A good, inexpensive single-disc compilation of Rundgren singles may not be what the world's been waiting for, but it's a fine thing nonetheless. Largely avoiding the big pretensions of many of his post-Something/Anything? albums, this record distills 15 years of releases into a hits-just-keep-on-coming set which makes sense of the sensibility that produced the bemusedly soulful "Hello It's Me," the straightforwardly sweet "Dream Goes On Forever," and the outright goofy "Bang the Drum All Day." --Rickey Wright

I LOVE THIS CD. IT IS SO FULL OF MEMORIES. GREAT VOCALS.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of depth and songs that speak to everyone, not just Todd Rundgren fans.......2007-03-17

I am not what would be called a "dyed in the wool" Todd Rundgren fan. However, I think he is very talented and some of his songs demonstrate a depth and sensitivity that are rare. Through music and his ability in the area of vocal nuances, Todd reaches deeply into the soul. Two of my favorite songs on this album are "Can We Still Be Friends" and "Love is the Answer." Both of these have made my hair stand up because they convey their message so powerfully.

If you are a casual Todd Rundgren fan this is the album to get. The choice of material is excellent and there is a lot of music here for a low cost that stands up well to repeated listening. I would pat twice the price just to have the two songs I mentioned above. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars TODD RUNDGREN RISES FOR THE OCCASION WITH THIS COMPILATION........2007-03-07

I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "THE VERY BEST OF TODD RUNDGREN" by one of Rock's legendary artists, I give you TODD RUNDGREN. This legendary compilation album was originally released in 1997 on Compact Disc on the Rhino Records label which is licensed from Bearsville Records Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

TODD RUNDGREN will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being the most modest music artist ever. RUNDGREN never gives himself any credit nor does he give himself a pat on the back when deserved. In reality, RUNDGREN has written, recorded and delivered some of the greatest classic songs in Rock n' Roll history. RUNDGREN would begin his career in the late 60's with a band called NAZZ. However, it would be his solo career that RUNDGREN would strike gold. RUNDGREN would write and record several hits throughout his whole solo career. This compilation album highlights RUNDGREN'S solo period from 1970 to 1985. This compilation album also includes the hits he wrote with the band UTOPIA from 1977 to 1980. This compilation album also includes the 1989 hit single "The Want Of A Nail" recorded with Bobby Womack. In my opinion, "THE VERY BEST OF TODD RUNDGREN" is a true testament of a unheralded genius and a fine fitting tribute to a legendary singer/songwriter that was indeed, ahead of his time.

Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This compilation album begins with the legendary mellow Rocker "We Gotta Get You A Woman," the slow beautiful mellow "Be Nice To me," the breathtaking mellow Rocker "I Saw The Light," the forever RUNDGREN trademark mellow Rocker "Hello It's Me," the blistering Rocker "Couldn't I just Tell You," the beautiful mellow Rocker "Just One Victory," the beautiful acoustic soulful "A Dream Goes On Forever," the fast paced sythesized Rocker "Real Man," the beautiful acoustic Rocker "Love Of The Common Man," the beautiful slow soothing RUNDGREN composition that was also a hit for England Dan & John Ford Coley "Love Is The answer," the merciless Rocker "Love In Action," the slow beautiful synthesized song that was also a hit for Rod Stewart "Can We Still Be Friends," the groundbreaking mellow Rocker "The Very Last Time," the circus filled like atmosphere fast paced synthesized mellow Rocker "Bang The Drum All Day," the incredible synthesized fast paced mellow Rocker "Something To Fall Back On" and the danceable synthesized killer Rocker "The Want Of A Nail." May I also add that RUNDGREN really lets loose on this fabulous compilation album. I grew up listening to all of these songs and it felt great listening to them all over again on one disc.

Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth seeking further into and cheeking out especially if you are the new and curious beginner for the first time of RUNDGREN'S sound and music.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great collection that a serious devout music collector would not want to be without.

In closing, TODD RUNDGREN is here to stay. Rock n' Roll needs a modest artist and entertainer like RUNDGREN to keep Rock n' Roll humble and breathing happily. As of now, RUNDGREN has been touring as a new member with THE CARS. From what I hear, THE CARS have been doing extremely well. I guess that goes to show you that we have not seen or heard the last of RUNDGREN yet. I also anticipate that we will be hearing from RUNDGREN again in the near future soon. So here's to you TODD. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. TODD RUNDGREN RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars A great intro to Todd Rundgren's work.......2006-12-18

I bought this disc on a whim, knowing how much I enjoyed Rundgren's mainstream work and I was not disappointed. There is not a single bad track on this disc, although I'm not a huge fan of Bang The Drum All Day. Real good stuff. I'd like to recommend this disc to those who've only listened to the pop stuff on the radio these days. Here's what music is really all about.

This double record from 1972 remains the definitive collection of Rundgren's long career. With Rundren acting as a one-man-band for three-quarters of the session, it was also his bid for a Ph.D. from the college of musical knowledge. He deserved the degree for simply writing the lead-off track, "I Saw the Light," a melodic pop-rock gem that remains Rundgren's greatest hit. Rundgren excels at Beatles-esque pop-rock ("Couldn't I Just Tell You," "Wolfman Jack") and Philadelphia-styled soul ballads ("It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference," "Hello, It's Me"). He also sticks his toe into heavy metal ("Black Maria"), jazz-rock fusion ("Breathless"), and cerebral pop ("The Night the Carousel Burnt Down"). Like most double albums, there's fat on the play-list, but the best of Something/Anything gave credence to Rundgren's boast of being a wizard and a true star. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars something/anything What a talent!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-08

I recently bought a Bonnie Tyler CD(super hits) because I loved a couple of her songs(Bright eyes,I'm holding out for a heroe)which by the way is terrific.Every song was great but I loved her duet with Todd Rundgren. I searched the internet for Todd Rundgren and fell in love with him. He is probably the most talented man in the music business. He does it all. I am buying everything he has ever done. The man is amazing.!!!! I went to the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida recently and I can understand why they have a wall dedicated to him. My dream would be to meet him to tell him how wonderful he is. DEBBIE

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2006-08-06

An amazing double album by , at the time, a very young Todd. An interesting variety of songs. Todd can rock, he can croon, he can play bubble gum, he can jam, he can harmonize, he's got soul. "Hello it me" was a fav when I was young and it is still way up there today.

It so wrong that this ultra talented musician, song writer, performer, producer, and chance taker is not in the rock and roll hall of fame.

5 out of 5 stars excellent double album.......2006-05-23

todd rundgren really proves to be great in many different areas on this double album. he dabbles in a bunch of musical styles, writes some great songs with great melodies, produces everything, he's a one man band, he's a band leader, he's a one man carole king album, he gets heavy, and does some pretty weird experiments. one man... doing all of that! wow! listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THAT TODD.......2006-03-23

Todd Rundgren is definitely one of the best songwriter's ever. Pop, rock, jazz...the man can write anything. This double album is awesome and one of his best. Besides the obvious hits, Wolfman Jack is rockin' as is Black Maria. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Todd Rundgren: Always A Wizard, A True Star.......2006-02-08

This is in my top 10 all time favorite albums. It has everything from pop to hard rock and some hints of everything else...well, okay, no country(Thank you, Todd). There is some viking music, though.

The Runt's sound is always very uncharacteristic for his time. He was way ahead of the music crowd and not influenced by what was popular at the moment. On at least one cd in this album, Todd plays all of the instruments, recording in his living room, and I heard that the backup singers were neighbors on his street. Both cd's are perfect. After this album, Todd was off to Utopia.

Top forty songs from this album: I Saw the Light, Hello It's Me, It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference. Todd's other top forty hits: "We've Got to Get You a Woman," is on Runt. He also did an amazingly faithful version of Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" where he was probably playing all instruments and doing all vocals.

An earlier album, that has a simlar energy to this one, is titled "A Wizard A True Star:" many varied musical sounds and there is also a great version of 'Cool Jerk."

Todd was punk before punk. But he was much more than that. He was a musical genius who missed or avoided the big spotlight.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes I Don't Know What To Feel.......2007-03-28

This is a far out and trippy album and features what would be the first touring Utopia lineup. This album reminds me sort of prog rock crossed with glam rock in a sort of T-Rex kind of way with a Las Vegas stage show thrown in. Far out and totally Todd, No one has ever recorded an album like this and no one ever will again. Opening with International Feel to the closing Just One Victory, this album is a feast for the senses. I would recommend going out and getting yourself a pair of good headphones for this one. The JVC Japan import comes with all the original inserts that the old lp copies originally came with which is nice to have again although mini ones.

5 out of 5 stars Todd Rundgren's Masterpiece!.......2007-03-07

Dazzling, multi-colored, and multi-layered are perfect ways to describe this *vivid* album (the brilliant cover truly does summarize this album in a nut shell) but, unless you're a bit of a quirky idealist yourself (which I proudly am), it may not make a whole lot of sense to you at first. Personally, I find that I can understand and relate to it better than many albums that I've heard. This album is finely crafted and wildly adventurous, all while having a strikingly strong sense of humanity all throughout. There are essentially two separate albums here (it was a perfect idea to style the title as two separate phrases). The "A Wizard" portion is marked by zany madcap madness, avant-garde experimentalism, and a generally highly animated tone. This portion begins with "International Feel" and ends with "Le Feel Internationale" (which is basically the same song, but it's so good that it's a welcomed treat each time). The "A True Star" portion, which makes up the rest of the album, is full of well-crafted pop and soul numbers that are distinctly marked by Todd's warm and big-hearted, yet sharp and clever approach. This album was kind of disorienting the first time that I listened to it. None of it falls neatly into any particular "type" category (which is one of the main things that I love so much about it), and the first half is mostly made up of seemingly incongruous song fragments with no breaks in between, with Todd seeming to go out of his way to make the transitions from song to song as rough as possible. Thank goodness for Todd's unflinchingly creative thinking, because it would not be nearly as thrilling if he had crafted it any other way. I now feel like this is one of the most brilliant song sequences ever captured on tape. The warm psychedelic soul number "Sometimes I Don't Know What To Feel" that begins the "A True Star" portion is so honest, transparent, and completely devoid of pretense that it remains just as striking and touching each and every time that I listen to it. And he goes from that right into the downright Stevie Wonder/Paul McCartney-esque impeccably crafted, melodic perfection of "Does Anybody Love You?". Todd shows incredible musical and artistic range throughout this entire album (I think he even outdoes Curtis Mayfield's original on his remake of "I'm So Proud" during the Soul medley, and his moving rendition of "Never, Never Land" sounds like a totally original creation), and his quirky sense of humor and general big-heartedness just make the ride that much more rewarding. This is one of the greatest albums that I've ever heard and, I encourage everyone who is curious to pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Will only ToddHeads be reading these reviews?.......2007-02-26

because WE know, we know and have known the magical artistry of the Man, but will this music be spread to the next generation of ears? Will they get it ? Does it matter? If you have known Todd's music or if you are curious because of maybe seeing him recently with the New Cars, this is one of his best musical expressions. I would say his recent Liars is up there too. This was done before all the studio gimicks that are so over used now and to think he was so ahead of his time...well maybe to the 20 somethings that may not be a big deal... anyway, that all does not really matter, what matters is the musical expression, Todd's quirkey ideas, his lyrics, his melodies, his arrangements, the flow of one song to the next ( do NOT do random shuffle , listen to the songs in order, at least at first) and imagine Todd at his lanky gap toothed copper haired youthful zanyness and appreciate that he has graced our world with his inner ( and yes outer) beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Rundgren's best work.......2007-02-19

This has always been one of my favorite albums. I've owned the vinyl for 20+ years and just bought the CD. I've lent the CD to many of my 20 something co workers and they are just blown away by the production and the color. Sure it has a few rough transitions but when you consider the era when it was done you have to give Todd credit for breaking new ground. The original work is some of his best and his tributes to R&B and broadway are excellent. This Album deserves a good listen by anyone who likes music of any form.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked prog masterpiece.......2007-06-22

Todd's first lineup of Utopia, that included three keyboard players, was short lived, however, this debut release is an outstanding psychedelic prog disc that is overlooked (don't know why) by some prog fans. Most of the songs are lengthy, well written, and exciting, so I never lose interest. "The Ikon" is a thirty-minute constantly changing musical journey of ideas that are cohesive. I can't say the same of most other epic tunes. As expected with three keyboard players, there is plenty of room for instrumental passages and solos, so if that's not your style, pass on this. However, if you're a prog fan and you've never heard this, it is essential listening.

5 out of 5 stars No need to wait another year, UTOPIA is here.......2007-03-28

Music that will take you to that idealized place. A concept album built around Utopia(the place which the band was named after). The music is different than anything that the band would try again and it's kind of surprising to me that this one is still one of the easist ones available given the fact that it's the least radio friendly with three long songs mixed in with one short one. The songs themselves, starting with Utopia which is recorded live and is quite involved rocks hard. Freak Parade is a cool tune with some really nice changes in it. Freedom Fighters is a fun song and The Ikon which used to take up all of side two goes to many wonderful places. I should add that the lyrics are also execelllent. Makes you think that Utopia REALLY IS HERE. Once again, the JVC copy rocks.

4 out of 5 stars Why does this album always seem to "fly under the radar" of prog fans?.......2006-05-23

I'm an avid prog rock fan, but I also have a pretty extensive collection of Todd, whose music most may view as "eclectic" if nothing else - dabbling at times in pop, prog, electronica, computer-based effects, etc. So if you never spent the time to get to know the Todd beyond his Carole King-like ballads, then you might have missed some pretty cool music of his. (You also would have missed some not-so-great stuff in and around, but we won't go into that here;-)

He was perhaps at his proggiest in 1974 and 1975 when he gave us "Todd Rundgren's Utopia" and followed it up with his "Initiation" album (which I've already gone on record as promoting as a personal "Top 5" album). But this Utopia album is different from all of the subsequent Utopia albums in one major way: the personnel that comprised all subsequent studio albums of the prog-pop Utopia were Todd, Kasim Sultan (bass), Roger Powell (keys), and John Wilcox (drums), while this one-off first Utopia album consisted of Todd, John Siegler (bass), Kevin Ellman (drums), and THREE keyboardists: Moogy Klingman, Ralph Schuckett, and Jean-Yves "M. Frog" Labat. Different sound and different musical focus.

The bottom line here is that this album is really something special for prog fans. The opener, "Utopia Theme", was recorded live in Atlanta, and really is superb for all of its 14 minutes, featuring GREAT guitars (by TR), synths, vocals, melodies, and mystical lyrics. The remainder of the album is studio recorded. The 10-minute "Freak Parade" begins with a great vibe, and ends with the solo bass line fading out. In between, you get a little Zappa-like quirkiness - a bit weird for me in places, but it does hold together pretty well. "Freedom Fighters" is not quite as "poppy" as some reviewers might have you believe. Yeah, it's written in 4/4 time and only lasts about 4 minutes, but it's also a pretty good song. And you kind of need that before the 30-minute-long album closer "The Ikon". This cut is classic prog that runs the gamut from symphonic to spacey (think "Treatise on Cosmic Fire" in spots), to jazz fusion, to Western hoedown! Lots of soloing and jamming combined with clever transitions to new sections.

If you like adventure and a plethora of keyboards in your prog diet, this first unique Utopia album is a great way to escape to musical nirvana. Recommended.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.8/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 8/10; CD length = 9/10.

5 out of 5 stars A Criminally Overlooked Rock Masterpiece!.......2005-09-15

Previous reviewers got it right when they said that mere words cannot convey the awesomeness of this album!

And there is no way that I can write an unbiased review of this.

I must have been 5 or 6 years old, around 1985 or so, when I was flipping through my dad's stack of records.

The cover was so colorful that it immediately drew my attention and I asked to hear it...it has turned out to be the bedrock on which my interests in Music and Esoteric Spiritual topics are based (the liner notes and lyrics for "The Ikon" were some pretty heavy reading for a 5-year old!)

I can't believe it's been 20 years since I heard it and 31 years since it was released.....and it's still THE BOMB!!!

Don't you just want to alternately laugh and puke when you read reviews of this and other albums like it, written by critics who are either unwitting dupes or active participants in the Conspiracy to Keep Rock Dumb?

"Pretentious" - How could it possibly pretend to be anything other than what it really is? MUSIC!

"Self-Indulgent" - Oh, and smashing Hotel rooms, doing lines off of Groupies' chests and dying at 27 isn't?

F-'em...they know NOTHING!!!

So enough sentimental ranting...let's get into a few details.

First, I really should get the Re-Mastered Import of this. I have the CD re-issue on Rhino which is good enough for those new to it, but for maximum sonic wallop, I prefer this album on LP Vinyl (I've got at least 2 copies of them) and played on a good system. The Rhino CD sounds TERRIBLE in comparison!

I know one could only put so much material on a side of vinyl before the sound quality started to suffer, but this doesn't seem to have that problem at all.

So, to conclude:

If you already have this, hell, buy another one! Get both the Rhino and Castle UK imports, as well as a good vinyl copy, and tell us all how they compare.

If you don't have this, and if the reviews here make it sound like it's right up your alley....DO NOT WAIT ANY LONGER!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars In the year 3000 ..........2007-05-14

In the year 3000 (sorry, Conan), most of the human race will still be struggling to acquire the sort of imagination that Todd had in 1974. I am gratified to see so many positive reviews here. It is hard to add anything meaningful to them, except that I take exception to all the grousing about "Chakras" ... it is a stroke of genius, like every other track.

Listening to this record reminds me of how sad it is that we've entered the era of singles downloads. Just the hits, please ... anything my friends are already listening to. Much of the material here simply would not make sense outside the context of the entire record. How can a concept album like this ever be made again?

Can't take the green hair or the lack of uniformity or the surprise in every single track or the oddness of this amazing flight to another universe? Then step to the back of the elevator, where your little comfort zone won't be violated.

Five stars doesn't even begin to rate this.

5 out of 5 stars Don't You Ever Learn?.......2007-03-27

This is a great Todd album with most of the songs being classics. This originally a two record set with poster(the new Japan has the mini poster which also includes a bonus different Wolfman Jack). What a great setlist-I Think You Know/The Spark Of Life, An Elpee's Worth Of tunes, A Dream Goes On Forever, The Last Ride, Everybody's Going To Heaven, Useless Begging, Sidewalk Cafe, Izzat Love, Heavy Metal Kids, and Don't You Ever Learn all being highlights. The basic track for Sons Of 1984 was recorded at the first Utopia concert in Central Park. Many of the songs on here would become concert staples for Utopia in the '70's. A must own for all Todd fans and once again, if you can afford it, go with the Japan JVC issue.

5 out of 5 stars That's No Gospel Choir, That's Me.......2006-08-28

I love this record mostly for one reason. Sons of 1984 was rercorded at a free concert in Central Park, in the middle of one sunny afternoon. It was so great, very casual. I remember just walking in and settling into seats in the front row. Todd was very friendly, everyone got a photocopy of the words to Sons of 1984, Todd practiced it with us till we all knew it and there it is.

That's not all we did at the show of course It was all diehard Todd fans, he played a great show and learning the song and recording it was the most fun of all. I still have the photocopy of the lyrics and I remember waiting and wating and waiting for the record's release. Also for those who don't know this the original LP A Wizard A True Star came with an insert that looked like a band-aid with a poem by Patti Smith. And that's one of the shortcomings of digital downloads. About the only one. Also, I am not old, I was just very very young in 1973.

3 out of 5 stars self indulgent album with 3 gems.......2006-08-07

Welcome to the world of Todd. He was never consistent. Thank god he had a legion of fans that followed him no matter what. It seems like when he made a bad solo album, he made a good Utopia album or produced a good one for someone else.

Most of this is unlistenabe but A dream goes on foreever, dont you ever learn and sons of 1984 are great, great songs.

5 out of 5 stars Todd - a feast of sonic goodness.......2006-01-31

This disc (originally a double LP of 66+ minutes of music)(Rundgren thought it should've been able to fit on one LP) runs the gamut of musical genres. This has some of the sweetest pop music you'll ever hear, and it has some of the hardest rock riffs and the wildest electronica---but that's why we love Todd.

The original liner notes read: "Now, more than ever, turn it up!"

Todd opens with a short crescendo of "synthesizer noise" (in "Fanfare"), goes into a kind of trippy Broadway showtune ("I Think You Know"), and seques into the best headphone music I'd ever heard as of 1974.
Then you learn the man overdubbed himself to create this symphony of sound (impressive by 1974 standards).

Self-awareness and humor follows in the form of "An Elpees Worth of Tunes" and then Rundgren drops a pop-tune masterpiece: "A Dream Goes On Forever." Beautiful and sweet!

There are other crooning delights on the disc, but the song selection really runs through an array of musical stylings. It's a smorgasbord of sonic delight.

"The Last Ride" is a great "breakup" song--and i LOVE the interplay between the saxophone & guitar on this.
"Lowest #1 Common Denominator" is a pure Hendrix homage.
I love "Izzat Love" -- even with its interuptus "fast-forwarding the tape" seque into (then pre-punk) "Heavy Metal Kids."

Buy it. You'll understand why the Rundgren has been tagged divine, a wizard, a true star. You may even find yourself doin' the King Kong Reggae.

5 out of 5 stars A bell in your head will ring.......2007-03-26

This is one of my favorite Todd albums. Classic pop the way only Todd can do it. I've loved this album since way back when and many of the tunes have actually gotten better over time. Starting off with the classic All The Children Sing with it's upbeat melody and funny/cool lyrics which gives way to Todd's last "hit" Can We Still Be Friends. Hurting For You sounds rather like a radio staple but in a good way. Too Far Gone and Determination round out the first half in a big way. Bread starts off side two rocking big time. Bag Lady is a little weak although the "message" is important. You Cried Wolf and Out Of Control rock hard again. Lucky Guy and Fade Away are two of Todd's best ballads. The song listing on the original back album cover was the way Todd wanted the album released but the then label Bearsville had different ideas and with Todd's permission rearranged the playing order with Side One as the Easy Side(for radio play) and Side B as the Difficult Side. If you have the money, go for the Japan import.

5 out of 5 stars Pop doesn't get better than this.......2007-01-26

If I could own only one of Todd's solo works (wouldn't that be tragic) this would be it. This breathtaking album highlights what Todd does best... sing and write great songs. He is my favorite vocalist because you can empathize with him and his passion, depth, and tone are out of this world. You can feel his sorrow when he sings a ballad, laugh during an eccentric number, or sing along on a pop or rock tune. He has a knack to draw you into and be part of the music.

On this release, Todd did all the vocals, instruments, production, and arranging. Usually something suffers when one individual tries to do it all but that's not the case here. A little over 35 minutes long, this disc has twelve catchy songs and zero filler. It's hard to believe this was recorded in 1978, but killer music has no expiration date and this still blows away most modern pop/rock groups. If you have never heard Todd, this would be a good choice to start your journey with one of America's most talented artists.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rundgren.......2005-07-09

Often innovative and acknowledged for pushing musical boundries Hermit of Mink Hollow showcases his music at its most accessible. It is also probably Rundgren's most commercially successful album. The haunting "Can We Still Be Friends?" and the optimistic emotionally powerful "All the Children Sing" are Rundgren classics. There is a cool quirkiness to "Onomatopoeia" and Rundgren tugs at the heart strings with "Hurting for You" and "Determination". A must for any music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Sad pop.......2005-04-20

(4.5 Stars)

After a series of 'difficult' albums in "A Wizard, a True Star", "Todd", and "Initiation", Todd returns to writing pop songs on "The Hermit of Mink Hollow". Well, technically he returned to pop on Side 2 of "Faithful", but anyway..

"All the Children Sing" is cynical and pessimistic, but the sweeping pop chorus and upbeat tempo throughout hide it well.

"Can We Still Be Friends" is one of Todd's most recognized songs; a heartbroken pop ballad at its best. It's full of hooks, and culminates in a gospel-like outro. Perfection.

"Hurting For You" is another great pop ballad in which the melancholy tone of the song is overshadowed by how infectious it is. "Onamotapeta" is goofy fun; a much needed lighthearted moment.

"Determination" is a soulful, powerful pop/rock song, and "Too Far Gone" nicely straddles the line between quirky and deep. Yet another great pop ballad.

"Bread" and "Bag Lady" work side to side as serious pieces of social commentary about famine and homelessness. The former is more of a rocker while the latter is a piano ballad. In fact, "Bag Lady", in my opinion, is one of the finest songs Todd has written. Get the kleenex ready before you listen to it.

Highlights towards the end include the soul-blues-pop (?) of "You Cried Wolf", the blistering rocker "Out Of Control", and the majestic ballad "Fade Away", with its delicate synth washes and graceful tone.

"Hermit" is probably Todd's most ballad heavy album. It's very serious throughout, but the soul searching/melancholy feel throughout is easy to overlook at times due to the strong pop hooks he's crafted. A fantastic album.

5 out of 5 stars I Forgot How Great This Album Is!!!.......2005-04-15

I first picked up this album when it came out on vinyl back in the Spring of 1978 and quickly wore my copy out. I hadn't listened to it in years and, after hearing some Todd on the radio, decided to order a copy of "Hermit" on CD. It still holds up as the best thing that he's ever done. This album jumps around various musical stylings but maintains the Rundgren signature sound on every song. From the Zen message of "All the Children Sing" to the heartbreak of "Can We Still Be Friends" to the child-like playfulness of "Onomatopoeia" to the social commentary of "Bag Lady" to the Motown groove of "You Cried Wolf" (you'd swear it was the Funk Brothers backing this song), to the final release provided by "Fade Away". This is an amazing collection of music and would definitely be placed in my all-time top ten. Buy it, listen, and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars This is THE Todd Rundgren collection to get.......2007-05-10

Todd Rundgren's music career has been a difficult one to digest. He's a very talented songwriter, but he also loves to dabble in the latest technology. So, as a result, he releases a great album and then follows it with some half-baked piece of experimentalism.

That's why THE DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION is so good. It's the first-ever Rundgren collection to just focus on his great songs, and not try and paint a complete picture of his career. So, you don't get "Born to Synthesize" or "An Elpee's Worth of Tunes" but what you do get is the best, most melodic songs Rundgren ever wrote.

Whoever put this collection together was obviously a Rundgren fan. The hits are here, but so are many great album tracks. Even on a dud album, there was usually a good song or two, and this collection finds them. Every Rundgren studio album is represented, up until 1993 and his largely tuneless TR-i phase. We do get "Sweet", a nice return to form pop gem off his latest solo album.

Also a pleasant surprise is the inclusion of several tracks from Rundgren's side-project, Utopia. Again, kudos to the compilers, who smartly omit the band's early prog-rock material and concentrate on the band's catchier songs. Several key Utopia tracks are absent ("Set Me Free" the band's biggest chart hit, and "Feet Don't Fail Me Now" their biggest MTV hit), but those songs didn't feature Rundgren on lead vocals and were left off for that reason.

Although some devout Runt fans will undoubtly complain that one of their favorites is missing, it's difficult to argue with the excellent song selection on THE DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION. Thirty Rundgren songs, and all of them are keepers.

5 out of 5 stars TR: A Master.......2007-03-28

Todd Rundgren will always remain a niche player in the history of rock music, which is a shame considering he has created brilliantly catchy and inventive songs for 30+ years. His music changes with the time, although is remarkably original and hard to be copied. I think you are either a Todd fan or you are not. But even a casual fan might really like this collection of major hits by Todd and his band Utopia. These songs are more radio friendly than some of Todd's more challenging (read: questionable smoke in the studio) 70s songs. This group of songs present a good reflection of Todd's work from the 70s to today, and can lead a casual fan onto a more indepth review of the great pop champion in future albums.

1 out of 5 stars What Was Todd On When He Came Up With This?.......2007-03-28

If there ever was a reason to stay drug-free, Initiation proves it. Todd, easily one of the most gifted songwriters in pop rock history, completely falls off the deep end with Initiation. I'm not going to experiment with what Todd used to come up with this album, but perhaps that means that I won't ever appreciate this album. I'm fine with that--the bizarre album is virtually unlistenable except for the first track. Todd has dozens of classic songs, so even devoted Todd-ees can skip purchasing Initiation and have a real complete disography of his work.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Warning.......2007-03-15

This is one of my all time favorite Todd albums. There isn't a bad song on here and it's unfortunate that at it's release was widely panned. The album also lasts 67 and 1/2 minutes which in the days of lps was quite long. Side one features six songs played mostly with Utopia which was going thru a lineup change at the time. In fact, it was during these sessions that Roger Powell and John "Willie" Wilcox were "asked" to join the band. Side two is made up of the Cosmic Fire segment running 36 minutes. The most known song on here is Real Man which beings the album in fine fashion followed by Born To Synthisize(think of the Grateful Dead's What's Become Of The Baby).Eastern Intrigue is fun which runs into the title track which smokes with some help from early midi stuff. Fair Warning is a cool ballad with great lyrics about an individual's choice in the way things are(I don't like to call it fate as it releaves the person's responsibility for their actions like the song suggests).
I should add that all the songs on here have meaning.Side two is given to an instrumental piece called Cosmic Fire. The best sounding version is again the Japan import

1 out of 5 stars An insult to his listeners.......2007-03-04

Todd Rundgren is part genious, part kid, and part lazy bumb. This work, when contrasted with Lies is pathetic. Using one long song on one side to fill up the album with junk is a slap in the face of his fans.
I love "The Last Ride" but the rest of this album can just be trashed.

2 out of 5 stars Todd throws a curve ball.......2006-08-29

"Real Man" is a terrific opening song and you would think the rest of the album will be of comparable quality and then he gets all crazy and self indulgent.. This is when Todd, I think, was crazy and thought he could do whatever he wanted. Hey Todd! Art should always have an audience and this was brutal.

"Eastern Intrigue" is OK but the rest was really, really bad. It was unlistenable in the psychodelic 70's. Today, it is even worse.

I saw Todd on the LIARS tour and he played "Born to Synthesize" ...yuck...

I am not the artist but as a fan, I am the audience I know what should and should not be played. I am the customer. An artist should play their good songs not their bad songs

Get the song "real man" off of a compilation and stay away from this garbage!

5 out of 5 stars my fave.......2006-07-07

of all the records he's done and the myriad of styles, this is the one that sits atop the pile for me.

why? because it combines in the smoothest way possible the varying aspects of this multi dimensional artist named todd. first, the warbly leadoff single real man deals with issues never before addressed in pop song format. the sound is otherworldly on this whole album and thats another reason it is the best of all. the single has the most haunting deep synth sound i have ever heard and i dare anyone to find another sound like the keyboard sound on this studio verison. its otherworldly.

second, the naked born to synthesize holds up well as a showcase for the effects on todds voice..you can feel the blood running through his veins on this one..into the shimmering death of rock and roll-i was always dissappointed sultan sang this live with utopia but always glad to hear it..the solos here eat your face alive..rock is dead! long live rock! breathtaking around the corners.....

then comes the duo of tunes that stood as singnificant meat nightly in the peak years of utopia..eastern intrigue creates the amazing sounds of incense wafting in the air, sound of an appearing horizon at dawn..again, with the voices and their chants doing amazing things with changing effects on each successive verse..another production and artisitic acheivement never to be matched by another..

then comes the apex of side 1, the title track..where the sonics have been fine tuned to a light string touch over a chugging rhythm section of 2 drummers.the sound on all these tracks is so innovative, there are so records that use the same sounds as todd did here..this title track is a great example...the sound comes in along the edges and is not in anyway standard sounds..todd took a lot of time to perfect these sounds and thats what sets this album further apart from the pack...the solos by roger powell, david sanborn and todd just elevate the heads of all outward.

.then the deep deep soul closer, fair warning actually brought a tear upon first listen when it was released. ill never forget the look on everyones face as the tune tumbled out of the speakers for the first time-we were convinced it was over after this album at time..maybe we were too stoned, i dont know.but i was glad when the next one appeared (faithful). we knew then the mesaage was "find your own way" rather than "its over..."

but side two was where the hardy souls were separated from the sheep...it is a sonic side long experiment that again has no parallels. yes, the krautrock groups and free jazzers have endless freak out whole side stuff, but thats not what this is. many who didnt listen to it were lost..in fact the song death of rock and roll kinda sets it up for you. your only limtation is your own mind and many people checked themselves out of the game upon hearing the synths enter..figuring it to be another shaft goes to outer space..its is not...it is a masterful well planned thematically unified art (of todd and roger) on par with any experimental electronic piece ever written by anyone. anyone. without going into the details, i would urge everyone..even those who say they dont like it already to sit down and play it all the way through. if you make it that far, i know you wont hate it..you may not get it the first play but try again...there are such revelations great music and ideas contained conveyed and compressed in these grooves...made for out of body or deep meditation..this will take you places no music has ever done before and im not saying that from a naive point of view..ive heard a lot of things down the same road and there's nothing that touches this.

todd had a lot to say here and said it all without uttering a word. an artist at the peak of his powers unbound by convention both of structure and sound. every time you hear this record it will amaze you. every time. all you have to do is listen. i dont mean talk through it, i mean really listen. it will change your head for good.

4 out of 5 stars Unique, Not Rocking.......2007-06-27

It sounds like Rundgren, but it is not rocking like his work with Nazz. I wonder if he hoped to write music that induces healing.

That, or maybe it is a rock opera about a healer.

5 out of 5 stars Intensely personal.......2007-05-30

The story behind this album is that it was Todd's way of dealing with a horrible event in his life. One evening, he and his girlfriend (who was pregnant carrying Todd's oldest son at the time) were tied up and robbed in a home invasion robbery. The most horrible part was that the robbers had the gall to taunt him by singing his early hits like "I saw the light" as they ransacked his house and recording studio. This album is about dealing with trauma and tragedy as the title suggests. It is also about becoming a more spiritual person and the difficulties that any "good" person is likely to experience in this world.

Preachy? Maybe. But it beats listening to Gansta Rap.

4 out of 5 stars Soothing.......2005-04-23

(4.5 Stars)

"Healing" is Todd Rundgren's most subdued, meditative, and spiritual sounding album. It's in many ways a continuation of some of the sound explored on the arty "Initiation" and the pop-tastic "Hermit of Mink Hollow", only more refined and conceptual.

Musically, it's very electronic/synthesizer based; don't expect any charging rockers on here. And yeah, this is 1981..so the production does sound dated at times. But it doesn't bother me, given how strong Rundgren's songwriting is.

It begins with the uplifting "Healer", one of the more pop based songs on here (although still retaining the spiritual feel of the album).

"Pulse" has a rich electronica backdrop; very 80's sounding with all the blips and bleeps (and even synthesized handclaps), but very good too. "Flesh", on the other hand, is a bit more subdued and ethereal.

"Golden Goose", like everyone else has said, does not fit in at all with the rest of the album. It's goofy, and borders on novelty throughout. Not that's it's bad; it just doesn't belong on here.

"Compassion" is the most known song on here, if any. It's one of Todd's greatest ballads. Gorgeous sounding, introspective, meaningful, and it has a great hook too.

Even better is "Shine", a lengthy song that begins as a slow piano ballad before erupting into a total synthesizer hailstorm; the techno/dance beat is backed by euphoric, soulful vocals (gospel like, even) from Todd.

Finally, the "Healing" suite, which is composed of three parts. It retains the entire mood of the album: meditative, spiritual, soothing, etc..all the adjectives I've already used. It's atmospheric and lush for the majority, although it turns more pop towards the end. Another stunning composition.

As a bonus, you get "Time Heals" and "Tiny Demons" tacked on at the end. This was not part of the album (a single, rather), but lyrically they aren't out of place. The former is a new wave-ish pop song (one of the catchiest, most infectious things Todd has written, actually) while the latter is one of Todd's most haunting ballads.

"Healing" is often overlooked, making it a sort of lost gem in Todd's catalogues. Don't pass it up due to obscurity, it's excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable!.......2004-05-15

I bought this album in 1981. I was 15, and "Healing" was one of the very first albums I bought with my own money. That's how crazy I am! And I liked it then, just as I like it now. No matter how many times I hear it, I am still taken by surprise due to its uniqueness and originality. There is no other album quite like it. It does have something in common with its predessessor, the excellent "Hermit Of Mink Hollow", but it's also very different. I like to think of "Hermit" as DAY and "Healing" as NIGHT.
This album has atmosphere! It's loaded with synths and drum machines, but don't let that scare you. Just be aware that "Healing" is very personal, spiritual, and about as idiosyncratic as it's possible for a pop album to be. My favourite track is "Shine". This song means so much to me! It is, in my opinion, a good candidate for the definitive Todd Rundgren song. Mystical, futuristic, soulful and incredibly intense. The 20-minuite long "Healing"- suite is great, even if i sometimes think part II is a bit too long. But that depends on what mood I'm in.
Still, I agree with some other reviewers, that track number 4, "Golden Goose" is out of place somehow. As a vinyl release, "Time Heals" b/w "Tiny Demons" came as a free, additional single to the album. If I could choose, the single would have been "Time Heals" b/w "Golden Goose". And "Tiny Demons" would have been track number 4 on the actual album. I use to program my disc that way, since I think it makes a tremendous improvement. Try it yourself!
For me, "Healing" will remain an album I return to frequently. This is one I will play at the oldies house!

When it comes to talk about Rundgren's music,it's always referred to with the same items :A WIZARD...,SOMETHING...Well,I'm OK with that but the truth is I really can't understand the reason why HEALING is never talk about as one of his best albums along with WIZARD(my all time favorite by the way).Yet it's an amazing disc, and for me,the best production job he ever did .It has a feeling no other number of his discography matches and that really means a lot!Music of unknown origin!

2 out of 5 stars Rehash.......2007-05-29

While I never understood - at the time, and much less on a grander scale through the ages till now - why anybody would dare attempt to recut/top the Beach Boys' slice of acclaimed ultimate pop perfection, GOOD VIBRATIONS. Believe me - Todd Rundgren got huge amounts of airplay for his faithfull note-for-note remake, but still - what was his point other than being a fan? We're all fans. In the 70's, it was considered "cool" on both sides of the stage to 'remake' an oldie, and yes, a significant amount of the 'remakes' recharted higher than the originals and in turn created huge album sales for the respective artists involved. [I do recall that mid 70's "All This And WWIII" Compilation tribute by then current highly popular Top 40 and "up & coming" artists.] Still...TODD RUNDGREN, being the Pop Genius that he'd become by the time his SOMETHING/ANYTHING tour-de-force Lp in the early 70's, appeared to be wasting vinyl here. Half this album appears to be the predecessor to all the "remake tribute albums" many popular artists[Pop/R&B/Country] would attempt to pull off in the late 80's and throughout the 90's decade, to varying degrees of success. For some artists, it became the kiss of death. All these years[decades] later, it seems Todd Rundgren had already charted the half-baked waters in the sun, because he rarily, if at all, conquered the Top 40 Radio Charts again after his much celebrated and played at the time, 'Good Vibrations' remake.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums from Rundgren.......2006-12-25

Back in the days of vinyl, the second side of this album, which is the original material, rates as one of great album sides. The songs from begining to end are top notch. As usual for Todd Rundgren, the songs move through a wide range of emotions and styles. There are two ripping rockers in this collection, "Black and White" & "Boogies (Hamburger Hell)". Todd Rundgren was so talented, in so many areas, that he never really gets the credit as truely one of the great rock and roll guitar players. These two songs are great examples of his ability to flat out shred on the guitar.

One thing to realize, is that there were two verions of his group Utopia. This album was between those two incarnations and has three of the four members from the 2nd incarnation performing on it. It is only missing Kazim Sultun (what a great addition it would be). So this shapes up as a precursor for the 2nd incarnation of Uptopia.

The four songs that make up the rest this side of the album are all solidly written songs. "Love of the Common Man" & "The Verb To Love" are as good as any of Rundgren's vast array of material and hommages to love.

As for the first side of the album, these are a collection of cover tunes. What makes it unique is the selection as well as their recording technique. The songs are from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Vintage Beach Boys (Good Vibrations) and the Yardbirds (ala Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page!!). All of these are giants in Rock and Roll. But the songs selected all have some unusual record engineering approaches and are no small feat to repoduce "faithfully". This is what Rundgren set out to do with these songs. And he did. A testament to his abilities. As a recording engineer, I can tell you this is very impressive. And they are great selection of tunes, all time rock classics, covered by a great artist.

5 out of 5 stars Covers: Meh. Originals: OMGZ!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-04-15

"Faithful" is half covers, half new songs. Unfortunately, the point of the covers seemed to be for Todd to show off his studio wizardry. He tries to perfect them note-for-note, and does a good job. I'm not bashing them, but I've never been big on covers albums to begin with.

Luckily, there's Side 2. All Todd originals, and after the bizarre trips of "A Wizard, a True Star" and "Todd", he's surprisingly back in pop mode again.

"Black and White" is a superb rocker with strong enough hooks to keep it a pop song as well. "Love of the Common Man" is probably Todd's greatest song..ever. Downbeat, sad, beautiful..yet mid-tempo and catchy. Simply euphoric.

"When I Pray" is pretty weird, actually. Todd singing in a strange accent; Afro-Cuban instrumentation. But it's so damn catchy. 'Yah yah you..', indeed.

The accoustic based "Cliche" is another Todd classic ballad; it's heartbreaking and gorgeous. "The Verb To Love" is an epic, majestic soul ballad with slight touches of psychedelia (glistening synthesizers) and jazz (the jazzy piano break in the middle). It's another Todd classic, jeez.

Finally, "Boogies (Hamburger Hell)". Any song that features the lyric "Two all beef patties, special sauce lettuce pickle cheese onion on a sesame seed bun" cannot be taken too seriously..but it's a deliciously (no pun intended) catchy rocker.

Side 2 is so good, that I still give the album 5 stars, even though the covers are skippable. Todd churns out classics like a machine on here. Not to be missed.

Also, as a sidenote, many people mistake this as one of Todd's one man band efforts in which he did everything himself. Well, he did a lot himself as usual, but he does have his Utopia bandmates (that's Kasim Sulton, Willie Wilcox, and Roger Powell) backing him here on bass, drums, and keyboards.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant on MANY levels!.......2005-03-12

Rundgren was on a roll like no other Rocker throughout the entire 70's! While he is still, in my opinion, very relevent in 21st Century music, Something/Anything, Wizard, Todd, Faithful and Hermit (his solo recordings circa 1972/1978)ALL are Five Star records!

The name of this record is a Double Entendre. Most obvious is the reference relating to side one in which Rundgren presents us with an entire side of spot on covers. And again I think there are two meanings here...1) Rundgren pays homage to the music and musicians that have infulenced him and his music and, 2) Todd once again getting to flex his musical muscle and show everyone on the planet, "He don't need no stinkin' band mates!" No producer, Recording Engineer and probably even janitor too!LOL

The second meaning of Faithful, at least for me, is a reference to the tone of the songs on side two. In my opinion "Love of the Common Man," "Cliche" and "The Verb To Love" are three of Rundgren's strongest, and must beautiful, odes to Love. Commitment, FAITHFULness being the cornerstone of Love. Almost THIRTY years later I still CAN NOT listen to "Love of the Common Man" just once. Godd, the guitar riffs, the vocals, the MESSAGE... While Todd mastered the perfect Power Pop tune on "S/A" I think THIS song in all of Todd's canon is my favorite!

While I'm going to stick with my 5 Star rating, I think this record would have been better, NOT without the covers, but WITH more originals. I just wish that Rundgren could have given us a full LP's Worth of (original) Tunes. Because as Wonderful as the covers are, the Todd penned songs are Some of the VERY BEST this master of Rock & Roll ever created!

5 out of 5 stars Don't You Ever Learn?.......2004-01-16

So many folks don't get it about side 1 of this album. It wasn't just a tribute, or the whole project would have been covers. The point is, Todd was always capable of doing anything anyone else did. That's why he was successful in working in the studio with such a diverse group of artists. At the same time he needed to express himself in his own unique style, all the while tryin' to make a living off an L.P.'s worth of tunes. "Faithful" is still one of my favorite efforts by an oft misunderstood genius. Don't judge it just enjoy it.
