Album Description

Organist Jimmy Smith, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and guitarist Kenny Burrell always make for a potent team, and with drummer Donald Bailey completing the group, the quartet digs soulfully into such numbers as the groovin' "Midnight Special," "Jumpin' the Blues," and "One O'Clock Jump." A highly recommended album.

Players Include:
Jimmy Smith - Organ, Organ (Hammond)
Stanley Turrentine - Sax (Tenor)
Donald Bailey - Drums
Kenny Burrell - Guitar

5 out of 5 stars Ivank.......2007-03-23

I am rediscovering JS and started to get his CDs, this one is a must in his work. I had the chance to meet personally Mr S. Turrentine years ago, and listened him alive as well, here you can appreciate his art.
High quality jazz music on JS style. The sound could be better but remember is 1960' production. You will not waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2005-10-29

It is surprising that Jimmy's 'Back at the Chicken Shack' has so many more reviews listed than 'Midnight Special'. This title is just as good as or better than Back at the Chicken Shack. If you love one, you'll love the other. If you have neither, buy both for crying out loud - they're excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Another Masterpiece!.......2004-11-25

"Midnight Special" is the lesser-known sister album of Jimmy Smith's monumental "Back at the Chicken Shack." The "Midnight Special" album has exactly the same sound (lineup) and the songs on "Midnight Special" seem to pick up right where "Chicken Shack" left off. Jimmy shines as master of his art, making jamming on the electric organ sound as easy as walking. He's bluesy, funky, and bopping all at the same time. And if the electric organ is the heart of this album, then the saxophone is the soul. There simply isn't a bad note on this album, and it's a shame it isn't remembered with as much popularity and praise as "Chicken Shack." It's just as good.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential.......2004-08-24

"Midnight Special" and "Back At The Chicken Shack," both featuring the same line-up (Jimmy Smith - organ, Stanley Turrentine - tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell - guitar, and Donald Bailey - drums,) are the quintessential organ / tenor sax recordings. Which is better? Well they were both recorded at the same place on the same day so they should be treated as one. In other words, buy them both!

5 out of 5 stars late, late blues.......2003-09-06

it's round midnight. the lights are low, the table candles have all burned down. there's a haze of blue smoke hanging just below the ceiling. the conversation has dropped to muffled whisper. it's time for the blues to roll in. it's nearing time for last call, but there's still minute or two to try to drown yesterday.

that's the feel of jimmy smith's opening number. mr. smith is a master of the blues, and when he entered the studio with stanley turrentine and kenny burrell in tow, a super session was put in place. mr. smith revolutionized the hammond b-3 making it a staple of hard bop jazz, but he never forgot the roots of the instrument--blues shacks and also church halls. this album covers the spectrum, revealing the funk at the heart of jazz, but also exploring the nuances of bop--"a subtle one"--

getting this album is getting one of the true masterpieces of the blue note catalog.

4 out of 5 stars A good start for your Midnight Star collection.......2006-07-03

If you're looking for a complete Midnight Star collection, there isn't one. Each `greatest hits" compilation has it's own strengths and weaknesses. After much research, I finally choose this "The Best of" compilation as part of my strategy to own the ultimate Midnight Star collection.

Formerly a club DJ in the 80's, I was interested in only album or extended mixes. This CD included what I believe to be album cuts of Scientific Love and Engine No. 9; two must haves rarely found on other compilations. It also includes album cuts of Operator, Midas Touch, Headlines, & Wet My Whistle. Missing from this collection is Don't Rock The Boat and Electricity. One disappointment was the single mix of Freak-a-zoid.

With this CD I'll need to also purchase and download single mp3 extended mix versions of Freak-a-zoid, Electricity, Don't Rock the Boat, and possibly Operator to complete my ultimate Midnight Star collection. The best selling point about this CD is the price. At just $7 it represents a great value!

4 out of 5 stars Midnight Train to Georgia.......2005-10-06

Having mistakenly purchased re-recorded versions of this classic title track, it was a relief to find that the album contained all original 60's recordings.

As I said, a classic!

5 out of 5 stars BEHIND THE COVER.......2001-09-15

What this cover is doing here? This is the cover of the album "2nd Anniversary", 1975, Buddah Records, one of the best albuns of Gladys'career! However, this cd mentioned above is just another collection of Gladys Knight and The Pips. If it's good? Obvious! All the musics of this selection are excellent! But the only ones contained in the original album, (that one that has this cover) are "Part Time Love", "Georgia On My Mind" and "Feel Like Making Love". If you don't know Gladys Knight and The Pips and their musics, this cd is a good chance of knowing them (and become fan), but if know them well, this is a mistake! This isn't the original album! Search for "2nd Anniversary"!

5 out of 5 stars WHERE IS SHE NOW?.......2001-02-12

This is an album full of grace and peace. Gladys and her team have put together a wonderful package here. I would go anywhere in the world to see her in concert, so let me know if she's playing near you soon! This album is an excellent purchase even at twice the price.

    Product Description

The Miami Saxophone Quartet takes great pleasure in presenting MIDNIGHT RUMBA, our third CD recording. Once again the contents reflect the eclectic nature of the group, featuring music inspired by the cultures of Cuba, Spain, and Argentina, as well as elements of Classic Jazz, American Folk, and Tin Pan Alley. We are also fortunate and proud to feature the contributions of special guests Arturo Sandoval and Jon Secada. Jon sings Ed Calle's unique arrangement of his hit "Angel" and Arturo Joins us on "Angel," "A Night In Tunisia,” and "Early Autumn." Also featured are past contributor bassist Chuck Bergeron, electric bassist Javier Carrion, and our all-star Latin percussion section of Richard Bravo, Lee Levin, and Luis Gonzales. This collection marks the debut of Ed Calle as a composer for the quartet, who gives us the title cut Midnight Rumba, part of his original work The Iberia Suite. Gary Lindsay brings us arrangements of A Night In Tunisia, Con Alma, and James Taylor’s Benjamin, and New York based trombonist/vocalist Peter McGuiness contributes his take on Kurt Weill’s My Ship. Finally a piece by the master of the Tango, Astor Piazzolla. We hope you enjoy our latest effort! Gary, Gary, Ed, and Mike

The first title in the three-volume Library of Congress Recordings series of the titanic singer and 12-string guitarist, Midnight Special consists of recordings that date back to 1934. By then, the much-traveled, oft-jailed Huddie Leadbetter had assembled a repertoire that was laden with what would become signature Leadbelly tunes. Featured on this 15-track anthology are a couple of his most famous songs, including "Irene" (here presented in two versions) and "Midnight Special." The autobiographical "Governor O.K. Allen" (about the singer's plea for a pardon), the cocaine-inspired "Take a Whiff on Me," and the ballad "Careless Love" add to the appeal of this touchstone set. If you're interested in laying the groundwork of a Leadbelly collection, this is as good a place to start as any. --Steven Stolder

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Leadbelly's Best (but what's up with Amazon's price!).......2004-02-03

As a previous reviewer noted, these recordings were made while Leadbelly was still in prison (hence the plea to Governor O.K. Allen to set him free). Probably for this reason, the often emotionless Leadbelly delivers his most heartfelt performances, waxing for John Lomax definitive versions of Midnight Special, Irene and Frankie and Albert (not just for him but for anyone, though Bob Dylan laid down a damn fine version of Frankie and Albert on Good as I Been to You in 1992). The rest of the tracks also are first-rate. Even though presumably out of practice, Leadbelly nevertheless accompanys his powerful vocals with excellent (and distinctive) percussive guitar work (with a bit of slide thrown in). If you are not used to Library of Congress recordings (or pre-World War II recordings for that matter), be warned that the sound quality is not up to today's standards. That aside, I think this is one of the best pre-war blues CDs I own, and I own quite a few. (Volume 2, Gwine Dig a Hole to Put the Devil In, is almost as good.) Again, Amazon.com comes in dead last in price, as I've seen these Rounder CDs available elsewhere on the internet for much less (and at J&R in New York, if you're in the area). Amazon, your arrogance is beginning to show!

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Most Compilations.......2000-09-06

What makes this CD special are the songs that were recorded while Leadbelly was still in Angola State Prison. Some white-boy from the north came down with his equipment. At first Leadbelly balked, but finally jammed out some tunes. They were done as he sat there in shackles and you can actually hear the prison bloodhounds welping in the background. This setting pumped Leadbelly to put out what I consider to be the greatest versions of those tunes available today. The heart never soars as high and free as when it is being held down tight with shackles and these versions illustrate that. Get this!

5 out of 5 stars Leadbelly would be at Carnegie Hall if he was still living........1998-12-19

The first I ever heard of LeadBelly was on an album "Essential Pete Seeger." Whenever I hear Lead Belly sing "Goodnight Irene," or "Matchbox Blues." or "Frankie and Albert," He reminds me of the Weavers. I like the story about how the "Borgeoius Blues," came to birth. That is my favorite Leadbelly song. I've never heard him sing it, But I have heard other artists perform it. I personally don't have any of his other albums. But I'd strongly reccomend it to those who don't know about LeadBelly. I imaging that Leadbelly's fans wont need any encouragement. For anyone who doesn't know, The story of the "Borgeoius Blues came to Pass when Leadbelly was in Washington recording music for the Library of Congress, where my dad used to work. Leadbelly and his family were expelled from a boarding house because they were African-American. Another folk singer who was with him said. LeadBelly, don't worry, Washington is nothing but a Borgeouis Town.

1 out of 5 stars She shouldn't be allowed to open her mouth..........2000-10-26

The comparison with Kenny G is right on. It's not that KG can't play; he simply has no imagination and neither does Brewer, and unfortionately Brewer has no chops, her voice in nasaly, and she belongs in the same category as Lawrence Welk, not Duke Ellington. Brewe demonstrates her stiffness and what I find to be highly unswwingable. Heck brewer couldn't swing if you hung her. And, in my estimation, she also has her cheezy pop style . Ah, well, life is made bearable through the unexpected interuptions of differing opinions.

        5 out of 5 stars Solid!.......2000-09-04

The comparison with Kenny G is misplaced. It's not that KG can't play; he simply has no imagination. Brewer, on the other hand, can sing, and demonstrates her versatility in what I find to be highly enjoyable. And, in my estimation, she also has her own unique and entertaining style. Ah, well, life is made bearable through the unexpected interuptions of differing opinions.

1 out of 5 stars Sounds like Betty Boop trying to swing..........2000-05-31

She should stick to the cheesy pop tunes that made her famous. This talentless hack couldn't sing jazz anymore then Kenny G. can play it.
