Even as the Beatles began heading toward an inevitable breakup, their prolific ways continued; this two-disc look back only skims the surface of their later achievements. Excerpts from Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, the white album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be compete for space with classic singles that do as much or more to prove their eclecticism: the epic ballad "Hey Jude," the plaintive "Strawberry Fields Forever," straight rock & roll of all stripes from the plainspoken "Revolution" and "Get Back" to the surreal "Come Together." Decades after the split, this (and its companion set of 1962-1966 cuts) remains a favored introduction for young listeners and a key sampler for veteran fans. --Rickey Wright

This fixes the Beatles #1 mistake.......2007-07-17
Their mistake was including Revolution1 on the white album instead of the catchy faster Revolution that can be found on the blue album. That makes this worth buying if you don't want to get it on past masters volume two.
The "hit machine" continues to strike.......2007-04-29
This band was amazing, I am to young to have been part of it, but I do feel like I was there when I listen to this band. This band will never be forgotten. So many classic hits they have produced !
Once again, a great Starter kit.......2007-03-08
Like I said with the review for the Red album, if you're just getting into the Beatles, no better place to start. Listen to it for the course of about 2-3 months and once you get the idea of what they're about and the direction of their music, then you can branch off onto the albums like "Revolver", "Sgt. Peppers", "Abbey Road", etc. you won't regret it for the rest of your life.
If there was anything a person can do in their life, getting into the Beatles could defintely be one of the best (and smartest)choices you'll ever have to make
when the psychedelic counterculture hijacked the Top 40.......2007-01-14
The BLUE and RED ALBUMS make more sense to me now than they did in when they were first compiled in 1973. At the time, it just seemed like a blatant marketing move, but that was when many of us were immersed in Beatles albums, and would not settle for a "superficial greatest hits." In reality they were always indispensable because they included so many great singles that were not on the regular albums.
CDs changed the way we listen to music (you don't have to get up and change sides every 20 or 30 minutes, and you can program out cuts you don't want to hear), and while you can of course create your own collection, this is pretty close to perfection as a hit singles highlights gets for the late Beatles. Perfect for driving! These discs only contain about 60 minutes of music, and it could be 80, but by the 1990s the 1973 collections were classics themselves. I can't give the set less than 5 stars considering the music that it DOES include!
Personally, one of my gripes was always that REVOLVER should have been in the BLUE ALBUM so that all the late psychedelic music would be together. Some other ideas to make what is nearly perfect even better --
1) Substitute George's "It's All Too Much" for "Lucy In the Sky." George's great song ended up stuck on YELLOW SUBMARINE, but it was part of the SGT. PEPPER'S sessions, and is a much better song than LSD. 2) Move "A Day in the Life" so that it follows "With a Little Help From My Friends". 3) In the animal department, substitute Paul's "Blackbird" from the WHITE ALBUM for "Octopus's Garden." 4) Substitute John's "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" from the WHITE ALBUM for John's "The Ballad of John & Yoko," a non-album single which I never liked. The former is Lennon at his subversive best, and the song works just as well with Iraq as the backdrop as it did with Vietnam. 5) Substitute Paul's "Two of Us" from LET IT BE for George's "Old Brown Shoe," a non-album single. 6) Substitute John's "Rain," a non-album single (B-side to "Paperback Writer" from 1966, currently available only on PAST MASTERS, Vol. 2), for Paul's reggae-influenced "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da."
The late Beatles worked on multiple levels, and what was just immaculate pop to some represented emerging higher consciousness to others. Those seeds of enlightenment are still in the music, and we need them more than ever!
500,000,000 record executives just couldn't be wrong.......2006-10-22
The Beatles' "Blue Album" celebrates their talent by boasting nothing but just some of their infamous hits from the years 1967-1970. These songs come from several of the greatest rock albums of all time including Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles ("The White Album"), Abbey Road and Let It Be. The Beatles' "Blue Album" both proves their genius and demonstrates their singular talent that no other band can replicate.
The two CD set allows us to realize that The Beatles wrote many different types of songs with different styles. This is also essential music that offers something for just about anyone who listens to the two CD set. The first CD starts off strong with the popular and psychedelic "Strawberry Fields Forever," other psychedelic and experimental songs include "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and "I Am The Walrus." There are beautiful ballads celebrating love including "All You Need Is Love" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." The Beatles also address the angst of a love that is no longer in the songs "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "The Long And Winding Road." Finally, the band sings songs that are just plain fun including "Octopus's Garden" and "Back In The U.S.S.R."
Another reviewer makes an excellent point: If you want to understand the sharp differences in style between John Lennon and Paul McCartney at this time in their careers there is no better comparison than between "Hey Jude," which is an classic ballad indeed, and "Revolution," which is rather conceited, smug and bitter all at once.
The Beatles' use of the unconscious when writing trippy songs like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "A Day In The Life" enabled them to reach out to their fans and ultimately the world. The lyrics make sense even when they make no sense; this only adds to the beauty of the more psychedelic, trippy songs. Moreover, the songs on this two CD set work so well because they address universal themes of wanting to be loved, celebrating love and mourning a lost love.
The liner notes boast the lyrics to each song and great color photos of the band. The liner notes include the song credits, too.
Indeed, The Beatles were so prolific in their writing and performing that this two CD set barely skims the surface of what they truly accomplished between the years 1967 and 1970. If you like this CD set I highly recommend you buy individual Beatles' albums to discover more about the band's creativity and boldness.
Overall, this two CD set is more than just an introductory retrospective of The Beatles' music during the turbulent late 1960s. The "Blue Album" celebrates The Beatles' ability to communicate their political beliefs and amorous feelings for other people through their songs. These songs remind us to understand and appreciate the blessings of love, the evils of war and the importance of world peace--now.
I highly recommend this CD for Beatles fans, fans of great 1970s rock music and anyone who wants to experience how The Beatles taught us what was right through their music. This two CD set is a must have for any Beatles' collector as well as for anyone who wants to study the history of rock and roll.

Technical Flaws.......2007-07-04
Always nice to hear the Moodies. It's just so dissapointing to hear songs recorded ,what I would call, unprofessionally. Tracks ending abruptly. Fading in or out at the wrong places. Canned music, blended in, is not exciting. But, It's got a lot of great moments and brings back good memories. Voices aren't always great but I guess there wasn't a lot of material to choose from.
Forty-one tracks for your pleasure. Are you sitting comfortably? .......2007-06-19
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
They earned the title "Magnificent Moodies" early on. The assemblage of the BBC tracks only further solidifies the reward. While the double package is called "Live At The BBC 67-70" there is more! The second disc is audio from TV tapings.
If you are a collector of must have Moody Blues recordings this entered the list the second it left the factory. For those that purchased some of their material in the past it will give you another side of the band. The track listings couldn't be a better representation of the collective genius from the group. Not only are the hits and radio tracks available for your enjoyment but some of the more esoteric and underrated tunes ("Best Way To Travel", "Visions Of Paradise, and "The Actor"). "Best Way To Travel" has never received the acclaim it deserves. While previously tracks were available as a bonus on special SACD pressings, this gives it to you in the full and proper dose.
Before we check out some of their superlative versions of their own material it must be written how great the cover of the Animals hit "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was constructed.
The back-to-back combination of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Ride My See-Saw" offers enough exquisite beauty to enthrall the harshest critic but "Lovely To See You (With the acoustic guitar sounding as if it is in your living room) could accelerate the pulse of the most docile individual.
As you sample the choice cuts don't forget to digest the short version of "Nights In White Satin" clocking in a shade over three minutes."
Could you ever get enough versions of "Gypsy"? Its inclusion here only solidifies it's golden splendor.
Forty-one tracks for your pleasure. Are you sitting comfortably?
Enjoy the music and be well,

Good Sounding Moody Blues Stuff!!.......2007-06-12
I was waiting for this 2 cd set to come out for a long, long, time. The sound is pretty good and the song selection is excellent for the time it was recorded. At least on this BBC recording, unlike other BBC live recordings, it doe not have an announcer before each song with on occasion, a one question interview with a band member. I find that part unnecessary and am glad its not on this set. The only problem I have with this set is the editing. Moody Blues songs usually have great endings to their songs but on this release the endings are cut off and an audience applause in put in rather bluntly at times which cheapens the recordings. The sound is great for a BBC live set-average stereo but the songs seem cut off and shortened in places--- I guess to save room for other songs. This results in the whole song version not heard at times. That is probably the only thing wrong with this 2 cd set. It ought to be re-edited and the songs presented the way they were played--take out a few if you have to but lets keep the original song in. Despite this problem, I recommend this set highly. Do not let it get away. Enjoy Moody fans!!!!!!!!!! Good linear notes and pictures also.
Historic stuff.......2007-06-01
If you have the new SACD special editions of the "core 7" original albums you've already heard most of these tracks. They were added as "special material" to those releases. However, as the other poster mentioned if you didn't want to spring the big money for albums you already own here they are, collected on two discs. The quality is no great shakes for the most part - mostly mid-range and brittle highs, but these date from over thirty years ago, and for radio to boot. The performances in many cases are a bit suspect as well; in some cases the instrumental sections sound identical to the studio versions with live vocals added. I think the Moodies did occasionally do this, considering how dense their studio recordings were it's no wonder. Other tracks however are totally live . . . they're ragged compared to the studio counterparts but have a wonderful energy that makes them a treasure on their own terms.
The studio albums are definitely the best way to acquaint one's self with these songs if you haven't already, but for the hardcore fan this is a very worthwhile release to add to the library.
A Christmas Gift Long Overdue!.......2007-05-26
Just as I was about to post a scathing review criticising the way the BBC material was spread out among the new deluxe editions, I saw this upcoming release and smiled. It's like waking up one morning and finding a gift from some Christmas long ago that you knew was there but couldn't find. For years I have been wondering why the Moodies haven't released their BBC sessions like artists such as Hendrix, Cream, Jack Bruce, The Who, The Beatles, Zeppelin, and even Kaleidoscope have done. Then I saw that they were releasing the material but you have to buy the original albums (which most of us have done more than once)again to get it all. Finally, in one complete volume, is everything that was salvaged from the vaults. It's like the Moodies reunited completely, jumped in a time machine, and made a new album for a new millenium. I am giddy in expectation of this collection!

Composer, arranger, and producer Quincy Jones was a youthful veteran of pop, jazz, and r&b when he began creating film and television music in the late '60s, and he brought those lessons to bear on vivid, contemporary music that broke from Hollywood's dependence on conventional orchestration. Although not the first film composer to lean heavily on jazz, Jones was unusually versatile in effectively coupling jazz, blues, and soul accents as he did in the brooding, bluesy score for 1968's In The Heat Of The Night, a detective thriller starring Sidney Poitier, and noteworthy for a terrific main title song featuring Ray Charles. This double package adds the album to the film's sequel, but it's still the Night you'll want to savor. --Sam Sutherland

"Mister Tibbs" is the thing........2000-03-31
For me, although "In the Heat of the Night" had a fine score, "They Call Me Mister Tibbs!" is the main attraction here. The "Main Title" is memorable, vintage Jones R&B/soul; "Soul Flower" is a mellow but swinging track that I can never listen to just once; and "Blues for Mister Tibbs" is a funky Hammond organ rendition of the title track. To me, Jones' work on this film is at least equal to Isaac Hayes' towering "Shaft." A must for anyone who appreciates Jones as a composer.
Great soundtrack, except for 3 vocal tracks.......2000-01-14
Vintage swinging-60s soundtracks with great instrumental tracks.
However, the vocal and country music tracks throw off the flow of the CD. Program out bumpkin tracks 10 (Bowlegged Polly) and 19 (Foul Owl) as well as terrible pseudo-swinging track 9 (It Sure is Groovy).

THE STERLING MAESTRO THAT IS SCOTT WALKER.......2006-08-03
For those of us who are deep-steeped in the melodrama of burnished velvet orchestral movements and silver-tongued balladry of the accomplished troubadour, this compilation of Scott Walker's earlier solo work is necessitous and elemental. Originally released in 2000, the 20 compositions featured on this album are a tremendous introduction to Walker's work from 1967-1970 (before his flirtation with country/western in the 70's and his more complex exploratories from 1995 on). The tracks, in chronological order, illustrate Walker's progression from structured ballad to insightful narrative and ultimately to the roots of his recondite extractions. The swirling melodies bowed by swelling strings, the distant echoes of lustrous choruses, the unwavering vibrato--it's a thicker liquor that doesn't just get you drunk, it gets you reciting Yeats and Auden before you pass out.
And if this is all too much for you, there are other reasons to buy this CD. Because you like Pulp/Jarvis Cocker/Richard Hawley, Divine Comedy (Neil Hannon pens the introduction in the liner notes), Nick Cave, Serge Gainsbourg, and the like. Because you want an art-tinged credibility to your existing music collection. Because you're tired of predictable pop tarts and mommy-rock and you need something more gourmet and less burger bar. Do yourself a favor--put down the boy band and give the boy child a respectable listen.
I wish they included his Brell covers on this album........2005-05-28
I know this album is to be a showcase of only Walker originals and a separate album of all Brell covers was released but this was a marketing ploy that did not celebrate what I will call the "Walker mystique."
The "Walker mystique," if I may dare lay claim to understanding it, is a world-weary voice that sparkles with experience and cynicism and yet suprises you with moments of beauty that seem almost naive. Walker appears never to have forgotten the wonder of the young child and this is best expressed in his song "Plastic Palace People." I suppose you could argue that song is the embodiment of the "Walker mystique." By turns magisterial in vocal, sweeping in imagery and dark in undertone, the song propels forward a vision at once many things: there is Walker the child who knows the freshness of beauty in the world and manages, mysteriously, to apprehend it, once more, for the first time. There is Walker the cynic who knows there are people in the world who are just "plastic" and conceal themselves. There is Walker the sage who has heard, one too many times, the line, "Billy/ come down from there." He won't come down from there and that is why you need to hear him.
I single out this song because it is signature Walker but is also indebted to his Brell covers. There is nothing plagiaristic here, one need simply to note that these themes are all Brell's too and Walker recasts them in a voice so characteristically his own; original and so devious. Walker can sing ugliness like it is beauty and make the delicate and ethereal seem seedy and adulterated. Brell did this too but Walker's gentleness and meat-cleaver fist can offer a double-fisted assault unique among English language performers.
Having said all of this, I wonder how songs like "It's Raining Today," The Girls From The Streets" and "Big Louise" can be heard without having first listened to Walker sing Brell's "Mathilde," "Jackie," "If You Go Away," "Next" and "Funeral Tango." I am not suggesting Walker is merely a derivative of Brell, not at all. I am only proposing that he has distilled the better angels of Brell's material and let it infuse the very best in his own songwriting. Buy this record as an addendum to the four "Scott" albums. I think you will see what I mean.
Four stars. It almost makes it there and this under-reach is hardly the fault of Scott himself.
Bergman in Vegas.......2005-03-31
I'll admit Scott Walker is an acquired taste. Here 60's MOR meets the avant-garde. Walker's songs have all the big brass & string production of a vintage Bacharach tune, saddled with lyrics that are closer to Leonard Cohen than Hal David.
Vocally, he comes across like a reluctant Vegas crooner with the heart of Ingmar Bergman sliding off his sleeve. Sinatra or Bobby Darrin with a serious case of literary pretention. If you ever thought The Seventh Seal needed a theme song, you'll find it here. The Plague takes Albert Camus' novel & sets it to a moody dance groove. The results are more winning that you think.
Elsewhere, Walker corners the market on manic-depressive waltzes. Bedsit rainy sundays, carosels & after-hours boulevard ennui are some of Walker's tradmark fare. Among the most effective are Montague Terrace, Copenhagen & It's raining Today.Girls From The Streets takes its cue from Jaques Brel and on Time Operator he comes off like an existential Sinatra.
Most of what Walker's cult status is based on is here. There's always room to quibble, but this is truely a "best of" in my book. Granted, Walker's lyrics can can be a bit too pretentious for their own good. His brand of purple prose isn't for everyone & combined with decidedly dated production values, some songs come off as unintentionally hilarious. Plastic Plalace People being a case in point. But when all is said & done, it's Walker's rich, eerie baritone that lures you in. You could shell out for the poorly packaged Mercury box set, or pick this up. Truth be told, outside of buying Scott's I-IV, this is all you need of his classic years. Though, if you like this, I'd also heartily recommend his album of Jacques Brel covers. All of which may prepare you for the bizarre heights of Climate Of Hunter, Tilt & The Drift. But that's another story.
This is the place to start.......2004-10-20
If you are interested in hearing what the fuss is about, start here. All Scott.
Long Lost Summers.......2004-08-19
Tired of the occasionally great yet essentially derivative Walker Brothers formula, Scott Engel kept his stage name in a solo career which whilst eventually sending him off into obscurity, also all too briefly showed a songwriting talent of startling originality and skill. Backed by immense yet bleak walls of orchestrated sound, Scott's heavenly 'croon' (it is often described so, but deserves much more) pours out melancholic lyrics of genuine genius. Believe me- its the real deal, sometimes too intense to bear.
This compilation takes many highlights from his 4 eponymous LPs, as well as rescuing prize cuts from ''Til the Band Comes In'. The perfect place to start before becoming immersed in Scott-dom, almost all of the best cuts are here (from 'It's Raining Today' and 'War Is Over' to 'The Plague' and 'Montague Terrace...and 'On Your Own Again'...and 'Angels Of Ashes'... in fact, i could spend forever listing the highlights, as there is barely a dud track. Just one problem- where's 'Rosemary' form 'Scott 3'?
An acknowledged influence on acts from Pulp and Radiohead to Julian Cope and The Divine Comedy, Scott Walker made some of the most original and touching music of the 60's. THIS is the place to start.

Jim Morrison -'The Ultimate Collected Spoken Words:1967-1970' (Ozit).......2006-04-08
Never have been much into interview CD's,but this 2-CD/100 minute release is a good one.Features six different interviews, with plenty of the time Jim Morrison giving ridiculously funny answers to questions that he's asked. The two interviews I liked best were his comments on the "Isle Of Wight Festival,1970" (15:50)and "New Orleans...Very Strange" (35:59). It's apparent that Morrison was on 'something' during these sessions. Well, duh! Strictly for the completists and the spoken word collectors.
Understanding Jim.......2002-03-21
Okay, I haven't actaually heard everything on this album, but I have heard most of it. The Isle of Wight interview is very well done. Here, you'll hear Jim Morrison give his opinions of Woodstock, Doors merchandize and you'll also hear Joe Cocker in the background. On "All Day Breakfast" we hear Jim being followed around L.A. Well this is going on, you'll hear Jim giving his opinions on the sessions for "Morrison Hotel" and "L.A. Woman." A casual Doors fan may find this bizzare, funny or even boring but hardcore Doors fans (like me) will be rewarded by getting to know a bit about Jim Morrison from the man himself. Myself, I was surprised at how intellegent he can be at times. Also, an interesting bit of trivia, this album was packaged by the guy who did the cover for "Led Zeppelin III."

wonderful!.......2007-03-10
So much early John Hartford music on one CD. This CD captures the lust for adventure in all of us. I have every thing John Hartford has ever recorded. He is missed. This CD is great.
Great for Hartford fans.......2007-01-06
Ok, I am a John Hartford fan. Wish the CD quality was more "real" but I feel that way about a lot of these recent transfers. His talent shines through even the worst of the selections but don't look for star quality performances here. The highlight is John's writing, not his singing voice. And as a writer, he is poetic and profound.
The best of Early John Hartford.......2003-02-17
I've loved and listened to John for years but never heard his early stuff which was recorded on vinyl and long out of print. If that's you, then this is the album you should buy. If you have never heard John singing such numbers as'Corn Cob Blues" or 'Shiny Rails of Steel' or the version of 'Gentle on my Mind' which are on this disc, then here's a treat in store for you. Highly recommended.
it's about time!.......2002-09-18
This release offers more tracks than the RCA Legends CD, many of which are not available elsewhere. This is from the time when many of us were introduced to John, plucking that banjo in the audience on the Glen Cambell show. No, it's not bluegrass. It's Jimmy Stewart meets Bob Dylan! I don't know what it is, but it's great listening. The Country Legends disc is probably stronger, song for song, but the quality here is good, and a lot of fans would probably want both CD's. My favorite album "Gentle on my Mind and other Originals" is well-represented here. Go for it.
who is this guy?.......2002-08-01
John Hartford doesn't seem to be able to decide whether he is a banjo player or a singer or a composer. but he is one of the few who can play the banjo and sing at the same time (unless that's some trick of the recording). "Gentle on my mind" is major; the rest of it is a mixed bag.

Hard to believe, but the composer of the driving, action-packed score to Robert Aldrich's World War II-themed hit, The Dirty Dozen, is the same Frank DeVol responsible for such bubbly TV fare as Family Affair and My Three Sons. The composer's light, playful touch can be felt throughout the Dozen score, too, giving the adventure and dramatic action a welcome human dimension. Jeff Alexander has a comparably eclectic résumé, having scored Elvis films, worked with Frank Sinatra, served as an arranger on Singin' in the Rain and done a slew of TV work (including a stint alongside DeVol at Family Affair). His efforts here for Burt Kennedy (a director renowned for his masterful comic touch in the Western genre) and the Sinatra-starring romp Dirty Dingus Magee are frequently nothing short of an open comic delight, a lighthearted lampoon of hoary clichés. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
WATCH OUT - this box has wrong track on disc 2.......2006-07-06
I've written glowing reviews of UM/Hip-O's 3 box set series of the complete Bob Marley & Wailers - what an incredible job they did gathering every known track and dub from 1966-1972.
(the other 2 sets are "Grooving Kingston 12" and "Fy-ah Fy-ah") BUT, this set unfortunately has a track on disc 2 (This Train)listed as the Pouder Version that is actually the Wail'n'Soul'm Version that already apperared on disc 1! I e-mailed UM about this and was told to return my set to them for a new one - when I did, I got back one with the same mastering mistake and a promo cut thru the bar-code. What a drag that they messed up such a great set.
A worthy mention.......2006-03-22
i love this album. it is a relief from all the common bob marley songs and since im a fanatic it was just wat i need to add to my collection. there are very good songs by peter tosh as well which makes u wonder why isnt he just as celebrated as bob. wicked album!
Finally!!!.......2004-12-02
I've Been Wondering how long this was going to reach! I got mine today, and seeing how Im the first reviewer, Ill tell you what to expect. First off, for the big fans, you probably already have the majority of these songs, from the JAD COLLECTION 1967 -1972, so this might not even be exciting and new for you. But for me some of the songs that I dont have from the JAD COLLECTION 1967-1972. But One noticable difference is "Hypocrites" If the one you're used to is from the songs of freedom set, well this one is different from it. Some of the songs do tend to fade out a little bit earler than from the Songs Of Freedom set. The volume of the disc itself is more louder, the quality as well, the book, which is mainly what I look for, since I do have the majority of the songs, is full of new bits, not much, but good enough to hold me over till the next one comes out. The other little additions are that they add a little more Peter Tosh songs than the Previous Jad collection, (as you know that some of these songs that were on THIS NEW COLLECTION was also on the older JAD Collection). This is (for those who dont know) is the official release, meaning that Bob Marley's Family, Peter Tosh's Family, & Bunny Wailer, get royalties from these releases. So people DONT, DONT, DONT, buy those poor quality, cheap, bootleg copies that have been out there since Bob Marley has been famous. Get the real thing. Highly Recommended.
