Amazon.com's Best of 2001
You needn't see the film of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to appreciate the wonder, magic, and fearful chills of J.K. Rowling's phenomenal bestseller in John Williams's outstanding score. Williams typically avoids the source material for the films he scores, but he reportedly derived great pleasure and inspiration from Rowling's first Harry Potter adventure, and created a perfect motif (fully expressed in "Hedwig's Theme") to dominate his score. It's first heard as a dreamy celesta waltz and embellished through myriad incarnations and moods, often with a sinister edge befitting the darker tones of Chris Columbus's direction. Evident are fantastical allusions to Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky (among others), and Williams's epic track is "Quidditch Match," a breathtaking frenzy to accompany the film's dazzling highlight. And while Williams occasionally flirts with self-plagiarism (with inevitable variants of his Hook and Star Wars themes), this is nevertheless a richly regal score that brilliantly evokes the mystery and magic of Harry Potter's world. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Soundtrack from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Movie.......2007-05-17
We love the music from this composer (John Williams - also composed Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman) to begin with and wanted this soundtrack. It doesn't disappoint. My children are so excited about the upcoming HP movie that we play this soundtrack on the way to school each morning.
John Willams at his best!.......2007-02-20
This soundtrack is great. As you listen you can visualize what's happening just by the music! Lovely!
It too cheerful...........2007-01-25
I thnk that the soundtrack is okay. I wish some that some of the music wasn't so cheerful. Harry Potter story is not really a cheerful one. That "Prologue" piece is going to be as famos as the "star wars" theme and "superman" theme. For my I would have put a little bit of mystery in the song. I wish they would have made music called "Harry theme". I also wish John Williams would have not stoped after the 2nd one. I would have love to here his "Volemorts theme"
Not entirely up to snuff, in retrospect.......2006-12-30
It's obvious the man was still feeling out this Harry Potter thing with this first score. There is a lot of repetition, but by later soundtracks it seems to have been necessary. This soundtrack contains the original, lovely and full settings of the main Harry Potter themes.
Cousin Harry Potter.......2006-12-14
The soundtrack for all of the Harry Potter movies has been done by classical maestro and 20th century genius John Williams.
Q; Does John WIlliams make any bad music?
A: No.
Q: Does the music capture the feeling of the movie, taking you back to parts of the story sequentially?
A: Yes
Q: What are the other advantages to buying the soundtrack?
A: Aestetically, you are not competing with the visual imagery of the movie, which was technically well done and highly engaging. This provides an opportunity to explore the nuances of the musical score, without being visually distracted.
This also provides a nice day dreaming interlude for youth, who are highly structured and overprogrammed nowadays.

Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Take a look at the running times:
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.
Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31
I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.
JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10
This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.
Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13
This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!
John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28
I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Van Morrison is the second-best improvisatory singer in rock history (after Aretha Franklin), never singing a song the same way twice. What's more, he's continually fooling around with songs--both originals and covers--that never make it onto his "official" albums. The two-CD Philosopher's Stone serves up 30 unreleased studio tracks from 1971 to 1988. There are some glaring omissions (the 1971 Pacifica High sessions, his collaborations with Bob Dylan and Chet Baker), but what's here (including collaborations with Mark Isham, Jackie DeShannon and the Chieftains) is fun, and two tracks ("Flamingoes Fly" and "Stepping Out Queen") are incandescent. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Oh What a Joyous Sound!.......2007-05-31
THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE is proof positive that Van Morrison is almost as bad at choosing which songs to release and which to leave in the vaults as Paul McCartney is. (Paul should really release a collection like this too, but that's another story altogether.) Comprised of unreleased songs spanning the years from 1971-1988, this is a two-disc, two-and-a-half-hour windfall that belongs in the collection of any serious Van Fan.
The first CD plays better than the second as a whole, mostly because the recordings collected here cover a shorter span - specifically the period between 1971 and 1976 - lending it, if not a sense of cohesion, then at least a more uniform sound. Highlights? "Madame Joy" is a buoyantly nostalgic look back at that girl every boy wanted. The emotionally shattered "Not Supposed to Break Down" viciously indicts society's demands that we keep our emotions locked inside. The eight-minute original version of "Wonderful Remark" far outstrips its latter-day counterpart in its airy grace. "Drumshanbo Hustle" is the product of Van's by-now familiar disdain for the record industry, but is much sharper and generally better than his bitter screeds of the 90s. The searing funk of "Naked in the Jungle" forms the backdrop to one of Van's most intense vocal performances. The title of the slight-yet-touching "Lover's Prayer" says it all; same goes for the breezy "Laughing in the Wind". And that's not even half of Disc 1.
After the release of 1974's VEEDON FLEECE, Van Morrison went on hiatus until 1977. Over the course of these years, reports surfaced that Van was in the process of recording a new album, but nothing came of these rumours. Many of these sessions are present here, spread out over the end of Disc 1 and the beginning of Disc 2. And if Van Morrison had indeed made an album with these songs, it would have easily been his best album since ST. DOMINIC'S PREVIEW, and would have retained that title until 1979's masterpiece INTO THE MUSIC.
Disc 2 is, as mentioned above, somewhat more uneven, but a treasure trove of great songs nevertheless. It kicks off with this set's lost masterpiece, "The Street Only Knew Your Name". This flawless gem of a song would seem to foreshadow Van's nostalgia obsession of the 80s and 90s, but its sound and peerless vocal performance are pure 70s Van. The disc then progresses through a pair of blues covers and alternate takes of songs from A PERIOD OF TRANSITION and INTO THE MUSIC, with a great new cut (the pensive "I Have Finally Come to Realize") thrown in for good measure. This brings us up to the 80s, where the highlights are fewer but the quality is still high: the straight-up R&B of "Street Theory", Van's cover of Robin Williamson's poetic "For Mr. Thomas", and "High Spirits", a suitably rousing leftover from the Chieftains collaboration IRISH HEARTBEAT, especially stand out from this period.
Van Morrison is one of the most prolific writers, recorders, and performers in all rock music. He's released almost an album a year since 1970, and it's clear from THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE that he had, and probably still has, even more just waiting in the vaults. And not just odds and ends either; the vast majority of the selections are fully-formed, well-performed songs that, for whatever reason or another, Van simply chose not to release. Just another testament to the staggering talent that is George Ivan "Van the Man" Morrison.
The greatest living vocalist on planet earth period.......2007-01-22
For a so called B side/un-released song collection this is ridiclously good. Van is a seminal arist for the more mature music ears. Only a place like Ireland with its love for music and the arts could produce a mystic, poetic genius like this.
He is a rare artist that puts the corporate music biz to shame. His concerts sell out in minutes without any promotion and i think he has even surpassed his hero Bob Dylan. We will be telling our kids about the genius of Van morrison. He is the best white soul/blues singer on earth today. On his last tour the tickets for his concert in nashville sold in 12 minutes. Long live Van. We need him to keep going to shame the no talented teenyboppers and MTV sellouts.
The Street That Knew My Name.......2005-07-27
Somehow I had either forgotten and/or misplaced my Phil Stone CD
and played it this past week. The years have gone by so quickly and Van's catalog has always been impressive.....so the headphones came out and I was again transformed... to another place and time and then back again to today.
I have read all 35+ reviews and agree with most all in some way or another but I do feel that PS is a masterpiece in so very many ways. Van shouts, growls...has the eternal "Fire in his belly" and brings us a sense of the blues and funk and gospel. As has come to be expected, VM had the presence of mind to use musicians of such stellar quality....especially the brilliant piano work of Jef Labes to forge this expensive gem.
As was noted by another reviewer, it is worth it alone for the superb, as yet unmatched, soulful version of "The Street...."
Damn!!!, what a sound, what charts, what a sax, a "Joyous Sound"
that no one save for Ray Charles has ever exhibited on vinyl.
I just love this mans' music.

Buy it for The Streets Only Knew Your Name, the finest Van Morrison composition and performance of all time and one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. If you've never heard the forgettable version he released on Inarticulate Speech of the Heart, avoid it like the plague. If you have heard that, this version will make you forget you ever did.
Rest of the record is quite good as well for a collection of outtakes, especially Madam Joy, Really Don't Know, and Mr. Thomas.
As 'bootleg' collections go, the music is really solid.......2005-02-01
Van Morrison, one of rock's finest songwriters and arguably it's finest singer, crafted a number of strong albums, and that's where most should start. However, once you get through ASTRAL WEEKS, MOONDANCE, and the rest, if you still want more, PHILOSOPHER'S STONE is an excellent set to get. The packaging is a bit lacking (incorrect dates and lyric transcriptions, and even though Van wrote track-by-track notes, he decided not to include them), but as far as content goes, this is an excellent selection of unreleased studio material. Unfortunately, it doesn't include any content like demos or outtakes before the 1970's (hopefully there will be a Volume Two that includes them), but what's here is surprisingly consistent. Even the weaker material like "Twilight Zone" is enjoyable for Van's singing.
Few artists merit collections like these, because in order for them to work, one has to be prolific and, more importantly, shelve 'rejects' that hold up to their best work; this set fulfills both requirements. A strong, early version of "Wonderful Remark" arguably trumps the released version. "Madame Joy" and "Contemplation Rose" are beautiful tracks that could've salvaged HARD NOSE THE HIGHWAY (one of his weakest albums); so could've "Drumshanbo Hustle," an angry, vitriolic song against the music industry that miraculously transcends its bitterness. Then there's "Naked Jungle," possibly his greatest stab at funk, and excellent compositions like "The Street Only Knew Your Name" and "I Have Finally Come To Realize" that disprove the notion that he had trouble coming up with new material in the mid-70's (trouble releasing it, but not writing and recording it). Even better is "Crazy Jane On God," which was meant for release but had to be temporarily shelved for legal reasons (based on a Yeats poem, he didn't get permission to use it); in less capable hands, it could've been a pretentious disaster, but it's surprisingly accessible and works very well here.
It's an expensive set at $30, and for that reason, I'd recommend this only if you've already explored his best work: the early classics with Them, ASTRAL WEEKS, MOONDANCE, ST. DOMINIC'S PREVIEW, VEEDON FLEECE, IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW, and INTO THE MUSIC, for starters. If your appetite is still strong by that point, than PHILOSOPHER'S STONE will definitely come in handy.

Dull Epics.......2006-09-27
EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.
Very Disappointing .......2006-09-27
EPICS is very disappointing. It is nowhere up to the usual standards of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The recordings are harsh and just too showy. There is no heart, only might and if these are supposed to be epics, what is MINORITY REPORT doing there?
Chilling versions of the best scores ever written.......2004-04-24
This cd is an essential for any person that particularly enjoys the score in films. Epics is a full length cd containing 14 songs performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under Erich Kunzel.
Usually, I am weary of cds that come out with songs from movies that aren't the original recordings, but I have to say there should be no worries with this cd. The songs remain exactly the same in tempo and sound as you hear them in the movies.
The choices for this cd was amazing. Every song that you hear are the songs that make the movie it is in, most often giving you chills and goosebumps as the music encompasses you into the movie (like what happened to me when I saw Lord of the Rings). From the Theme from 2001: a Space Oddysey to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones to Lord of the Rings, these songs are performed beautifully with a clear and crisp sound.
I am hoping for an Epics II to be released someday, but in the meantime, check this out, you will NOT be dissappointed!

A great collection.......2004-02-28
This is a really fabulous collections of songs. There is a great balance of old and new. This isn't a collection from one single genre and the diversity keeps the mix interesting. It's great to hear songs that wouldn't normally be noticed while a movie is playing and it's also great to hear those easily recognizable tunes from popular movies.

Dull Epics.......2006-09-28
EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.
I miss the old days.......2006-06-10
While the original compositions that this recording is based off of were all notable compositions, worthy of recognition and inclusion on a compilation disc such as this, it pains me to say that the Telarc/Cincinatti team has fallen from glory with this one (and a few others). Contrary to other reviewers, Kunzel was not the arranger for most or all of these. Someone named Jospeh Price, a name I hope never to see again on a Telarc recording unless immediately preceded by the words "not arranged by". I cannot stomach his cliched, bombastic, and empty endings most of all, but the arrangement (or despoiling of) the Lord Of The Rings themes is probably the worst mustical travesty I've come across. There is no resemblance to the original work except by accident. The only tracks I care for at all on the disc are the ones untouched by him, including the Overture from Lawrence of Arabia, the Harry Potter themes (apparently a Williams arrangement), and perhaps another track or two. Overall a painful experience. Try some vintage Kunzel instead.
Terrific!.......2004-05-03
Simply goes to show that good music is more than the composition: Arranging and conducting are the other elements which Eric Kunzel is a master at. The "Magnificent Seven" is a masterpiece of knowledge of the intent of the piece, instrumentation and clever ways of brining out the best that each instrument has to offer.
Fabulous compilation of movie themes!.......2004-01-25
This is one of the best movie theme compilations I have come across in a long time. With Erich Kunzel's able hands, the beautiful themes from "The Lord of the Rings," "Gladiator," "Harry Potter," "Dr. Zhivago," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Ben Hur" and others are vividly brought to life.
My favorite has to be the "Fellowship of the Ring" suite which, at over 6 minutes, is the longest track in the CD. It includes the fabulous themes I love from the film such as the Hobbiton, Mines of Moria, Amon Hen, Isengard and Breaking of the Fellowship themes from the original soundtrack. The "Gladiator" suite comes as a close second but there really isn't a mediocre theme music in this collection. Erich Kunzel has done a fabulous job of selecting, orchestrating and arranging these wonderful pieces and I consider this one of the best classical CDs in my collection. Superb!
"the grand scale of film music ~ Kunzel & the Pops".......2003-11-18
If it's powerful and majestic music you're looking for, you've come to the right place with Telarc's release of "Epics", featuring the world renown Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of maestro Erich Kunzel. Flawlessly recorded with exceptional detail from Direct Stream Digital (masters made during the recording sessions with the Sony/Philips DSD recording system) and it shows, believe you me you've never heard anything like it.
In most cases the performances closely match the original film score themes ~ listening to this album is like watching the film all over again, as the tension builds up and the release is right in your face ~ just like being there. Quality sound is the reason to purchase this CD, simply amazing.
Many "film-score-buffs" will already have some or many of the cues in their collections ~ but for the avid collector this is a dream come true. All under one umbrella is Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Tan Dun, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, John Williams and Hans Zimmer doing what they do best...composing!
Listen to the scores within "BEN HUR", "CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON", "DOCTOR ZHIVAGO", "HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE", "GLADIATOR", "GONE WITH THE WIND", "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA", "LORD OF THE RINGS:THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING", "MAGNIFICENT SEVEN", "MINORITY REPORT", "PEARL HARBOR", "SPARTACUS", "STAR WARS, EPISODE II:ATTACK OF THE CLONES" and "2001:A SPACE ODYSSEY" many Golden Globe nominees and winners, while others were Academy Award nominations and winners ~ whatever category they fell in...they were all winners on the grand scale of "Epic Film Music" ~ gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:
Magical but also disappointing.......2004-12-29
I have enjoyed it but only so far. Imagination reigns and you expect unrealistic scenes, but there is a limit. At some stage Harry is given an 'invisibility cloak' left to him by his deceased parents. Soon after he has to hide from the badies. The invisibility cloak would have come in handy there but he appears to forget all about it. My five-year old son commented: why is he not hiding under the magic coat? When flaws are spotted by five-year olds, then there must be something wrong. In this Harry Potter madness are we losing our sense of criticism?
EXCELLENT!.......2004-06-29
Excellent, the best I've heard in a while. It doesn't only have the original motion picture soundtrack, but it also has the bonus CD with all those extras... deffinitely, a must-buy.
Harry's Magic.......2003-07-03
An excellent soundtract to an excellent movie. Haunting suspensful ad compelling. Very imaginative and avoids the repetition of some movie soundratcks. One of the greats i'd say If you love the moive and the book your gonna love the music. Helps to bring the imagery of the movie back. Worth buying
Not Available.......2003-06-05
I wanted this CD, but after ordering it, I got the Chamber Of Secrets instead - twice! - the replacement copy was also the COS. I gave up at that point.
Charming music and fun with the trailers.......2002-05-26
I have been a fan of John Williams' music since the first Star Wars film. For that movie, Williams composed a theme for each character in the same way that Prokofiev did with his musical story, Peter and the Wolf.
This has been done again for the Harry Potter film, with a theme for Harry, a theme for his owl, Hedwig, a Hogwarts school song, a Nimbus 2000 theme, a theme for the Quidditch match and a very dodgy corny theme for Voldemort, which goes Vol - de -mort, Vol- de- mort: not Williams' most inspiring creations.
Williams has created unusual harmonies and melodies to reflect the mystical subject matter very effectively. For instance, there is something [intentionally] weird about the Hogwarts School Song, and the Christmas Music is a little like the music you hear during the festive season, but also slightly odd. These quirks are what makes the music in the film special. I don't think you will find many people whistling the tunes, though!
The bonus CD has trailers in English, French, German, Italian, Korean and Thai. It is great fun to watch the same trailer in all the different languages.
You will find the audio CD a bit repetitive, because the Hedwig theme is repeated over and over, without much variation. But the music is enjoyable, nonetheless.
