Customer Reviews:
A decent compilations of the early years, with A DVD classic from the 80's.......2006-11-30
Now that Amazon has this set affordable online, you get the 2 CD's and DVD for about just a couple of bucks more than the DVD. Kiss exposed is a great DVD put together in 1987 just after the asylum album and before Crazy nights, and has a great compilation of videos and vintage footage of the original band live. The CD set is a greatest hits of the music up to the Creatures of the night release in 1982 (ie I love it loud and War machine are not on this set). Hopefully, they might release a second set of Kiss gold to cover 1982 on...although I thought they would have done that by now. I guess you can always get the 3 20th century masters Kiss CD's which cover all the year to go with this set as well. Anyway, If you want the music only, buy the 2cd set. But, for just a few bucks more, get this DVD edition if your a kiss fan.
Gold should've been an overview. .......2006-02-10
First, as much as I like "Exposed", the DVD should've been a mix of the videos they've put out, and just put out a comprehensive video collection.
Second, even though "Gold" captures the "makeup years", they went on through the 80s and 90s with some great songs, and would've made sense to end with "Psycho Circus", the most likely final KISS CD with the original members. I'm sure that in true KISS fashion, they will have another "greatest hits" out that will cover the bases.
But if you don't have the videos, get the Konfidential/Closeup 2-fer along with this one and the "KISS My A**" DVD, the "Detroit Rock City" movie for the Kommentary, "Second Coming", a copy of "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park"(even if it is silly) and esp. "KISS Unplugged" (which I think is out of print).
Universal Exploit The Fans Again.......2005-09-07
At this point, you can't blame Gene. The last four KISS hits CDs ("Very Best Of", "20th Century Masters 1", "2oth Century Masters 2", and this one) have been released by the record company independant of the band, because KISS themselves are no longer on this record label. "Alive IV", the last KISS CD released by the band, was on EMI. Of those four albums, not one presented the fans with any material they did not already own. The last KISS hits CD released by the band was "Greatest KISS" in 1996, on which the loyal fans received one (heavily overdubbed) new live recording.
This particular version of KISS "Gold" comes with a bonus DVD. Unfortunately, someone at Universal felt that this was enough reason for this package to come DVD-sized instead of in a CD jewel case. Worse, that DVD is just the Kiss "eXposed" program, which the fans already had on DVD. No bonus features either, of course.
There is some light shining through the clouds.
First off, unlike every hits album released before it (including "Greatest KISS") this one actually has liner notes. Not bad liner notes either! Some common errors have been corrected in them (Anton Fig is being listed on drums for the disco albums). Not all the errors have been corrected, unfortunately, and I believe all lineup information has been taken directly from the liner notes of the KISS monster box set.
Second, the track listing really is superb even if offering few surprises. The ground covered is the "makeup years" 1974-1982...yet for unknown reasons the entire (excellent) "Creatures Of The Night" album is absent. Instead Universal ends this compilation with two tracks from KISS "Killers", a pleasant inclusion. The liner notes end here as well, glossing over the entire last two decades of the band.
Lastly, there are a total of 40 tracks on two CDs, a very generous slice of rock n' roll indeed. This allowed Universal to include no less than five tracks from the first album! Five tracks are included from "Destroyer", four from "Alive!", and each solo record is given one track as well! Even the KISS box set didn't have anything from Gene's (although it included an unreleased demo). The disco albums are given a total of four tracks combined, and "(Music From) The Elder" is not ignored either.
The strange thing is that the compilation was assembled by Bill Levenson, who also compiled the previous three hits records. I suppose in this day and age, a band of KISS' age does need a number of hits albums. You need a good, full-length single disc for the people who want that. You need a double-disc version for the people who want a little more (and "Gold" fits the bill). And now in the 2000's you also need a budget-priced 10 track hits compilation like 20th Century Masters, so Universal has given us two, one for each era of the band. Actually, when you think about it, it all makes sense.
With that in mind, I would love to be able to give more than three stars for KISS "GOLD". However, since Universal do know that KISS fans will buy anything and everything that the band releases, be it a disco album or the umpteenth live album, they really should have put something on here for the diehards who already have all this material several times over. The "eXposed" DVD just doesn't cut it.
(Also, "eXposed" really tended to concentrate on the albums after Ace & Peter left the band, which does not fit in with the concept of KISS "Gold". It really has very little justification being here.)
To the newbies: Of all the KISS compilations available, this one is the best value for the money. You can grab the second "20th Century Masters" disc for a dip into the non makeup years if you like, but this is a good starting place.
To the diehards: You know that you're buying this out of duty, and there's nothing I can do to change your mind. Nor do I want to change your minds. I bought this too, I am listening to it as I write this, and I am enjoying it. However, I will always be dissapointed that the KISS catalogue is being so heavy on hits and live records. KISS "Gold" is merely the latest in what is sure to be a long line of them.
Hidden gem!.......2005-09-05
The only reason to get this collection, as with many collections , they put ONE unreleased track. Well, this contains the single version of "Radioactive" without the cool satanic intro. All you old fans like me who bought ALL the singles because SOMETHING was always different about the single mixes. (A Major example is "Strutter '78, TOTALLY different mix than Double Platinum") So "radioactive starts with that cool guitar chuggin' I loved so much on the single. Too bad ya have to buy a 2 CD set to get one damn alternate version. Man, I wish Universal, Def Jam or whoever will put out a true singles version CD collection. And include the extended seven plus minute version of "I Was Made For Lovin' You" only available on the rare import "Chikara" or the four song import CD single of "Psycho Circus", which also has a cool mix of "Rasie Your Glasses". Look on Amazon here for it (Mercury 566 465-2)
Great set, but get the one WITHOUT the DVD.......2005-05-04
Gold (2005.) A KISS hits compilation.
One of the greatest classic hard rock groups of all time is, without question, KISS. The group's unique breed of hard rock won over many a fan in the seventies. Even as the years progressed and key members fell out of the group's classic formation, they still managed to hold an audience. Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss are all musical geniuses - a point that has been proven numerous times over the years. One complaint many fans make, though, is that there are too many KISS compilations out there. I, for one, agree. How does this one, 2005's KISS Gold, measure up? Read on for my review.
THE GOOD:
I'm as sick and tired of KISS hits compilation as the next fan of the band is, but that aside, this is a VERY good compilation. Pretty much every big hit featuring the classic KISS foursome appears here, including Strutter, Deuce, Hotter Than Hell, C'Mon And Love Me, Rock And Roll All Nite, Shout It Out Loud, Beth, Calling Dr. Love, Hard Luck Woman, God Of Thunder, and I Was Made For Lovin' You. Furthermore, the compilation goes beyond the hits, giving you underrated gems like Cold Gin and Black Diamond. Something that gets some emphasis on here that I am very pleased to see is the 1978 solo albums. These are usually overlooked on compilations, but KISS Gold doesn't mess that up. Also, the compilation is affordable and songs are in original release order! I will not hesitate to say that this is the new definitive KISS compilation for casual fans. New to the group? This will make a great first purchase.
CONS:
I have only two major complaints with this release. First and foremost, there was really no need for this compilation to begin with. It wouldn't surprise me to discover that KISS had more hits compilations than actual studio albums! (I'm not sure if they do or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it ended up being true.) Second of all is the fact that this only covers the original era of the classic KISS formation of Stanley, Simmons, Criss, and Frehley . This means you get nothing from their eighties period, including songs like Lick It Up, Heaven's On Fire, and Uh! All Night. There is also nothing from the releases the reconciled classic formation has released. A problem exclusive to this edition is the DVD. No, the DVD isn't bad, but it jacks the price up WAY TOO HIGH. Accordingly, you should get the version without it. Still, since casual fans are really only concerned with the seventies hits, many of my complaints are very minor.
OVERALL:
My final verdict is a simple one - this is the ideal place to start if you're new to KISS. Many compilations try to fully represent the band and fall flat. The only area this one falls flat in is representing the band's eighties material, and that's a small price to pay, because it allows for more emphasis on the band's golden years. New fan? Start with this compilation if you don't intend to buy all the albums.
