5 out of 5 stars Great but Still Wanted More.......2007-06-27

First, I do not like the cover. But beyond that, the CD is great fun to listen to. John Denver had so many hits, that this doesn't cover all of them by any means, but it is a great CD to take you back to a more peaceful time musically. It makes me want to bring out my guitar and play along.

5 out of 5 stars TRUELY a song's best friend!.......2007-05-28

what else can i say? at 36, and i grew up in a strictly religious household, so i missed him growing up, but i got spots going into public places & whatnot. i remember a vacation while young in the WV woods when one of his most popular songs was on the radio & i memorized it the first time i heard it and sung it to myself time and time again, while walking through the woods or horse back riding- just enjoying nature. he has a way of giving you nature and the beauty of it in a song. God gave us such as one as him so we could stop and remember the beauty of all that is around us all the time.

This must be the best John Denver of all, it has the lot

5 out of 5 stars All of John Denver's Greatest Hits.......2007-05-23

John Denver passed away in October, 1997 while piloting a small airplane. Before that, he left an indelible mark on the pop music industry. By combining harmonic vocals with a recognizable acoustic sound, John's music still remains popular with fans of all ages.

From the autobiographical "Rocky Mountain High" to the melodic and uplifting "Calypso", this collection contains many of John's most famous songs. Other selections include "Annie"; a song John wrote for his wife, "Take me Home, Country Roads", and "Thank God I'm a Country Boy".

I wasn't a big fan of John Denver before I bought this CD, but I really enjoy listening to his music now. This is the perfect disc for the casual fan, because all of his most popular hits are on it; there's no need to buy several other discs to get them.

I give this great collection my highest recommendation. If you're a major fan or just a casual fan, then this is the CD you'll want to own.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Through the years originals?.......2007-07-13

Just my two cents on this. I grew up listening to Neil Sedaka and his other contemporaries. I have to clarify that I'm writing this mostly cause I hate re-recordings. They tend to hi-jack the true spirit of the music as we knew it.
Whenever any performer have endurance throughout the decades, you can't expect a definitive compilation may include all the original recordings, mostly due to label changes. Rhino are the only guys (and I don't own any financial association with them) that have been offering this, as they pay royalties for gathering original takes from different record labels. That makes it clear: you got to pay a little more for "real definitive compilations".

5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS BECAUSE MY HUSBAND SAID SO.......2007-07-04

I bought this CD for my husband because he enjoyed playing old Sedaka record albums - but you can't take albums for a ride in the car. He loves the CD, all the oldies, and was surprised to find new recordings as well. He says he especially loves the song Sedaka sings with his daughter (Should Have Never Let You Go). I honestly like hearing him play the CD and am enjoying it along with him. As for any criticism that several of these songs are re-recordings...well, yes, but I knew that from reading the reviews. I bought it anyway, and my husband is happy I did. No disappointment here.

5 out of 5 stars Great Memories with Neil!.......2007-06-27

Neil Sedaka has always been a favorite performer of mine and this latest CD just reaffirms it. The memories of such old standards as Oh Carol, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Calendar Girl and the dynamite duet with his daughter Dara just prove that this guy and his classics are timeless. Highly recommend for anyone who appreciates great music from a less-complicated time and less hectic world.

3 out of 5 stars All kneel to the great Neil!.......2007-06-26

Fluffy, catchy pop songs often the target of harsh criticism, because, well, they're simple, easy to remember, and melodic through and through. Such is the perfect recipie for hits and recognition as one of Americas greatest writers. Neil Sedaka's inarguable talent is evident on this collection, and anyone with an ear for melody and top notch writing will be delighted with it, while completists and purists may feel ripped-off.

While far from "definitive", the disc effectively showcases Neil's consistency and gift of melody. It's a gift he uses to full effect on classics like Oh Carol, Breaking up is hard to do, and many others. The nice surprise on this disc was a song I had never heard before, anywhere. The track is called "You", a love song brimming with heartfelt lyrics and emotion. It actually sounds like a number from a broadway musical if you excise the cheesy synthesizer and replace it with a real string orchestra. It's drop-dead gorgeous writing from Mr. Sedaka!

Many buyers of this disc people are dissatisfied with the re-recordings of the early hits, and quite frankly, I expected the original versions since there is no disclaimer on the packaging. What I do appreciate about the new versions is the sound quality, and Neil's faithful interpretation of songs that fomented his carreer as a solo performer.

There are some 70's hits missing like "That's where the music takes me", but overall this collection is okay. I also appreciate the great digital remastering of the 70's recordings on this disc.

I can't give this cd a perfect score because of the deception regarding the early hits and the missing 70's hits. It's just okay. I give this collection 3 stars...but Neil always gets 5 stars!

3 out of 5 stars Bring Old and New Together Next Time.......2007-06-15

As others have stated, "definitive" does not mean 1991 songs instead of those recorded in the early 60s. Listening to the new versions was almost like hearing Sedaka do karaoke of his own music. It's not that they were bad but I just really wanted the original songs in a package labeled as "definitive."

All that being said, I do enjoy the CD. I don't buy that many CDs nowadays as I either download (legally) the music or listen to the songs I already own. However, I watched him perform on The View and immediately purchased the CD. I don't think there were any reviews up at the time or I would have hesitated at the re-recording alerts posted. Yet the CD still holds up.

I loved hearing the old 70s classics "Laughter in the Rain," "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" and "Bad Blood" (which I didn't care much for in '75 but it sounds a lot better in '07).

The clunker? "Love Will Keep Us Together." The Captain and Tennille do it much better, although without Neil, the song wouldn't actually exist.

I also liked his version of "Where The Boys Are." That was a real treat.

5 out of 5 stars Patsy is timeless!!!!.......2007-05-12

Whether you are country or not this is an excellent CD!!! Patsy Cline is one of the great classics of all times!!! Great selections on this CD!!! Definately Definitive!!!! Worth owning and listening to!!!

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!.......2007-01-17

This collection is "wonderful". Also, try to see the live show, "Always....Patsy Cline" when it comes to your area. The show is much more than just singing as a "fan" tells the story of her supposed "involvment" with Patsy. Both this CD and the show are "the greatest!"

5 out of 5 stars This is a great collection!.......2006-11-10

I looked for awhile to find a colllection that included almost all the songs I remembered from my younger days. This CD pretty well does that. I have heard a lot of imitators over the years, but no one has come very close to her great style and sound.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Collection.......2006-08-30

This is a terrific collection with a wide range of songs from one of the most spectacular voices the music industry has ever heard. Patsy Cline's gorgeous voice and the emotion she put into her songs makes them heartbreaking to listen to, or if an upbeat song, especially fun to listen to. She just can't be topped. I only wish there were a Patsy Cline Christmas album available. I highly recommend this CD to any Patsy Cline or country music fan. Great selection of hit songs!

3 out of 5 stars What a voice........2006-07-30

I just love listening to this old style of music. Patsy Cline has such a pure tone to her voice. I have to remind myself that even though some of these subjects are a little degrading to women it was a different era and it's the lady's voice that I love. I experienced some volume fading and getting louder in few of the songs. But, that's my only complaint.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What a compilation! Definitive indeed!.......2007-06-22

The title of this CD represents a tall order to fill. With a title like "The Definitive Collection" of one of the key progenitors of rock and roll, one expects a great deal. This CD delivers. The liner notes begin by stating that "Chuck Berry cooked up the basic recipe for rock n' roll." Berry was made a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, as one of the very first members--and justifiably so. As the notes continue, ". . .it was Berry who set the template for the songwriter-artist. . ."

Some of the major cuts:

"Maybellene" was recorded in 1955, one of his first major hits. Talk about class: Willie Dixon played bass. The thumping rhythm and driving rock beat makes this a quintessential Chuck Berry song. This song reached # 5 on the Pop Chart, making Berry a recognizable figure.

In 1956, "Roll Over Beethoven" Another great rocker: "Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news." An infectious beat and driving singing.

"Up in the mornin' and off to School,
Teacher teachin' the golden rule."

So "School Day" goes, with the expectation of a lot more fun once the School Day is done.

"Rock and Roll Music" (1957) has the estimable Willie Dixon and Fred Below supporting Berry. Another rollicking early rock song that set the stage for what was to follow.

More greats from 1957--"Sweet Little Sixteen," a teaser of a song with a compelling pace; also from 1957, one of the greatest rock songs ever--"Johnnie B. Goode." "Go, Johnnie, go, go."

A number of these songs were covered by the "British invasion." British groups, such as the Rolling Stones and Beatles, covered such songs as: "Roll over Beethoven," "Little Queenie," "Come on," and so on.

This CD contains 30 of Chuck Berry's greatest hits, from "Maybellene" to "My Ding-a-Ling." If anyone is unfamiliar with Berry's oeuvre, this is a great place to start. For those who appreciate his role in rock and roll, this is a good addition, to pull together some of his best works. A good compilation. . . .

5 out of 5 stars chuck berry the definitive collection.......2007-05-07

4 out of 5 stars Good looking back.......2007-04-11

Chuck Berry is one of my old favorites. I danced to his music when I was a teenager. This CD contained many of my favorites from back in the day such as Johnnie B. Goode and Almost Grown. Also, some of his less known music was introduced. Havanna Moon was a surprising musical treat.

4 out of 5 stars For the casual listener..........2007-04-03

...you won't find a package to beat this one. An inexpensive selection of Berry's biggest numbers. Definitely not "definitive" by any stretch, but a great record to throw in for a quick shot of one of the most important figures in rock/rhythm & blues history. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "...Tidewater four-ten-oh-nine...".......2007-03-18

I saw Dennis Miller on "The Tonight Show" one time and he said, "what planet are Brando and the Beatles from and why can't we find it?" I feel the same way about Chuck Berry. I guess it would be hard to explain to a Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears fan, but if you are a fan of good ol' rootsy, r&b influenced rock n' roll, you know in your soul that Chuck Berry is the savant.

How can a guy come up with those riffs? Those simple, yet poetic lyrics? One of his rivals was the output of the Brill Building writers, but that was a group of enlightened kids (influenced by Berry, among others) feeding off of each others energy and ideas. Maybe the closest "rival" was Buddy Holly. Here is a poor guy from St. Louis who even pushed Presley, not to mention how he (along with Holly) inspired the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

Bottom line: great sound, finally a great single disc overview of one of the greatest musical minds since 1950 and certainly one of the "Dead Sea Scrolls" if you are looking for the genesis of rock n'roll.

One of the must-own soul albums, Greatest Hits is fattened with extra tracks in this reissue for a total of 21 songs. Al Green brought the Memphis Sound into the '70s by slightly softening it, melding smooth funkiness with his miraculous voice and innate sensitivity: his love songs, while perfect for the bedroom, are as conversational as they are blatantly seductive. By adding the likes of "Belle," a 1977 single that's a near-goodbye to the pop life, to the original lineup of "Let's Stay Together," "Look What You Done for Me," "Call Me," and the others, this edition of Greatest Hits also intriguingly fills out the story. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Reminisce on Days Gone By.......2007-05-14

This compilation of hits, took me back to the days of yesteryear, when I was a little girl, in NE DC. My Childhood was a good time and there was always good music. Music that made you happy, music that identified, with whatever you were going through, and Al Green was a staple in my family's component set. To hear his smooth, melodic voice again, transports me back to those days and makes me reminisce on those days long gone.

3 out of 5 stars Al Green Greatist Hits.......2007-03-09

About half of the CD was good to listen to. I mostly bought it for the song, "Let's Stay Together".

2 out of 5 stars One saving grace..........2007-02-22

First thing's first: Whatever you do, don't buy the original version of this Greatest Hits album. They heartbreakingly cut off the climax of Let's Get Married and didn't bother including Take Me To The River. That aside...while an improvement over the shameful original issue of this package, the compilation still falls short! Where's For The Good Times? Where the heck is How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?? Any Al Green collection that doesn't include both, not to mention even one of, Al's most compelling and beautiful slow numbers is INCOMPLETE! Instead, they put relatively obscure songs on here like Keep Me Cryin' and Oh Me, Oh My. Do these compilers even listen to Al Green? It would be worth it to borrow or steal this, if only for the DVD live performance of Love And Happiness in 1978. It captures Al in top form in Chicago with excellent clarity and camera work. Do yourself a favor and buy the Motown Compact Command Performances, which includes all the truely essential tunes with a better track order. Then buy Let's Stay Together and I'm Still In Love With You.

5 out of 5 stars Long overdue anthology of one of the great artists of the 1970's........2007-02-20

As decades go the 1970's was never among my favorites. I have always felt that save for a handful of artists the music of that decade left an awful lot to be desired. For about three and a half years in the early part of that decade, Al Green and his producer Willie Mitchell collaborated on some of the finest and most memorable soul records ever made. Finally, Capitol records has seen fit to do justice to the music of this extremely important American artist. "Al Green: The Definitive Greatest Hits" features 21 of the finest recordings spanning Al Green's entire career. By any standard this disc truly should be considered essential to any serious collection of American popular music.
What seperates "Al Green: The Definite Greatest Hits" from previous anthologies is that it offers selections spanning the entire length and breadth of Al Green's remarkable recording career. Of course this disc includes all 7 of Al's Top Ten tunes from the early 70's including "Look What You Done For Me", "I'm Still In Love With You", the #1 smash "Let's Stay Together" as well as my personal favorite "You Ought To Be With Me" from 1972. Add to these other great hits like "L-O-V-E (Love)", "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" and Al's first big Hi records hit "Tired of Being Alone" and you will quickly understand why Al Green is such an important American recording artist. One of the things that really impressed me about this collection is that Capitol chose to include Al Green's very first chart record from 1967. At that time, his name was Al Greene. His backup group was the Soul Mates. Al released "Back Up Train" on his own label and you can clearly hear why Al Green was destined to become a major star. In 1976, Al Green decided he wanted to pursue a career in gospel music. This change in musical direction would cause Al and his long-time producer Willie Mitchell to part company. His final charted record at Hi would be a tune called "Belle". The gospel influence on this tune is quite apparent. I had never heard it before and I must tell you that I absolutely loved it. Shortly thereafter, Al Green would leave the music business altogether to become a full-time minister in Memphis. In 2002, Al Green and Willie Mitchell decided that they wanted to make music together again. They would record in the very same studio in Memphis where they had made magic and history in the early 1970's. As an added treat, Capitol has chosen to add a pair of these new tunes to this collection. As you will see, Al Green has not lost it one little bit!
"Al Green: The Definitive Greatest Hits" includes a thoughtful 12 page booket that features some marvelous photos and very informative biographical information. I had completely forgotten that Al Green had a hand in writing virtually all of his hit singles! His was Southern Soul at it's absolute best! It is also worth mentioning that the remastering job is first rate. As I recall, the fidelity on those old Hi 45's was never the best. So whether you are a life-long fan or a younger person just interested in sampling this music then "The Definitive Greatest Hits" would certainly be a great choice. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars So sweet.......2007-02-17

If you want romance in your music this is the quintessential cd. It is Al Greens early works that put him in my heart oh so many years ago. Truly beautiful and romantic. Listen with someone you love and you will have Valentines Day all year round.

5 out of 5 stars more greats from a one of a kind man.......2007-07-04

This is another great CD of hits by Tom T. Hall. Two days ago, I got to hear him on XM radio, interviewed by Bill Anderson, and a couple of songs from this album were mentioned. He mentioned not being allowed to sing "I Love," on network TV, because one of the things he loves is, grass. The Tv censor took "Grass," to mean pot. Any fan of Tom T. Hall knows that would be the furthest thing from his mind when he mentioned grass. He was of the generation which, if he wanted to alter his mind, would do it with beer. see "I like Beer." "Deal," "Fox on the Run," and "Old Side of Town," were totally new to me when I got this, and I love them all. "Old Side of Town," sounds like a George Jones song. "Homecoming," was first offered to Bill Anderson himself, who passed on it, letting Tom T. take it into orbit. just some of the good stuff on this excellent CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great sampling of a great talent!.......2007-06-09

This CD truly demonstrates the ultimate talent of Tom T. Hall! A little known fun song is on it "That Song is Driving Me Crazy" that for me sealed the deal on buying this CD. All the music is pure Tom T. Hall and will hook you on him forever. I grew up in the south, and have fond memories of a number of the songs on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars For Tom T. Hall Fans.......2007-02-06

This is classic Tom T. Hall. Highly recommended. Tom T. is a master story teller in song.

5 out of 5 stars Country music storyteller.......2006-11-16

Please note that this is a re-issue of an earlier compliation (Ultimate collection) with a different title and packaging but an identical track listing.

Tom wrote and recorded songs that told stories - little vignettes of everyday life. Other country singers did this too, but only as a part of what they did. For Tom, story songs were what mattered. You want typical love songs? Look elsewhere. Yes, Tom sometimes sang about love but, like everything else, he told it in a story.

This collection includes all his country top ten hits plus his own recording of Harper Valley PTA, a song that he wrote but which became a huge international hit for Jeannie C Riley. Her version, which sold over four million copies, topped the American charts but didn't quite make the top ten in the UK.

Among Tom's classics here are Old dogs children and watermelon wine (my favorite), Faster horses, I like beer, Ballad of forty dollars, I love, Country is, That song is driving me crazy and The year that Clayton Delaney died.

Conspicuous by their absence are Sneaky snake and One hundred children. They may not have reached the country top ten but they are among his best songs and certainly better known than some of the songs that are included here. Still, I've yet to see a compilation that includes all Tom's classic songs. Other compilations that include those two miss out other classics - and that includes the double CD boxed set, which (as I said in my review of it) could so easily have been a triple CD with no drop in quality. Dedicated fans can at least get all the classics by buying different compilations, though that means a lot of duplication. If you are such a fan, you may be better to start with the box, then add Greatest hits 2 and one of the RCA compilations, then see what else you want.

If you only want one CD of Tom's music, this is the one to buy despite the absence of two classics. If you enjoy it as much as I do, you can always buy more of his music another time.

5 out of 5 stars Repackaged version of Hall's Ultimate Collection from 2001.......2006-07-29

The most underrated singer-songwriter of the `70's, Tom T. Hall's best sides play out with remarkable freshness on this twenty-four song compilation. Boasting booklet notes by Colin Escott, the set smartly spotlights the Kentuckian's narrative gifts, commercial rise, and fall.

Literate and folkie, Hall's early Mercury recordings were often inspired by real life events. Produced by Jerry Kennedy, the earliest hits - "Ballad of Forty Dollars," "A Week in a County Jail," and "Salute to a Switchblade Knife" - sound similar to his work with Roger Miller. These sardonic sides, along with such classics as "Homecoming," "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died," and "Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine," still conjure wry poignancy.

Hall embraced country radio by mixing barfly sing-a-longs "That Song is Driving Me Crazy" and "I Like Beer" with kid-friendly ditties ala "I Love" and "I Care." Yet, he also boldly experimented with his basic sound. Examples? "Ravishing Ruby" employed Mexican xylophone long before Jimmy Buffet did, and "Fox on the Run"was a rare commercial blow for bluegrass.

At his commercial peak, Hall left Mercury for RCA, where the enclosed hits "What Have You Got to Lose" and "The Old Side of Town" demonstrate an artist whose work had become merely product. A return to Mercury yielded a popular remake of Rudy Vallee's "P.S. I Love You" (the final track found here) before his star completely faded.

Although it omits interesting lesser hits, this crisp sounding collection is a strong retrospective of a great singer-songwriter. It is a repackaged version of Hall's Ultimate Collection that was put out in 2001.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Collection-The Statler Brothers.......2007-03-09

I was very pleased with both the product, and the service.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection!.......2005-08-28

As with any legendary artist compilation, not every top ten hit is here. But this is the best comprehensive career cd I have seen, aside from the box set. I liked that hits from the late 1980s were included, especially "More Than A Name On a Wall."

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding anthology of one of Americas great vocal groups .......2005-04-23

At long last, Mercury Records has seen fit to release a pretty comprehensive single disc anthology of one of America's all-time favorite groups. From the very beginning the Statler Brothers did it their way. In an era when many artists found it necessary to poke fun at the values and institutions that many Americans hold near and dear the Statler Brothers were a welcome alternative. They sang songs that told a story and the stories were often about our heroes, the communities where we live and work, the loves of our lives and cherished memories of days gone by. Some might find that a bit corny but the Statler Brothers struck a chord with many of us and were a consistent force in American popular music for nearly four decades.
Released in April 2005, "The Definitive Collection" features 25 of the Statler Brothers biggest and most memorable hit records.
The remastering job is first rate and I was very pleased to discover that the original Columbia recording of the Lew Dewitt penned "Flowers On The Wall", the groups first big hit from 1965, is included here. I also enjoyed the newly remastered versions of the early '70s hits "Do You Remember These?" and "Class of '57". It was these two records that turned me on to the group and made me a fan for life. While perusing the 12 page booklet you might be surprised to learn that with the exception of a handful of "oldies but goodies" that the group decided to cover, just about all of the other tunes were written by members of the group. Enjoy Don Reid's handiwork on "Bed of Roses", "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You" and the 1984 smash "Atlanta Blue". Don and Harold Reid collaborated on a number of hits including "I'll Be The One", "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine?" as well as the aforementioned "Do You Remember These?" When long time member Lew Dewitt was forced to retire with painful Krohn's disease in 1982, the group tapped 25 year old Jimmy Fortune to fill the void. It was a stroke of genius! Jimmy was not only a talented vocalist, he was also a gifted and prolific songwriter. In fact, several of the Statlers' biggest tunes were penned by Jimmy including "Elizabeth", "My Only Love", "Too Much On My Heart" and the moving "More Than A Name On A Wall" from 1989.
In the final analysis reviewer PD Harris is correct. This is "not quite a definitive" collection. After all, the group had a total of 66 charted hits on Billboard's "Top Country Singles" chart. At least 10-12 of their Top 10 hits are not included here. But I am not going to quibble about it. Those who desire more can always grab the 3 disc "30th Anniversary" box set. It seems to me that "The Definitive Collection" is the right choice for most collectors and fans of the group. The music is timeless and eternally uplifting. Very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Not quite definitive but a fine collection.......2005-04-19

The line-up of the Statler brothers was Harold Reid, Lew DeWitt, Phil Balsley and Don Reid (Harold's brother) when they cut their first record, and the only line-up change since then was when Lew had to withdraw in 1982 because of vocal problems as a result of being a long-term sufferer of Crohn's disease. Jimmy Fortune replaced him. Very few groups in any genre of popular music remain as stable over such a period of time, although there have been others - the Four Tops stayed together for over 40 years.

This collection is presented in chronological order and includes some of their finest recordings. I notice that over half of the tracks are from the Jimmy Fortune era. As most of my favorites are from the Lew DeWitt era, I would have compiled it differently. Notable omissions from the Lew DeWitt era are Silver medals and sweet memories, Whatever happened to Randolph Scott?, Carry me back and Susan when she tried (a song that Elvis Presley covered) - and that's just a few of them. It must have been hard for the compilers to select just twenty-five songs to fit on a single CD.

The Jimmy Fortune era is (as I explained) well represented and includes classic songs such as Elizabeth, Too much on my heart and More than just a name on the wall.

The Statlers sang about a variety of things, but nostalgia was one of their trademarks. Normally, when singers want to go back in time, they record covers of songs from the era they want to remember. The Statlers adopted a different approach - they wrote new songs about the old days - and about old movies. Good examples include The class of '57 (about the people they went to school with, and what happened to them) and Do you remember these?

The Statlers recorded other types of song too, including love songs and gospel songs - but whatever they chose to sing, their quartet harmony singing remains one of the most recognisable sounds in country music history, so even their cover versions sound distinctive - listen to their version of Hello Mary Lou.

The set opens with Flowers on the wall, the song that provided them with their first success way back in the sixties. It even became a minor UK hit, something they were unable to repeat although they might have done if the UK division of Mercury had made an effort.

Although this is a fine collection, I recommend saving a bit more money and buying the 30th anniversary box set instead. It omits three of the tracks here (Thank God I've got you, I was there, You'll be back every night in my dreams) but includes forty other tracks and an impressive booklet. Now THAT is the definitive collection.

5 out of 5 stars Grade-A, classic, killer country.......2005-08-20

A fine, 25-song best-of that overlaps with other Loretta collections (including a few duets with Conway Twitty...) "Definitive" is definitely a relative term, here, especially considering how thorough and gratifying the old, 4-CD "Honky Tonk Girl" box set has proven over the years. Still, this is a great introduction to her work, and dips into some of her later work from 1975-onwards, stuff that doesn't readily come to mind when you're thinking of Loretta's glory years, but that still holds up nicely today. They seem to have omitted her novelty hit, "Your Squaw Is On The Warpath" (presumably because of modern-day PC concerns...) but the rest of the songs on here are of at least equal calibre to that old chestnut. Other Loretta best-ofs may serve you equally well, but this disc is unquestionably first-class.

5 out of 5 stars The best single CD of Loretta's hits.......2005-07-14

Note - this compilation is a re-issue and re-packaging of an earlier compilation (All-time greatest hits) with three additional tracks - Blue Kentucky girl, You're looking at country and The pill. This compilation has a higher price so if you're choosing between the two, your decision will be based on the value you place on those three tracks.

At the start of the sixties, female singers had a really hard tine getting noticed, except Patsy Cline. Loretta (along with Dolly and Tammy) helped to change this forever, by recording songs that appealed to women as well as men. While men (including myself) can sometimes be satisfied with women singing love songs, Loretta recorded some hard-hitting songs about life and its struggles.

Examples of her diverse themes include her heritage (Coal miners' daughter), fending off other women (You ain't woman enough, Woman of the world, Fist city), everyday life (One's on the way) and the evil of drinking too much (Don't come home a-drinking). All these songs can be found on this collection. Of course, she sings love songs too and plenty of those are included on this set, although these are not what Loretta is best remembered for. Among the love songs here is a cover of She's got you, a Patsy Cline song that Loretta also had a huge country hit with.

Her duets with Conway Twitty were an important feature of her career. Five are included here - After the fire is gone, Lead me on, As soon as I hang up the phone, Louisiana woman Mississippi man and Feelins'.

Notwithstanding Van Lear Rose, her incredible comeback album in 2004, Loretta's reputation ultimately rests on the music that she recorded in the sixties and seventies. 25 tracks are nowhere near comprehensive (notable omissions include Your squaw is on the warpath, Hey Loretta and They don't make 'em like my daddy anymore) but this single CD will be enough for most people, particularly those of you whose introduction to Loretta's music was via that comeback album.

If you only want a single CD of Loretta's sixties and seventies music, make it this one or All-time greatest hits. Committed fans may prefer the boxed set (Honky tonk girl).

4 out of 5 stars Best single disc Lynn set now available, but not definitive.......2005-06-11

Currently experiencing a career resurgence thanks to her Grammy-winning album Van Lear Rose, Loretta Lynn established herself as one of country music's greatest artists during her twenty-plus years on Decca/MCA. Lynn's early records at Decca like "Wine, Women, And Song" and "Blue Kentucky Girl" were very much in the traditional female country vein and had a subservient theme. 1965's "You Ain't Woman Enough" and 1966's "Don't Come Home A Drinkin'" drastically altered that doormat persona and were also the first hits Lynn wrote at Decca. From then on, Lynn would become a voice and role model for women everywhere.

From 1967 - 1971, Lynn was at her commercial and artistic peak. She wrote most of her hits during this period and no subject appears to have been off-limits. "Fist City" finds Lynn willing to get physical to keep her man while "Rated X" discusses the stigma placed on divorced on women. "One's On The Way" humorously poked at the drudgeries of being a housewife with a lot of kids. Country pride also played a prominent role in Lynn's music during this era with "You're Looking At Country" and"Coal Miner's Daughter," which would become Lynn's signature song.

By 1972, Lynn stopped writing her own material (due to a bad publishing deal with the Wilburn Brothers). Her musical stylings had expanded, with "Trouble In Paradise" finding Lynn experimenting with rock (and sounding extremely ill at ease). Pop-flavored ballads like "When The Tingle Becomes A Chill" and "Somebody Somewhere" also became more common as Lynn's distinctive sound became watered down during the mid-to-late 1970s (when her recording career began to wind down), yet all retain at least a modicum of charm.

For this Definitive volume, Universal Music merely added three recordings to Lynn's twenty-two track All-Time Greatest Hits (2002) cd: ""Blue Kentucky Girl," "You're Looking At Country," and "The Pill." It leaves off such truly definitive recordings as Lynn's first hit "Honky Tonk Girl" (1960, for the Zero label), her first Decca hit "Success" (1962) and her last top-ten hit, "I Lie," as well as such fan favorites as "To Make A Man (Feel Like A Man), "Home," and "Red, White, and Blue" which aren't currently available on cd. Instead, we get five duet chart-toppers with Conway Twitty that were already included on their Definitive set in April. While this is the best single disc Lynn set available, you really need to purchase her box set Honky Tonk Girl (1994) to get a true feel for her greatness.
