Amazon.com essential recording
They'd soon crash, and hard, thanks to their own excesses. But Rocks captures Aerosmith at a crazily driven peak of creativity; anyone who heard it and continued to dismiss them as mere Stones clones was just being willful. This is blues rock cranked up to '70s stadium level, the sound of the Trans Am, or maybe the Porsches several of these guys (surprisingly) remember driving. The psychic battering they would succumb to on the next year's Draw the Line is foreshadowed in Joe Perry's "Combination," but he and Steven Tyler also celebrate the rock-star mythos on "Lick and a Promise." The party-fueled tension, the tension-fueled party. --Rickey Wright --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

It's the rare greatest-hits album that takes on a life of its own. Generally, best-of collections are superceded by updated retrospectives. Hot Rocks is one of the rare exceptions to the rule. Originally released in 1972, it instantly became the Stones intro of choice, elbowing aside Big Hits, High Tide and Green Grass and Through the Past Darkly. Why? It happened to hit the racks when Mick and company were at their creative peak. The 21 tracks found here represent seven years of dizzying growth. From "Time is on My Side" through "Satisfaction" and "Let's Spend the Night Together," on to Sticky Fingers's "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses," Hot Rocks never lets up. The likes of Sucking in the '70s and Jump Back come and go, but this Stones overview will not be moved. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars HOT ROCKS 1964-1971 IS THE BEGINNING'S AND MAKING'S OF A ROCK N' ROLL PHENOMENAL LEGACY........2007-06-24

I will be writing a review on the legendary greatest hits compilation 2-CD set entitled "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" by the second all-time greatest band in Rock n' Roll history that has also been called THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD. I give you England's second most favorite sons, the reigning and defending World Champions of Rock n' Roll, T-H-E R-O-L-L-I-N-G S-T-O-N-E-S! "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" was originally released in 1972 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the London / ABKCO Records label which is the Decca Record Company Ltd. Looking through the history of this compilation album, there were three different releases of this album on CD. This legendary compilation album would see its first release on a 2-CD set in 1985 on the ABKCO / London Records label which is the registered trademark of Decca Record Company Ltd. The 1985 release did one of the very first Analogue to Digital mastering ever by Mobile Fidelity Sound and is manufactured by PolyGram in Hanover, West Germany. The 1985 release is one of the most sought after collectibles around if you can find it. This compilation album would be re-released in 1986 on the ABKCO Records label noting that the recording's were Digitally remastered from original master recordings. Which now brings me to the new and most recent 2002 re-release also on the ABKCO Records label. The new 2002 re-release contains the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) Remastered encoding process which is to supposedly capture every detail and nuance of the original master tapes. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

PLEASE NOTE: There has been a concern that I found extremely important to stress to all of you. It has been brought to my attention by some of my friends as well as some of my fellow readers and reviewers that the 2002 release is really not recorded in the DSD remastered encoding process. After doing my own research and conducting my own personal study, I find this fact to be true. I purchased two different "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" on a 2-CD set bearing and stating the DSD Remastered logo and packaged in a Digipak while the other is packaged in a jewel case. Looking at the discs itself, the two discs packed in the jewel case are not on gold discs while the two discs that are packaged in the Digipak are gold discs. Listening to both sets, there was a difference and improvement in the sound quality of the DSD Remastered on the two gold discs packaged in the Digipak. There was no improvement on the other two discs. Personally, in my opinion, the very first 1985 CD release sounds better than the other two CD re-releases ever did. I just thought that I would clear this up and help in making you the consumers more aware of what you are purchasing.

What can I possibly say about THE ROLLING STONES that hasn't already been said? THE ROLLING STONES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording Rock's second all-time greatest anthems ever. THE STONES would also be known the world over for inventing the Rock n' Roll lifestyle thus labeling them "the bad boys of Rock." When ROLLING STONES legendary frontman and Rock God Mick Jagger met up with his old childhood chum, guitarist Keith Richards, their true friendship and bond would be special which would last up to this very day. However, when Jagger and Richards met up and joined forces with the original and genuine prince of darkness himself, the late great ROLLING STONES founder, leader and guitarist Brian Jones, Brian Jones' replacement, guitarist Mick Taylor, bassist Bill Wyman, drummer Charlie Watts and the late quitely known pianist, Ian "Stu" Stewart, THE ROLLING STONES would be born resulting in modifying the mixture of Blues, Jazz and Rock n' Roll together thus giving their sound a new rich and pure quality that the British could truly call their own. THE STONES have contributed and accomplished so much in Rock n' Roll that they don't have anything left to prove.

THE STONES legendary Rock anthems speak for themselves. With the exception of ELVIS and THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES have so many great songs put together in many greatest hits compilations, that many music lovers would feel and think that it is truly unfair that no other band around in this world could stand up to them or match them. When it comes to THE STONES' true Rockers in this compilation album, you have great anthems defining the band's persona beginning on DISC ONE such as the greatest riff in Rock n' Roll history, the blistering "Satisfaction," the mild and soothing song which unfolds into a Rocker grabber, "Under My Thumb," the merciless Rocker "Get Off Of My Cloud," the incredible sounding Rocker "19th Nervous Breakdown," the breakthrough Rocker "Paint It Black" and the explosive Rocker with a message, "Lets Spend The Night Together.

DISC TWO takes right where DISC ONE left off and begins with the forever ROLLING STONES legendary trademark Rock anthem, "Jumpin' Jack Flash," the electrifying Rocker "Street Fighting Man," the daring and tempting Rocker of all Rockers, "Sympathy For The Devil," the Rock n' Roll anthem that would have honky tonk bars screaming and craving for more, "Honky Tonk Women," the groundbreaking Rocker "Gimme Shelter," the kick a*s hard Rocker performed live, "Midnight Rambler" and THE STONES' rewarding experience's with black women, "Brown Sugar."

THE STONES also showed a more mellower and romantic side of the band thus exposing a sensitive persona. DISC ONE would deliver legendary songs such as THE STONES trademark Rock anthem "Time Is On My Side," the beautifully slow and romantic "As Tears Go By" and the beautifully slow and wonderfully atmospheric sounding "Ruby Tuesday."

DISC TWO would take right where DISC ONE left off and deliver two more great slow Rock anthems such as the legendary gospel according to THE ROLLING STONES preached THE STONES' way, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and the beautifully slow and smooth acoustic anthem "Wild Horses."

Listening to the "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" compilation album, this collection is by far, one of the Top 5 greatest collections ever assembled by anybody. This is a great album for everybody of all ages to enjoy. This treasure gem is priceless and will live on forever for as long as music still exists. You can do all of your album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local orders Books and Music store.

In closing, THE ROLLING STONES have been on Rock's ultimate pedestal on and off for many years now taking where THE BEATLES left off. However, THE STONES have also had their fair share of tragedies and tribulations to contend with such as the untimely deaths of both Brian Jones in 1969 and Ian "Stu" Stewart in 1985. Despite THE STONES fatalities, THE ROLLING STONES have persevered and continue to move forward in representing Rock n' Roll as being its only premiere act thus resulting in delivering the highest grossing tours of all time up to this very day. THE STONES have already received the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. THE ROLLING STONES have forever left more than their fair shares of their many mark's and place's in Rock n Roll history. And because of that my fellow Rock n' Rollers, THE ROLLING STONES will NEVER be forgotten or denied even if they tried. I, for one, have seen every single STONES tour since 1981 and will continue to see every tour till THE STONES are no more. So here's to you Mick, Keith, the late great Brian, Mick T., Bill, Charlie and the late great Stu. Thanks for the great memories and moments with many more still to come. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say mnore? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES! R.I.P. Lewis Brian Hopkin-Jones A.K.A. Brian Jones, Born 28 February 1942, Died officially on 3 July 1969 at age 27. Also R.I.P. Ian "Stu" Stewart, Born 18 July 1938, Died 12 December 1985 at age 47. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars Rolling Stones Hot Rocks SACD.......2007-06-13

For any Stones fan, I think this was the culmination or consensus of the greatest hits album for any band. I have owned this title on vinyl, cd and now SACD. First of all, any compilation album is subject to the producer's vision, and I understand that. That is each song may have been produced differently.
On the first disc, it is obvious that the early days of stereo engineering meant separating everything into left and right, but the clarity of SACD really shines through.***Note** Just because it's SACD doesn't mean it's 5.1 surround. I was especially impressed with Ruby Tuesday. I finally can hear that the distortion in the left speaker is actually an over-mike'd cello and not (as I thought for years) some funky bass line.
The second CD really stood out with some great tunes, especially Honky Tonk Women and Midnight Rambler. I tend to prefer when songs are mixed as if I where listening to the band live. That is, I like the lead singer in the middle and drums behind the lead singer. Guitars, bass and backing vocals should be on either side. I was really disappointed with Gimme Shelter because this mix seemed to cram everything towards the center. I don't know if this was the original production or just this cd. The rest of the cd is great. Now if they can just re-engineer the Who's Who's Better, Who's Best on SACD, I'll be in Heaven. ***Another note*** This review may be nullified by the fact that, as my children have pointed out, I'm old, and as such, I can afford a lot better speakers than I could when I was young.

5 out of 5 stars DSD Revives The Classics!.......2007-05-03

There's not much to add about the immense quality of the basic stereo versions of these songs. They are all immortal. However, this DSD (similar to SACD) brings out the subtle (and not so subtle) highs and lows of all tracks by accenting their high quality. Be aware that this is DSD and NOT SACD. It has to have the SACD logo to be SACD. That being said, you've never heard so clear a version of, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" or "Wild Horses". The most fantastic version is of, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" which not only sounds like the first time you heard it - it sounds like they are in your living room! I jest not!

5 out of 5 stars An Early And GREATEST Stage Of A Continuing Phenomenon.......2007-04-02

As a child of the 1960's (born in 1946), The Rolling Stones have made music that I have listened to at each stage of my adolescent and presumably post-adolescent life. At each juncture, their music has been through changes as has one or two of the band members, as have I! Asked when he planned to retire some years ago, Mick Jagger - in classic Mick Jagger style - responded something like, "... no one asks Muddy Waters or John Lee Hooker that question. Why are you asking me? I sing my version of the blues and plan to do so until I can't. That might include being wheeled out on stage in a wheelchair some years from now, still doing what I do as best as I can." That is not intended to be a direct quote, but is rather the way I recall hearing the story told and retold over the years. I recall it this way because it makes sense to me ... a LOT of sense. Often characterized as the quintessenal rock and toll band, The Rolling Stones were, are and I expect will continue to be and become a continuing phenomenon of musical expression. That being said, even bands that seem to go on forever have their stronger and weaker periods; their peaks of high creativity and valleys of times when they simply have to fulfill a contractual obligation by releasing an album and/or touring.

For most Stones fans, the period the collection at hand provides an unarguably thrilling sampling of is that in the years from 1964 to 1971 during which the Stones wrote, performed and recorded some of the greatest music in the continually developing story of the genre we call Rock and Roll.

This is a two CD set is produced on two layers. One is a `normal' CD, the second is a Super Audio CD (SACD). Both layers have been produced from the original takes using DSD (Direct Stream Digital) encoding which does a simply tremendous job of capturing each and every subtle moment, tone and innuendo on each track - be it from voice or instrument. It actually sounds a lot better than the original recordings and is far superior to standard `remasterings' of older studio and/or live recordings. So, even though there are no real surprises on these CDs, there is much delight to be had by the Stones audiophile in hearing just how good they really sound(ed) during this period.

The specific tracks are all known, verbatim, to many of my generation and include, on the first CD:
1. Time Is On My Side
2. Heart Of Stone
3. Play With Fire
4. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
5. As Tears Go By
6. Get Off Of My Cloud
7. Mother's Little Helper
8. 19th Nervous Breakdown
9. Paint It, Black
10. Under My Thumb
11. Ruby Tuesday, and
12. Let's Spend The Night Together

The second CD picks up where the first one leaves off with:
1. Jumpin' Jack Flash
2. Street Fighting Man
3. Sympathy For The Devil
4. Honky Tonk Women
5. Gimme Shelter
6. Midnight Rambler (Live)
7. You Can't Always Get What You Want
8. Brown Sugar, and
9. Wild Horses

Clearly, the Rolling Stones have produced dozens of albums and hundreds upon hundreds of songs: most are at least better than average and many (some would argue, most) are far superior to most of everything else that has ever (or may ever be) written for, performed or recorded in this particular musical genre.

Whether you believe that the Stones are simply one of the greatest Rock and Roll bands to ever perform or that they are THE greatest, you will have no regrets about investing in this remarkably hypnotic, engaging and enthusiastic pair of CDs. La crème de la crème. The best of the best. Vocally, musically, ensemble-wide: in all measurable respects. Close your eyes and sing along - with your voice or in your mind. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Rolling Stones are awful...dont buy this!!.......2006-12-25

What a disaster!!! How could anyone like this lousy rock band? They have sold more than 20 lame albums and they most surely could not make good music at all. Mick Thornten, the lead singer just screams, can't sing, sounds more like baby just like Robert Plant. Keith Richmond is what I call the worst guitar player in the world, never took lessons, always out of tune, and only two string power chords. Willie Whatts is the worst drummer ever, he never could drum as good as Lars Ulrich(Metallica drummer). They even have put up some of the even more lousiest and worst songs ever made like Brown Sugar, Satisfaction, Get Off My Cloud, and Sympathy For The Devil. Even a Green Day CD has better music than this!
Ignore the previous 5 star reviewers below and avoid this lousy compilation. Get SULTANS OF SWING:THE VERY BEST OF DIRE STRAITS insted.

The beauty of Schoolhouse Rock in its original Saturday morning run (1973-85) was that kids watching couldn't tell whether the catchy three-minute cartoon jingles were meant to be commercials, shows, or something else entirely. That enabled overexposed TV youth to learn without realizing it between episodes of Scooby Doo and Fat Albert. Then the Brady Bunch generation became the alternative nation, and the innocence with which they took in these grammar, history, and math lessons was lost. Now comes the obligatory tribute album, Schoolhouse Rock Rocks--pleasant enough, but full of postmodern yuks and missed-the-point nostalgia that aim to celebrate but instead drain the joy from childhood memories.

Though it's somewhat interesting to hear Pavement turn "Mo More Kings" into lo-fi krautrock or Moby make "Verb: That's What's Happening" into industrial techno-pop, the performers who most successfully preserve Schoolhouse Rock's edutainment viability are those who are most cartoonish to begin with: Ween ("The Shot Heard 'round the World"), Biz Markie ("The Energy Blues"), and Daniel Johnston ("Unpack Your Adjectives"). The problem remains, nonetheless: Any revamping of these songs implies Schoolhouse Rock somehow needed to be made hipper. That none of these songs is better than its original proves how very unhip '70s kids have grown up to be. --Roni Sarig

4 out of 5 stars Your Mind Grows Flowered.......2007-05-25

This is a very nifty CD that puts a more modern-day twist on the old "Schoolhouse Rock" songs that we all know and love. I bought this "on spec" with the idea that it was quirky and different enough to possibly have some gems - and indeed it does.

I'm not much of a hip-hop fan, but the real standout was "The Tale Of Mr. Morton" by Skee-Lo - worth the price alone.

3 out of 5 stars Gen X reminiscence [3.5 stars].......2007-03-30

Us 30-somethings grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons on ABC. In the late 70's and early 80's, in between feature cartoons and commercials, ABC ran the "School House Rock" animated shorts, videos really. They were educational, catchy and fun. Those songs are part of the quilt that is the pop culture of us Gen X'ers.

In the waning days of the "grunge" and (so-called) "alternative" music movements, some of the notable artists in those styles assembled to pay tribute to School House Rocks. The result was this CD, featuring Moby, Ween, Pavement, Blind Melon, the Lemonheads, Man or Astro-Man, Biz Markie and others, covering songs like "Three is the Magic Number," "No More Kings," "I'm Just a Bill," "Inter-Planet Janet" and about a dozen others. Some covers are truer to the originals than others. Most are at least interesting. A few are disappointing. But all of them bring back nice childhood memories (if you're the sentimental sort.)

Though the songs look back to the 70's and 80's, the covers are bathed in the 90's. The sound on this album says more about the time it was recorded than when the songs were written. Had this album been made 2 or 3 years later than it was, it would have had a decidedly bland pop/hip-hop sound and probably would've featured Britney, Backstreet Boys, N' Sync, 98 Degrees, et al. Instead, it has a bit of an edge, a little bite to it.

School House Rock Rocks! is not unlike Saturday Morning, the 1995 album of covers of TV cartoon theme songs (like Matthew Sweet doing "Scooby-Do Where Are You?" and Ramones on "Spider-Man".) In fact, Saturday Morning preceded this collection. Both are very similar in that they cover TV tunes from the 70's (and a few from the 60's.) If you like School House Rock Rocks, check out Saturday Morning, too.

3 out of 5 stars Don't mess with an original.......2006-12-31

I also thought this would be remakes of the originals but instead it's "rocked" up versions of the originals which I think lack the simplicity and snappiness that made them memorable to me as a child. It's better than nothing, but not by much.

1 out of 5 stars A "Not Necessary" remake - the Originals are better.......2006-11-11

Sorry, I thought this would be a great updated version of the classic SHR music - and I was really disappointed. I don't really understand the point of this album - why "remake" music that was timeless and pretty much perfect in the first place?
I can't imagine my own kids actually learning anything from these remakes (and bottom line, wasn't that the point?)... and listening to "No More Kings" was downright depressing - when SHR has always had the exact-opposite effect!

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for Gen Xers.......2006-07-28

Sometimes, covers of old songs and attempts to modernize old childhood favorites just fall flat. This isn't one of those times.

From the rocking rendition of "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here" by Buffalo Tom to the R&B Soul crooning of "The Tale of Mr. Morton" by Skee-lo, this album will have you singing along and recalling those simpler days of catching Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday Mornings.

A wonderful effort by all involved and a must-have for children of the 70's and 80's.

There are only a handful of CDs that come out that rocks from start to finish. This is one of those. AC/DC (Highway To Hell/Back In Black), Led Zeppelin (Zoso, Led I, Led II), and Fastway (Fastway) are others but there are not many. Buy this and you won't regret it. (Unless you don't really Rock)

The production was the best up to that point, with layers of guitars making for a dense and foreboding sound (Noboby's Fault, Rats in the Cellar, Combination, Back in the Saddle) and a cd that provides aural orgasms when listened to with headphones. The lyrics are clever, raunchy, autobiographical, and at times poignant without the excesses that dogged Tyler in years to come. Everyone gets their hand in as well, with Hamilton's superb Sick As A Dog and Whitford's funky Last Child complimenting the Tyler/Perry reliability. Even the standard album closing ballad, Home Tonight, rivals You See Me Crying as one of the best that isn't titled Dream On.
If you must buy just one Aerosmith album, it has to be this one. Even more essential than Toys In The Attic, Rocks is Aerosmith embracing the heavy blues sound they'd evolved to and taking no prisoners. This was the album that made them kings.

4 out of 5 stars Yep, 'Rocks' rocks.......2007-05-04

"Rocks" is a workmanlike album by Aerosmith, but also trippy in its way. "Combination," for instance, is a hazily drugged-out tune, complete with washed-out, double-tracked vocals, a great riff and lyrics that convey a sense of surrending and abiding to an overwhelming habit. Apparently, "Rocks" was made during the heyday of the Beantown Boys' drinking and drugging lifestyle, and songs like "Combination" seem to prove it. Elsewhere, "Last Child" and "Get the Lead Out" display some funk and street smarts, while "Rats in the Cellar" is a jumpin' rocker in the same fast-paced vain as Def Leppard later did on the song "Rocks Off" from the 1980 album On Through the Night. And it should be noted that all heavy metal bands from the 1980s owe a debt to the dark metal sound heard on "Nobody's Fault." As far as the softer side of Aerosmith, "Home Tonight," the closing song, might be the only moment when the band shows a hint of sentimentality. At this point of the record Steven Tyler sounds worn out, and he probably is.

Tyler has the perfect rock 'n' roll voice: raspy, high-pitched and rugged in the right places. Throw in great guitar work by Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, a little harmonica and the inevitable 1970s hand claps, and you've got yourself a classic Aerosmith CD. All these songs are arena-ready, rockin' and catchy; "Rocks" forbids sappy ballads with cheesy lyrics, thank God. The songs fly by.

Much of "Rocks" improves upon what Led Zeppelin started (see Led Zeppelin II), and much of it rocks harder than what the Rolling Stones ever did (see Forty Licks). (Weirdly, Aerosmith was accused of ripping off the Stones' sound when they started, similar to how Stone Temple Pilots were told they were Pearl Jam clones). In short, "Rocks" by Aerosmith = great rock and roll. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Aerosmith's Best Album....period........2007-04-05

It's almost a law of nature that a rock band can't be great from beginning to end. Led Zeppelin is the only band that came close. The Rolling Stones, you say? Forget it. I love them, too, but it's 2007, and their last good album was Tatoo You, 1981. Aerosmith is a very good band, but to a much lesser extent.

As with many bands, Aerosmith's early albums are undeniably their best. But while their first three albums were very good - this album is not only great, but legendary. "Rocks" was the one Aerosmith sold their soul to make. It is one of the best 10 rock albums ever - fusing rock, blues and funk consistently from first song to last. While there are so many forgettable albums - like old movies that you thought were great until you re-watch them years later, and realize that they actually suck. This one, however, stands the test of time.

I remember exactly where I was when we pulled the cellophane off the album and cranked it up on some old, crappy turntable. Me and my 8th grade pals all loved it from "Back in the Saddle" onward. The older it gets, the more I appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end or the end of the beginning?.......2007-03-12

The last great album from the original (pre-rehab) band. Classic tracks, classic attitude and a sound that threatened to shred mom and dad's hi fi speakers. That the band had perfected rock and roll attitude is demonstrated by Perry's effort to get the record titled "Aerosmith 5" despite the fact it was only their fourth album. The idea of all the fanboys trying to find the "missing" album cracks me up as much as I'm sure it did him.

All the signs of the impending crash and burn were there, but nobody made the run to the cliff look this good until Thelma and Louise 20 years later.

Like a lot of his jam-band compatriots, Dave Matthews's personality can come off as muted in the studio, but really spreads out live--which makes this a must-have for fans who don't already have the bootleg, or nineteen more from the same period. But absent a hits sampler, Live at Red Rocks could also be the best Matthews album for more tentative listeners. It draws heavily from the Under the Table and Dreaming material, as well as from the then-upcoming Crash. "All Along the Watchtower," previously only available on an indie EP, ends the set. --Gavin McNett

5 out of 5 stars They Rock at Red Rocks!.......2007-03-20

Even a live recording of the Dave Matthews Band is an ideal way to be exposed to their immense talent for the first time. This is an early recording of the group, a live performance during the summer of 1995 but further proof of how great they sounded as a live act from the beginning years. Most of the material contained here are songs from their major debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, but they do include songs that were brand new and being tested at the time, and that would eventually turn up on 1996's Crash like "Two Step," "Dive In, Drive Out," and "Proudest Monkey." There are also songs the band recorded very early on before they had a major recording contract like this show's opener in "Seek Up," one of the band's best tracks and this thirteen-minute version is a spectacular performance with smooth horns, throbbing bass lines, and Tinsley's humming violin solo that leads into Matthews' agonizing vocal. "The Best of What's Around," is like rock being fused with jazz, and "Dancing Nancies," is intense, explosive, and relentless in the way the band jams out with a climatic ending. Plus there's "Lie in Our Graves," "Ants Marching," and concluding with a tribute to the late Jimi Hendrix with an amazing version of "All Along the Watchtower." The whole set list is awesome considering how early a recording this is for the band. Another thing that makes this release so unique is how the Dave Matthews Band brought back the whole concept of recording and releasing live albums for the commerical market, and reminding music lovers how we once loved the idea of having a live concert in our living room.

If "Louisiana Bayou" on the DVD with Robert Randolph doesn't do it for you, you are already dead. Jammin' DMB at their best!

4 out of 5 stars Good Effort.......2006-01-29

I really dont like Dave Matthews music that much, but there is one thing that you have to give him and his band credit for. They are very very good musicans. This is the one album that they have that I happen to like, since I think the Live Material is much better then any of the studio work. This is a good concert to listen to, and I highly recommend it to anyone who just wants to kick back and listen to some real good jams. ENJOY

Before I review this album let me share with you a brief bit of DMB's history snce this was recorded

1996: Crash is Released
1997: This wonderful Album is released
1998: Before These Crowded Srteets is released
2000: The Lilywhite Sessions are left
2001: Everyday is released; The Lillywhite Sessions are leaked
2002: Busted Stuff is released
2005: Stand Up is released.

bow alot has changed in 10 years, and so has DMB's sound.

This 2 disc jam fest may be a shock to newer DMB fans, who are used to the radio hits.

while there are a few of those on here, they're not this recordings best stuff.

RR95 (as hardcore fans have abbriviated it) starts off with Seek Up, which dictates the pace for the rest of the concert.

the first disc is golden, straying from the radio singles(except for Satlelite which is amazing on this recording)

the second disc doesn't stop that vibe, and makes this truely a greeat live album.

To loosely paraphrase the traditional Passover question: What makes this Dave Matthews live album different from the last one he recorded at Denver's Red Rocks amphitheater a decade previously? There's a savory cover of The Zombies' chestnut "Time of the Season" strategically frontloaded, but this edition revolves largely around the Stand Up album he was ostensibly promoting on this '05 tour stand at his beloved Rocks, as witnessed by focused renditions of the title track, "American Baby" and "Dream Girl" here. But as the set's workout of "Louisiana Bayou" forcefully argues, their sense of energetic economy (and occasional, timely politicking) infuses much of the rest of Matthews jamfest ethos with renewed muscular wallop as well. The presence of a horn section and guest keyboardist Butch Taylor on some tracks ups the ante considerably, though even core band renditions of staples like disc one's expansive closer "Bartender" seem charged with renewed passion. The running order here occasionally betrays the collection was edited from four nights and a considerably wider range of performances, but the included bonus DVD gratifyingly expands upon the audio rather than simply replicating it with complimentary performances of "Crash Into Me," "Recently" and "Jimi Thing." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for DMB guys.......2007-06-06

I'm a huge DMB fan and I only have one other concert DVD. The Central Park Concert has been a great thing for me to pop in when I want to get to see them play most of my favorite songs, but it started getting old for me so I decided to get this as my second DVD to freshen things up, and it was a very good choice. Good song selection that is a little bit different from the mainstream stuff you see and I like the camera angles. The band goes crazy on Louisiana Bayou and it's very fun to see Randolph there as a guest. Everybody Wake Up is very cool, So Much To Say and Too Much are also awesome as well, and Dreamgirl is a nice mellow one. On the CD I would say that Don't Burn the Pig is a great song and I also enjoyed Stolen Away, Smooth Rider, and Hunger For the Great Light. If you want the main DMB songs, buy Central Park. If you want a variety of new songs, buy this next.

Dave Matthews have released so many live CD and this one is another collection of their great live CD!

It's amazing how much they could play the same songs they have been playing for couple years! People still loves to hear what they offer. It's amazing.

Dave Matthews Band is kinda band you could listen to their songs 41 times and still feel fresh.

4 out of 5 stars Dave almost at his best.......2006-11-20

I liked the cd for the most part. Dave Matthews Band has their own music genre. Nothing like them. This, however, wasn't my favorite Dave CD. Since it was live, Dave got a little caught up in the moment, and I don't like how he strains his voice a lot in this cd. Still pretty freaking awesome though.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible - wish there was more!.......2006-10-22

I'm a DMB obsessive, and this album was a huge addition to my collection. I've been stuck on all the old stuff and haven't really gotten into the new stuff until i bought this one. On the cd's, the highlights for me are Don't Burn the Pig, #41 (one of DMB's all time best!) and Smooth Rider. The entire DVD is brilliant, but the ones that stand out: Dreamgirl, Louisiana Bayou, Recently and Jimi Thing. If a non-DMB fan watches Recently on the DVD and is not a fan afterwards, they have serious issues. The only issue I have is that I wish there was more on the both the CD's and DVD!
Buy it - you won't regret it for a second!

Given that it's largely credited with reinventing Hollywood--or at least fostering its overweening box office expectations--it's hard to imagine that the genesis of George Lucas' sprawling, multi-billion dollar Star Wars franchise was once considered a risky studio proposition at best. But Lucas himself has wisely singled out the robust, retro-romantic music of composer John Williams as the unlikely artistic linchpin that holds all of the saga's disparate dramatic, thematic and technical elements firmly together. Boxed together here then are three of the most successful and influential film scores of modern Hollywood, work that draws as much on Williams' masterful sense of classical music history as it does his own well-studied melodic and arranging instincts. Each of the three double-disc collections here contains all of the music written for Star Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (and even Alfred Newman's intyroductory "Fox Fanfare"), newly upgraded via Direct Stream Digital remastering that adds stunning new presence and clarity to Williams' rousing, epochal scores. Each chapter also features a lenticular 3-D cover and newly designed fold-out film poster, as well as encoded disc features allowing online access to elaborate new Star Wars screen savers; the ultimate musical compendium of the original Star Wars triptych. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull Collection to have but no Orignal Art Work........2007-06-21

This is without any doubt the best musical presentation for STAR WARS trilogy with excellent remastering. Also, wonderfull music to listen.

It was arranged in same order as the movie and i think it has all the music from the films and more. Also it contain the original 20th Century Fox Fanfare recording for each movie which is rare to listen. In this way you can listen and enjoy the way was the music is recorded for each movie at that time without any enhancement, and that for Star Wars truly music lovers.

The only drawback i found that is lacking the orignal art work for each movie which are the finest and best ever. There are wonderful posters from different type, style A, B, C, and advanced, which i was expecting to see them again here or somewere els.

I was hoping and wishing from ( A Long Time Ago ... ) that they release again same original recording for Star Wars and Empire strikes back when they released first time in 1977 and 1980. I don't know why it has been decline ever since. At that time each movie released its sound track in two album with different and excellent arrangement. I believe this is a perfect arrangement and better in term of music listening. Im just hoping releasing them again with finest remastering.

4 out of 5 stars A fountain of youth for a Star Wars geek.......2007-02-13

It has been a long time since I last dared to take out my old Star Wars LP, with its well remembered skips and pops. Now, thanks to the Boxed set of the Star Wars Trilogy, I can listen to it again as it was intended to sound, and as often as I like. It is like revisiting an old friend, but there are differences: for one, there is more music, and it has been restored to its actual running order, unlike the LP which cut and spliced a bit to create rounder, perhaps more balanced listening. But for a true fan of the films, it is deeply satisfying to hear the score in its proper order and entirety, even if at times it can ramble on or shift more suddenly than a typical symphonic work. That being said, John Williams is a master at composing for film, so that even taken out of context it is beautifully listenable.
The major drawback to the boxed set is the complete lack of liner notes or any kind of commentary--one of my favorite features of the old LP were the inserted notes. So much thought went into the score that it demands commentary. Admittedly, I haven't yet been able to access the "unlock and go" feature on the internet, so perhaps the lack of liner notes on the box is rectified there. Another surprise, given the fact that there is room on the CD's to include more music, alternate takes (and even an extended secret "inner groove" on the first disc), is that in the case of episode 6, music that was added for the new edition of the film is included but not the music it replaced. Admittedly this was the least interesting music in the soundtracks, namely the "pop" music in Jabba's palace and the Ewok's chant at the end, but for the sake of completion, it should also have been included. A minor quibble, and more than made up for by the inclusion of the 20th century fanfare and the second Cantina track.
All-in-all, this boxed set is a must for anyone for whom the original trilogy was a special part of their youth. It will instantly bring you back to that state of wonder when you first saw the films, and on repeated listens it will continue to reveal the genius of John Williams.

A New Hope:

What to say about Star Wars? It's all too known to say very much. But let me just point out a few things, instead. The Main Title track, after the fanfare calms, is quoting 'Mars' from Holst's 'The Planets'. "The Dune Sea of Tatooine" is a tribute to Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'. The bonus track contains several different takes on the Main Title if you sit around and wait--there is a LOT of silence 'til it starts, but it's fascinating to hear the subtle differences from take to take. With "May the Force Be With You" and "Princess Leia's Theme", we have the beginning of the lovely, melodic leitmotifs we have come to associate with Star Wars music.

The Empire Strikes Back:

Both the best movie and the best soundtrack of the original trilogy, in my opinion. Whether or not you agree about the movie, the music here really is the best, from a professional standpoint and not just an "it's pretty!' one. Three huge things happen in this movie, musically: "Han Solo and the Princess", the love theme which is based on "Princess Leia's Theme"; "Yoda's Theme"; and, last but certainly not least, "The Imperial March". I believe the two biggest, most recognisable themes of the saga are the Main Title theme and "The Imperial March", which was constructed from half-developed "evil" cues from 'A New Hope', and also Chopin's "March funèbre, Lento" from 'Piano Sonata No.2 in B flat minor' (trust me, you know it).

The Return of the Jedi:

The only new themes (there are plentiful delectable motifs) to come out of this movie are "Parade of the Ewoks", which nearly succeeds in making the Ewoks themselves cute, and the extremely luscious "Luke and Leia". "The Emperor's Theme", introduced in 'Empire Strikes Back', is emphasised, and voices lace over the epic duel between father and son (not nearly as stimulating as the music or the fight scenes of the prequel trilogy). It is true, there are some slightly embarrassing tracks ("Threepio's Bedtime Story", "Jedi Rocks"), but somehow all is set right by the power of "Victory Celebration" (which evokes much the same in its feeling of somewhat tragic triumph that "Now We Are Free" does in 'Gladiator'). It closes the saga perfectly (and we won't be mentioning the Yub Nub song, thank you very much).

I might also mention that Star Wars themes do wonders for hearing intervals. And that knowing the intervals make relationships between themes throughout the saga that much more interesting.

I have never owned these before and I bought them for a SW Themed Party but constantly play them, if you are a fan these are a must own, especially since they include both end tracks for EP.6 the Ewok OE and the new Calypso one from the SE. Finally all of these Disc's are CD Text Capabile.

This is the best way to get the soundtrack collection of the three original films. With some minor exceptions, the tracks are in the same sequence of the films so you can follow the story unfold the same as watching the movies.
The sound quality does leave a bit to be desired overall. Granted there is only so much that can be done from the original recordings, but it seems as though they tried to over-remaster most of the tracks and did not do enough with others. This has left many of the scores sounding thin, bright and shallow. For the price of this boxed set, I would have expected a little bit more time put into making this collection sound better. Ideally, having the entire saga re-performed would have likely offered the best solution for audio purists, though likely not capatured exactly the same feel as the original performance.
Essentially, this boxed set is a trade off between having the original scores of Episodes 4 through 6 and sacrificing the overall sound quality that a John Williams performance deserves.
For a point of reference, my sound system is a B&W and McIntosh combination with the speakers being the same model as what was used in nearly all recording studios at the time of the later half of these films.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest greatest hits compilations.......2007-01-07

When you talk about greatest hits albums by rock and roll stars, this is on the short list of the all-time best of such compilations. The Stones' "Hot Rocks" records some of their hottest rock hits. One could argue that other songs deserved to be on this album (e.g., "I'm Free" or "Not Fade Away" or one of the better tunes from "Their Satanic Majesties Request"). Nonetheless, this stands up extremely well.

The 2 CD set begins with some of the oldest hits--"Time Is on My Side," "Heart of Stone," and "Play with Fire." Then, one of their greatest songs of all, "Satisfaction" (with the great guitar work of Keith Richards on this one). There follow several songs that have very different atmospherics--from the softer sounding "As Tears Go By," "Ruby Tuesday," "Let's Spend the Night Together," and "Wild Horses." There are also the more raucous rockers like "Get off of My Cloud," the marvelous "Jumping Jack Flash" (with one of the classic guitar riffs of all time), and "Street Fighting Man," the raunchy "Honky Tonk Women," and "Brown Sugar." Among the most exciting of such songs is "Midnight Rambler," a live version of their "tribute" to the "Boston Strangler," with lines that are quite evocative. Another of those strange raucous rockers: "Sympathy for the Devil." Here, they tell the story of misery over time, with the Devil at the heart of Jesus' death, the Czar's Death with the Bolshevik Revolution, World War II ("I rode a tank while the bodies stank") and the American political murders of the 1960s ("Well who killed the Kennedys?"). There are also those songs that tell stories that make one reflect a bit, such as "19th Nervous Breakdown," "Mother's Little Helper," "Paint It Black" (one of the bigger downers among hit songs in the 1960s), "You Can't always Get What You Want."

All in all, a wonderful compilation of their greatest hits from 1964 through 1971. So much quality material was produced that there was enough left over for the follow up "More Hot Rocks." While there is much good and even great Stones' material since 1971, there is nothing like the density of quality work from those few years. But, one wonders, how could there be?

If anyone is interested in understanding the roots of the Rolling Stones body of work, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Stones.......2006-09-11

The Rolling Stones were the original Bad Boys of rock. The Beatles and other groups of the early and mid-60s had a clean-cut image that the Rolling Stones deliberately flaunted with their facial expressions, appearance, and blues-influenced music that lyrically was more challenging than most other popular contemporary groups. The closest contemporary group to the Rolling Stones was Aerosmith, before they too became more commercial. Now so many groups attempt to affect a bad boy image that the image has been watered down and no longer has much meaning. But in the 60s, the Rolling Stones were the definition of rebellion and thinly veiled sexuality.

This collection of hits recalls the Rolling Stones at their most rebellious and cutting edge. In the still relatively proper (read Victorian-like) year of 1965 the song "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" bordered on being scandalous. When the boys sang with their shirts open with movements that pushed beyond Elvis Presley's hips, you knew that these lads were something different. Later songs such as "Let's Spend the Night Together" pretty removed the pretense of veiled sexuality.

As the Rolling Stones moved into the late 60s their music changed steadily, frequently anticipating the direction of popular music. The ubiquitous sitar of psychedelic 60s music makes an incredible appearance in "Paint It, Black." Their music became heavily blues influenced in songs like "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Wild Horse." The vocals on the last song particularly were heavy, plaintive and emotional, very different from the Stones' early music.

There is an on-going debate over the value of this CD versus "40 Licks." I do not have "40 Licks," which is also a fine CD. Many of the songs on this CD are represented on "40 Licks." However, "40 Licks" seems to me to belie the original Stones bad boy image because of the inclusion of so many commercial songs from the later decades of their career. "Hot Rocks" still provides the illusion of the original Bad Boy Stones at their 60s anti-establishment, rebellious best. Understanding the flavor you get from each CD, pick the one that fits what you want to hear, or buy both.

The Rolling Stones were heavily influential in the 60s. The music on this CD represents that influence, and shows The Rolling Stones during their most consistently creative and stylistically unique best. This CD is a valuable recording for any collector of Rolling Stones music or cutting edge music of the 60s.

Note that there is also an SACD version of this CD available, though at a price that is usually different from the price of this CD. Choose the version that best fits your needs!

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars a great intro to a great band.......2005-12-13

This greatest hits package got me very interested in the Stones in the mid 70s and marked a major transition in my musical tastes from pop to rock, back when I was about 13 and just starting high school. While I was long tacitly aware of them, when I was younger, I simply didn't get them. Once I became a teen, I did.

Covering on the first disk the Stones major hits, we see their transition from an r&b influenced band to a pop hit maker in the midst of swinging London, to a kind of dark, rebellious force in music (or so the press would have the world believe), exploring some rather dark, adult oriented, and/or political themes which had not apparently been explored in combination to quite that extent. Let's Spend the Night Together is the perfect track to end disk one, as it nicely segues into the classic Stones sound of disk two. It is here in which their sound becomes much looser and much more sensuous and primal. Rarely has a band written as many classic rock and roll songs as Street Fighting Man, Jumpin Jack Flash, Sympathy For The Devil, Honky Tonk Women, Brown Sugar, and Midnight Rambler. There would be more to come, but these songs, along with all the rest of disk two, are where the Rolling Stones secured their legend and their reputation as "the world's greatest rock and roll band." Who am I to argue with that assessment?

5 out of 5 stars Best Stones package on the market.......2005-08-17

I was looking for this when I picked up Forty Licks, looking back I think I should've gotten this instead but oh well. As opposed to Forty Licks, which had a bit of filler, every song here is classic. Personal favorites include Jumping Jack Flash, Sympathy for the Devil, Play with Fire, Paint It Black, Ruby Tuesday, Let's Spend the Night Together, Street Fighting Men, Gimme Shelter, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Wild Horses, Brown Sugar and virtually anything else. Every song here scores in the good-to-great range, the worst (Not like it's saying much) being As Tears Go By, Heart of Stone and Time Is on My Side.
Every compilation has missing songs. In this case, Let It Bleed, Sway, No Expectations, the Last Time, Jigsaw Puzzle and Little Red Rooster have been cruly omitted. If you want the best Stones package there is, get this. But if you want an overview, Forty Licks. It just depends on who you are.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2005-05-26

I'm not a huge Rolling Stones fan, but I do like a number of their songs very much, so I bought this greatest hits compilation and played it so much that the tape broke. Naturally, I then bought the CD. Highly recommend - even for the casual Stones fan like myself.

1 out of 5 stars Stay Away.......2006-01-05

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

4 out of 5 stars Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

5 out of 5 stars Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

4 out of 5 stars A Terrific -- if Somewhat Misleading -- Place to Start.......2006-01-02

I got on the Blooze Bandwagon (along with Elton & Bernie & Gus Dudgeon doing "Funeral for a Friend" on "Yellow Brick Road" and other assorted flights of fanstasy) a day or two after I'd taken the THC plunge with so many others in 1973.

The Golden Era ('67 to '72) had come and gone, but the legacy of the Moodies' "Big Seven" was Big Time Entertainment in the "head set" of the time. As well as much cause for discussion: The music -was- terrific, but so were the lyrics (see my review of "To Our Children's Children's Children" elsewhere). The more literate folks -- including many in the entertainment industry -- on LA's West Side were as busy dissecting them for meaning as the folks on -Manhattan's- (upper) West Side. "God was Speaking to Us," we all just knew, "and these guys are His Prophets."

If ANARR has a flaw, it's that the lyrics (and the songs) that drove us into a spiritual frenzy in those days are largely missing from what is an otherwise -super- collection. I'll forgive it myself, largely on the strength of having seen the same show on a tennis court in Indian Wells in 1994 when I really -needed- a major distraction. They delivered then as they do on this terrific double album, combining at least some of symphonic hits that established them as The Real Deal (after establishing a "pop" rep in the mid-'60s) with the MTV-era hits in the '80s, all of which are Just Fine, Thank You.

As suggested vis Pink Floyd's "Delicate Sound of Thunder" on -that- Amazon page, if you're going to take a flyer at this band, -this- album is as good a place to start as any, at least to get a taste for the -music-. But -do- bear in mind that the -poetry- that made them cult icons in the Grand Days of Psychedelia is elsewhere, specifically on "TOCCC," "On the Threshhold of a Dream," "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor" and "A Question of Balance." If the names Rogers, Perls, Neitsche, Hesse, Poe, Casteneda, Bradshaw, Miller, Krishna Murti, Si Baba and Ram Dass ring any bells for you, those lyrics will paint some real pretty pictures.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas of 2005.......2005-12-29

I am a 19 year old hooked on the Moody Blues (ironic isn't it??). Back in my early years, my mother got me hooked on the Moody Blues because we both saw the "A Night at Red Rocks" concert (which I bought on DVD before asking for the Deluxe Edition) on PBS during a donation drive. From then on, I have been a fan of the Moody Blues. My mom originally owns the single disc version of this concert on CD with less tracks than the Deluxe Edition, and let me just say I borrowed it for a long period of time. So for Christmas 2005, I asked for the Deluxe Edition of the concert, and I couldn't be more happier. This CD has the entire concert that took place on that thursday evening in September back in 1992. It is digitally remastered and even has dialogue between the music. I am right now on the fourth time of listening to the CD on my DiscMan. For the record, also, my mother was happy because after I opened this gift I went upstairs to my room, brought down her gift, and said "Merry Christmas, Mother, here is your CD." Unfortunately, she is raging with jealousy since my CD has more tracks on it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Live Moody Blues Album.......2005-04-25

A NIGHT AT RED ROCKS WITH THE COLORADO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is an exceptional Moody Blues live album that shreds CAUGHT LIVE+5 for two reasons. First of all, the earlier live album had actually been cut in 1969, when the band was high on drugs and/or drunk. Secondly, G-d created Red Rocks Ampitheater with excellent acoustics, so you can hear each instrument on its own AND as part of the whole group. The songs are all acknowledged classics, and this setting shows how Justin Hayward's, John Lodge's, and Ray Thomas's voices have deepened and matured over the years. This album is an important addition to any Moody Blues collection.

3 out of 5 stars To be my Moody Blues CD.......2004-02-16

When I was much younger, indulging in whatever I considered to be neat then, I thought of the Moody Blues as having a "message." Just a few years after that, I tired of my older brother and his friends talking of these messages, as if there was something deep and profound to be learned from the music. At the time, I still liked the classic/rock mix, known by an English acquaintance as "prog rock."

Then, while living overseas in a former British colony, I picked up a British rock encyclopedia. It's somewhat limited, leaves out many of the pop/rock bands that have gone by the wayside after their heyday was over. But under the Moody Blues in the book, the author(s) seemed to think that the MBs made it more in the US than in the UK, that people tired of their "cosmic messages." That struck a (lost?) chord with me.

Since then, I talked with a member of the National Symphony who once backed the MBs. He said the orchestra was merely a stage prop, that nothing they played could be heard (and that the MB's management particularly was arrogant and obnoxious.

Well, onto the music.

Yeah, some of it is okay in terms of melody. If I were into dancing--which I'm not--I wouldn't enjoy it. But, yeah, I can hum along. But I can only picture the orchestra, brilliant musicians, overshadowed by the pseudo-deep pop stars.

In short, if you like their music, this is the one I'd get for people who, when they're at your house, ask if you have any Moody Blues. I doubt, though, that I'll get any more. There's variety, tunes from a number of their albums without too much fluff. It even sounds like a show I may have liked to attend, though, I'm not much for rock concerts, let along "prog rock." But this'll do. Enjoy it for when the MBs have another reunion--bound to happen until they turn 70.

5 out of 5 stars Beats Them All For Live Sound.......2004-01-23

It's not too difficult to choose which of the three `live' Moody Blues albums to buy. "Caught Live" is a recording mess actually from a 1968 performance and the latest, "Hall Of Fame" has too many rough points to really impress. This "full" concert from Red Rocks is unmatched by many live recordings, especially now that it has been remastered to near perfect quality. You can actually hear the difference between the original CD recording and this remastered version - it's that good.

The song selection is standard (or classic) Moody Blues, but the Colorado Symphony adds so much more ambiance. It is not a perfect orchestra, which makes it all the more appealing with a rock band. The booklet contains great information with photos and a thoughtful essay. The DVD makes a nice companion piece, but the sound through a set of headphones is mesmerizing. The only drawback might be the songs from, "Keys To The Kingdom", but that's not much to complain about.

5 out of 5 stars Hot! Front row seats to see Etta James, 1963!.......2007-05-20

One of the greatest live club recordings in Blues, and the only one from Etta's early career. You can feel the party; folks are screaming, Etta's steaming, the whole country was still reeling from her '61 At Last! recording that will also knock your shoes off and have you rocking the house yourself. Oh, Etta sings some beautiful blues, you know, but she can rip out some heart-wrenching gutteral gospel, too; it's all here in this one-night show. Just 25 years old and in full power, Live.

The audience is up screaming and dancing from the first number and Etta immediately slides into the sexiest version of Jimmy Reed's Baby, Any Way You Want Me To Do, giving the song all new meaning. Just four years earlier Ray Charles topped the charts with What I Say, and Etta belts it out true to form with all the flavor Ray gave it, and the audience is absolutely enthralled. You are right there with them on this recording.

She puts The Beatles to shame on Money (That's What I Want), and beat them to it here, rocking out to the tune originally recorded by Motown writer Barrett Strong in 1959. The Beatles made a hit out of it in '63 only after this show. They've Etta James to thank for warming Americans up to the beat.

The house stays on their feet keeping the floor wet though a rocking bluesy Seven Day Fool and they don't get a rest till the guitarist gets to put on a show of his own with Sweet Little Angel; a B.B. King classic, sung by Etta "with a feeling" as Little Walter wrote and Paul Butterfield so famously quoted and promoted. Oh, what a feeling. The first set ends here and we break for drinks!

Encore time! Ooh Poo Pah Doo gets the fans all riled up and dancing again. You can imagine a mixed crowd of revelers, drinks and smokes set down now, see 'em Twisting in front of the band and throughout the aisles. Back to B.B. King for Woke Up This Morning in rockin' double time, and Etta finishes off her party sending everyone home sweaty and in the mood with another Jimmy Reed classic, Ain't That Lovin' You Baby.

Oh, Baby, what a night!

5 out of 5 stars Best Etta James CD Out There.......2007-01-03

Years ago a friend had this on cassette. I finally found it on Amazon.com. What a woman! What a voice! I recommend this CD to anyone who likes Etta James. This CD always gets me moving and smiling.

4 out of 5 stars ****1/2 actually.......2005-06-11

This 1963 live album finds Etta James at 25, catering to the crowd at the New Era Club in Nashville, Tennessee. And she is great vocal shape, backed by a tough R&B combo which features saxist Gavrell Cooper and his brother Vonzell on keyboards, and a great David T. Walker on guitar.

Some listeners might find James' vocal improvisations a little bit annoying at times, and a couple of songs are on the sloppy side. But most of this album is just plain great, from the opener "Something's Got A Hold On Me" to the three bonus tracks which include a driving "I Just Want To Make Love To You".
Gavrell Cooper and the tough, supple rhythm section drive along the wonderful soul stompers "Woke Up This Morning" and "Seven Day Fool", and James shows her versatility on a lovely rendition of the almost-too-cute "All I Could Do Was Cry". And Etta James have the crowd in the palm of her hand on Jessie Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo".

Fans of Etta James probably own this album already. It is one of the highlights of her career, and if you don't have it already, get it right away. This is why record companies bother to release live albums.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE A-BOMB!!.......2002-06-02

This album is the best album I own, and I own a lot of music. If you don't love the emotion, intensity, and power of this than nothing can move you.

5 out of 5 stars The toughest singer you've ever heard........2001-09-07

This album rivals B.B. King Live At The Regal for best live blues album ever. Etta James sings so tough, so ballsy, I cannot think of another singer to compare her to. She almost makes even Wilson Pickett and James Brown sound like wimps. On a couple of songs, she does some scatting you have to hear to believe. Takes my breath away everytime.

Besides the incredible singing, the other thing that makes this album a joy is the audience. Their excitement is palpable. On a couple of songs, Etta gets a thrilling call and response going with them, and their energy seems to feed her. The album is the next best thing to Etta James in person.
