5 out of 5 stars no doubt this is a masterpiece: buy it !.......2004-07-07

If I could I would have given 6 stars.
No doubt 1960 was the best Everly year for both music quality and quantity.Would you buy only one Everly cd this is the one to buy.All tracks are extremely impressive, nothing to reject, many songs came from the Bryant and they were especialy writing songs for Don and Phil, the best combination.
The Nashville sound is as pure as the music and the voices.
It' s clear: there will never be an other country rock album reaching this level of quality.

"Sleepless nights" is an extreme exemple of the perfect combination of 2 voices,Cathy's clown was building the new standard of country music for the years to come, Nashville blues showed the Everlys were good at blues also...and I could say such things about each title.
But most of all, many golden titles from these 2 albums were missing a lot in previous PARTIAL re issues. If you find you have already some of these songs on other cds, you can still buy this CD because songs like "just in case" (drums are incredible !) or "I want you to know" (and many others) can only be found here.
I CONFIRM DON'T LOSE ANY TIME, BUY IT WHILE YOU CAN !( I purchased 3 of them as I had waited 40 years before...)
I am now hoping Warner will do the same job for all original LPs especialy "Beat and soul"
      Everly yours

5 out of 5 stars Landmark Recordings .......2004-02-05

These two albums were recorded by the Everly's shortly after their move to Warner from Cadence Records in 1960. With their streak of late 50's hits over, they went into the studio and cut these in '60 and '61.

The sound quality on this CD is incredible, the musicianship simply dripping with effortlessness and tastefulness. Great songs, great arrangements. Most of these never went on to surpass their earlier hits, but what they lack in hooks they make up for in exuberance and quality.

I was an Every fan for years, listening almost strictly to their 50's catalogue - but I return to these albums more than any other. The sound here is a little more electric, but I believe "It's Everly Time" to be the Everly's best work.

I really hope albums like this are appreciated in the future - I'm glad to see it in print.

5 out of 5 stars Get it while you can.......2003-09-11

If one needs any more convincing that the beginning of the Everly's tenure at Warner Brothers was every bit as brilliant as their time at Cadence, this CD should set you straight. All their 1960 recordings are here, and it is impressive. It includes the two albums that were released that year, plus the singles and several alternate takes and songs that were recorded but unreleased at that tiem. All are wonderfully remastered in pristine stereo, and the choice of songs and studio musicians (which includes the great Chet Atkins) is absolutely the best. Man these Nashville cats know how to play, and what a pleasure it is to listen to Chet Atkins absolutely gorgeous licks; his guitar playing alone is worth the price of admission. It goes without saying that the singing, well, just doesn't get any better than this, in ANY era.

These are classic, timeless recordings, really. If their were any justice in this world, this CD would be a catalog item that would sell several hundred thousand copies a year, like Abbey Road or Revolver. As it is, you better get this while you can, because it's only available as a limited supply import. Even if you've got the Everly Brothers boxed set, you need this if you appreciate just how good these guys were. This collection from 1960 catches the Everly Brothers at their peak...period.

5 out of 5 stars Kentucky duo at the peak of their career.......2002-09-04

The Everly brothers had several hits on the Cadence label, notably Bye bye love and All I have to do is dream, before signing to Warners in 1960. They started very successfully and this album presents their first two albums for Warners, plus other tracks recorded then, but not necessarily released then. Every track here was recorded between March and November of 1960, in the days when it didn't take long to record each song to the required quality standard.

The first album (It's Everly time) begins with So sad to watch good love go bad, one of their classic hits. Most of the other songs were written by the Bryants. One of these, Sleepless nights, is pure magic. I believe it to be, along with Love Hurts (see later), the best song they recorded that wasn't released as a single by them. It has since been covered by (among others) Emmylou Harris on her Pieces of the sky album, and by the Judds on their River of time album.

The second album (A date with the Everly Brothers - studio album, despite the title) includes Lucille, a cover of the Little Richard classic which they also had a hit with, and ends with Cathy's clown. Despite being the biggest hit they ever had, there are very few covers compared to some of their other hits. The most notable, by far, is Reba McEntire's country version, in which the words are adapted to take Cathy's view of the situation. The other important song here, Love Hurts, has been recorded by many artists in many different musical styles, and has been a pop hit for other artists, including Nazareth.

The bonus tracks include singles not released on either of the LP's - Ebony eyes, Walk right back and two versions of Temptation - and other tracks which remained in the vaults at the time, though all were eventually released except one of the versions of Temptation, available here for the first time. Actually, the rare version sounds like an inferior version of the famous version.

The tracks not specifically mentioned all fit the general Everly sound of the time, and it is these tracks that are the real reason to buy this. While none of them are outstanding, they are all very enjoyable.

Sleepless nights and the famous tracks can all be found on Walk Right Back: The Everly Brothers On Warner Brothers, 1960-1969, although if you're only interested in the early part of their sixties music, you might prefer this twofer anyway.
