4 out of 5 stars An excellent album!.......2005-11-13

It's not every day three musicians with such talent as Tim Bogart, Carmine Appice, and Jeff Beck get together and make an album. Usually when musicians of this calabor get together egos and tempors get in the way of the music, thats way supergroups dont last. Appice is one of the worlds best drummers, Bogart is a great bass player, and Jeff Beck is well, Jeff Beck, the man plays guitar like... well I dont know what like but he is amazing! This album however is unlike anyother supergroup album in the history of music because this one is actually good and actually its better then good its excellent!

The album opens up with its best song, 'Black Cat Moan' which is a nice heavy bluesy rocker and features some amazing slide guitar by Beck. Next is the nice little ballad lady, and no not the horrible Styx song, this is much better! 'Oh To Love You' is another ballad with nice vocals from Bogart. Its almost like a Beegees song but with balls! 'Superstition' is a cover of the classic Stevie Wonder song, and I actually like it. I mean they could have done better but I think they did a fantastic job on it, though its clearly not better then the original its still nice and features some killer lead guitar by Beck. 'Sweet Sweet Surender' is another slower ballader type song, and its not one of my favorites though it does have some really beautiful lyrics. 'Why Should I Care' is a nice heavy rocker, and one of the better songs on the album, If the whole album was like this song I would have given it five stars thats for sure. Next is the rocker 'Lose My Self With You' which is probabley my favorite song on the album next to 'Black Cat Moan' because it is just such a killer song. Becks amazing wah-wah talents are showcased greatly on this song. 'Livin Alone' is a really cool song, I dont know how to describe it, its very 1970's and very cool, thats really all I can say because it must be heard to enjoy. The album comes to a close ever so perfectly with 'im So Proud' which is the best of the ballads on the album and is a nice easy way of ending the album on a soft and high note.

Beck, Bogert, and Appice is one of the best albums Jeff Beck ever made, and had there been fewer ballads and more rockers and bluesier songs this album would have been even better.

So even though I think the boys went a little over board with all the ballads I still think this is an essential album that all rock fans and musicians (especially guitarists), should own and add to their collections.

4 out of 5 stars quality,no frills rock 'n roll.......2005-11-02

If you are looking for epic, deep thought music--seek it elsewhere. This is a set of short, sharp, hard tunes
played by top notch musicians. One could argue that they
could have used a "real" lead singer instead of the quasi-
shreek that is put forth in this recording, but one could also
quite legitimately argue that is part of the charm of this effort.
In your home,in your car ,on the I-pod,turn this one up as loud as you can--and rock. Very good sounding disk--even without remastering which was not avail at the time this review was written.

3 out of 5 stars Some background on BB&A's "Superstition".......2005-10-21

Overall, I'd rate "BB&A" a good album and worth having. Other readers about my age may recall the following story of the band's recording of "Superstition." Jeff had just helped Stevie Wonder record "Talking Book" - preceeding by a few decades the pairing of Eddie Van Halen and Michael Jackson on "Thriller." To return the favor (or so the story goes), Stevie wrote "Superstition" for Jeff to release as the single from "BB&A." But before Jeff could release it as his single, Steve decided he'd release it as his own to help push "Talking Book," and we all know how huge a hit that was for Stevie. We can only listen to both versions and wonder what might have been ...

3 out of 5 stars Great Players, Lame Material.......2005-06-19

These guys are tight and play wonderfully. But most of the material just isn't great. Their cover of Supersition is wonderful, but the other songs are pretty so-so and sound like the kind of tunes other bands would have left off their CD's. The cover of I'm So Proud is just blah.

I would not start here if you are new to Jeff Beck. Read some of the Listmanias on Beck, as there are better discs to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Great boogie rock masterpiece from the early 70s.......2005-04-28

I was lucky enough to see BBA at my very first concert when I was really young. I've been a lifelong fan of all three of these guys ever since. I had just started playing bass, so to see Tim Bogert play a 15 minute unaccompanied distorted bass solo was pretty cool! Sure, the vocals aren't very good (Sorry Dave from Covington, I CAN sing a bit so I feel qualified to say that), and the songwriting is basic, but these are three amazing musicians just jamming away at boogie rock. The tracks "Lady", "Superstition", "Livin' Alone" and Curtis Mayfield's "I'm So Proud" are outstanding.

Check out West, Bruce & Laing, Restrictions by Cactus or Johnny Winter's Still Alive & Well if you like this stuff. There's also a BBA Live in Japan double album out there, but it's expensive.

This album is another great chapter in the ever changing musical career of Jeff Beck. Before this was the underrated R&B flavored Jeff Beck Group with Cozy Powell and Max Middleton. After this was the stellar Blow By Blow, when Jeff took off in a whole new direction.

3 out of 5 stars For Beck completists only.......2007-03-31

First off, I have been a Jeff Beck fan since the Yardbirds. I always was mystified as to why this album was only released in Japan. Now 30+ years after its release I understand why. It's not bad. Some of it is quite good. But it suffers from a lot of the '70's excesses that weren't that great back then (mandatory drum solos, audience call and response, etc.). Mostly, I expected much more flash from Beck and less Bogert and Appice. I still mostly love the studio album, but had bigger expectations for the live show having seen them do a monster version of "Morning Dew" on In Concert or some other '70's music show.

Bottom line: If you can somehow find a cheap copy it is no disgrace to your collection, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it at Japanese import prices.

5 out of 5 stars priceless.......2007-02-16

... and just as well, considering the price! You'll never get more sound out of 3 musicians but most of all you have Jeff Beck - thankfully playing blues and rock, at which he is unsurpassable.

5 out of 5 stars UH, like,HEAVY!-----DUDE!.......2006-08-19

Jeff got to play with his dream rythmn section, and got bored with them too. Get all the artifacts you can of this collaboration--cause,in ways only Jeff Beck fans seem to appreciate, there never was, and never will be, ANYTHING like it.

    Album Description

Killer Whales is the first commercial release by guitarist Jon Bare and his band, the Killer Whales. It was recorded virtually live in the studio, combining the raw experimental spirit of the 60's with a 90's state-of-the-art cutting edge. Killer Whales features the awesome bass playing of Tim Bogert (Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, Vanilla Fudge) and the impressive drumming of Chet McCracken (Doobie Brothers). This album captures all of the spontaneity and excitement of the power-trio's live performance. Jon Bare, one of the hottest new guitarists on the L.A. music scene, is the producer and central creative force behind the album.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smokin, Smokin, Smokin.......2004-05-26

You're probably familiar with Tim Bogert (Jeff Beck & Vanilla Fudge) and Chet McCracken (Doobie Brothers) but Jon Bare is the driving force behind this "Killer" CD. He's an excellent guitarist (on par with anyone you can think of) and the songwriting is terrific... We've all heard uninteresting songs written by great guitar players - but you won't find that on this CD. The songs showcase the virtuosity of each player without being indulgent. Besides Bare and Bogert, McCracken really impresses - you didn't hear a hint of this playing in his Doobie Brothers days. But don't take my word for it, listen to "Be Young," "I Got The Blues," and "Spacey" and you'll be blown away.

In 1973, rock and roll was beginning to reach a level of quality it had never reach before, and to this day has never reached again. A number of masterpieces were served up in this year, including an album that was a collaboration between ex-Yardbirds guitarst Jeff Beck, ex-Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert, and ex-Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice. Though the supergroup known as Beck Bogert Appice was short-lived, it was an excellent group. Repertoire. 2005.

This is a great album from the glory days of the early 1970s (and my youth!). There are some reviewers (writing about the domestic release) who have disparaged this release, complaining about the vocals, the sound, etc. I can only offer that THIS is the way heavy music sounded then, and pleasing or not to some modern ears, I feel it's a treasure. I recently purchased this remaster and it puts the domestic U.S. version to shame. I suggest spending the extra money for this release. It also has single versions of "Lady" and "I'm So Proud" and they are good, but not vital to your enjoyment. BUY IT NOW!!!

3 out of 5 stars Tim Bogart needed to keep his mouth shut!!!.......2005-01-18

Everyone plays great - Jeff is still my favorite guitar player,
but after you hear this once (I had the vinyl back in 74) that one listening will be enough. Just as you get into each song, besides the low grade vox by Bogart - you get his sophomoric and annoying high pitched yelps and screaming in the middle of Jeff's brillant solos. TB is a total buzz kill - as his carreer following this project shows (nada). Great bass player - but he needed to keep his mouth shut. Thinking of how even more impressive this configuration would have been with a real vocalist.

5 out of 5 stars Super Group ?.......2004-11-05

BBA Live is really for completists - much as I love this CD it's very expensive.

You can tell the audience isn't that into it, B hates B&A and just wants to be done (I love the "get your s**t together" from Jeff over the talkbox to either Tim or Carmine followed by Tim and Carmine singing it back at Jeff in harmony - just says something altho I'm not sure what), but in some of the solos when the audience has finally gotten into it the sheer brilliance of the 3 players is amazing.

I swear Tim Bogart plays better lead bass on some of these songs then Jeff Beck plays guitar, and on some of them you can sorta hear Beck scrambling to keep up - it's a really amazing thing. And Carmine is just incredible, holding the bottom all by himself AND playing as much a lead role as the other two. As power trios go, these guys aren't much short of Cream, if at all.

It's an incredible display of musicality, marred by the singing (sorry Tim) and the tiredness/unhappiness of the band.

Ah well - just think if we had a recording from the BEGINNING of the tour! :)

3 out of 5 stars BBA is the Low Point of Beck's Career.......2004-08-12

I've had this for years and didn't pay anywhere near this price.
Considering Beck has played some of the most incredible guitar in the history of rock, his playing here sounds uninspired. Carmine Appice's vocals are nothing short of annoying. Take this money and buy as much of Beck's catalog, including his Yardbirds work, as possible. This one is for completists and collectors.

5 out of 5 stars worth every cent.......2004-07-25

If you love heavy bluesy extended jamming this is a treat...these guys pushed each other to their collective limits live. This cd at full blast will make your neighbors move. precious rock and roll noise that never sounded better

      5 out of 5 stars Pristine quality. . . . . Pristine show. ..........2004-05-18

I was a little cautious because of the price, but after receiving it & listening I'm EXTREMELY happy ! The quality of the sound(most japanese live performances )& the quality of the performance are outstanding! Don't hesitate, well worth every penny.
