John Barleycorn

Traffic's third studio album is also its third best, ranking below the band's superb second record (1968's Traffic) and its psychedelic debut (1968's Mr. Fantasy). The depth of those albums came from having two superior songwriters, Steve Winwood and Dave Mason; by John Barleycorn, Winwood was leading a trio that included Chris Wood on horns and Jim Capaldi on drums. Winwood now supplied guitar as well as keyboards, and songs like "Glad" and "Freedom Rider" reflected the trio's fondness for instrumental jams. But the 1970 album is remembered most for the title tune, a traditional folk tune blessed with one of the finest vocals of Winwood's long career. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars There Were Three Men Came Out of The West.......2007-06-17

This is Traffic's third album, but Dave Mason has left to pursue a solo career, and it is mainly Steve Winwood, with help from Capaldi on drums, and Chris Wood on Sax, Flute, and Organ. A core trio, and in the studio they create a full sound, with just these three key players. It embraces a variety of styles, even for this eclectic group, ranging from the old English folk ballad, "John Barleycorn," to the jazzy R&B of "Glad."

"There were three men came out of the West,
Their fortunes for to try,
And these three men made a solemn vow:
John Barleycorn must die."

There are many versions of this folk ballad, some going back as far as 1465, and collected by Cecil Sharp from 1900 to 1910. There are between 100 and 140 versions, and in the one used by Traffic & Co., in spite of the solemn efforts of the three men to triumph over John Barleycorn, or distilled liquor, this was the outcome:

"And little Sir John and the nut-brown bowl,
And he's brandy in the glass;
And little Sir John and the nut-brown bowl,
Proved the strongest man at last."

Steve Winwood plays guitar on this, and Chris Wood plays flute. There are two vocalists, and I am guessing that it is Capaldi and Winwood. Not much percussion, and hard to sing when you're playing flute. There is a tambourine. Winwood seems to be deeply into this music, and the treatment sounds both ancient and modern.

"Glad" is an instrumental, and there is an extended jam, mostly piano and keyboards. Great drums, and a fat sax riff that is easy to play, but it sounds so cool, and ends on a very cool sounding trill. This is a great instrumental track, and the rest of the record veers between these two extremes. I really like this Traffic album for "Glad" and "John Barleycorn" but the rest ain't bad, either. Since those are my favorite Traffic songs, this is my favorite Traffic album.

"The huntsman, he can't hunt the fox,
Nor so loudly to blow his horn,
And the tinker he can't mend kettle nor pot,
Without a little Barleycorn."

5 out of 5 stars A True Five Star.......2007-04-16

I was there when my older sisters listened to the vinyl version of Barleycorn on the turntable, back when the LP was only recently released. Even with the scratches and pops, the unique jazzy progressive flow of the music was immaculate. Needless to say, the re-mastering of what is already a true master may be redundant or gratuitious, but go ahead--make my day...stretch the limits of the human capacity to experience bliss. The other Amazon reviewers of this legendary work of art do not lie, are not using hyperbole, and do not exaggerate the point...this one goes to eleven...er, six...er, whatever.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest albums of all time.......2007-03-04

"John Barleycorn" has in common with much of the Beatles' work that -- even if you've listened to it a thousand times -- when you come back it sounds as fresh and new as the very first listening.

The entire album is great--and covers an amazing amount of "musical territory." It would be on my short list of nominees for "greatest album of all time."

Let me also add that I was fortunate enough to see the briefly-reunited Traffic at Columbia, MD's Merriweather Post Pavilion (the year may have been 1994), not too long after the release of their much-underrated "Far From Home" - a fine album in its own right. It was a concert for the ages. Among his many other talents, Winwood is a superb guitarist.

5 out of 5 stars incredible, indelible, inventive.......2007-02-16

this is one of my favorite rock and roll (plus jazz and folk influenced) albums of all time.
it gets my vote as Traffic's best, but that's a tough call, for sure. what an amazing mix of
songs, styles, influences in a unique blend of music. never get tired of hearing the story
of poor John Barleycorn!

5 out of 5 stars Great '60's Rock.......2007-01-11

Classic, creative rock by true stars of 1960's progressive music. Excellent blend of rock, folk, ballads, and a hint of improvisation. Some of Steve Winwood's best.

5 out of 5 stars One of Traffic / Steve Winwood's Greatest Albums.......2005-07-07

`John Barleycorn Must Die' may be Traffic's most mature album. It is certainly my favorite among all albums they released up to that point. And, most material after `John Barleycorn...' were live concert albums and reworking of older material.

Five of the six tracks on this album were written by Steve Winwood or by the collaboration of Winwood and drummer Jim Capaldi. The title track, `John Barleycorn' is a traditional English folksong which the group performs as well or better than all the folk specialists in the house such as Renbourn / Jansch's Pentangle and Steeleye Span.

This album also gives one of the strongest evidences of Traffic's role in creating a fusion between Rock and Jazz. The first track, `Glad' is a strongly Jazz influenced instrumental which is very easy to listen to, but possibly not that exciting.

The second track, `Freedom Rider' has a great sax performance by Chris Wood which, to my very inexperienced ear sounds like it comes from the 1930s, if only for its strong resemblance to the theme to the Hercule Poirot episodes from the same period. After this riff of nostalgia, the sax takes off to more modern climes.

Aside from the traditional title piece, I really don't get much from the songs' lyrics. Winwood is not the great lyricist. You don't get the simplicity of Lennon and McCartney or the stentorian tones of Keith Reid from Procol Harum of the same period.

What you do get is superior instrumental work hung on simple songs with interesting but uninspiring themes.

What is really important is that after the 35 years since I bought this album on LP, I still listen to it on a regular basis in rotation with all my other 1960s favorites.

5 out of 5 stars High Quality.......2002-10-05

I could have sworn that I submitted a review on this classic. Nonetheless here it goes again. Probably Traffic's best recording and one to take with you on a desert island if you have only room for 20 discs. Side 1 featuring Glad, Freedom Rider, and Empty Pages is almost a perfect side 1. Heck Glad just may be my favorite instrumental of all time. Love the drums on Empty Pages. What a spunky syncopated beat.

Side 2 is no slouch either with the awesome title track and two more good tunes. In general, the interplay between the organ, flute, and saxaphone is great throughout. The rhythms are captivating and Stevie Windwood vocals are very good. A keeper on all accounts.

5 out of 5 stars A Lost Classic.......2002-07-24

Traffic had one of the most original (and interesting) sounds in British rock, and not only because of their eclectic musical influences, which embraced psychedelia, folk, jazz, soul, R&B, and even classical. Their unique sound was also the result of their unusual instrumentation. While the group went through a number of personnel changes, its constant core members were Steve Winwood (vocals, keyboards, guitars), Chris Wood (sax, flute, and organ), and Jim Capaldi (drums & percussion). With no regular bass player, Winwood often filled in with the bass pedals on his organ. And, while there is no lack of guitars on most Traffic recordings, the guitar is not emphasized or particularly important to the group's sound. Dave Mason came and went in their early years and, on other recordings, Steve Winwood would switch to guitar, with Chris Wood taking over organ duties. In short, Traffic was anything but your typical guitar-bass-drums rock outfit. And, with "white Ray Charles" prodigy Winwood at the helm, and with their willingness to experiment with virtually any sound or musical style, they cut some of the most distinctive and important records in British rock.

"John Barleycorn Must Die" is the only recording by just the Traffic "core" trio, and it is also one of their strongest. With Dave Mason only a memory, and the Blind Faith experiment with Eric Clapton over, Steve Winwood returned to the studio to record his first solo album, originally titled "Mad Shadows." Needing a little musical support, he soon enlisted Capaldi and Wood, and Traffic was reborn with "John Barleycorn." However, the radio-friendly 3-minute song structures were abandoned, as Winwood & Co. stretched out into extended jazz-rock compositions. The instrumental "Glad," in particular, with Winwood's unforgetable piano riff and Wood's fat sax, may be the finest jazz-rock composition ever put to vinyl. In addition, early Traffic's folk-rock was updated by reaching back to medieval England for the title track. With limited, but extremely talented and complementary, personnel, "John Barleycorn" is probably Traffic's most cohesive and focused artistic statement.

To summarize: buy this record!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Traffic.......2000-06-25

Back in the day, the Brothers dogged me out for raving about Traffic. That stopped when they gave a listen.

There was no one else who did such a good job of the blend their strong guitar work with piano and horns (I guess now they call it fusion). "Glad" remains an exquisite piece of work, and hits right on the spot for the smooth jazz sound many others still strive for.

Of course, they did not stray too far from their beginnings, with the tragic, magic "Empty Pages". The piano interlude there has some of the best tickling of the ivories one would ever want to hear. It had been twenty five years since I heard this. This CD brings back a truckload of memories.

5 out of 5 stars Traffic's Best.......2000-04-07

John Barleycorn Must Die is Traffic's Best Album. There is no highlight of the album. The whole album blends together as one 35 minute song. It is an incredible album that everyone should own.

5 out of 5 stars Some good bonus material; some bad.......2005-12-20

There have been a number of different versions of this CD. There is a US, remastered version that does not have the live bonus track (but keeps the bad bonus studio tracks). It is less than half the price of this "Import" CD.

There are five bonus tracks on this album. The studio tracks I Just Want You To Know and Sitting Here, Thinking Of My Love are pretty bad. They are nothing like Traffic has done. They sound like they were meant to be AM radio hits. What's worse, is that I Just Want You To Know is stuck right in the middle of the original material. It really upsets the flow of the original album.

The three live bonus tracks are an introduction to the band, a 7 minute Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring and a 12 minute Glad, with following Freedom Ride hacked off. As the liner notes explain, Traffic was due to release a live album, but that was scrapped. The group was Winwood, Capaldi and Wood with Rich Grech.

I really like the two live tracks. I like the version of Glad better than the one on On The Road. The sound quality is a little off (like there is some wow and flutter to the tape), but I think it gives the music a unique, eerie feel to it. It really sets the type of atmosphere that you get at a great concert where the music takes you somewhere else.

The original album is one of Traffic's best. It has different sound than the earlier Traffic albums. It really makes good use of Winwood's soulful voice. Later Traffic albums would be brighter and more rock oriented.

This was originally going to be a Winwood solo album and it sounds like it in parts. With Winwood overdubbing most of the instruments, the album has a unique sound to it. It certainly does not sound like a typical rock album.

Note that both Capaldi and Wood have died.

    5 out of 5 stars A Traffic Classic.......2001-03-03

This album is one of the greatest of several fine efforts from one of the most unique, talented and often overlooked bands of the late 60's/70's. The jazz and folk influence that had always been hinted at in Traffic's earlier work become more apparent on "John Barleycorn" and the albums which followed it. Standout tracks are "Glad," a jazz-rock instrumental with a terrific piano riff, "Freedom Rider" which continues in the same jam/fusion vein and the infectious, breezy groove of "Empty Pages". The title track, with Chris Wood's gently haunting flute and Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi's lovely harmonies is the most beautiful rendition of this folk song you will ever hear. Every cut on the original album is good, this is probably Traffic's most instantly enjoyable release (besides their self-titled 1968 album, another classic) - I would recommend it if you're just getting familiar with the band. Steve Winwood's vocals, of course, are fabulous. This album also proves what a great musician the late Chris Wood was, featuring some great electric sax and his spine-tingling flute soloing. The remastered version contains a number of bonus tracks. "I Just Want You To Know," (a fairly pointless reprise of "Empty Pages") and a ballad, "Sittin Here..." both sound like demo songs and probably are, as such they don't hold up as well as the other album cuts. The live tracks tacked on at the end include some mostly incoherent mumbling, doors slamming and other backstage ambience, followed by "Who Knows.." which doesn't quite have the spunk of the studio version, but it's nice to hear another version of such a great Traffic song. Lastly there is a pretty trippy extended version of "Glad," which immediately segues into the opening chords of "Freedom Rider" and then we are rudely cut off and the CD ends! Kinda spoils the experience, considering there's still plently of space left on the CD for a few more live tracks. The CD booklet contains a not-particularly informative capsule history of Traffic. By far the best thing about the remastered CD (besides the sound quality) are the wonderful pictures of the band.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A GREAT TRAFFIC JAM!!.......2001-02-03

Man, was this a departure for Traffic from their previous albums. When I first picked up this album and saw Dave Mason wasn't on it, I was disappointed. Afterall, Mason was the guitar player for the band, and he wrote half their music. I really liked that folk pop sound on their previous self-titled album. And I felt Mason was the one primarily responsible for that sound. But it was obvious Winwood didn't want to go that way, and he and Mason had a fallen out. So that takes us to this album. This was orignally supposed to be a solo album for Winwood. But at the last minute he decided to bring on his old bandmates Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood, minus Mason. From the moment I first put the needle to the vinyl, and GLAD came on, well I was hooked big time. This was different than anything I had ever heard before. A band without a true guitar player who could jam and improvise like a jazz band, but still maintain a rock sound. What a way to start the 70's. Glad still remains one of the best instrumental songs I've heard. But the extended jams don't stop there. FREEDOM RIDER comes next with some fantastic creative sax and flute playing by Chris Wood. And then EMPTY PAGES with the most memorable elecric piano solo by Winwood that I've ever heard. Side 2 of the original vinyl did feature guitar. But it was Winwood handling the duties this time. This album was clearly a Winwood vehicle. He also produced most of this album. But he did bring in Guy Stevens, who was one of the best rock producers ever, to produce on STRANGER TO HIMSELF, and EVERY MOTHER'S SON, which has some George Harrison sounding guitar playing along with an extended organ and piano solo going on at the same time. Definitly the Guy Stevens touch, and a good way to close the album. A lot of people don't consider this their best album. But of all the Traffic albums I have, and I've got about all of em, I seem to reach for this one the most.

5 out of 5 stars Traffic Hits Their Stride.......2001-01-25

It's all a matter of taste- I'm not particularly fond of Traffic's first two albums- actually there was a third called Last Exit which was excellent and it was the beginning of the really classic jazzy Traffic sound which could not be attained until Dave Mason left- if you like Dave Mason try Live at the Canteen, it's a wonderful reunion with Dave and the whole band. Anyway, they really hit their stride on this album, it's great folky, jazzy rock. Winwood is as great on guitar as on keyboards. The next album, Low Spark is probably their best (in my opinion) and then they slowly went downhill. If you like this album Blind Faith should also be your cup o'tea.

      Album Description

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.

        Buy this CD.

If you have scrolled this far down the page, you are obviously interested enough to be serious about this genre. I therefore say - you MUST buy this CD. The "Briggs Fair" alone is worth the price, I'd pay half as much again for their recording of the Turtle Dove.

Such a beautiful clear tenor voice, perfect tuning, not too fruity, not too dry. Add to this truly glorious phrasing and overall shape, and the unteachable sense of the shape of the music, and you have an almost impossibly good combination.

The first time you hear this disc you will fall in love with it. You will have to buy it, if it's not yours already. Don't waste time. Addict your friends. Get it NOW!
