1 out of 5 stars You must be joking if this gets 5 stars?!.......2007-05-26

Be honest people! This is probably the worst album of their catalog. Yes, I said album. I used to buy every Queen album when it came out and I was a HUGE fan. However, I could NOT listen to this. The only decent songs were Under Pressure and Put out the Fire. I saw them in Seattle on this tour and they were, as usual, without peers live. I recall that they played just those 2 songs mentioned earlier in this show. My question to people is this: If you give Hot Space 5 stars, then what do you give The Game or A night at the Opera? All of their cd's do NOT deserve 5 stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Way underrated.......2007-03-29

News of the World was my first Queen record. This was my second and I liked it even better. To this day, as much as I enjoy all of Queen's catalog ... this still may be my favorite. I am mystified when people bash it. It's fun and groovy. You can drive and dance to it - what's wrong with that? So it's not bombastic arena rock, so what? It's catchy and fun and not a bad song on it.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Space........2007-03-09

Hot Space is a great album. It is an especially good album to get for any Queen fan.

4 out of 5 stars Even when they're mediocre, they're still good.......2007-02-13

Queen moves forward into the dance rave scene of the times of the 80's. It's not that bad considering. Just don't expect the heavy rock of early Queen here. It's all enjoyable, Freddie's "Song for Lennon", "Put out the Fire", "Calling All Girls" and "Under Pressure" are among their best. Remember, a mediocre Queen album is still better than no Queen album and even a mediocre Queen album is better than most bands could dream of producing.

4 out of 5 stars hot space rocks!.......2006-11-13

yes, I said hot space rocks. If you don't like it too bad. The songs are much better when performed live, but these versions are also good.

2 out of 5 stars Save This One For Last.......2006-04-13

If there were never to be another Queen album available, picking up Hot Space would be better than nothing. There are some good cuts, but this album admittedly was not one of Queen's better releases and disappointed quite a few of their fans. In fact, I'd given them up after the radio started curning out some of the Queen-disco that this album personifies. In Queen's defense, they were trying to adapt to the times, and we cannot fault them altogether for one (or two) missteps. Disco did have a life span. Fortunately a short one. Many cuts sound dated now. Hard to conceive how May ever went in that direction, but he did a far better job than many of the one hit wonders of that era. I have revisited this album after all these years, and find it worth a listen, though not in heavy rotation. Save it for last while building your Queen catalog. Under Pressure is an exceptional collaboration, and ultimately saves the album, and showed that whatever the band was trying to do in those days, those ageing Queens could still shine through with the awesome talent that they were.

3 out of 5 stars Some great tracks and some that are so-so.......2006-01-04

I have to agree with Gerard's review talking about this being an album from a band in transition.

This is the album, along with the Flash Gordon soundtrack, where Queen dumped their previous anti-synth stance, and dived in to playing around with them. The results are mixed. Many of the songs have "potential" but they just don't quite get there; they hadn't quite worked out how to use synths well in their pop-rock framework. I'd say 1984's "Radio Ga Ga" was their best example of that.

The "hot space" songs I liked the most at first, the Brian May and Freddie tunes, don't sound so good with age - they come across as cheesey. Whereas the Roger Taylor songs - "action this day" and "calling all girls" - truly stand out for me as the best and relatively timeless. Well, that's after the phenomenal duet with David Bowie on "Under Pressure" - true magic. The album is worth it for those 3 tracks alone.

Deacon's "Back Chat" is an interesting quirky pop tune - whole new sound to Queen. As is Freddy's "Body Language" - for me it would be truly excellent - an example of doing a great synth based song - if not for the one vocal line in the middle where Freddy gets a bit too hystrionic.

Anyway, this isn't an album for those who only like their earlier heavy guitar based rock. Nor for those who like colder sounding synth based pop (eg Numan etc). It's a funky pop album.

4 out of 5 stars Queen in Transition.......2003-05-14

When Hot Space was released in 1982, the disco/dance/funk shouldn't have shocked everybody. Their previous two albums flirted with a dance groove, with "Fun It" on 1978's Jazz, and "Another One Bites The Dust" and "Dragon Attack" on 1980's The Game. I don't understand people who say they don't like this album, deriding it by calling it "Queen's disco album." Dance music emphasizes rhythm over melody. What Queen were attempting with Hot Space, and succeed to a degree, is to combine their perchant for interesting melodies with a nice dancable beat. The interesting bands will always evolve in one way or another. When they don't, they lose relevance and are not at all interesting. The fact is, Queen were one of the most interesting bands in their time. Hot Space fits the transition into the 80's perfectly. The common understanding with Queen fans is that these songs sounded much better live (and they were definitely heavier, judging from the surviving tapes from the Hot Space tour). I would like to say that these songs stand on their own on this album. I can't wait to see the videos in the upcoming dvd release.

This is the Japanese import and it sounds very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Space to fill.......2002-04-14

I first had the U.S. edition with the bonus remix of "Body Language" not on any EMI versions. Domestic ones always have too many reviews, so I put this one here. The remixes are unavailable outside North America officially, so it's paydirt for bootleggers, so we have an advantage over the other countries, even the UK.
Their last Elektra release in the U.S., Canada (I have this LP), Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.

3 out of 5 stars Queen - 'Hot Space' (Virgin).......2006-10-07

Originally released in 1982,this was Queen's official follow-up to '80's 'The Game' lp.I remember that when this album first came out,it would appear that many long-time fans had lost interest in Queen.I do KNOW that their summer,1982 trek of the U.S. was indeed their last tour here. This effort really isn't that bad of an '80's album rock lp.Best track here, hands down is the awesome "Put Out The Fire".Also decent is the lp's single "Body Language",the straight-ahead rocker "Action This Day" and their memorable collaboration with David Bowie "Under Pressure".Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars One of many unfairly-bashed eighties Queen masterpieces.......2006-03-26

Hot Space (1982.) The tenth Queen studio album.

      INTRODUCTION:
The seventies were gone, and the eighties had arrived. It was a sharp musical transition, in which the trends changed overnight. Many of the so-called "classic rock" bands of the previous decade died out almost instantly, while a select few of them would continue to gain success. Queen fell somewhere in the middle. While their first effort of the new decade, The Game, stayed true to their old seventies rock stylings, the works to come were anything but similar to the good old days. What immediately followed was the Flash Gordon soundtrack, the band's most radical departure to date. It was a synth-heavy, mostly instrumental affair. What would follow that? Hot Space, the band's 1982 album. The band had strayed far from their rock roots with their previous album, and the new one got a mixed reaction from fans as well. By now, the band was experimenting heavily with the pop-music stylings of the day, as well as disco and dance-influenced sounds. Read on, and see how Hot Space measures up!

      OVERVIEW:
Queen released the Hot Space album on May 25, 1982. As usual, the band consisted of the standard cast of characters, consisting of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor. Guest musicians include piano player David Richards, horn arranger Arif Mardin, and David Bowie, who the band collaborates with on Under Pressure. The band produced the album, along with producer Mack. Tracklist consists of Staying Power, Dancer, Back Chat, Body Language, Action This Day, Put Out The Fire, Life Is Real, Calling All Girls, Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love), Cool Cat, and Under Pressure.

      REVIEW:
This album was the beginning of the end of Queen's popularity in America in the eighties. This is a real shame, because it is actually an excellent album that shows off a different side of the band. The band's experiments with eighties pop, disco, dance, and the like resulted in some pretty damn good music. The only problem is, well, much like the Flash Gordon soundtrack before, many old fans of the band just couldn't accept the fact that the band was taking their music in a new direction. As such, the band's popularity in the eighties sharply declined following this album. This is disappointing, because they really did create some good music! The album is not one that will instantly please you, but rather one that grows on the listener over time. Keep reading for a track-by-track analysis!

      -SIDE A-

      -Staying Power (Mercury):
The band starts the album with an excellent pop-rocker that will grab your attention and hold on tight. This Mercury-penned tune is the perfect starter to this album, beautifully introducing listeners to this new era of the band. The song features an eighties-pop sound quite similar to the songs of Wham!. Very nice album starter.

      -Dancer (May):
For Brian May's first composition of the album, he takes his classic hard rock stylings, and combines them with the pop trends of the day that were rapidly growing in their popularity. What results is a song that stands strong as the happy medium of these two musical extremes. Brian May knew how to write good music, and here's more proof.

      -Back Chat (Deacon):
In the seventies, John Deacon was mostly known for his upbeat, optimistic pop-rockers. But at the end of the decade, he became an increasingly diverse songwriter. This song is a bass-heavy pop rocker with a sound all its own. It's definitely one of Deacon's finest pieces, and it's a shame it didn't get the same credit as some of his other work.

      -Body Language (Mercury):
This song was one of the big hits off the album, and appropriately so. Freddie Mercury demonstrates in this song that he had definitely come full circle with the eighties pop sound. As this sound was becoming increasingly popular, it seemed that Mercury seemed to get an even better grasp of it. This piece is solid proof. It also has the distinction of being the only Queen single ever released not to feature any guitar!

      -Action This Day (Taylor):
Essentially, this song combines elements of straightforward rock with the eighties pop sound that the band was having such a good time experimenting with in this era. These eighties albums the band released beautifully showed the band's musical diversity - and songs like this are a major reason why.

      -SIDE B-

      -Put Out The Fire (May):
In the seventies, Brian May's songwriting claim to fame was the ability to create hard rockers that never failed to please. This song is one of many from this era that features May combining his classic hard rock sound with the eighties pop sound of the day. The end result is another memorable track, and definitely one of the strongest tunes to emerge from the album.

-Life Is Real (Song For Lennon) (Mercury):
As the subtitle of this Freddie Mercury tune implies, it is a song written in tribute to John Lennon, who had died a year and a half prior to the recording of this album. For the song, Mercury creates a piano-heavy tune that is mostly soft and melodic in its execution - the execution of the song itself actually does resemble the music of Lennon, to a point. As a big fan of Lennon, as well as a big fan of Queen, I got a real kick out of this song. Definitely one of my all-time favorite Queen songs.

      -Calling All Girls (Taylor):
Roger Taylor creates a pop rocker which is among his finest. This was actually the first Queen single A-Side that was a Roger Taylor composition! The song combines most of the good Queen instrumentation of the day - and all of the members are in their prime. Another worthwhile addition to a solid album.

-Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love) (May):
Brian May does the extreme opposite of what you'd expect from him on this track. Rather than a hard rocker, the legendary guitarist serves up a slow and melodic ballad. Despite the differences from what you're used to him doing, and the awkward title, it actually manages to be one of the best songs on the record.

      -Cool Cat (Deacon/Mercury):
John Deacon and Freddie Mercury collaborated on this track. It's a rather interesting piece, in that it is quite slow and melodic. Being penned half by Deacon, it is very intensive on the bass playing. Despite a radical departure from the usual Queen sound fans know and love, this is still an excellent, worthwhile song.

      -Under Pressure (Mercury/May/Deacon/Taylor/Bowie):
The band collaborates with David Bowie, and the song becomes one of the band's biggest hits ever. It's a melodic pop rocker, and Queen and Bowie alike are at their best. When these two superpowers of pop rock collaborated, the results were damn good - it's just a shame they only did it the one time! A damn good closer to the album.

      OVERALL:
In the end, we're left with an excellent album that doesn't get half the attention it deserves. Queen tried something new, and they did a damn good job of it. Eighties pop never sounded so good. Like I previously mentioned, though, it's not an album that is likely to please you the first time you listen to it. But the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you. If you're a true Queen fan, I strongly recommend adding this album to your collection!

      EDITION NOTES:
This album was reissued in the nineties by Hollywood Records. The reissued versions of the albums on Hollywood feature bonus tracks. These are usually nothing remarkable, being that they usually are just bland remixed, but occasionally you'll get a good little rarity like a B-Side or an alternate take. There are also slightly-expanded liner notes and lyrics. And since these compact discs are the readily-available versions of the albums in America, they're the obvious choice to buy.

3 out of 5 stars Queen's Weakest Album but Well Re-packaged!.......2005-11-09

If you are into Queen and really dig this album then this is possibly the version to get. It's been remastered although the sound quality isn't all that great compared to the other Queen albums that have been given the treatment. Still, Queen's attempt to sell-out to the newly acquired R&B audience due to the unmitigated success of "The Game" crashes and burns very badly although a few gems have managed to survive as all-time great singles. "Under Pressure" for one is one of my all-time favourite Queen tracks as well as "Life is Real" the John Lennon eulogy. Otherwise, the album is rather forgettable and to be honest, Queen never really hit the heights of "The Game" again although they have come close towards the end of their Freddie Mercury-as-frontman days. Recommended only if you are die hard fan who needs to complete the collection. Otherwise, this is not Queen at their best. For that you'd get "A Night At the Opera", "The Game" and "Sheer Heart Attack".

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As fun to listen to as the movie is to watch........2003-08-06

This is a rich collection of music ranging from classical motifs to modern pop with a dash of what could be called theme park music. The vocal tracks are all in Japanese and are all great pieces in my opinion.
The tracks are put together in an odd way in that almost half of the tracks seem to be divided into two songs each. They start off as one thing and switch to something else after a few seconds pause in the middle of the track. The result is you end up with more music pieces as these breaks only occur in the non-vocal tracks.
Another thing to note is that a lot of the music pieces revisit the first track in feel. This helps hold the overall album together as one piece with many parts as opposed to just a collection that feels thrown together.
The overall collection is very easy to listen to and ranges from fun and light to moving and emotionally charged.
I don't have the track listings in front of me but I am listening to it as I write this.
Of note (in my opinion) are the following tracks:

#1 is a moving piece in the classical genre with both fast and slow movements.
#2 is a great vocal song more in the pop genre with a engaging chorus.
#6 and #11 are what I would call a theme park tunes - they are short and fun.
#8 is a revisit to #1 but breaks away into something soft and light.
#10 is an electric pop vocal mix.
#19 is the closing theme to the movie and another great vocal track.
