1990 he started to play Industrial-metal stuff (check out "earthlings" too) and that style would not fit into this album.
A must have double album!
David Bowie's best compilation.......2003-01-31
Lots of great songs here (37 in all). "The Singles Collection" from 1993 covers most of his major radio hits from the 1970's thru the early 90's (tho he really didn't do much in the early 90's). Bowie has so many albums to draw material from... that it's almost not fair to put his career 'only' on 2 cd's. There are many Bowie compilations... the most easily found are probably "ChangesBowie" from 1990, or 2002's "Best Of Bowie". Every song on "ChangesBowie" you will find on this "Singles Collection", so you won't need both. While "ChangesBowie" has only the major hits, the "Singles Collection" gives you the major hits plus another 19 songs - some major, some not. "Singles" grabs 2-3 songs each from his classic albums - "Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust", "Aladdin Sane", "Young Americans", "Heroes", "Station To Station", etc. How do you classify Bowie - he's touched on so many genres of music... from rock & pop, to glam, folk, new wave, electronica & dance, R&B, etc. Like every 'greatest hits' package, there will be hits & misses. There are a few Bowie tunes here that are subpar in my book ("Knock On Wood", "Beauty & The Beast", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Alabama Song" and "Wild Is The Wind")... and I feel there are several tunes that could have easily taken their place ("The Man Who Sold The World", "Moonage Daydream", "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)". "All The Young Dudes", Aladdin Sane's "Panic In Detroit" or "Watch That Man", "Time Will Crawl", Low's "Speed Of Life" or "Breaking Glass"). Bowie teamed up with Brian Eno on 3 albums and the one I really felt was unequalled was "Low"... and this "Singles Collection" only features one tune from "Low" ("Sound & Vision")... too bad. In the liner notes there are some nice pictures of David Bowie - past & present. The liner notes contain all the song lyrics and the producer of each song. It would have been great to know which albums these songs were taken from, the year they were recorded, and/or maybe some history or personal thoughts for each. While Bowie for me has always been an album experience, this collection serves as a wonderful place to start if you're just getting into the artist; or you just want some of his better stuff on 2 cd's. If you want to try any of his studio albums first, any of the above mentioned albums would work, especially the remastered versions of "Ziggy Stardust", "Aladdin Sane", or "Station To Station". ** Also - note that his friend Peter Gabriel took the cover photo.
HUUHHH???.......2002-10-28
I have not actually purchased this CD!perhaps it got caught-up in a situation where I may have saved it,considered buying it,so I can't really give review. However,I am fond of BOWIE'S music,so I am givin'it a "blind" 3-star rating. SORRY FOLKS.
Better Collection Than The Unavailable USA "Singles".......2002-08-24
Despite an unattractive cover, this collection is more available, cheaper and better than the original double CD that was readily available in the USA ten years ago. It includes all the essential hits from the 70's and 80's plus "Alabama" which was only available on one of Bowie's RYKO discs and Bowie's 3-CD Box Set from 1987. The 2nd disc is just different versions from the first disc, but at least you get a lot more of Bowie's great singles than the original "Singles". It is for the completist only OR for someone who only wants one set of Bowie songs to get on with thier life.

Probably the Best Bowie Collection.......2004-06-24
I do wonder about the future status of this great collection, which seems to be supplanted by the recent 2-disc "Best of Bowie". The new one seems interesting enough and contains much of the same material, but how can it be a "best-of-Bowie" without "Starman"? An egregious omission, to be sure. Of course, the other collection contains material of the last ten years (this one only gathers his works through 1993), but Bowie's essential work remains in the 1970's and 1980's. This collection of singles is a little frustrating at times, with truncated single versions of classics like "Space Oddity", but it is nonetheless a very satisfying collection and worth seeking out. Among the 150-odd "best-of" collections in my personal library, this remains one of my very favorites.
Fantastic Collection.......2004-02-28
I agree with the previous reviewer when he states that it's almost impossible to conceive how this fantastic 2 disc set is buried so deeply and is so hard to find. I'm not even sure of how much longer it's destined to stay in print, given the new 2 CD "Best of Bowie" that's been released this past year and includes a number of the same songs. That being said, this is a set that should be in your collection, and includes all of the songs on the "Vol. 1" and "Vol. 2" Singles collection in one set.
Even after one listen, you'll be amazed at how many of the Bowie songs here that you instantly recognize. It includes almost all of his hits from 1969's Space Oddity up through "Black Tie White Noise" circa 1992?ish. Where else can you snag hits like "Ziggy Stadust", "Suffragette City", "Space Oddity", "Changes", "Life on Mars?", "Heroes", "Sound and Vision", "Rebel Rebel", "Fame", "Young Americans", "Look Back in Anger", "Golden Years", "Ashes to Ashes", "China Girl", "Modern Love", "Blue Jean", "Under Pressure", "Let's Dance", "Never Let Me Down", and "Jump They Say" in one collection? The only true stinker here is the Bowie/Mick Jagger duet "Dancing in the Streets" *shudders*, but other than that, everything is amazing.
In conclusion, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of "The Singles" while you can, because it's the best 1-shot David Bowie fix available. Enjoy.
Why is this superb compilation buried so deep?.......2003-11-13
It's tough to figure out why this superb two-CD release is buried so deep within the bowels of amazon.com's database. I figured it would pop to the top of Bowie's stuff on a generic search, replete with hundreds of reviews. And yet...here it sits with "no image available," two posted reviews to date, a rank of 72,000+ and some confusion vs. similarly-named imports (which further muddle the situation with staggered Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 releases).
That's all a shame, because Bowie's 'Singles Collection' is nothing short of fabulous. And, as other reviewers have pointed out, even though it's not obvious from the slim info provided on this page, you get *all* the Vol. 1 and 2 hits wrapped into a single package.
Bowie's career has been a spectacular series of imaginative re-invention...of both his music and himself. Throughout all that, he's never lost his relevancy, his musicianship, or his integrity. Compare that to other long-time acts: The Stones staying power is impressive, but you can make a case that their musicianship has been in a tailspin since Mick Taylor left in 1975 (okay, one man's opinion); Madonna's re-re-re-invention of herself seems calculated and attracts derision (the acquired British accent ended it for me, even though I was a fan through 'Ray of Light'). There are countless others who lost their relevancy and simply faded away.
The thing that will strike you listening to this compilation is the sheer number of Bowie tunes that have been seared into our collective consciousness. It's a staggering lifetime achievement.
Classic Bowie.......2002-09-24
Maybe you are like me, you first fell in love with David in Labyrinth and loved the music. David's music is a little different then Labyrinth. This music is great, classic rock 'n' roll Bowie. There are songs like "China Girl" and "Ziggy Stardust" that have a bit of a poppy clang to them. Then there are songs like "Rock 'N' Roll Sucicide" and "Starman" that have more depth. All in all I love David Bowie's music. If your new to Bowie's music this cd is a must. Classic Bowie for sure
Both Volumes Of Singles 1 And 2!.......2002-08-20
Forget about buying "Singles, Vol.1 " and "Singles, Vol. 2". This has both CD's and all the same songs for a cheaper price. Yup - all the same songs. It's a mystery why this is so hard to find, as the original double disc sold so well.
