The Album Includes an Equal Number of Tunes from the Band's Songwriters, the Team of Robb Royer and James Griffin Versus Lead Singer David Gates. The Royer/Griffin Team Are the Rockers of the Band, While Gates is More the Romantic Balladeer. Includes the Hits "Let Your Love Go" and the #1 Chart Topper "if".

70s Psychedelic Pop Rock.......2007-06-01

Not sure about why you should buy this album?

Here's what I think of the songs (bear in mind i have a sweet tooth for vocal melody and cool instrumentation):

1. Let your love go: Catchy as hell and a good rock tune
2. Take Comfort: Good strong guitar riff and it goes into some jefferson airplane space out parts tempered with strings... love those rock harmonies
3. Too Much Love: another one of their strong and sweet melodies
4. If: everyone who knows Bread knows this awesome timeless song
5. Be kind to me: mellow song, the good thing about the song is its chill out instrumentation... the melody is not powerful just easy... not something you'd remember or take an effort to.
6. He's a good lad: sweet melody, you can hear a little of the beatles here.
7. She was my lady: you'd definitely hear john lennon in this... but this doesnt have a strong melody... it just has a nice psychedelic feel to it.
8. Live in your love: kinda like elton john in a way.. the way the song starts. this song shifts all over the place... somewhat unhinged... not something i'd bother to listen to again or care to remember.
9. What a Change: not catchy nor worth remembering
10. I say again: Awesome starting instrumentation, quite trippy but no strength in the melody... i'd listen to the instrumentation again but i wont ever remember the vocals.
11. Come Again: ok this song is boring... the only thing remotely interesting is the instrumental part towards the end of it.
12. Truckin: dont be fooled by the country start... it has a cool 70s bridge part.

Don't buy this if you're not into collecting Bread. Only 5 catchy songs out of 12, you can get those 5 songs from other Bread compilation albums.

The "Baroque" Bread; i.e. a true classic ..........2006-06-04

Okay, maybe I'm a little biased here as far as judging which Bread album was the best of their half-dozen stellar studio efforts, but there are many factors convincing me that "Manna" should have featured the subtitle "From Heaven."

The legendary love ballad "If" alone is almost enough to justify the album's "heavenly" appeal, but songs such as (among others) the harpsichord-driven rocker "Let Your Love Go" and the church-like organ solos on the ethereal "What A Change", as well as the album's centerpiece, "Come Again" (which, for all its melodrama, succeeds brilliantly in its shifts of tempo, mood, and overall dynamics that even most pop music craftsmen ignore) ultimately give this album a warm "Baroque" feel that makes the album a wonderful first choice if you were forced to choose among Bread's studio efforts instead of any of their numerous and sometimes notoriously repetitive best-of collections (with the notable exception of 1996's 2-CD "Retrospective" of course).

Sure, seasoned Wall-Of-Sound Veteran Larry Knechtel, who joined the band following the album's 1971 release, contributed a wealth of experience and his own subtle signature touches to succeeding (and also massively successful) Bread recordings, but the tensions that had just begun to brew within the previous lineup were likely a factor in producing an ultimately masterful 12-song body of work that no Bread album before or since could touch with a ten-foot, uh, loaf.

Enough already - just enjoy the album if you already own it ... if not, then get it post haste!!!

a really interesting effort, but ultimately uneven.......2005-09-22

Bread broke through commercially in 1970 with the David Gates-penned classic "Make It With You" which was released as a single in May of that year. "Make It With You" then went on to appear on Bread's second album "On The Waters" which is quite a showcase as far as the David Gates-penned material is concerned, but unfortunately that is not the case for the material by James Griffin and his writing partner Robb Royer.

"Manna", Bread's 3rd album, was originally released in March of 1971. There's a heck of a lot going on stylistically here which gives the album sort of a tug-of-war feel, and although the results are ultimately uneven, it's still a really interesting effort. As far as the songwriting is concerned, the album is split down the middle, with 6 tunes written solely by Gates and the remaining 6 written by the Griffin/ Royer pairing.

On the whole, Gates is in pretty strong form here with his compositions. His weakest tune on the album by far is "He's A Good Lad"--it's got a lightweight McCartney-esque feel to it, but unfortunately it's annoyingly slight and dull, with toothless and excessively repetitive lyrics. The album-opening "Let Your Love Go" had been released as a single in late 1970 and peaked at #28--it's certainly catchy, but the attempt at a punchy and relatively hard-rocking sound sounds somewhat forced. "Come Again" is an extremely ambitious tune, starting off as a stately classical-inspired ballad, shifting into a jazzy nightclub feel, and containing a complexly melodic instrumental segment with piano and orchestration--it's quite intriguing, with impressive and effective melodicism, but unfortunately the song's melodrama takes away much of its impact. Gates does come up with three irresistible songs--there's the somewhat roots rock-flavored "She Was My Lady" in which he delivers an excellent echoing lead vocal and savvy lead guitar soloing; the breezy pop-rocker "What A Change" which has him soaring up to a blissful falsetto on the choruses; and of course, the immortal "If", a heart-wrenching, transcendant ballad of eternal devotion, fittingly enchanced by the 'underwater'-sounding electric guitar.

As for the Griffin/ Royer combo, they're showing signs of improvement over their "On The Waters" material, although Gates' production and arranging probably deserve a considerable amount of the credit for this, and the results still leave a lot to be desired. "Take Comfort" moves back and forth between a relatively hard-rocking section and a ballad section--the rockier part does have a catchy melody, but the song's 'meaningful' lyrics are lame-brained and obvious, and Griffin's typically overwrought vocals make them sound even worse. They go for edginess on the lustful, R&B-flavored "Be Kind To Me", but the tune sounds considerably like a throwaway, with lame lyrics and excess repetition of the title. They do come up with an engaging moody ballad with "I Say Again", a nice acoustic-based pop-rocker "Too Much Love", plus a couple other respectable tunes--the orchestrated ballad "Live In Your Love"; and the relatively revved-up album closer "Truckin'" which is typically overwrought but reasonably catchy.

In the end, "Manna" has its moments for sure, but it's frustratingly disjointed, with uneven songwriting. The 1995 CD release on Rhino does sweeten the pot with excellent, extensive liner notes and a typically valiant remastering effort--try to track it down for a reasonable price if you're a big-time Breadhead.

Why did the other reviewer write 'I have to admit...' for his opinion of loving Bread- one should be proud to like this sort of music!
As for the album, it is excellent. Not one weak song on here. It opens with two songs, that give a false impression, this might be a heavier album. 'Let your love go' is one of their best rockers, showing Gates could do other styles, not just ballads. 'Take comfort' goes from really bluesy bits to ballady bits in the middle and it really works, showing Griffin and Royer were as talented as the genius Gates.
'If' is the most beautiful heart wrenching ballad and the end of the song, if you close your eyes, will make you feel you are flying. Incredible stuff. The best song on here just beats that though, 'Come again'. what an incredible classical arrangement and what a beautiful melody. Definitely shows what depth goes into their songs. Awesome.
Another of my favourites is one that Griffin has not rated in retrospect, 'Live in your love', but to me, this is another incredible ballad, with a soaring melody.
All the other songs are great also. Highly recommended from these geniuses I am proud to love.

I like this album- why don't I listen to it more?.......2003-06-15

This was Bread's third album released on March 1, 1971 and the last one that showcased Robb Royer as a group member. After "Manna" he left Bread, but continued to co-write songs with James Griffin. Of the twelve songs on this album, James Griffin and Robb Royer wrote six of them; David Gates wrote the remaining six.

Of the six Bread albums, this one gets less air time with me than any of the others. There are some memorable tunes here- Gates' "If," which is one of the defining songs for this group, and "He's A Good Lad." Griffin and Royer's "Truckin," "Let Your Love Go," "Live In Your Love," and "Too Much Love" are also here. Other than these six songs, the album did not produce and memorable and influential songs to me. Not to say they are not enjoyable, but they don't leave a lasting impression on me. Gates and Griffin/Royer have some song styles here that are very different and not heard on any of the other group's recordings. It is interesting to listen to this album for that reason.

Overall, for the most part, this is a very subdued collection of songs. This grouping also continued to showcase the very different styles and influences between Gates and Griffin/Royer. This gives the album a very uneven flow. While that formula worked on the two prior albums, "Bread" and "On the Waters," it produced the least successful effort on "Manna" in my opinion.

I found the new piece written by Mark O'Connor to be a wonderful sound that stirred the American Pride in me. I also found the pieces arranged by Alice Parker to be sung with excitement and accuracy- qualities lacking in most choral groups today

I highly recommend this recording.

The lingua franca of the Indian subcontinent is film music, or "filmi," a unique musical form known for its wild eclecticism. Anything from African drumming to Alpine yodeling can and will be borrowed by filmi composers and mixed with indigenous Indian elements. The 1950's through the 70's crystalized the classic filmi style, with its lavish gloriously overblown orchestrations and no-holds-barred plundering of musical worlds both real and imaginary. The folks at Globestyle collected film songs from this period on their series _Golden Voices from the Silver Screen_, emphasizing the wilder and woolier side of vintage filmi, with lots of big beats and jarring musical juztapositions. Vol. 2 features the bombastic Elvis-esque duet between Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle (the world's most recorded singer). Generous and useful liner notes, too!

Enough clowning here too, the very first track, excellent overall, ends with a choir of drunken Vikings. The next one, Liten, is a great art-rock piece. Sucken is a nice little intermission featuring a good guitar and piano and Lang Ner is a (well played) mix of folkish tunes. Track 6 (the long word) is a fine thing and Influenser is an interesting composition (exclusive of the rooster battle cries in the middle of it), reminds of Yes' Fish. The last track is a mix of avant-garde and folk, very good guitar.

Samla Mammas Manna.......2006-05-01

Samla's music is full of mockery and buffoonning. Eventually Samla changed the group's name to Zamla Mammaz Manna and later to Von Zamla. (This album was their first and should be listed under the Samla not Zamla name). The change of the name is somewhat reflective of their perception of their art, nothing-can-be-serious-enough-to-be-serious. Just wondering if Rock in Opposition's main idea required some sort of jest... This album is interesting although pricey

Fun stuff.......2004-08-09

The first s/t album of SMM from 1971 is their best of their releases listed here at amazon.com, these piano based instrumental pieces are neat and fun and have nice little melodies that whispers something about what was to come from Lasse Hollmer. There's some traces of Soft Machine, Gentle Giant, Camel and Caravan to be found here which gives some picture of their orientation and tells where they're coming from - but not where they're going! Where they went some years later was the fabolous 1979 double album Schlagerns Mystik/För Äldre Nybegynnare which is a 5 star release that has it all. Sadly this masterpiece is not listed at amazon.com and is hard to find, but try to find it! This debut SMM release is much milder and more conformative than their coming works, you will perphaps listen to it a few times a year, and that will at best wake up an interest to know where these guys headed to.
