3 out of 5 stars Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars On connaît tous sa musique, beaucoup moins son nom..........2005-09-20

5 out of 5 stars Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Whitney's Last Decent CD.......2007-06-02

It is hard to believe that it is approaching the 20-year mark since this CD was released. My, oh my, how time changes things. Back then, Whitney was at the top of her game: gorgeous face, incredible voice, and a life of endless luxury and happiness. But now, Whitney is a mere shell of her former self. Nearly 20 years in a stormy relationship, add to that her drug addiction and overall instability, and what we now have is just plain sad. I loved Whitney back in 1990, and I am so sad for her now. So sad for what should have been, but apparently was never meant to be. Hopefully, one day Whitney will come back to the real world, admit how she majorly screwed up with her life, and try to pick herself up again and move forward...reclaiming the glory that I am sure is still waiting for her.

I miss you, Whitney. We all do.

5 out of 5 stars Whitney's 3rd Arista album very excellent!!!.......2007-02-03

I'm Your Baby Tonight was Whitney Houston's 3rd album with Arista. It was released in 1990 and contains some great songs on it. Why is this title discontinued? What is the reason for it to not be available anymore? That is what's peculiar here. Whatever the reason as to why this title is not available anymore is anyone's guess. It doesn't make any sense to me as to why this title is discontinued. There are some songs on this title that I like. The title track, My Name is Not Susan, Anymore, Miracle, All the Man That I Need, After We Make Love, and I'm Knockin' are the song titles on this album that I like. The front cover picture of Whitney sitting on the seat of the motorcycle is a great one. To the folks at Arista: Please reissue this title back to fans of Whitney's so that they will have a chance to enjoy it again. Whitney fans: Until this album is reissued, you'll just have to bear with getting it used.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked But Very Good.......2006-11-28

This album was released in 1990 and was Whitney's third album. It didn't quite match the expectations of her previous two, although five singles were released and were all top 20 and the album a third place on the album charts. Some would go as far as calling it a lackluster but I'm ready to disagree. It did eventually sell 4 million copies and a few of the songs here are very good. Compared to her first two, "I'm Your Baby Tonight" is miles after though. The producer list is impressive, L.A Reid and Babyface, Stevie Wonder, Narada Michael Walden wrote a whole lot of songs, Luther Vandross produced and appear on backround vocals also. Walter Affansieff on keyboards. He would later write loads of songs for Mariah Carey! and Kenny G on saxophone. What could go wrong?

At the time of this release Whitney just had massive success and had been mentioned in the same lines as Janet Jackson and Madonna. This album had something missing perhaps, there was no uptempo dance song like "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" from her last album and neither did it have the same variety as the latter. This follows the same path more or less with it's 11 songs. Many power ballads, some midtempo soul and then a few hip hopish pop songs but it still lacked the songs for a megastar Whitney had become. Although it's far from a bad album. Many of the songs, the singles in particular are very strong. Let's take a look.

Babyface/Reid wrote the first song, title track, midtempo "I'm Your Baby Tonight" a song about a woman that will do anything for her man. It reached #1 on the billboard charts in 1990. Perhaps the best song of this album. "My Name Is Not Susan" only reached #20 and was a chart dissapointing. It sound a little like Janet Jackson's songs at the same time. It's an uptempo where her boyfriend calls her Susan and mistake her for his ex. Perhaps more famous when Salt N Pepa sampled it for "What a Man". Kenny G helped her out on "All the Man That I Need" which also reahed #1 on the charts. This was a Sister Sledge cover, but Houston's version is top class. "Lover For Life" is forgettable even if Whitney's vocal range is always good. "Anymore" and "Miracle" were both Reid/Babyface songs, the first a midtempo the latter a ballad about abortion, although the video didn't prove that!. It reached a 9th position on the charts. Narada Michael Walden's "I Belong To You" didn't make the pop charts in US and not the top 40 in Uk either. However, this midtempo is pretty good, although it lacks a good hook it's a catchy song nonethless. "Who Do You Love" co-written by Luther is perhaps the closest you get to uptempo-pop here. Sounds a lot like Janet Jackson again. ""We Didn't Know" written by Stevie Wonder and also a duet. Interesting song, but never released as single. "After We Make Love" is adult contemporary, and forgettable. Closer is called "I'm Knockin" and is a jazzy Hip Hopish typical early 90's song. But nothing special either.

Overall, This is a grower. Few songs are that well known, but the album is defenitely not worse then anything else in 1990 even if it's weaker then her first two album. Not so strange since they both were phenomenal!. However, this album got it's moments, it's not perfect but it's defenitely worth the price. But don't start here, start with here first two albums "Whitney Houston" and "Whitney". 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE LAST INTIMATE VOCLIST! .......2006-11-14

MOST REVIEWERS HAVE COMMENTED ON HER VOCAL RANGE AND SO ON, BUT THIS CD HAS A VERY INTIMATE FEEL ON SOME OF THE CUTS. SHE REACHED THE POINT WHERE MANY SINGERS COULDNT OR DIDNT KNOW HOW TO GET THERE. I WAS BORN IN THE MID 60'S AND I HAVE SEEN LEGENDS AND I HAVE HEARD SINGERS COME AND GO. BUT WHITNEY HAD A TALENT IN WHICH WHEN SHE SINGS IT SOUNDS AS IF SHE IS SINGING TO SOMEONE FROM HER HEART. MANY OF THE NEW SINGERS ARE MORE OR LESS PREFORMERS AND DONT HAVE THAT INTIMATE TOUCH. LOVER FOR LIFE,ALL THE MAN I NEED AND AFTER WE MAKE LOVE ARE TIMELESS, WHAT I MEAN BY TIMELESS IS WHEN YOU HEAR THEM TODAY THEY STILL HOLD A LOT GROUND AND DONT SOUND FADISH LIKE THIS NEW STUFF,THIS IS WHAT I CALL GOOD SOLID MUSIC.THESE SONGS MAKE PASSIONATE MEN WISH THEY COULD BE LOVED LIKE THIS,AND IF THEY ARE IT IS EVEN EASIER TO IDENTIFY TO.AS I WAS GOING THROUGH MY COLLECTION TODAY THIS IS WHAT I PLAYED AND IT SOUNDED AS GOOD AS IT DID SIXTEEN YEARS AGO,IN SOME REGUARDS EVEN BETTER BECAUSE OF THE EXPERIENCES IN RELATIONSHIPS THAT I HAVE HAD IN THOSE SIXTEEN YEARS. I LOVE GOOD MUSIC AND I HAVE REFUSED TO BUY MOST OF THIS NEW HIPHOP GARBGE OUT NOW. MAYBE ONE DAY THESE KIDS WILL LOOK BACK AND SAY" THAT IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE"

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Diva's Ear Candy!!!!!!.......2006-08-02

This cd presents a hot and smoldering young Whitney Houston! With an excellent production and song writers that include Stevie Wonder, Baby Face, and Luther Vandross, Whitney proved from an early age that she musically has what it takes. Her sense of rhythm and timing has always been brilliant!

The opening title cut is a earth-shattering rocker! Whitney wailing "My Name Is Not Susan" makes for a powerful vocal. "All The Man That I Need" is deeply passionate, all the while contrasting tenderness with strength. "I Belong To You" is the ultimate soul song! "Who Do You Love?" is an electric dance number. Music legend Stevie Wonder joins Whitney for a funky duet in "We Didn't Know". Whitney's very fine vocal in "After We Make Love" is gorgeous and incomparable. Don't miss Whitney hitting searing gospel notes in the uptempo finale "I'm Knockin".

Whitney Houston is one of the grandest divas around the world. Whitney's passion brings out the brilliance in her music. With prayers and good wishes, hopefully that passion will become her strength in her personal life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

5 out of 5 stars "Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30

This review is by Crosley.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

5 out of 5 stars A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Bernadette Peters has earned her distinction through hard work, sparkling talent, and a dizzying range of roles, yet one never feels she's "stretching out" beyond her abilities. This Grammy-nominated album from 1996 saw Peters strutting her tough kewpie-doll charm on everything from Elton John and Lyle Lovett, to (her favorite) Stephen Sondheim and Rodgers & Hammerstein. As a "pop" artist, Peters finds the soul of showmanship in even a wistful number like the Dylan song of the album title (a much less coy version than Maria Muldaur's with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band). For Bernadette Peters, personality is the liquor that drives an intoxicating performance. --Stephen M.H. Braitman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure Hot Love - anytime she wants!.......2005-05-17

By far the most entertaining album that Bernadette Peters has ever done.
Love in various guises.

The title track, "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" is so hot, you're going to blow your...um..top. This is the definitive version of this song, better than the Dylan original. or anyone elses.

I hadn't heard this album for years and it's much better than I remember.

Funny.

From the opening "I Feel like I'm Not out of Bed yet", "I Make him Feel Good" thru "Woman Be Wise" /(Don't advertise your Man) (By Sippie Wallace), "I'll be Your Baby Tonight" there is a lot of music for the Second Chakra here. Bluesy. Earthy.

But also Fourth chakra: "No One is Alone". "Running on Faith", "What's the use of Wondering" display her command of the show type tunes she is normally associated with.

Spectacular vocal range. Expressive. and the hot tuba solos are just the right touch.

What a Sweetie Pie! She can sure be my baby anytime she wants. Pure HOT Love.

2 out of 5 stars A great disappointment to me..........2002-01-11

I love Bernadette. I really do. But I hated this album. I cannot imagine what she was thinking. To me, the songs were bad choices for her, the arrangements were unpleasant, her voice was not at its best. I listened to it three times, and could not warm up to it, so I gave it away. I was so excited when I found it in our town's only music store, a place that offers few items which are not mass appeal productions. I have to say that it probably was the full-price purchase I regret most in the last five years.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-04-20

This is artistry at its best. Bernadette has entertained in as many venues as any artist, and is wildly successful at all of them!! This release shows off her versatility in a huge variety of musical styles. Memorable tracks are "Cupid", "No One Is Alone", "He's Got A Way" and "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight." In this release, Bernie is sultry, sweet, melancholy and flirtatious. 5 stars +++++++!

5 out of 5 stars Bernadette Draw Back Your Bow Lips.......2000-09-03

and let's her talent flow in this diverse collection of songs for the romantic at heart. This album covers a wide range of styles of the romance songs genre: the playful 50's-ish "You Make Me Feel Good"; the touching re-make of the Beatle's "(She's) He's Got A Way About (Her) Him"; the chilling lonliness of "Faithless Love" and the 'sinfully delicious' "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight"-this CD take's you on a journey to the center of your heart and back, and then some, as only Bernadette can.

5 out of 5 stars Bernadette once again takes my breath away........1999-06-15

If you are a Bernadette Peters fan, this cd is for you. Songs like RUNNING ON FAITH, NO ONE IS ALONE and, WOMAN BE WISE are breath taking! I think that this her best cd of all time. I would recomend this cd to anyone, fan or not.

With the seventh installment of Pavarotti & Friends: For Cambodia and Tibet, the beloved tenor assembles yet another all-star cast of musicians in hopes of helping the children of Cambodia and Tibet. The music of the pop stars--which ranges from the modern rock of the veteran Eurythmics to the dance-pop of Aqua--really steals the show here, with Pavarotti lending his impeccable vocal support. Tracy Chapman performs "Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet with Pavarotti, and Eurythmics team up with him on "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)." Of course, the tenor's fans will be begging to hear the opera great in his element, and it's no surprise that he shines on Bizet's "Agnus Dei," with international pop star Mónica Naranjo joining in; Eduardo Di Capua's "O Sole Mio," with Savage Garden; or even Luigi Denza's "Funiculi, Funicula," with Aqua and a children's chorus. As globetrotting benefit tributes go, this is a mixed bag, but there's probably something here for everyone. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent video...........2002-10-13

I am a fan of Savage Garden, The Eurythmics, and George Michael - all of them did a great job with and without Pavarotti....

And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs sung by a diverse group of artists.......2002-02-07

As always, Maestro Pavarotti's Modena concerts are highly entertaining and uplifting.
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.

It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.

If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.

5 out of 5 stars Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04

Bravo showed this concert on New Years 2002 and it blew my mind. It is certainly the best of the War Child concerts, which started in 1996 as Pavarotti's effort to help the children of war-torn countries.
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."

4 out of 5 stars Very diverse! Loved it!.......2000-12-18

I am a HUGE Savage Garden fan so that was the main reason to buy this album. And I have to say Darren's voice is AWESOME in "O Sole Mio", the first time I listened to it it made me cry. So I bought the cd. I was glad to see that there are very enjoyable songs in the album not only the SG tracks. I loved Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" performance, now I am a Tracy fan too. You'll enjoy the performances by Aqua, Enrique Iglesias and Eurhytmics and of course the queen Tracy Chapman " ("Telling Stories" is superb!). I even discovered some new artists I had never heard of and I liked them. You won't be disappointed by this album.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully enjoyable and diverse collection of music.......2000-11-05

This collection of music has given me great pleasure. Aqua's Around the World is a joy. Hearing the Eurythmics and Pavarotti perform together is fun and beautiful. I also especially liked Enrique Iglesias's Be with you. 20 tracks and 77 minutes of great music I will listen to again and again. And all for a good cause.

        4 out of 5 stars Smashing Album.......2005-11-11

Any album that gives us Jason Graae singing "Smashing, New York Times" is worth having.

3 out of 5 stars Great singers, not so great music.......2001-12-26

I love hearing songs from forgotten and lost musicals, and I enjoyed Unsung Musicals I, but I was disappointed with this one. "Lawyers" is easily the best song on the CD. Most of the other songs are ballads, and dull ones at that. (Admittedly, I am not a big ballad fan.) Looks like Bruce Kimmel's song selection process kind of flattened out here. Why, for example, did they choose a ballad from Foxy, when by all accounts the songs originally sung by Bert Lahr in that show were a lot of fun? On the other hand, the singers are very respectable and always worth listening to. Glory Crampton definitely needs more leading roles! My advice is to listen to the song snippets first, to determine if these songs are your thing.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-15

This is the second fine CD in the series of three. These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Lawyers" (from A Broadway Musical), "Everything in the World" (The Yearling), "Smashing New York Times" (also A Broadway Musical), "Run Cinderella" (Foxy), and "Phantom of the Opera" (title song from the Rupert Holmes show). There was a third CD in this series. If its not longer available, they should reissue it. Its on a par with the other two in the series.

        4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Musical Fans.......2000-03-25

The Unsung Musicals albums are a treasure for those who are "mega-fans" of musical theatre. All the songs share the tragic fate of being in a musical that just never made it on the Great White Way.

Some of the songs are somewhat cloying, such as "One Promise Come True." However, there are also some real gems, such as "Lawyers," which has some clever rhymes and a catchy tune. You also get the added bonus of hearing some great singers perform such as Sally Mayes, Rebecca Luker and Davis Gaines.

Overall, this recording is great for both its entertainment and its historical value.
