5 out of 5 stars Clearer then clear, purer than pure.......2007-06-17

Having seen Grand Funk 5 times from 70-75 this was the album that hooked me on them from the beginning. First having the vinyl, cassette, the first CD and now the remastered, the remastered is sooooooooo great. It captures the purtity of these fellas in their prime and trying to climb. By far a much better band live, this was one of the best live bands of the era. Thank you for the purity. This was grand funk before closer to home and the reach out to the air play. I saw the 71-72 concert, which now has a live cd out, and was deaf for 3 days but of course the songs on this performance are burned into my mind for the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars live Grand Funk is fantastic.......2007-05-25

After searching for this album in my record collection for a good 20 minutes and not having any luck finding it, I realized that all this time it was actually sitting under a bunch of Beatles albums beside the stereo, haha!

I LOVE this album. More specifically, I love the raw energy, frantic guitar work, and just the atmosphere of the early 70's rock scene. I'm only 25 years old, so I wasn't around back when this album was recorded, but the music here certainly convinces me that rock and roll back then was truly phenomenal. Now it's hard listening to studio Grand Funk albums after playing this double live album (on one CD- hooray!)

I don't get how Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple have a reputation for being the heaviest bands around back then, when this album (along with the James Gang's Live in Concert) are solid proof that there were certainly other bands in the early 70's who could rock JUST as hard. People aren't listening to old live albums anymore!

The tracks on this album are the best you could ask for because there's no softer numbers like "Closer to Home/I'm Your Captain" and no commercial stuff "We're an American Band". Instead, it's all about fairly long guitar jams that are many times *extremely* loud.

You know, I was a troublemaker as a child who went around destroying my parents record collection, but thank GOD I didn't mess up this one! A masterpiece for Grand Funk Railroad.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT re-master job of a classic album.......2007-03-01

WOW!
If you grew up in the early-to-mid 70's,you know about GFR already. If you haven't, what a shame. GFR were total anti-stablishment artist's---the press hated these guys and their approach to live shows were like the early punk attitude. Plug in and go,loud and bare bones! AND...that's the point of this CD...these songs weren't subtle, but they hit all the right notes with a whole generation of listeners.
This re-master job is an old hippy's dream come true. Mark Farner was my original guitar hero, and this album taught me the value of TIGHT bass and drum section's behind the lead guy. The re-mastered version just upped the experience one notch higher.
Buy this CD, it is worth the price, times two.

5 out of 5 stars Gone, but never forgotten.......2007-02-24

It's 1972, and I can remember hearing this album being played in my older sister's room through paper-thin walls...over and over and over and over....

I saw my very 1st concert back in 1973.. yep..it was GFR. To this day, no band has hit me like that. I still remember a few years later, I was listening to the DB drum solo, and it dawned on me.. he was imitating TRAINS...duh.

I had put off buying a copy of the 'album' on CD, because I have a boatload of 'low-level' nondescript 1970 CD's. Yes, with CD's there are no more cracks and pops, but if the music is digital .. it should sound digitally great, or else throw the pops back in. I was extremely surprised how well this CD came out. Not only because it is GFR, I gave this CD 5 stars because of how well they handled the reproduction of an analog recording from the early 70's. I would recommend this to any GFR fan .. especially those who owned the original album.

5 out of 5 stars If only I could...........2007-01-29

...travel back in time to this concert and be there on the front row rockin' with donny, mel and marky!

My first album, my favorite album...at least until "Caught in the Act" came out :}

donny and mel make rythym!

marky is marky!

5 out of 5 stars Grand Funk: Live Album.......2007-02-20

I have had 4 copies of this album to date. I my opinion one of the best live albums ever sharing the status of the Who live at Leeds and West,Bruce and Lang Live and Kickin...

5 out of 5 stars This is the Greatest Live Album of all time.......2002-03-17

This was THE GRAND FUNK RAILROAD in all their rawist, nasty, sexual, high energy, Live bombastic Spinal tap Power Trio Glory. This is the Greatest Live Album of all time, there are no overdubs only a few tweaks with the audience noise. This was what GFR was all about, Mel Schacher Playing his BOOMING BASS behind the note. Don Brewer Playing his POUNDING DRUMS ahead of the Note and Mark Farner playing his wild rhythms and screeching leads on GUITAR anywhere; before, after, or in the middle of the note. That magic gave GFR a special sound all to thier own, It can't be faked or copied, its something natural to the three musicians. This album captured millions of fans for GFR who still reminisce about it to this day. It sounds great, nice and bass heavy like GFR in there power trio days were. By only comlaint is the audiance noise is a little scratchy sounding inbetween songs.

5 out of 5 stars The louder The better.......2001-07-16

This is the kind of album wich is impossible to listen to a reasonnable volume! The audience is hysterical and the band is just like a train rolling full speed. One the greatest Live album ever made. Powerful, energetic and still very groovy and melodic! This is a GRAND Grand funk.

3 out of 5 stars Take Me Back!! GFR Is 4Ever BUT... Poor CD Mastering.......2001-06-22

I'm in total agreement that this live album was one of the most "soulful" (to borrow uncledl's term) versions of Grand Funk Railroad's original vinyl recordings. Listening to this album again was like being there. Each time I listen to it I feel the energy and drive like I did when I was 19 years old! Can You Dig IT!!

Man... I gotta let you know that the mastering of this CD leaves allot to be desired. It is missing the richness and fullness of it's vinyl LP counter part. Uncledl's review below says it best. Please read that review.

This CD import is a disappointment, however, I had to have this album... My current vinyl version is scrap from the countless hours of play and abuse. I am happy to say that I have another near mint LP version of Grand Funk Railroad - Live Album on the way from a recent Internet purchase. I'm really looking forward to it's arrival.

This is great album to have in your CD collection, but think it over if fidelity is important to you.

    ROCK ON Brothers and Sisters!!

5 out of 5 stars Most Underrated Band in Music History.......2001-05-04

Grand Funk Railroad is the most underrated band in music history. Appearing at the tail end of the British Invasion, Grand Funk was America's power trio answer to Cream and Led Zeppelin...and, during their prime, they outsold them both.

It's sad that, despite the records they set, they are still absent from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an honor they deserve more than these folks (each is a member of the RRHF): Louis Armstrong, Paul "String Bean" Ackerman, Hal Blaine, Charles Brown, Hank Ballard, LaVern Baker, Dave Bartholomew, Ralph Bass, Tom Donahue, Ahmet Ertegun, Nesuhi Ertegun, Milt Gabler, Little Willie John, James Jamerson, Bill Monroe, The Moonglows, Syd Nathan, The Orioles, Doc Pomus, Lloyd Price, Sam Phillips, Earl Palmer, Ma Rainey, Big Joe Turner, Allen Toussaint, Jerry Wexler, Jimmy Yancey

5 out of 5 stars The best live CD of one of the best American rock groups........2003-02-14

I bought this double-CD album from Japan in 1989 for Yen 4,200. When I went to study at a business school in Dallas, TX during 1993-1995, I found this album availabled in single-disc format, made-in-Holland CD. I still don't have a chance to juxtapose mine with the Dutch or even US discs. But, from my experiences, sound of the Japanese CDs are usually sharp and crisp. Probably the Nippons prefer the sound like that.

These Japanese-made CDs are manufactured by Toshiba-EMI in the Past Master series. Its inner sleeve reissues the original poster of the band playing at the Atlanta International Pop Festival on July 5,1970. Although the sound is very raw, less bright than that of the 1975 Caught in The Act album, but I prefer the Live Album since it gives the exact feel of outdoor performance. Listen to this album and you then see what a non-overdubbed live album is. Grand Funk's debut is no doubt. They are one of a few American Bands which can duel with British rock bands in that era.

            5 out of 5 stars The Live Album...a classic!.......2002-07-06

This was the first album I bought and it was worth spending every penny of my grass-cutting money. The album gets cranked up after some introductions from one of the three concerts this album compiled songs from. All three of these 1970 Florida concert dates spanned just three nights. 'Are You Ready' gets it off to a rockin start and it soars from that point. The two gems which showcase Mark Farner's vocals are 'Mean Mistreater', which Farner intercedes with his searing guitar leads, and 'Heartbreaker'. This clearly establishes GFR as the premier power blues band of the decade and is rivaled only by the then disbanded Cream. 'Inside Looking Out' is a remake of the Animals hit but after listening to this very long version its hardly recognizable. A great cut nonetheless. The rest of the album is so energized its sure to drain you provided you can last from beginning to end. Mark, Don, & Mel prove they're the new kings of power rock with this album and musicianship is second to none. Sadly, after '72, these blues roots were uprooted and thrown away in favor of simple commercial rock.

5 out of 5 stars This old hippy is looking for his youth.......2002-07-03

A 47 year old sales manager in Blackpool (U.K.) who once visited many of the "British" Pop festivals of the early 70's went looking for that raw sound that made the hair's on the back of his neck stand up and sent goose bumps all over his body, yep thats right I found it, on GRAND FUNK LIVE.
Now it helps me stress out on the way home from my straight existance and takes me back to freedom.
            I think you'll know what I mean!!

            5 out of 5 stars Mel's Live Album.......2002-02-08

This was THE GRAND FUNK RAILROAD in all their rawest, nastiest, sexual, high energy, Rude, Loud Live Power Trio Glory. This is the Greatest Live Album of all time, there are no overdubs only a few tweaks with the audience noise (time for Capitol to really remaster this one, the audience noise sounds wrong on the CD). That magic gave GFR a special sound all to there own, It can't be faked or copied, its something natural to the three musicians. Mark and Don together were just the pack, but when they stole Mel from ? and the Mysterians the magic happened and the Pack became Grand Funk Railroad. This album captured millions of fans for GFR who still reminisce about it to this day. It sounds pretty darn good, its nice and bass heavy, like GFR was, in there power trio days. If you don't have a copy of Live album on CD this is a good one to get, But I would still like to see Capitol remaster it.

            5 out of 5 stars Powerful, Raw.......2001-12-24

A most powerful excellent album, Capitol will re-release this and ALL Grandfunk Railroad Album digitally remastered Starting in early 2002. Shea stadium will be the first release. This album (live) is a most powerful rock album, This shows why Grandunk is the Grandfather of heavy metal, "IN NEED" Shows the true unique "lead bass" style invented by GFR! MEl rules on this song. You must rate alll live albums by this one!

Rarely does an album or cd grab you the same way 30 years after first hearing it as it did when it was new to your ears, but this has to be an exception to the rule. I was a serious Grand Funk fan in the 70's and wore out 2 copies of this double album. The music has an urgency and vitality lacking in many live performances, the musicianship is tight, the songs good. There's been no studio tidying up of the tracks or the talk, so you get a real feeling of being there.

These 3 men were absolutely at the top of their form during this concert. They blend seamlessly and the grooves are awash in testosterone and energy. If "Paranoid" doesn't crawl right up your backbone, you're no longer breathing. The live version of "Mean Mistreater," released before the studio album was out, is raw with an emotion missing in the studio cut. The cover of "Inside Looking Out" just churns with power. There's some patter with the audience that has a personal feeling that doesn't seem trite even though I've probably listened to this release 1000 times (no, I'm not exaggerating).

If I had to pick just a few cd's to be stuck with forever, this would be at the top of that list. Get up off your chair and feel it!

            5 out of 5 stars Heavy & beautiful days.......2002-02-01

Grand Funk Railroad...it means a lot to me. Those were the days of my youth, I grow up with that rock music, Mark Farner's fine rhythmic patterns, Mel's exploding and thundering bass, Brewer's precise and brutal drums work...I think I will never forget that energy, that very unique live performance taken from some concerts held that hot summer around the East Cost (only the sleeve photograph is relevant to the Atlanta Pop Festival). This CD it's a must...about the remastering work, the drums is better defined than the vinyl, so too the guitar work...the bass, instead, is less powered (and Schacher used to set West Amps at "10"). The best tracks on it, in my opinion, are "In need" and "Mark says allright"...incredible energy and passion.

5 out of 5 stars Great Package for a Great Live Album.......2002-01-15

This was THE GRAND FUNK RAILROAD in all their rawist, nasty, sexual, high energy, Live Power Trio Performance. That magic gave GFR a special sound all to there own, It can't be faked or copied, its something natural to the three musicians. This album captured millions of fans for GFR who still reminisce about it to this day. This is a nice CD set wit a cool little poster and its on two disks so there's nothing cut out. It sounds great, nice and bass heavy like GFR in there power trio days were. If you don't have a copy of Live album on CD this 2 CD set is a good one to get.
