Wrongs righted.......2007-05-27

There have been compilations before of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, the band he formed after leaving John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but this latest one puts right most of the wrongs and omissions of those.
Everything you expect is here including Oh Well Parts 1 & 2 in its full 9 minute glory and without fading out in the middle, where you had to turn over the single, as previous collected versions had; and the previously unreleased US Version of Need Your Love So Bad, which is a superb extended six minute piece, with strings arranged by Mickey Baker (who played guitar on Little Willie John's original). Stop Messin' Round was on the flipside of Need Your Love So Bad, but it is here in the slighter shorter version used on the album Mr. Wonderful.
The towering magnificence of The Green Manalishi is also re-established by its inclusion. The compilation ends with a token track by Chicken Shack, because of Christine McVie's involvement with the band, and the then-recent hit remix of Albatross by Chris Coco, both of which I could have done without in this particular context, perhaps replaced by their first single, Rambling Pony/I Believe My Time Ain't Long.

Great alternate to John Mayall for '60's British Blues..........2007-05-05

Peter Green was the best replacement John Mayall could have found for Eric Clapton, and Green continues his emotional guitar playing style with his own group consisting of additional ex-Mayall sidemen Mick Fleetwood and John McVie.

If you are expecting something similar to the classic Fleetwood Mac of the '70's with Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie, then beware--this is totally different music, straight blues. Those three had not appeared in the lineup back when this album came out. The only other member besides the core three from Mayall's band is slide guitar expert Jeremy Spencer.

While Peter Green's vocals are competent in a blues context, I have never been too fond of Spencer's vocals, which appear on the slide guitar-heavy songs. Spencer is an unabashed Elmore James disciple and even does a fair job of mimicking some of the legendary bluesman's vocal nuances and his slide playing is good, but his voice sounds amateurish and boyish. Maybe he improved later on, but here I think Green should have assumed all the vocals.

Great discovery.......2005-11-10

Well, after you get to a certain age, you are more likely to buy old favorites than to find something new. I've always been a blues fan, but generally the blues I like are Delta blues by singers who are, or sound like, actual old Delta guys. I mean, I appreciate Eric Clapton and others for rediscovering and republicizing these great old songs. But I just don't connect with the British blues singers. And: I regard a number of Fleetwood Mac's songs as rock anthems, songs everybody should own. I was poking around on iTunes deciding which old Fleetwood Mac anthems I loved enough to buy for my iPod, and hadn't heard too many times already, and, of course, the way iTunes' search works, I could hardly miss Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. It's seldom that iTunes out-obscures Amazon, but here's one. Amazon (at least, as I write this) has no samples of this CD; go to iTunes and listen to some samples. You might actually like it well enough to buy the whole CD. Otherwise, I bet you'll find several cuts you can't do without: particularly, Moneymaker and Cold Black Night. And be sure to check out Tallahassee Lassie. Really outdoes Freddy Cannon.

in expression- without histrionics.It's just a truly amazing
corpus ,by someone who deserves the same esteem that Django,

Why five? Because you loved the man's touch and feel on the strings; because he sounded so good with soulful down-hearted blues on "Trying So Hard to Forget" and "Coming, I'm Coming"? Dig that slide he's teasing. Or kick it back on the porch with a "Kind Hearted Woman" by way of Mr. Robert Johnson.

And tell me how woeful and hurtin' Peter cries on "Jumping At Shadows"--who's in more pain, his song or his guitar? Listen to those peals of sorrow--the voice AND the tortured notes he's pulling off that Les Paul. You didn't feel the knife cut you that deep until you heard the end of his solo, did ya?

If grief could be made into work, he could sing the nails out of the wall, and don't forget the squeals and squawks he'd grind out on lead guitar. I heard "Same Old Blues" by Bonnie Bramlett; Peter would make the perfect duet. And lookee-here, Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign" is as menacing as the original. Those are Albert's signature licks, aren't they?

Shake it, shake it, with "Tribal Dance." It's spacy and it moves. And could that be a hint of a David Gilmore-like influence on "Time for Me To Go"?

Get this because you loved the early Fleetwood Mac. Buy it because you have a friend who loves to learn new guitar ideas from an old source. Keep it because you need it in your collection.

Much Better Than I Expected! Peter Does The Blues!.......2002-01-02

I bought this not knowing exactly what it was. I had hoped it would not be Peter doing the weird stuff that I had heard plagued some of his post-Fleetwood Mac solo records. I was not disappointed! This is a really great collection if you are just looking to recapture some of the old Bluesbreakers/Fleetwood Mac sound. Much of what is here would have sat comfortably next to any of the Fleetwood Mac era tracks.

In response to one of the other reviewers, if you had read the back cover notes you would not have been misled into thinking it's all from the Fleetwood Mac days - in any case I knew this couldn't all be from the Mac era since I didn't recognise most of the songs, and I know all of them from the box set. Actually, only Sandy Mary and Jumping at Shadows are definitely from the Fleetwood Mac lineup (from the Boston Tea Party concerts).

It is not clear exactly where some of the rest of the songs originate - the liner notes are no help at all although it is claimed that at least one track is from the Bluesbreakers era (but, no indication as to which one!).

Walkin' Down The Road opens the disc with a classic blues cut that I had never heard - great stuff! Worth the price of admission alone just for that song! The next three songs are probably from a live show and the sound quality suffers, but actually this adds to rather than detracts from the music - gives it a certain vibe! In any case, the performances on those live tracks are really great! Especially "Kind Hearted Woman" which you should compare to the later version that Peter did recently. I think I like this one better!

The rest of the tracks (including the first song) are in fine sound quality and I would guess are from the post-Mac era(?). Good stuff, and every song is blues-based - no weird experimental stuff.

I highly recommend this disc if you want a sample of the post-Mac Peter Green filtered to give you just the real blues stuff, you will not be disppointed!

Where's Fleetwood Mac?.......2000-09-05

I thought I was getting an album of Original Fleetwood Mac, but only two of the 16 cuts feature Mac. Eleven are solo Peter Green from after he left the band. I've been a fan of Peter Green since I first heard Albatross in 1967, so I still enjoyed the music, but it is grossly mislabeled.

Highs, lows, tortured blues.......2000-06-19

A broad collection of blues covers and originals that spans the curiously blue life of Peter Green. The vocals are every bit as revealing as the fine guitar work (from gritty to smooth, harnessed to wild). I would have loved to hear Peter and Albert together on Born under a Bad Sign, but I guess I'll settle for Peter's short, but reverential cover of this fine blues anthem. An earlier issue of this disc included Black Magic Woman and Green Manilishi, but I think their absence does not detract from this cd. I think inclusion of The Supernatural would have been an important cut, but Oh Well!

Unique recordings of a legendary band.......2007-05-14

During the three years or so covered on these two discs, Fleetwood Mac evolved from being a blues band to being something else entirely, and they still had another four fraught years to go before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were to join the remaining members and turn them into a license for printing money. The original line-up that signed to Blue Horizon in 1967 stayed relatively stable during these three years but apparently Jeremy Spencer's unwillingness to collaborate with Peter Green on his boss's material meant that a third guitarist was drafted into the band.

Eighteen-year old Danny Kirwan from the band Boilerhouse joined in August 1968, and made his BBC debut later that month with a live broadcast for the Radio One O'Clock Club before a studio audience. By this time, the band's name had shortened to just Fleetwood Mac, and for the final two sessions represented on this disc (from July 1970 and January 1971) Peter Green was no longer in the line-up.

Changes in direction and line-up meant that a fair amount of material was amassed that did not see the light of day on their records and there are seventeen titles on this set otherwise unrecorded, plus two that were on a solo album by Jeremy Spencer (helped out by mates from the band).

The one and three-quarter hours here barely scratches the surface of the amount of material they recorded for the BBC, though there are plenty enough Elmore James covers, psychedelic blues and time-stopping flights of guitar to feed the soul. Twenty-one sessions between 1967 and 1971 are mentioned in Ken Garner's book of BBC sessions In Session Tonight, each probably averaging 20 minutes in playing time, though many of these may well not be preserved, at least not in the quality of those here, which is largely excellent and appears in the main to have come from single-track master tapes (Need Your Love So Bad is a notable exception).

Nearly all are session recordings, though the CD kicks off with a blistering seven and a half minute version of Rattlesnake Shake that was recorded live at the Paris Theatre in 1970 for the In Concert series; and includes two live performances from the Radio One O'Clock Club show mentioned earlier.

Liner notes are sparse, giving only first broadcast dates without specifying the programme involved, and unfortunately line-ups are limited to surnames, not specifying what instruments were played or who is singing lead. In Session Tonight helps out a little here but doesn't identify the mystery pianist who crops up on ten of the tracks. The most likely candidates are Jeremy Spencer, when not playing guitar, or Christine Perfect, who is credited with playing on Stop Messing Around, and appeared on some of their records of this period. Sweet Home Chicago comes from a World Service session they shared with Eddie Boyd, who may well be the pianist on that particular track.

BBC sessions are not synonymous with John Peel and though nineteen tracks come from his Top Gear programme, the rest were all recorded for shows presented by other disc-jockeys, including David Symonds and hairy cornflake Dave Lee Travis. One session, the only one to appear in full, was recorded for a Top Gear spin-off called First Gear, presented by producer John Walters while Peel was off on holiday. The theme for this month-long series was rock and roll and Fleetwood Mac came up with an appropriate mix of originals in the style of Buddy Holly and Elvis, as well as covers of songs by the Everlies, Big Joe Turner and Bobby Vee, the last being a tribute to Buddy written by his mother to the tune of Peggy Sue Got Married. Their blues roots were not forgotten, though, and the newest session included features Jeremy Spencer's version of Son House's Preachin'. This is the song that inspired Robert Johnson's Preachin' Blues, as also featured in a brilliant solo rendition by Peter Green in 1968 for Top Gear.

These double-sided discs feature a CD one one side and DVD-A on the other. I do not have DVD-A or surround sound equipment, but the DVD sides, played in standard DVD format through a digital amplifier, sounded clear and full of detail. I would have to query the benefits of 5.1 surround sound, though, as all the tracks were recorded and mixed to monaural single-track tape; and the claim on the sticker that the CD sides comprise "complete album in stereo" is clearly incorrect.

Great example of White Boy Blues.......2006-11-25

As a previous reviewer pointed out, there are (at least) two flavors of Fleetwood Mac, the most familiar being the "pop" Mac of the '80s and beyond.

But before the arrival of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and to a lesser extent, Christine McVie and Bob Welch... they were a pure "Chicago" style blues band. Guitarists Peter Green... Jeremy Spencer... Danny Kirwan... and the namesake rythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie - they were truly devoted to the blues genre. They, and several other "white boy blues" bands (John Mayall and Mike Bloomfield come immeditely to mind) proved their legitimacy, and were embraced by the "real" bluesmen of the era.

The guitarists knew their chops. (Peter Green, in particular, has become a living legend.) And Fleetwood and McVie have ALWAYS laid down the beat, whether it was "Sweet Home Chicago" or "Go Your Own Way."

This 2-CD set is "quasi live" at the BBC (recorded at a time when The Yardbirds, The Stones, The Beatles were also making similar recordings - talk about an era in music evolution!). I believe it's recorded in mono, but it sounds pretty good. The song selection contains Mac originals - "Rattlesnake Shake," "Albatross," etc. - novelty tunes like the Buddy-Holly-esque "Buddy's Song" and "Linda" - and a lot of covers of the standard blues repertoire.

Highly recommended for fans of (early) Fleetwood Mac or electric blues. (My own copy of this CD set has sentimental value, as I purchased it in London as a souvenir of a visit there.)

Heard only one cut, but oh man!.......2005-06-09

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and what it morphed into (they went condo) are two different planets. Just heard "Rattlesnake Shake" on the 2-disc BBC Live CD and I know I need to have this CD. I wouldn't touch the 80's+ Fleetwood Mac with a ten-foot pole, but Peter Green's original band is WAY underheard.

Great Album!.......2006-08-15

After seeing Earl Thomas live at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2006, It was a must to go and buy his CD's.

Earl Thomas - Intersection, is a great album, with a lot well-known covers, excellent mix of blues, soul, jazz, and gospel! Earl Thomas' voice is amazing - never seen something like this before. His live shows are extraordinary and remarkable.

A must for all modern soul lovers!

Only Al Green can do this.......2005-08-25

This guy seems to switch producers and labels too often for 4 albums sparsed on some 5 to 10 year period. Label remained from last time, but Ike Turner's intro reads like here's a surefire talent -- and Ike, its usher. Well, that sort of inaptness and the overall dull first-timer face design should deter you from buying it. I overcame the hunch and bought. I was rewarded by exquisite sound of soul music like it were another recent Al Green helping. Producer and hornists aren't known but sound every bit pro and seasoned. It's genuine true-to-pattern soul, nothing doing. The only gleech I find is in intoning phrases. Mr Thomas kinda wavers instead of keeping firm and macho, you know. Like he were zobified by a Backstreet Boy or someone of nu r'n'b.

Earl rocks!.......2005-07-24

I've been listening to and going to see Earl Thomas play since the early '90s. This is definitely one of his better albums though the others are all good too. "Workin' Together" is a really good on this album, but if you really want to experience it, go see him live!

The Blue Horizon box distilled to one disc..........2007-03-04

...and kudos to Sony UK for having done such a fine job. While the 6 CD box The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions 1967-1969 contains the complete contents of the albums Fleetwood Mac, Mr. Wonderful, The Pious Bird of Good Omen, Blues Jam in Chicago (alternately known as Blues Jam at Chess and Fleetwood Mac in Chicago 1969) and The Original Fleetwood Mac, this compilation goes beyond those albums to Then Play On ("Oh Well," here broken up into two tracks, the A- and B-sides of the single; and "Rattlesnake Shake") and the band's Immediate singles "Man of the World" and "The Green Manalishi" (one of my favourite tracks of the Peter Green lineup), plus adding Chicken Shack's recording of "I'd Rather Go Blind" (pointing the way towards the later lineups of Fleetwood Mac, with Christine McVie) and a remix of "Albatross." I rather felt that remix to be unnecessary--nice, but unnecessary. I agree with other reviewers that other tracks could have been included instead, but there you go.

Either way, you finally have the tracks from Then Play On without massive amounts of tape hiss (such as is audible throughout the whole of that CD, a situation Warners has yet to rectify, 20 years on), plus a whole series of thoroughly essential tracks from this first (and IMO, best) edition of Fleetwood Mac, all together on one disc. The only other way to manage this is to buy the individual albums--thankfully, all are in print and available on CD--and create your own mix at home, something not all of us have time to do. Again I say, kudos to Sony for pulling this particular feat off.

Since other reviewers have already addressed the casual and curious fans of the original Fleetwood Mac, let me speak to those of you who are more serious followers of the genius of Peter Green that now find yourselves on the rocky road of foraging through the many repackaged recordings of the early band.
First and foremost:
this disc represents the one and only place you will find tracks from the Mac's labels; BLUE HORIZON, WARNERS /REPRISE and their intermittent shortlived stint with the doomed English label, IMMEDIATE all in one place.
Most of these songs have appeared in sometimes differing versions on other compilations, but these are the final studio mixes. AND digitally remastered for the first time! Thank you, Sony International.
I'd begun to think Green's final mixes of the two songs from the IMMEDIATE sessions(Man Of the World, Green Manalishi) would never make it to disc. Well, here they are.
Yes, there should of been a couple of tracks here that aren't;Love That Burns(Blue Horizon)Before the Beginning, ShowBiz Blues(Reprise) but alas! the Jeremy Spencer material is kept to a minimum and Danny Kirwan has just two cuts(the splendid blues track, Something Inside Of Me and the rare, interesting Dragonfly)so, I won't complain.
Nothing from the Live in Boston series(Jumping at Shadows)appears here but that no doubt, is due to another licensing snafu with the owner of those tapes(SNAPPER MUSIC?)
In any case, these tracks are pristine sounding remasters and the fact that Sony put up the $$$ to compile these recordings from the various labels is a good sign for the future. For a huge fan of Peter Green like me(you?), just having Man of the World and especially Green Manalishi here in their final mixes(my old vinyl copy is toast), is enough to purchase the disc.

Some Reservations.......2006-07-24

This is an interesting compilation, but is marred by some bizzare choices of material. There are at least two glaring omissions - for some reason that I can't comprehend, two of Green's most beautiful, haunting and personal songs, "Jumping at Shadows" and "Show-Biz Blues," are omitted. If the last two tracks had been dropped, these could easily have been included.

It's not clear to me where this set is directed. Fans of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac will already own most of this material, and novices would be much better served by picking up the classic "Then Play On" and disc one of the three "Live in Boston" discs on Snapper (and then following up with the next two).

This seems to me to be a missed opportunity - only three stars, I'm afraid.

British Blues Genius.......2006-03-25

A superb compilation and excellent recording .... having not heard some of these classics for decades...its like meeting up with old dear friend...fantastic.....heaven on a disc !

Neat and tidy starter set!.......2005-12-07

I was quite throughly impressed upon my first listen to this set, considering there has never really been a comprehensive single disc set featuring the mark I line-up of the band. Bascially, it's a single disc comp of the Blue Horizon box set, but has some nice single mixes and some nice bonus materials. Enjoy the US version of "Need Your Love So Bad," as well as the blistering "Shake Your Moneymaker." Included as well is the epic (read: SEVEN MINUTE) "Albatross" consisting of both parts of the double sided single. Loved my first taste of Chicken Shack with Christine Perfect doing "I Would Rather Go Blind," which inspired me to buy more Chicken Shack. Plus, the fantastic version of Chris Coco's remix of "Albatross." You get a kind of "bookend" of their storied career. If you further enjoy Peter Green, check out his solo catalogue and his Splinter stuff. Otherwise, this set rocks!

Good music, bad recording.......2005-12-13

Music was very good, but ythe recording levels varied trememdnously from song to song. Some of the recordings were so bad, there was rattling from interference. I thought I blew my speakers. Changed to a new CD and everything is fine. Can't recommend.

Too much mediocrity drags down the best material.......2005-02-19

This collection appears to be an attempt to bridge the gap between the casual Fleetwood Mac fan who didn't know they ever played blues...and the obsessives who feel the Blue Horizon box set represents the pinnacle of the band's achievement. While the box set is overkill on a nuclear scale, two discs is still more than really needed to get the best of Green together when a CD can hold 80 minutes of material.

Here, You get material previously found on the "Mr. Wonderful","Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac", and "Then Play On" albums, some period singles, and some tracks heard in different versions on the double disc "Fleetwood Mac Live in Chicago".

The material that best acquits itself is usually the tunes the band wrote for itself. "Oh Well","Jumpin' at Shadows" and "Black Magic Woman" are revelatory here in live versions, revealing that most of the Green era's magic came in concert, not in the studio. "World in Harmony" proves to be one of the more tuneful and interesting instrumentals the early unit put out. "Green Manalishi" is tough and an early version of the single "Man of the World" sounds crisper here. (Presumably, the master for the single has deterioarated over time..it sounds very hissy.) 2 of the songs also found on "Live in Chicago" ("Talk to me Baby" AKA "I Can't Hold Out","Like it This way") sound better in more guitar oriented versions without the piano/horn clutter.

On the 2nd disc, highlights are "Blues in B Flat Minor" (this later became "Before the Beginning" on "Then Play On"), slide workout "Coming, I'm Coming" and "Stranger Blues" in a live rendition with plenty of screaming slide from Jeremy Spencer. "Rattlesnake Shake" is also great.

Unfortunately, Spencer is mostly responsible for the disc's lowest points (overbearing vocals on Elmore James' "The Sun is Shining" and Otis Rush's "I Have to Laugh"). The live cut of "Coming Your Way" from "Then Play On" suffers from a poor vocal mix. Many of the blues chestnuts covered by the band here are just not inspiring.

The set also is missing several important recordings from the Green era, 2 time single hit instrumental "Albatross", Kirwan's "Although the Sun is Shining" and "Like Crying", and Spencer's take on James' "Dust my Broom".

Had those been added to the highlights above, you come out with a 5 star 15 track overview. But as released, it tends to make the case AGAINST Green era Mac. The best Peter Green era CD is still "Then Play On".

Music wonderful -- sources lacking.......2004-03-28

The music of course is wonderful; my complaint is with Castle reissues in general; why is it that Rhino does such a great job listing recording dates etc., but on Castle reissues one is left to guess? There are so many versions of early Fleetwood Mac songs available, it would be nice to know which is which.

Move Over Eric............2003-12-09

Fans of 60's & 70's British, White-Boy Blues bands like John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Savoy Brown, Ten Years After and The Yardbirds need to look no further for the summit of the genre's Mount Olympus. If you see "Fleetwood Mac" an expect Stevie Nicks and AOR orientated pop music, just hit the back button on your browser now. This is not your sister's Fleetwood Mac & Peter Green wasn't called the "Green God" for nothing. Green is arguably the best "white" blues guitarists ever, heck one of the best blues guitarist ever, period! There is not a weak track in the lot; and the sound is very good. So if you enjoy the @ss-kickin' blues of Kim Simmonds, Alvin Lee, Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor etc...you owe it to yourself to get this album ASAP. There is absolutely no way you will regret it.

How Blue Can He Get?.......2003-11-15

This is THE set to own if you wish to get a taste of what the early Mac were all about.
Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer were certainly talented musicians, good singers and great guitarists, John McVie was a really solid bassist, and Mick Fleetwood was a fabulous drummer, but the true power behind the band was the phenomenally gifted Peter Green.
To hear the young Peter Green sing and play with such skill and feeling is to truly experience joy. There are so many great tunes on the two disks that it would take too much space to discuss them all. Suffice it to say that if you like blues, and are open to the idea of young white British guys playing blues, then this collection is for you. There simply were and are no better blues guitarists than Peter Green. And his singing is every bit as great as his playing. You would get no argument from Clapton or anyone else about this.
Pete and I are the same age; I am glad he is "back" and playing the blues again. One of the biggest disappointments of my life came in about 1969. I was eagerly awaiting the band's upcoming concert at The Tyrone Guthrie Theatre in Mpls. They hit the West Coast first, where Jeremy fell prey to some religious fanatics, and then Pete as well (this may not be exactly what happened), and then the band cancelled all of the remaining shows.
After an eternity Pete has resurfaced. I wish him the best. He appeared in the Scorsese blues series, but alas, did not play. At least Beck (Jeff) played.

B.B. said Pete was the only other blues guitarist who could make shivers go up and down his spine. High praise. Without a doubt one of the greatest, most soulful blues players ever. It simply doesn't get any better than this.
