Customer Reviews:
Probably the finest way to own a Collection of the Duo's work.....(Without buying a Boxset!!!).......2006-07-18
There are umpteen Simon and Garfunkel compilations out there, all vying for your money. And for those of you that are a little shy of forking out for a boxset, there's 2003's `The Essential Simon and Garfunkel' being amongst the strongest efforts. So what makes this as this effort stand out from the crowd???....well, this is one of those compilations that occupies a slightly weird middle ground, by being suitable for those that probably want to buy just the one purchase of a Simon and Garfunkel compilation, that not only contains the hits, ("Mrs. Robinson," "The Sound of Silence", "The Boxer", "I am a Rock", "Bridge over troubled water", "Cecilia") but also goes a little further that all the biggest hits, and includes albums tracks, and lesser know tracks that stand up as admirably as the most popular work: ( "The only living boy in New York", "Fakin' It", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "A Hazy Shade of Winter", "My Little Town", Kathy's Song").
This (with the exception of picking up a boxset), is arguably the most comprehensive compilation of the duo's work. It tops the `Essential Simon and Garfunkels' 33 tracks, by having a impressive 40 tracks, spread over two disks. Obviously this wouldn't mean much if those extras tracks where merely forgettable, and might merely drag the standard of the compilation down, but thankfully this is a masterfully compiled selection of tracks, that will surprise those that, only know the hits, by making a superbly rounded summary of the Duo's career, encapsulating their early bittersweet and sentimental folk numbers with the mainstream friendly amiable and reflective pop songs, that brought them a much larger audience. And it's here that this compilation really comes into its own, because unless you have the majority of the Duo's work, there's likely to be a fair bit of material that you either (A) Haven't heard in Years, or (B) Is completely new to you, and startles at its brilliance.
Several things, that I feel are important to note, is that the musical fidelity of the recordings is brilliant....sure, it's not been mastered in a relatively cutting edge music format (SACD, etc..), but few will complain with the mastering that has been done here, with every note and word, perfectly sequenced and mixed, it's gratifying to hear that the label actually put some effort into the mastering process for this release. Which leads me onto the next point, which is more significant....the majority of the tracks here, almost sound like brilliantly edited `Live' versions of the tracks. They're probably not...but there certainly a more muscular sound and resonance to the tracks, that I simply don't remember the regular studio albums having (I put on a couple of tracks from the "Bridge over Troubled water" studio album, and it seemed far weaker in comparison). Some tracks in particular, sound noticeably fuller and more prominent than usual. Maybe it's just me...but I simply wouldn't want to trade in this compilation for any of the other dozen or more Simon and Garfunkel compilations knocking around out there, for fear of getting (by comparison) muddy and muffled versions of these songs.
But, Irrespective of that, it has to be said, that this really is the most comprehensive and impressively compiled compilation of the Duo's work. It's goes beyond just given the causal listener the hits, and has enough material to satisfy those that might already own a couple of the Duo's studio albums, and yet remains accessible enough for those that want to dig into the Duo discography a little deeper, without having to shell out bucks for a boxset, and the sound is brilliantly mastered. It's entirely possible, that even if you're a big fan of the Duo's work, you can pretty much get all you need from just owning this truly superlative effort.
40 Gems.......2006-03-29
This excellent compilation includes all of this famous duo's best-loved classics. They had a flair for combining poetic lyrics with unforgettable melodies and ruled the charts for most of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The Bridge Over Troubled Water album - a greatest hits collection in itself - stayed on both the USA and UK charts for years. Sound Of Silence articulated a particular late 60s urban youth feel in its images of subway walls and graffiti, while Homeward Bound is filled with loneliness and redemption.
Mrs Robinson appeared on a movie soundtrack and El Condor Pasa with its lovely Amerindian flutes remains quite unique. All these songs are classics, but my favourites include The Boxer, America, I Am A Rock and the lively, upbeat Cecilia. You can't go wrong with this album where every track is worth its weight in gold.
Exceptional compilation, superbly remastered.......2002-12-09
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were better together than apart, because they had such different talents. Paul was a brilliant songwriter - certainly one of the best of his generation - and a good singer without being anything special. Art was not a songwriter, but he had a superb voice which brought out the best in Paul's songs.
So, here we have 40 of their finest recordings, digitally remastered to sound better than ever, with most of the songs written by Paul and Art doing most of the singing. Of course, all the obvious tracks are included - Bridge over troubled water, Mrs Robinson, Homeward bound, Sound of silence, The boxer, Cecilia, Feeling groovy, I am a rock, America and El condor pasa (If I could) - but this collection contains a further 30 tracks which are all of a very high quality.
Among them are Hazy shade of winter (a song revived brilliantly by the Bangles in the eighties), the upbeat but rueful Keep the customer satisfied, Baby driver - another upbeat song, a live cover version of Bye bye love, not forgetting the superb Scarborough fair/Canticle.
After the split, Paul and Art each had some success as solo singers, but despite some great individual moments, they never achieved the level of consistency separately that they achieved together - and this is the best collection you'll ever find, unless you want to go for the boxed set from which these tracks were selected.
Best Sounding Simon and Garfunkel Ever.......2002-02-12
I have bought many Simon and Garfunkel CD's over the years but this is the best sounding ever. A great helping of all the singles plus a generous helping of LP tracks this is the compilation to get. Released as a double in Canada as well.
Great music from the dynamic duo.......2001-11-23
The lyrical genius of Paul Simon and the melodic tones of Art Garfunkel are what makes Simon and Garfunkel, and this compilation album of their greatest hits is a fantastic addition to the folk-lovers music collection. Stand out songs include "Sound Of Silence", "Scarborough Fair", "We've Got A Groovy Thing Going", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", and of course, "Mrs Robinson".

Misses two key hits.......2005-05-22
Like "The Best of Carly Simon" and this 1998 "Very Best of", both do not include Jesse (a huge hit from 1980) or the Kris Kristoffesen penned hit "I've Got to Have You". Besides that, this collection is quite good, but I urge people to import the Australin version of the 2004 collection "Reflections" which includes both this impressive and should not be forgotten Carly classics.
Record companies take note: Don't omit the obvious tracks just to fill with other songs that no-one knows.
Great Rendition Of Carly's Greatest Hits! .......2004-08-03
Singer and songwriter Carly Simon magically walked the tightrope between what was commonly referred to as folk and pop music in the early 1970s and gradually emerged from the shadow of other folk titans to become a pop singer of verve and moment, earning herself a place in the pantheon of very successful singers like Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, and a number of others like Carol King who were on the pop charts and in the folk clubs earlier in their career. This album is a wonderful summary of the best of her efforts throughout her career, including those early years. From her breakthrough hits like -That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be- and -Anticipation- to later smash singles like -Loving You Is the Right Thing To Do- and -You're So Vain- (rumored to be written about everyone from James Taylor to Mick Jagger, but more likely a joke aimed at actor Warren Beatty) is all here.
This collection successfully gathers the best of those early years in one place, and then adds to it those superb follow-on efforts with a second CD that reprises her second stage efforts with another collection of more adult-centered pop hits. Even though I usually prefer to sample an artist in context in their early albums, even I have to admit this is a great comprehensive overview of the collective efforts from Carly Simon. There are a lot of good songs here, like the terrific -Legend In Your Own Time- about then beau James Taylor, and the rocking -Mockingbird-, a duet done with Taylor.
Indeed, there are other interesting, provocative, and beautiful selections here, including my own personal favorite, -I Haven't Got Time For The Pain-. This is a great look at a fascinating artist who later made a terrific comeback album called -Coming Around Again-, with hits such as the title cut, as well as superb numbers like -The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of- to regain her audience and popularity, which she used to great advantage in the years since, with a number of hits included here from -Better Not Tell Her- to -All I Want Is You-, and from -It Happens Every Day- to -Like A River-. It is one of her best and most representative greatest hits albums yet, and it gives us an interesting vantage point with which to understand her better. This is a terrific greatest hits album by an artist who is often under-appreciated. This is one I heartily recommend. Enjoy!
Still 5+++ stars, but read updated review for more choices.......2004-04-23
This is an updated review as although the original still holds, but there are is one and soon will be another that were not available when I bought this in late 2001, and I wanted to share the news with you guys as you have helped me for so many years.
This was the very first 1 CD release of Carly's work that had almost every song of hers that I wanted to hear. Even the 3 CD box set did not include her Arista hits and was a must for all fans when I originally bought it. I overlooked the import steep price as it was worth more than worth it. I finally got to hear "Let The River Run" from the soundtrack to "Working Girl" next to all my favorites.
At the time I said that I wished that more companies would cooperate with one another to produce greatest hits collections that reflect the career of artists who may have had more than one home during their career. If it's about money, they can split it on a hit by hit basis, and in the end more products will sell. Well, I guess that I was not the only one to see the advantages of putting together ALL of Carly's better known work as in 2002 Rhino release the magnificent 2 CD release titled "Anthology," which is even better than this one as it is obviously more comprehensive and BMG Heritage will be releasing a remastered 1 CD release in early May, 2004 so based on the play lists I would recommend these two domestic releases over this one, which still warrants 5 stars and was the first release to shoot for more than just a part of Carly's career.
Carly's Elektra and BMG material in one CD.......2004-02-07
Carly's so vain...she probably thinks this review's about her. And she's right, but not vain. Rather than go the Elektra-years compilation, I chose this import because it included the singles from both her that era and her later BMG years, plus included my favourite song by her and an Oscar winner for best song. But Carly Simon played an important role in the emergence of the soft rock and singer/songwriters following the radicalism of the 60's. In its place were songs of a more personal, vulnerable, and introspective nature, putting her in the same league as her husband from 72-83, James Taylor, Carole King, and Joni Mitchell. Here are highlights from the 19 songs here.
Her signature tune, "You're So Vain," from her third album, and the famed refrain, "you probably think this song is about you, don't you?" targeted either her earlier squeeze Warren Beatty or Mick Jagger, who sang backup vocals-I'm not sure what the jury's decided. Hardly surprising that a line from this song, "clouds in my coffee" was used as the title of her box set. Yet, a pleading sensitive song like "You Belong To Me" penned with Michael McDonald, with its "you don't have to prove your love to strangers" could be a less caustic way of preventing a sig. other from becoming an ex-sig. other.
The 70's was also a period of feminism, and its influence can be felt in the haunting and questioning piano and strings "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" from her self-titled Elektra debut. The deadlock and misery of "silent noons, tearful nights, angry dawns" in her friends' marriage caused her to question the effectiveness of marriage, an institution where one "moved in together, and raised a family of our own/you and me."
Speaking of marriage, the cover of Inez and Charlie Foxx's "Mockingbird" was a #5 duet with her husband James Taylor, and it's clear that he benefitted more, as his previous albums never went beyond gold.
"Anticipation" is another early classic hit, but it rankles me that it was used in a ketchup commercial. Thank goodness for plastic squeeze bottles!
Carly's film songs numbered quite a bit, and they include the string-arranged slow-dancing ballad from The Spy Who Loved Me, the Carole Bayer Sager/Marvin Hamlisch-penned "Nobody Does It Better." I'll bet 007 got an ego trip from hearing "you're the best" from her #2 hit. Her piano and synth-oriented song "Why" was used in Jonathan Kaufer's Soup For One and was a UK hit in 1982. It asks that question "Why does your love hurt so much?"
Two of her film songs were for Mike Nichols films. The first one is my favourite song by her, from Heartburn and the title track of her first Arista album, Coming Around Again. "I know nothing stays the same/but if you're willing to play the game/it's coming around again/so don't mind if i fall apart/there's no room in a broken heart." One of the producers was the person she found comfort in following her divorce from James Taylor, drummer Russ Kunkel. And the other songs from that album, such as "The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of" and "All I Want Is You" showed she had lost none of her touch, although songs like "Give Me All Night" showed 80's-stylings in her music.
Finally, the Oscar winner, "Let The River Run" from Working Girl, featuring rock guitar, gospelish choirs, religious references ("the new Jerusalem") and soaring vocals.
"Like A River" is a 1994 song showing that her talent hasn't exhausted. The aftermath of a mother's death and the fighting over the inheritance, a "metaphor for what's wrong with us," leads to her asking her mother what's she doing now, and being reminded of past memories, but most of all, she accepts that while their time together on Earth is over, there's always the afterlife.
A worthwhile retrospective to a woman who conveyed her inner spotlight into poetry, verse, and then song.
Outstanding single CD collection of Carly's finest music.......2004-01-10
Carly has had long and distinguished career but this collection manages to include most of the essentials. Personally, I think Carly really deserves more than one CD and if Anthology (an American double CD containing all but one of the songs here and much else besides) had been available when I bought this, I would have bought that instead.
From my perspective, there were two peaks in Carly's career - her seventies hits and her late eighties album, Coming around again. Between them, they dominate this collection, although there are other great tracks here, most notably Why.
Carly began her successful period in the seventies via the American hits That's the way I've always heard it should be and Anticipation. Britain then discovered her music and subsequent hits charted in both the UK and USA, though Carly remained more popular in America. Her international hits from the seventies include You're so vain, The right thing to do, Mockingbird (a duet with James Taylor) and Nobody does it better (a James Bond theme). Carly's only big hit of the early eighties was Why, although she released some interesting albums during that time. In the late eighties came the album Coming around again, possibly her best ever. It is represented by four tracks - The stuff that dreams are made of, All I want is you, Give me all night and the title track. A few later tracks are also included, most notably the Oscar-winning Let the river run (from Working girl).
For many years (until the more recent Reflections compilation), this was easily the strongest single-CD collection of Carly's music but the import price is about the same as the double CD Anthology, so buy that or Reflections instead.

Customer Reviews:
A great tribute for a truly great artist.......2007-04-22
If you want to know about Tito Gobbi, this is the set for you. Truly the very best of this phenomenal baritone, one of those rara avis in opera (both a great singer and a great actor).
On both CDs, is Gobbi in his finest: from comedy (All'idea di quel metallo/Come Paride vezzoso) to tragedy (Nemico della Patria), from grand opera (Cruda, funesta smania) to verismo (Si puo?).
The first CD includes some selections of less known operas (such as Zazà, Fedora, I gioielli della Madonna or L'arlesiana) that adds value thanks to Gobbi's artistry.
But it is truly on the second CD where Gobbi shines as the powerful artist he was. Devoted entirely to Giuseppe Verdi's incredible rols for baritone, track after track Gobbi reveals himself as one of the milestones in opera; his deeply emotional approach of Di Provenza il mar (La Traviata) and A tal nome palpito (Simon Boccanegra) matches perfectly with the grandeur of Eri tu (Un ballo in maschera) or Dio che nell'alma infondere (Don Carlo), and chilling Pietà rispetto amore (Macbeth) and Iago's Credo (Otello).
Cherry over the cake: his portrait of Falstaff...
Do not miss this album. Not only a excellent tribute to Gobbi, but also one of the best double sets of The Very Best series of EMI.
Pleased to find this CD........2006-11-10
A wonderful collection of the roles sung by this superb and multi-talented
baritone of days long gone. In 65 years as an opera lover, I never heard a
better Figaro or a more bone-chilling Scarpia.

Customer Reviews:
Maybe the Only Elgar Compilation You'll Ever Need........2006-12-07
Naxos' "Very Best Of Elgar" compilation is probably the most comprehensive overview ever of Edward Elgar's best known work. For those who are unfamiliar with this great British composer, this double-CD set serves as a perfect introduction to his music. Two out of five of his famous "Pomp and Circumstance" marches are here as well as excerpts from his two symphonies, violin and cello concertos, the famous "Nimrod" movement from his "Enigma Variations" and the "Cockaigne Overture".
Also included in this set are lesser known works such as excerpts from his Violin Sonata, String Quartet, Piano Quintet and choral works (Ave verum corpus, The Apostles and The Dream of Gerontius).
Each disc features over 70 minutes of music and includes brief annotations about the music in the CD booklet.
With all this said, "The Very Best Of Elgar" is a very satisfying compilation and is very well put together.
Great Collection.

60+ minutes...good selections.......2001-01-18
I bought this first and foremost to have a good version of Vivaldi's Guitar Concerto in D...there is an "ultimate" version of Vivaldi's Guitar Concerto in D-Largo out there somewhere...this is not it, but it's good nonetheless. If you are looking for a good classical guitar CD, this fits the bill.
Right..........2000-08-15
... for a long time I have loved guitars, everything about them made swell up inside like a kid blowing out his brithday candles. However, I never really given thought about guitars being classical. When ever I heard the word "Classical" I thought of pianos and violins. Boy, was I wrong, the guitars in this are absoulutely phenomenal, they make me very relaxed and in harmony with the strings and the music. And, this CD is not bad at all. And for a great price, I mean REALLY great price you can get this CD.

THE BEST OF THE BEST.......2004-08-03
Just come back home from Rome, after seeing them live at the Colosseum, a sheerly magical experience, last Sat 31, 04. I just can't help listening to these songs, they can be certainly considered some of the best tunes ever written and performed, together with my other favourite band's music, The Beatles. I recommend this album to all good music lovers, so buy it and give it to your friends and dear ones! Love, @.
