5 out of 5 stars Great album, poor-sounding transcription.......2007-07-06

I love Ronstadt! What pipes! Great interpretations of great songs.

This album is responsible for seriously launching skating as an outdoor sport - the LA County beach bike path was empty one week, and jammed with skaters a week after this album was released. (Who says Americans aren't sheep?)

One of the poorest CD recordings I've heard. Don't know why.

5 out of 5 stars An Album Released In 1978 And Still Going Strong!!!.......2005-06-09

This is another excellent album from Ms. Ronstadt which was released in the wild, reckless days of my youth and sounds as fresh today as it did back then. My favourite track on this album would have to be the wistful "Mohammed's Radio and "White Rhythm And Blues "comes in as a close second. Once again guitarist Waddy Wachtel plays on this album and his guitar work is always a delight to hear. For those of you who ae still befuddled by the pronouciation of this guy's surname it is "Wok-Tell" as in the Chinese Kitchen Frypan!!!

4 out of 5 stars Linda Ronstadt's second megahit!.......2005-03-02

HEART LIKE A WHEEL was a #1 smash. HASTEN DOWN THE WIND never made it to the Top 20. This follow-up did, though. Memorable songs include the hits BACK IN THE U.S.A. and covers of The Miracles' OOH BABY BABY and Doris Troy's JUST ONE LOOK. Another memorable song is MOHAMMED'S RADIO,written and originally recorded by the late Warren Zevon,Linda Ronstadt's Asylum Records labelmate. The other songs are good.

4 out of 5 stars Sentimental favorite.......2005-01-04

This album is one of my two favorite Linda Ronstadt albums (the other being "Simple Dreams"), though I don't think it represents Ronstadt at her artistic zenith, overall. However, I do think this album contains one of Ronstadt's greatest performances.

The program is an artistic mix, and is a pretty smooth blend of rock, standards, ballads and country. The title song and "Just One Look" showcase Ronstadt as a rock singer; Ronstadt can rock with the best of them. "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" could easily fit in with the classic Nelson Riddle recordings. Ballads include "Ooh Baby Baby," "Love Me Tender," and "Blowing Away." They're all effective interpretations. The album's standout track, though, in my view, is Ronstadt's country-influenced performance of "White Rhythm and Blues." Ronstadt's interpretation of this song evokes such feeling that you know you're listening to a singer's singer at her peak.

5 out of 5 stars Brings Back Great Musical Memories.......2004-02-26

The very first rock concert I ever saw (at age 15) was Linda Ronstadt back in August of 1978.I still have the original ticket stub and reserve seats were only $9.50 (Boy, prices have changed!). I'll never forget watching this beautiful, petite, women (in short shorts & a way too small Boy Scout uniform) with a powerful voice singing songs from her then new album, "Living in the USA". To this day, that album remains as one of my favorites out of Ronstadt's vast and eclectic catalogue of music. How do you start to review this wonderful album, where she covers everyone from Chuck Berry to Elvis Costello? The CD begins with a real bang as Linda lets loose with Berry's rock n'roll, cross-country journey of "Living in USA". It's a really fun number and Ronstadt has a crack group of musicians backing her up. I especially love Don Grolnick's rollicking piano and Waddy Wachtel's searing guitar licks. Ronstadt is a master interpreter of songs and she does an amazing job on this album. I love the gentle way she handles Oscar Hammerstein's classic "When I Grow to Old to Dream". Or the sexy, sultriness she expounds in Smokey Robinson's "Ooh Baby". My personal favorites on this CD include J.D. Souther's "White Rhythm and Blues" and the late, Warren Zevon's "Mohammed's Radio". Over the years, Ronstadt covered many tunes from these two writers, but in this instance she really tops herself with putting so much emotion into her readings. This CD says so much about the pop/rock music of the 1970's, yet it is remains timeless in it's sheer perfection. This is just a wonderful album that I highly recommend!

3 out of 5 stars Don't Let Nobody Turn You Around!! Get This CD!!.......2003-11-14

So you got a copy of 1974-1978 and have played it maybe 50 billion times and you've just spun it again when an idea flashed into your little head: "I wonder if maybe this cat didn't cut some other good stuff once upon a time???" Well, let me answer that question succinctly: He Did! In fact, the years 1968-1973 were quite creative for Stevie Guitar; no less than eight albums worth of (mostly) top quality material. "Well", you think, "why don't I just buy Anthology or 1968-1973?" Great idea, except that you reach into your pocket and barely have ten dollars to your name. The Answer: Get Living in the USA, a very good budget compilation that covers the years 1968 thru 1973, and is filled with (mostly) excellent songs. The title track is a dragster-fueled, cheeseburger-and-fries ode to this great country of ours with great guitar figures and a fine harp solo. Vroom!! Vroom!! "Don't Let Nobody Turn You Around" is in fact the old civil rights tune from the March on Washington days, and boasts Steve's finest guitar solo of the entire set. Moving and inspirational, yet most quintessentially rocking!!! "Quicksilver Girl" is wonderfully atmospheric, and was used as the backdrop to the "getting high" scene in the movie The Big Chill. "Gangster of Love" is, of course, one of Steve Miller's many nicknames; the tune is a very fine, short, comic number that sounds like it were cut on the spur of the moment. But, without question, the most incandescent track on the whole set is "Your Saving Grace," a shimmering, shining jewel of a number concerning redemption and self-discovery, sung most wonderfully by drummer extraordinaire Tim Davis. Yeah, Baby!!! Unfortunately, there are a few cuts that are merely good, not great: "Joker" (I can't believe it was a number one single; what was America thinking???), "Loving Cup," and "Mary Lou". There are many songs on the early albums that could have taken their place: "Celebration Song," "Seasons," "Going to Mexico," "Overdrive" (with early SM crony Boz Scaggs), "Children of the Future," and "Brave New World." Also, since this is a budget compilation, the bare-bones, no liner notes packaging leaves a lot to be desired. Still, if you want some of Steve Miller's finest early work at a bargain-basement price, don't let nobody turn you around, get Living in the USA today!! It's truly big sound for little bucks!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to pre-"fly like/dreams" Steve Miller.......2001-03-31

Yeah I know, you couldn't swing a dead cat in the 70's without hitting a radio playing Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams ad nausem. But for those of us who appreciate Steve as a pretty darn creative musician this earlier stuff really shines. Living in the USA and Space Cowboy are just great rock anthems. Steve mellows out with Your Saving Grace and brings out the BAD in bad-girl Mary Lou. Great for old fans or new friends!

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.
