Unnecessary to own for Beatles fans.......2005-04-08
At the time this was made, this was one of the few places to get these early recordings made by the Beatles in Hamburg, Germany. They acted as backing group to English rocker Tony Sheridan (who sounds much like a B-grade Elvis Presley). These early recordings are from the days when Pete Best was still behind the drumkit, instead of Ringo Starr.
HIGHLIGHTS:
The Beatles are only really here on 3 tracks, "Ain't She Sweet?" (where John actually sings lead), "Cry for a Shadow" (an instrumental written by the Beatles as a tribute to English star Cliff Richard's backing group The Shadows), and "My Bonnie", where the group really is only there as instrumental backing for Sheridan. This last single is a key piece to Beatles lore, as it was a fan seeking that song in Brian Epstein's NEMS record shop that led him to seek out the group. The rest, as they say, is history.
LOWS:
No real discernable lows so much as a general malaise. Outside of the 3 Beatles tracks, you get garage band versions of classic 50s numbers. You're better off with Little Richard, Dion, Chris Montez, etc etc etc.
BOTTOM LINE:
The 3 you really want this for are available on "Anthology 1" these days with other Fab Four rarities. The other performances aren't especially noteworthy, but if you're here because you're a big Sheridan fan, you may want to look at his Website. It looks like he still records. http://www.tony-sheridan.de/
Tony Sheridan.......2004-03-19
Tony is a good rocker and this CD is the album he recorded with The Beatles (re-issued in 1964 as "The Beatles 1st"). The best track is, of course , "My Bonnie", which was a top 10 hit in 1962.
Of historical note but much more Sheridan than Early Beatles.......2003-11-12
The value of "in the Beginning: The Early Tapes of the Beatles" is more in terms of music history than the actual music. Tony Sheridan earned his place in the story of rock 'n' roll when he recorded "My Bonnie" in 1961. The song was a decent little hit, but today it is remembered because it was the first studio session featuring the Beatles, albeit, as Sheridan's backing group. The Beatles recorded a few tracks with Sheridan in Hamburg in 1961. Those who pick this up think it has songs by the pre-Fab Four will, of course, be disappointed (it is still Pete Best and not Ringo Starr on drums). The playing and the songs are comparable to what eventually came out on the the first CD of the first volume of the Beatles' "Anthology" series. The songs are all pretty sedate covers of popular rock standards from the early years such as "Ain't She Sweet" and "Kansas City." Sheridan sings the lead on all of the songs but one, that being the first track, "Ain't She Shweet," where John Lennon does the singing. The second track, "Cry for a Shadow" is a driving instrumental piece written by Lennon and George Harrison. So the two songs that can legitmately be called Beatles songs are the first two tracks, although Paul McCarntey can be heard in the background on "My Bonnie," for what that is worth.
As for the rest, the Beatles back up Sheridan on a half dozen songs: "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Why, "If You Love Me, Baby," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "My Bonnie," and "Nobody's Child." The remaining five tracks are Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers, the original line up for which would have been Sheridan on vocals and guitar backed by guitarists Ken Packwood and Rick Richards, bassist Colin Melander, keyboardist Ian Hines and drummer Jimmy Doyle. However, none of those songs are particularly interesting. The attraction of this album is that you get to hear what John, Paul and George were like as musicians just a couple of years before they spearheaded the British Invasion and basically changed forever a little thing we like to call music. But if you have "Anthology 1" you already have the big three from this one.
DON'T BE FOOLED LIKE I WAS!.......2002-11-12
It is total trickery to put "The Beatles" on this CD cover. This is just Tony Sheridan and his other band. There are only two Beatles songs on the disc, and both are also on The Beatles' "Anthology 1". There are only two good things about this disc.
One: The track "My Bonnie" is complete, without the Paul McCartney interview at the beginning, as on the Anthology. That ruined it.
And two: It's in stereo.
Other than that, it is really bad. The songs are really bad and slow. Really bad 1950s type songs. Don't be lured into buying this like I was!
What a [poor bargain].......2002-10-27
These aren't the Beatles. This is Tony Sheridan. I'm only giving it one star cause it's stereo.

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE IT, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!.......2001-05-25
I love this collection. I really do. It is such a delightful treasure trove of memories. It speaks to a fun period in history when the Beatles brought an original brand of music and delightful banter into the mainstream public.
In early 1964, the world was reeling from the aftermath of President Kennedy's untimely death (11/22/63) and the futility of the Vietnam War. Racial tensions and unemployment, then as now were societal ills that were in the forefront during the 1963-1964 period. The Beatles injected levity, original expression and just plain fun where it was sorely needed. Against such a stark historical backdrop, the Beatles were radiant, bright and just plain fun.
They were also trend setters. Their clothing styles and haircuts have been emulated by countless many people and their music continues to delight audiences. Their songs have been remade and they have proved time and again that they have permanent staying power. Emulation of their work and general appearance speak to a general affinity for them. After all, they did help define a generation and even now have a strong following. I think they are timeless classics.
This collection is such a treat. I really love it.
This Cd is the best one that I've ever heard.......1998-11-06
When I listened to the splendid sound of this CD, expecially the drum solo's were allright and the gitarsolo's and also the singing solo's were OK.

No music.......2005-03-16
There are no Beatle songs on this disc. It contains interviews and on-stage introductions from the Beatles tours of Vancouver (1964) and Seattle (1966). Run time is just over 25 minutes all on one track.
A REAL TREAT.......2001-12-25
This delightful collection of Beatles' outtakes from 1964-66 is a must have for serious Beatle collectors. What makes this one so wonderful is that one can track the musical progress they make on the outtakes. In short, one is listening to the development of a song and the selection is nothing short of wonderful.
Some Anthology Tapes.......2000-06-15
This is a good compilations of outtakes versions of 1965, 66 and 67 records. This sound is a sparse sound, but is very audible. Collector's need this.

Customer Reviews:
A HEARTY YEAH, YEAH, YEAH! I LOVE IT!.......2001-05-23
I have always enjoyed the Beatles' press conferences and this delightful collection is no exception. Each Beatle is distinct in his presentation; John, the wickedly satirical front man, Paul, the intellectual diplomat, George, the shy, somewhat introspective and rather serious and Ringo, up front and seemingly friendly. Banter and ideas are freely exchanged throughout the press conferences. I really think this is such a treat.
If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. This gets both thumbs up, a round of applause and a hearty yeah, yeah, yeah!
GROTTY.......2000-02-14
In general, during press confrences and interviews, the "fabs" were usually bored, tired, stupid or oh so very stoned. On this CD they're all of the above.

There is No Music on this..........2001-02-20
Don't know what CD this other reviewer is talking about, but this is purely an INTERVIEW disc. Don't expect to sing unless it's to your own tune.
As for an interview disc, it's decent but not necessary. If you own a few of these already, you'll realize that they're pretty much redudant after the first few tracks. As a piece of history, they're interesting but nothing more than that. They don't provide any major insights as The Beatles' answers to most questions are typical and trite. There are few interview discs out there that are actually good such as Lennon's interview the day he was assassinated. This particular interview disc however doesn't provide anything new to warrant a purchase.
Overall, an average interview disc. Once again, there is NO MUSIC on this CD.
Great CD.......2000-07-03
This compact disc is an excellent cd if you love oldies, and you know how to sing. This c.d. will make you keep on wanting to sing and listen to it over and over.

I hate this album.......2004-11-18
To think that they have two failed LP's whcih have since been dubbed 'Birth of a legend' and 'Yellow Matter Custard' in their pockets and the only rare stuff we get is THe Beatles with Tony Sheridan. This album is worth steeringh clear of. The Beatles only appear properly on two songs, the first two songs. On the other twelve songs Tony Sheridan is the lead vocalist and only half fo those song feature the Beatles on backing. The 'Beat Brothers' are not the Beatles. Oh, by the way, Birth of a legend is an early 1962 LP that they cut for Decca, who didn't sign them, and the BBC didn't sign them on the strength of 'Yellow Matter Custard', which it wasn't originally called. Third time lucky, I suppose. But even if they aren't as good as Please Please Me or Sergeant Pepper, they are two LP's made up entirely of Beatles songs, and the public and the fans deserve to have these two albums released!
The best collection of the early tapes of the Beatles on cd.......2001-07-18
This is a brilliant cd. it gave me great pleasure to listen to. it shows a completely different side to the beatles style. As the backers!! This is the only collection of offical beatles recordings that EMI, Parlophone, and Apple Records do not have control over. do not let the different label put you off buying this cd. just as much work has gone into the restoration of these tracks as goes into any Apple or EMI Beatles album.this disk would be a sound investment for any Beatles fan and would be a good and well recommended addition to there collection
