Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, later tracks such as "Hammer to Fall" as much as prime-era numbers such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Killer Queen," and "You're My Best Friend." The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

I really started to like Queen recently. Bohemian rhapsody is such a great song and really gets you moving. My husband likes running to this music. I am still getting used to some of the other songs, but I really like this CD. Whenever I listen to We Are the Champions, I think of the episode of Cheers when all of the bar boys pounded on the bar to this song. It's fun. As always, Amazon seems to have the best prices. I don't have to pay shipping or tax and save an additional dollar or two on top of that.

This creation is one remarkable piece of history! I'm so thankful I got it, and for such a nice price you get almost 40 songs! With their incorporation of piano and Freddie Mercury's voice, and their guitarist- this thing just blows out your ears in amazement. I had heard so many of these songs on the radio, but who knew they did all of them? Bicycle Race first annoyed me with so much repitition, but with my love for bike-riding, it's become a motto for me to. Killer Queen is just WOWZERs... so sexy and loaded. And there's tons more, but I'll save those as super surpise you'll be glad you got!

Rarely mentioned as one of the great double albums, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road had to settle for ending up in a few million record collections. So sprawling that it doesn't quite measure up to the earlier, more laid-back Honky Chateau or the later, pushy Rock of the Westies, this still holds claim to a lot of brilliant, very pop-savvy music: the winking rebellion of "Bennie and the Jets" and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," the ready-made nostalgia of "The Ballad of Danny Bailey," the downbeat melodicism of "Harmony." --Rickey Wright

Rightly this album is rated as the greatest album Elton John ever made. In fact its not my favourite but thats a different story.

The breadth of material on this is amazing. It opens with 'Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' which is a stunning prog-rock overture followed seamlessly by a hard rock song. Remember before he became Elton John the young Reg Dwight auditioned for both King Crimson and Gentle Giant!
Following track 1 is the original and best version of Candle in the Wind. Sadly this tune has been overplayed... Bennie and the Jets is track 3. A great crowd pleaser (with artificial live feel on the track). This track was huge in the U.S. and it went to the top of the R&B charts. It also best displays Elton's Piano playing and has a completely unique feel to it.

The title track Goodbye Yellow Brick Road sounds like a standard that was written in the 40's or 50's. This is one of those songs that Elton will be remembered for in the decades to come.

On these opening tracks you can hear (but not see!) everything that made Elton such a huge star:
Primarily great song-writing, but also high quality musicianship - listen to Nigel Olsson's drumming or Davey Johnstone's guitar playing on this album.

With one exception the rest of the album maintains a similar high standard. Jamaica Jerk-Off is the one track I really don't like but there's 16 others so I'm not complaining!

In 1973, Elton John released his first and only double-album, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". While he also made several other truly fantastic albums in that era, this one always stands out for me as being a completely flawless and true masterwork.

First off, the album opens with the epic "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" which easily ranks as one of my favorite songs of all time. The placement of the songs on this record make for smooth transitions between each song. There's never a track for me that makes me want to skip. Elton John is in top form here. While technically considered a "pop" album, it easily ranks next to such classic albums as Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", or Led Zeppelin's "Zoso". It's a mostly upbeat album, with a few mellower songs (Candle in the Wind, Sweet Painted Lady, I've Seen That Movie Too) and makes for a great album to bring along on a road trip.

It's not as compact and ragtime-ish as "Honkey Chateau", and not as personal as "Captain Fantastic", but it's downright fun the entire way through and will always stand as the pinnacle in Elton's career.

If there was ever an album that defined the seventies, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" has got to be one of them. It is also the album that comes closest to being what Elton was about in his grandest. Extravagant, over-the-top, melodic and brash, this double album is probably how many from the period would describe both the album and the performer. As such, it redefined music and super stardom, and is a classic.

Stylistically, the 1973 version of Elton John and Bernie Taupin were now fearless. They were (to quote a line that eventually became part of "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy") turning them out thick and fast. There was the beautiful, melodic piano work on the title track and "Candle In The Wind," the hard rocking "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" and "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting," the western looking "Social Disease" and the melodrama in "I've seen that movie too" and "Harmony." Seventeen near flawless songs over two albums, and that was following the breakthrough of "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" and the number one "Crocodile Rock" from earlier that same year.

It wasn't just the seeming effortlessness to Elton and Bernie's prolific pace that was so attractive, it was the extravagance. Elton's reputation as a showman had already become the stuff of legend, and in the feverish time of the seventies, he allowed that into the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" artowrk. The original album was a thing of ornate beauty, a triple-fold gate sleeve that expanded out to show Elton stepping into a magic kingdom in ruby red platform shoes. The inner-sleeves were decorated with illustrations for each lyric and the band photos. It was everything you wanted in an album at the time...the full experience. Something you really don't get from too many performers these days. (And better reproduced in the Deluxe "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.")

As such, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is as good as gold. I know it is a cliche, but they just don't make 'em like this anymore.

This is one of my favorite Elton John albums. I had it on vinyl when it first came out (was that yesterday?) and bought it recently as a CD because of technology.

Elton John has enriched us all with his incredible artistry. He remains a prolific writer and he sings with all his heart. This double LP album entitled Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, here on one CD, shows us just a glimpse of Elton's great artistry in rock, reggae and "lighter" music as well.

The CD starts with one of Elton's greatest masterpieces entitled "Funeral For A Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)." Elton's piano and the work of his band make a smashing musical intro to a song about a love gone bad. Elton displays his raw emotion on this track as he sings about how "love lies bleeding in (his) hands."

The CD track set remains incredibly strong with "Candle In The Wind" and "Bennie And The Jets." "Candle In The Wind" explores how people can be misunderstood and abused and it uses Marilyn Monroe as an example. "Candle In The Wind" also features Elton's piano playing to reflect the sensitivity of the song. In addition, "Bennie And The Jets" paints a portrait of a fictional female rock star and her band. The rock beat on "Bennie And The Jets" is strong, solid and awesome.

The title track actually comes fourth on the set: "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" allows Elton to sing of a supposedly beautiful and luxurious lifestyle that he realizes is not as special as he thought it would be. The use of the image of the yellow brick road to a better life from The Wizard Of Oz works well; and we see, just like Dorothy concluded, that there's no place like home.

If you REALLY want to hear Elton at his most versatile, listen to "This Song Has No Title." Elton plays farfisa organ, electric piano, mellotron AND piano!!! This number shines like pure gold and the mixing reflects excellent judgment. The melody of this song is wonderful.

On "Jamaica $erk-Off" Elton and the band turn out an excellent reggae tune that beckons to you to love it; Elton sings his praises for the island of Jamaica and Prince Rhino's "vocal interjections" rule!

Other gems on this CD include the stunningly beautiful "I've Seen That Movie Too;" for this song Elton sings of how he won't let himself be fooled by a woman who doesn't truly love him. The piano and percussion work wonders in the arrangement; and Del Newman's orchestral arrangement stuns you with its beauty. "Sweet Painted Lady" tells the story of a woman who "rents by the hour" as she "satisfies" the sailors in the port; Elton sings this with a type of sensitivity that I rarely experience. Del Newman once again gives "Sweet Painted Lady" a gorgeous orchestral arrangement. Excellent!!!

"All The Girls Love Alice" lets Elton sing about a young lady who enjoys pleasing some of the other girls in town; however the ending is most definitely glum. The musical arrangement shifts back and forth between a hard rockin' song and a type of love ballad with a much slower tempo and great key changes--and this impresses me greatly.

Of course, there's that Elton John classic number, "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting." This number showcases the youthful rebellion young people experience when they are starting their own lives separate from their parents. I can just envision all these young people marching and dancing through the streets chanting this anthem as they shake their fists in the air!

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. "Harmony," the last track on this CD, moves you with its sensitivity; and Elton delivers this with great panache. An excellent number to close the track set!

The liner notes feature an awesome essay by John Tobler; and you get all the lyrics and song credits. The beautiful art work enhances the liner notes as well.

Elton John is a living legend. Long after most "celebrities" are dead and forgotten, Elton John will remain in our hearts and minds because of his incredible music and his legendary performances. Thank goodness Elton has shared his work with us; and, if we're lucky, Elton will be performing for many more years to come.

There may be a pretty good reason why 80's rock bands revives old good songs, and pretty much I can say Poison delivers an impressive performance into doing it. The songs "I Never Cry, Just What I needed, Dead Flowers, Little Willy and Were an American Band" are among the best. The rest were also nicely performed but somehow, not the best selection of songs to be revived. If you're a POISON fan, this CD is recommended.

Poison is one of my favorite band to come out of the 80's.

When i heard they had a new album out i knew i just had to get it and i wasn't let down at all as it's a good album.

"Little Willy"
This song was originally done by Sweet. This song shows off the glam side of Poison very well and is a nice cover song.

"Suffragette City"
This song was originally done by David Bowie. Poison's version of the song is just as good as the original that I remember. The chorus leaps out at you, and C.C. Deville's guitar playing gives this classic a new twist.

"I Never Cry"
This song was originally done by Alice Cooper. I had always loved the Alice Cooper classic. Bret Michaels delivers a stunning performance that does the original justice. Also the guitar solo is truly amazing although it's a bit short.

"I Need To Know"
This song was originally done by Tom Petty. The peppy groove on this song really gets things moving with C.C. Deville's guitar changes, and Rikki Rocket's cool drum playing.

"Can't You See?"
This song was originally done by The Marshall Tucker Band. Bret sings with passion and conviction, Poison really make this song their own. The melodic guitar changes in this tune are very well done.

"What I Like About You"
This song was originally done by The Romantics. I had the chance to see them perform this song live and it's just as good live as on the album. It's a fun song and fits well with the type of music that Poison does.

"Dead Flowers"
This song was originally done by The Rolling Stones. This song is a fine cover and I like this version a bit better. It has fine guitar playing throughout.

"Just What I Needed"
This song was originally done by The Cars. Poison does the song well but nothing can really touch the original classic hit.

"Rock `N Roll All Night"
This song was originally done by KISS. Let me tell you there's a reason you'll never hear Poison play this song in concert. This has got to be the worst cover song ever! I thought nothing could have been worse that Aerosmith's cover of the Spider-Man them song well I found a song worse and this is it. If you're gonna cover this song please cover the original and not the live version, maybe poison felt that the original version was too hard to play. They even changed some of the lyrics also a no no. avoid this song at all costs.

"Squeeze Box"
This song was originally done by The Who. I like poison's version better than The Who's version. I'm not really sure what makes it better maybe it's that the song sound like it could have been a Poison song.

"You Don't Mess Around With Jim"
This song was originally done by Jim Croce. I really like the original version a lot but I find the Poison version to be a bit better. This version does the original song justice improving on an already great classic song.

"Your Mama Don't Dance"
This song was originally done by Loggins and Messina. Poison gives this song a new pop twist. They know how to have a good time and it shows in this song. This version passes the original in every way. This is a great song that they play in all their shows and the crowd really like it, I know I did when I saw then in concert. They had the whole place jumpin' with this song.

"We're An American Band"
This song was originally done by Grand Funk Railroad. Poison decided to end the CD with a song that sums up what they're all about. This is a great version of the classic song and is a great way to close out the album.

I am a big fan of classic rock and this album does classic rock justice except for 1 song that I will not mention here.

This is a fun album by a fun band, so if you like fun rock music or if you're a fan of Poison then this album is for you.

If you get the chance to see Poison live then I suggest you go if you can as you will have a fun time at their show also.

If you're a die hard POISON fan, then add a star. If not, then you'll probably downgrade this by at least 2 stars.

I suspect that the people who say they listen to POISON albums for the music are like the ones who claim they read PLAYBOY Magazine for the articles. POISON was like a frat-party version of MOTLEY CRUE (or maybe MOTLEY CRUE were a tough backstreet-kid version of POISON). In any case, MOTLEY CRUE were dangerous and thrilling, while POSION was fun ... and they still are.

Here's a collection of songs that POISON performs in concert. Like nearly every other album they've released, it's just party music. THE KINKS said 'it's only jukebox music', and THE ROLLING STONES said 'it's only rock and roll ... but I like it.'

POISON was a lot like 1970's KISS re-done for the 1980's. KISS had sci-fi suits and face-paint, POISON had outrageous hair and androgyny. Both were slammed by critics, but won legions of fans who could care less what snooty idiots at 'Rolling Stone' or other magazines thought. Most of the critics are gone and forgotten, but the bands (POISON, KISS, and MOTLEY CRUE for that matter) are still filling venues and selling music.

The best cuts are the glam/punk & trash-rock songs:

* Little Willy (originally performed by Sweet)
* Suffragette City (originally performed by David Bowie)
* I Never Cry (originally performed by Alice Cooper)
* What I Like About You (originally performed by The Romantics)
* Just What I Needed (originally performed by The Cars)
* You Don't Mess Around With Jim (originally performed by Jim Croce)

The others are a mixed bag. 'I Need to Know' (originally performed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) lacks the nuances that made it a favorite song for fans. the KISS song 'Rock and Roll All Night - (and party every day)' falls a bit short on this CD -- works OK in concert though.

'Dead Flowers' (originally performed by The Rolling Stones) is a total flop here. If anyone needs to cover a STONES' song from the late 1960's or early 1970's, they either need to call on Johnny Winter (listen to his versions of Jumping Jack Flash) , or get Keith Richards to play the guitar parts, it seems.

On CD, 'We're An American Band' lacks the urgency and punch that have sustained the original version, but again, it works well in concert.

So put this in your CD, MP3 or iTunes player, and head on up to Sturgis in August -- ain't nothin' but a good time.

This is a simply terrific CD by a terrific band! They have been rocking for over 20 years now and show no signs of slowing down, thank God! Poison is one of the few(only?)bands to survive Grunge Rock's hair band massacre of the early 90's. Yes, this isn't original material, but it's extremely WELL DONE cover material and I highly recommend it!

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, such as "Killer Queen" and "You're My Best Friend". The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

This CD was my first exposure to Queen. As is evident on this album, this band is absolutely overflowing with talent. Freddie Mercury is a genius, singing his heart out on every single one of these tracks. It's hard to pick and choose, but I would have to say that the standout tracks for me are:

"Somebody to Love": A huge, sprawling song with absolutely mesmorizing vocals from Freddie Mercury and amazing harmonies.
"Fat Bottom Girls": A classic hard rock tune with gorgeous harmonies and great guitar lines.
"You're My Best Friend": A smooth, cool, beautiful, and underrated love song.
"Seven Seas of Rhye": I love the piano on this song, and the classic hard rock feel.
"Don't Stop Me Now": A classic adrenaline-rush of a song.

I love this CD. You should get it if you like Queen. It's very cohesive. And if you don't really know Queen that well, it's a great sampler of their music. There is one problem. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is my favorite Queen song, and its absence on this album irks me quite a bit. That being said, I would download it individually before I would actually buy another album with it.

I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of England's pride and joy's and one of Britain's favorite sons, Q-U-E-E-N! "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" was originally released in 1992 on Compact Disc on the Hollywood Records label which is distributed by Elektra Entertainment, a division of Warner Communications Inc. This review is Part 2 of 2. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

QUEEN will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most legendary all-time greatest sacred classic anthems ever. QUEEN will also be remembered for delivering one of Rock's most flamboyant and charismatic lead singer's / frontmen ever. Of course I'm speaking of the late great Farrokh Bulsara, also known the world over as Freddie Mercury. When Mercury met up and joined forces with rhythm and lead guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor, the stage was set and QUEEN would set out to conquer the world. QUENN would write and record many great albums and hit songs throughout the band's whole entire career to highly critically acclaim. Like volume I, "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" would be the result of the many great hit songs that QUEEN would record throughout their entire career. Also like volume I, the album, "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" would also serve as proof, of one of the many great contributions, accomplishments and achievements that QUEEN would give to Rock n' Roll. Also without a doubt, in my opinion, like volume I, "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" also stands as a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of four extremely talented individuals. "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of QUEEN to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. "QUEEN - GREATEST HITS - VOLUME II" from 1992 picks up right where VOLUME I left off and begins with the forever slow blistering QUEEN trademark Rock anthem that could be heard in stadiums during sports events the world over, "We Will Rock You," this slow Rocker will then develop into the beautifully slow hard Rock anthem "We Are The Champions," the merciless killer Rocker "Another One Bites The Dust," the forever Opera hard Rocker "Killer Queen," one of the most beautiful slow Rock anthems ever, "Somebody To Love," the hard Rock anthem for beautiful overweight women the world over, "Fat Bottom Girls," the amazing Opera Rock anthem "Bicycle Race," the forever beautifully slow QUEEN trademark Rock anthem "You're My Best Friend," the forever 50's like Rock anthem that would have made ELVIS PRESLEY proud, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," (READY FREDDIE!) the breathtaking a*s kicking hard Rocker "Now I'm Here," the mysterious groundbreaking special effects Rock anthem with an incredible falsetto voice arrangement by Freddie Mercury, "Play The Game," the fantastc killer hard Rocker "Seven Seas Of Rhye," the forever bass pumping synthesized Rocker "Body Language," the beautifully slow electric acoustic Rocker "Save Me," the fast paced and energetic hard Rocker "Don't Stop Me Now," the incredible Opera Rocker "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" and the forever danceable synthesized Rocker "I Want To Break Free." Again, like VOLUME I, may I also add that the blistering lead vocals and breathtaking falsetto vocal arrangements by Freddie Mercury was PERFECT and on the mark while laying down the tracks for all of these legendary hit songs. I would also like to commend Brian May for his merciless guitar riffs and licks throughout all of the recordings of these legendary hit songs. I would also like to commend QUEEN'S legendary rhythm section comprising of bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor. Their combined perfect harmony sound effort contributed in elevating both Freddie Mercury's blistering lead vocals and Brian May's merciless guitar arrangements to another level unimagined by anyone.

Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard QUEEN fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of QUEEN, along with VOLUME I, this is not a bad compilation album or two volume album collection to start off with. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal QUEEN music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you ever get a chance, buy both volume albums, you'll be happy and satisfied that you did.

Like VOLUME I, I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album(s) to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. Without a doubt, this legendary treasure album(s) has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceles gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, Freddie Mercury's untimely death on 24 November 1991 would close the book on one of Rock's greatest chapters and one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. OR SO IT SEEMED. The QUEEN legend and legacy is far from being over. As we speak, QUEEN has been touring with former FREE'S, BAD COMPANY'S and THE FIRM'S lead singer and frontman Paul Rodgers to highly critically acclaim. In my opinion, despite Freddie Mercury being irreplaceable, QUEEN'S only chance of carrying on with someone else that is close to Freddie Mercury's talent is with none other than George Michael. When I heard George Michael sing with QUEEN on stage at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, Michael is the only lead singer and frontman alive today that is capable of filling in the empty shoes left vacant by the late great Freddie Mercury. I'm really surprised that QUEEN didn't snatch up George Michael right away. I HOPE QUEEN IS READING THIS! As years have gone by, the contributions, accomplishments and achievements that QUEEN has made throughout Rock n' Roll history speaks for itself. In 2001, QUEEN would meet their date with destiny by receiving the highest ultimate honor possible, by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. With this in mind, QUEEN will forever leave their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. There will also be new stories in the QUEEN legend and legacy that will still need to be told and written. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and glued to your computer and read further more about it at a later date in the near future. Although it lacks a few of their best songs, Queen's "Greatest Hits" is a nice starting point for anyone who remembers the band from their glory days and for those just beginning this royal rock journey. I think that few people would argue the point that Freddie Mercury truly had one of the best voices around. He could meld it to any of a number of genres of music and that's well-evidenced on this album. From the anthemic "We Will Rock You" to the rockabilly "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," to the groovy, urban stylings of "Another One Bites The Dust," Mercury and the boys constantly crossed genre lines.

Highlights including those previously mentioned are "I Want To Break Free," "Save Me", "Killer Queen," "Somebody To Love," and the wonderfully strange "Body Language." My personal favorite is "Fat-Bottomed Girls."

Fans of arena rock bands like Styx and Foreigner will surely enjoy Queen, although Queen is on an entirely different level than those bands. They are classic rock royalty and I highly recommend you snag "Classic Queen" to get a more complete understanding of Queen's broad-reaching style of music.

Jeff Lynne has got to be one of the most underrated pop geniuses of the seventies and eighties. While the world of prog-rockers was bombasting themselves with side-long double album extravaganzas (Yes, I am talking about Yes...), Jeff Lynne and his mates in Electric Light Orchestra decided that "I Am The Walrus" and "Good Vibrations" were all the inspiration they needed.

The end result is a body of work that sounds even better to these aging ears than they did in 1975. From their orchestral rave-up on Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" to the "bama-lama-lama" chorus on the rockabilly "Rock and Roll Is King," Lynne mastered styles effortlessly for three decades. (Even if "Zoom" is not represented here.) Despite the fact that ELO had pretty much abandoned the "orchestra" part of their name by "Time," the 'pocket-symphony' concept stayed with them till the last hit on this CD, "Calling America." Songs like "Rock and Roll Is King" hint at the production chops Lynne would eventually bring to the likes of Tom Petty, Travelling Wilburys, George Harrison and Dave Edmunds.

I chose this "Essential ELO" CD to be in my collection over "All Over The World" primarily because this set includes "Do Ya." "All Over The World" does have a few choice classic-rock cuts ("Ma Ma Belle" and "The Diary Of Horace Wimp" to name two), but if you're looking to get the sugar coated buzz of the 70's singles, this is the collection to own. My rating is held to four stars because of ommissions like "Four Little Diamonds," "10538 Overture" or "Showdown." (This should have been a double set, ala "Strange Magic.") Now that all the albums are back out in pristine remasters, you can pick and choose the classic ELO to fit your whims.

After flirting with heavy guitar rock ("The Man Who Sold the World") and lighter pop ("Hunky Dory"), Bowie found middle ground on Ziggy Stardust. The creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona would live on well after Bowie shed the alien skin, marking the first rock concept album by a sexually ambiguous, artistically bent musician who confounded critics at every turn. Now I do like this. But it is not my favorite David Bowie album. Too many so-so songs ("Star"; "Hang Onto Yourself"; "Five Years"); too much campy over-orchestration ("Rock and Roll Suicide"), one total bomb ("It Ain't Easy") - he even recycles the "Sweet Jane" riff on "Starman", which is otherwise very good. Still, it's Ziggy Stardust, man! You know? It's not like there aren't all kinds of excellent songs on this album, because there are a truckload! You know "Moonage Daydream", right? What a guitar solo! And you know "Ziggy Stardust", I assume! The lyrics! The riff! And, again, the guitar solo! "Starman" is pretty good too, though I think Bowie could've written his own riff rather than take one of Lou Reed's. Been spending too much time around Jimmy Page, have you? Continuing on, "Suffragette City" may not be terribly insightful, but it's a Stonesy rocker with a powerful horn section, so I like it. Another two songs I like that you don't often hear too much of are the cathartic "Soul Love" and the groupie-themed rocker "Lady Stardust". Oh yeah, and then there's the concept. The bisexual androgynous alien coming down from space to save everybody's life. It's a bit clunky, but like Tommy I find Ziggy Stardust is more about the music than the concept. And the music's good!

Bowie was the genius of the 70's.

I love David Bowie and could listen to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" over-and-over. The poetics of Bowie's lyrics and the phenomenal guitar riffs hold this album together and are what makes it a classic, must have album. This is Bowie at his height of fame and truly captures Bowie's glam rock side of the late 1970s. I could not choose a favorite song from this album because, to me, each song builds off of one another like a good concept album should. From the opening of "Five Years" right to the end "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" shows the various levels of Bowie's artistic ability.
This is a must have for any serious collection of Bowie and for anyone interested in good, wholesome rock showcasing one of the best artists of the 1970s.

Wow, rock n roll can be raw, catchy, dramatic, and quite sophisticated. So what is the need for new bands? Whenever people talk about Bowie they tend to speak in terms of him paving the way for a lot of today's music. Although that is true I don't think any new rock band has come close to this album. It's too painful for some people to look at the 1970's for what it truly was: the golden age of Rock N Roll, an age that younger people like myself missed out on and only live through their C.D. collection. It is much more comforting to call the 1970's the springboard for modern rock and ignore the fact that modern rock is passionless, corporate, crap.
This album is basically the essence of rock n roll. The songs are short, catchy, and upbeat. These are all qualities that most so called "modern rock" bands avoid like the plague although it is what rock music has always truly been about. Ziggy Stardust is from an era when quality was just plain expected in an album. You couldn't release an album with 10 crapped out songs and 1 decent single like today's bands (by the way music downloading and IPODs are not helping this problem).
If you love great rock music (real rock music) please do yourself a favor and buy Ziggy Stardust and give your Track Skip button a long deserved rest.

Elton John has always fancied himself a big-theme album artist, but because even his finest albums are spotty, his best moments, with few exceptions, have been singles. "Buh-Buh-Buh-Bennie and the Jets!" What else do you need to know? This Greatest Hits collection was originally released in 1974, and as an album, it's friggin incredible. Track to track to track, perfectly solid. You don't need any of the newer bullcrap collections of Elton John's work. This is THE ONE. Just buy it already, it's CHEAP! You won't regret it.

Hey, I'm a rocker, too - I like me some Stones, some AC/DC, some Aerosmith, some Zeppelin, some Sab, some Guns n' Roses, some Who, some Hendrix and some Cream. But you know, you gotta mellow out sometimes, and that's why I listen to Elton. (Hell, even Axl Rose admitted to being a big fan of his).

Now my man Reg Dwight's been taking a lot of abuse lately, mainly because he's gay (which has got to be the stupidest reason I can think of to criticize a musician). If you're looking to diss the guy just because of that, take it up with him. But I warn you - he's rich. He's probably got ninja bodyguards.

All joking aside, EJ rules. He's capable of writing the perfect pop song, and hey, that piano! He's awesome with piano! Gotta love his voice, too. In other words, very talented man. I'm not a big fan of Bernie Taupin, but hey, Elton's great. This is not the perfect compilation of his work - I'd have liked to see some songs from Madman Across the Water (like the hits Tiny Dancer and Levon), and I don't like Bennie and the Jets. Song just bugs me. Good news is, that's the only bad song here: this has my favorite all-time EJ song (Crocodile Rock, which is the ultimate feel-good tune - come on, how can you NOT like it? It's not possible! I mean, I have heard one person criticize it, but he had the rough intelligence of a cinderblock), as well as several other great ones, mostly ballads like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Your Song (simply the perfect pop song), Candle in the Wind, Daniel, Rocket Man, and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me. Then there are the cool stylistic experiments like the gospelly Border Song (Holy Moses) (off his self-titled second, which I recommend - it's the one with Your Song on it), and the New Orleans-sounding Honky Cat. And who says EJ can't rock? Throw on Saturday Night's All Right (for Fighting) and see if you still think that way.

A couple of Elton's studio LP's are really good too - I'd go with self-titled, Madman Across the Water and Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. Those just starting out with him should start her.e

For a brief, shining run between 1970 and 1974, Elton John blazed into the rock universe with impeccable songs by Bernie Taupin and himself, an outlandish stage show and a string of albums helped redefine expectations of superstar product. His early success was so heady that MCA Records threw this quickie greatest hits on the public in the 1974 holiday season...when I received it as a Christmas gift with a new GE stereo player from my parents. This may be one of the albums that codified my tastes in music, along with "With the Beatles," "School's Out," "Can't Buy A Thrill" and "My Aim Is True."

But in high school circa the early 70's, it was all about Elton. He had then (and still does) a stylistic range that other musicians would sell their souls for, be it the influence of country ("Border Song"), soul ("Bennie and the Jets"), old fashion radio tunes ("Crocodile Rock"), love songs ("Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me") and hard rock (the blistering "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"). Elton's brashness knew no bounds in those days, be it the flamboyant stage gear to the over the top album package that went with "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," which carried into his music. He was willing to try anything, and his hunger for stardom drove his creativity.

The results of that drive are here in this perfect time capsule about how the seventies were most certainly NOT a dark time for music. That Sir Elton is still releasing albums ("The Captain and the Kid") of strong new material and not taking the easy road of recording a sappy album of standards (I'm looking at you, Rod Stewart) speaks to the genius of Elton and Bernie. While he may have slowed down creatively after "Rock of the Westies" and further best ofs have been issued (like his 60th birthday Rocket Man: Number Ones (Eco-Friendly Packaging)"), this single disc consolidates all that was great about Elton while his career was still hot and hungry.

I give you one of England's pride and joy's and one of the British's most favorite sons, M-R. E-L-T-O-N J-O-H-N! "ELTON JOHN'S GREATEST HITS" was originally released in 1974 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the MCA Records, Inc. label. This legendary compilation album would soon be released on Cassette in the mid 70's. This legendary compilation album would see its very first print issue on Compact disc in the mid to late 80's. This legendary greatest hits album would be re-released in 1994 in a Limited Edition 24 KT Gold Compact Disc which is manufatured by DCC Compact Classics. PLEASE NOTE: I will be writing reviews on all three volumes of the original ELTON JOHN'S "GREATEST HITS" compilation albums. This very first original "GREATEST HITS" compilation album is Part 1 of 3. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the legendary artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible. However, you might want to research further into the many other ELTON JOHN'S greatest hits compilation albums before you decide on which compilation album is right for your musical needs and tastes. Whichever way you may choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal ELTON JOHN music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you get a chance, buy this album. As AFI rode onto mainstream radio playlists with their gleaming major label debut, Sing the Sorrow, the rumble of disenchanted fans nearly drowned out that of their dark-hued music. "There's a lot more attention to detail on this record," Jade recalls. "We spent a long time writing it. We refused to rush ourselves. We took our time not just on every song but on each guitar part, each vocal, each bass line. We definitely didn't rush into the studio."

The fruit of this labor is a record that Davey Havok is confident "should break us out of any preconceived genres." I am a fan of an album that can tell a story from beginning to end. I think this album does that. I listen to something from this album almost every day. I have it on my shuffle while I run. It always makes me smile and pick up the pace a little. I think, "I wonder what the person on the treadmill next to me is listening to; because, it can't compare to this." I just love each song more and more everytime I hear it.
I bought this and Sing the Sorrow at the same time. I do have to say; I think Sing the Sorrow has more angst/ possibly emotion but this album has more of a cohesive story.
I think they are one of the best bands of the current music scene. There are alot of duds out there!

By listening to this album alone, one would never image that AFI was once a respecable hXc punk band. Now AFI is listed with the likes of "A Panic at the Disco" and "My Chemical Romance". Where is the thrashing guitar? What happened to the in your face vocals? From a man that lists Ian Mackaye as a vocal influence, the garbage vocals on this album could not hold a light to Minor Threat. Many reviewers on this site call the transformation which AFI has undergone progression, but I think a better suited label would be change. Change from dominant thrashing guitar and heartfelt vocals (with amazing Nick 13 backup) to watered down screamo anthems. But I guess bending over backwards pays the bills.

From the look of it, AFI has taken another wise step into making their major label sophomore release a sure success! Every song has a beat of its own and a meaning that transcends every corner of rock music! My favorite song in the albums is "The Missing Frame," seconded by "Love like Winter." Please take time to listen closely to this band and their great effort, wait, did I say effort? More like a masterpiece!

No, this album is by no means like anything else you've heard by them, but if you are a true AFI fan you are going to know that already. None of their albums have ever sounded the same. They grow between each record. The earlier hardcore punk kids have now evolved into something that you just cant classify. The only thing you can do is sit back and listen. The hard work that went into this cd is clear and it was well worth the three year wait between STS and DU. Davey blows us away again with his powerful voice and lyrics and Hunter, Jade, and Adam are right there with him pounding unforgettable music through our veins.

Prelude is a great opener with a heart pounding drumbeat and amazing guitar. Davey's voice is commanding and soft at the same time, a real preview for what is to come for the rest of the album.

Kill Caustic is one of the two hardest songs and probably the one closets to resembling anything from Black Sails on backward.

Miss Murder was the single we waited for and it was amazing when it came out. Its the way the close their shows and it really is just a good fun song. Not that the lyrics arent deep, but the music will cause you to bop your head despite what the words are.

Summer Shudder should have been the third single but I think they have decided to go with The Missing Frame. Melodic with a little bit of violin. Great song.

The Interview was the first song on the cd to send chills down my spine. Davey's voice is amazing here and the lyrics are beautiful. Its the slower song on the cd and its one of my favorites. "Hold me you may drop me tomorrow' is an amazing line and the emotion you hear in Davey's voice makes it all the better.

Love Like Winter is catchy and its fun and just a good song that really shows where some of their influences come from.

Affliction is the second hard hitting song on the cd and its coupled with hard hitting music and melodic background vocals. Nice.

The Missing Frame was the song they chose as single number three and it definitely has the potential for airplay. Its one of the longest songs on the cd, but its not overdone.

Kiss and Control... God, its my favorite one. This was the one I wanted as a single because as an AFI fan, its the videos that make a lot of this so much fun and this would have made an amazing video. Its dark and rough and everything you'd want in a song. The guitar is amazing and the tiny speaking part towards the end is hard hitting and powerful.

Killing Lights is a fun little song, very bouncy.

37MM is amazing, very Depeche Mode. I loved it upon first listen and love it still.

Endlessly She Said was the only song on the Cd to make me cry. The raw emotion in Davey's voice, the music, all of it is so heartbreaking and at the same time very angry. An amazing song and a great way to end the cd.

Expirimentation can make or break a band. For some, trying new things seems to interfere with the songwriting process, showing new sounds for the band but forgettable songs. In each release, AFI have consistently managed to bring new sounds and elements into the equation while retaining excellent songwriting and performances. All the while never quite being able to put them in the nice, neat little boxes called "genres".

Decemberunderground may be the bands finest example of this. I don't prefer it to any other AFI record, but it offers something the others don't, just as the others off something this doesn't. AFI truly get it by bringing new elements to keep things fresh but keeping the melodies, the mood, the songs, and the emotion and not settling for less than they've done before.

"Prelude 12/21" is the perfect opener. It's not as chant oriented as past openers, but is a definite sign of things to come with the record. The band brings several electronic elements into their songs, including the single "Love Like Winter" and "Summer Shudder". The band show new expirimentation in their songwriting on tracks like "37mm" (possibly my favorite song off the album) and "The Interview".

There's something here for the fan of AFI's older material, as well. "Affliction" and "Kill Caustic" remind one of their 1997 album, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes without sounding redundant, and "Endlessly, She Said" could fit nicely on any of their post-Shut Your Mouth... albums.

"Summer Shudder" and "37mm" are easily my favorites. Tons and tons of layers, very personal lyrics, all come together with the songs themselves to create something very special that you don't come across all too often. Although don't get me wrong, EVERY song on here is worth listening to, and not a weak moment that I can think of.

Decemberunderground is excellent in that you fall in love with it and are happy with it, but the bands constant reinvention with new sounds, elements, and concepts always makes you want more and keeps you guessing as to what they'll do next.

Ignore the "Emo" and "Scene" bull that seems to follow this band around. I've been a fan since 2000, AFI didn't go "scene", the scene caught onto them. Stop caring about the trends, stop caring about their "look", and just listen.

This is the box set for those ready to dive feet-first into the back-catalog of queen. After many years of being in the mainstream through "Best-of" compilations, this collection offers fans (old and new) something compelling. The packaging is a solid attempt to capture the days of Vynal two-fold packaging and included lyrics. All said, a great value and essential to any classic rock library.

Great boxed set. Dark Blue velvet box with logo. "nice" Each CD is in an carboard replica jacket of it's album. It would've been a perfect set if the CD's were in an hard case instead of cardboard.
8 CD's and a companion booklet with all the lyrics and some pictures.
If you like Queen's music this is a great collection. I love it.

Any true Queen fan knows that these first eight albums represent the epitome of one of the greatest rock bands of the 1970s. The remastered albums are of excellent sound quality, and the sleeves are cardboard replicas of the original album covers. Queen II, Night at the Opera, Day at the Races, News of the World, and Jazz are accurately reproduced in their original gatefold format. Jazz even includes a miniature reproduction of the original notorious poster of nude female bicycle racers! The accompanying booklet has all the original lyrics, as well as some great photos. All of this is beautifully packaged in a blue velvet covered box. Although not inexpensive, you get a lot for your money, musically and otherwise. For anyone who loves Queen, this set is a must!

An absolutely brilliant collection. After "The Game", Queens music became more erratic and eccentric. This is the real meat and bones of the Queen cds. Hell, my childhood lies in this box set! The Album re-creations are brilliant, and the inner sleeves in each one protects the cds from dislodging. They sound incredible and at some of the prices i see this being sold by used/other sellers its an absolute bargain! Even the $95 that amazon sells it new as is a bargain considering this is 8 cds. work it out. Not to be missed on any level.
