Canadian flutist and soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett traveled to Cuba and immersed herself in the island's music to make this CD, combining other Canadian musicians with a host of gifted Cubans. Guided by senior percussionist Guillermo Barreto on timbales, the result is a genuine exploration of what is most distinctive and valuable in Cuban music and the special relationship of its African elements to jazz. The traditions come together most fully in Gonzalo Rubalcaba's exploration of Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy," but there are numerous delights here, from Bunnett's immersion in Cuban rhythms to the enchanting singing of Merceditas Valdes on several traditional songs in Yoruba dialect. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars A pioneering effort.......2004-02-25

One could make a pretty strong case that Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club (not to mention the innumerable spin-offs) would've been extremely unlikely if not impossible without this groundbreaking effort.

Yes, it helps that Jane "Habana Juana" Bunnett is a Canadian citizen and therefore had much easier access to Cuba, its rich musical heritage, and the musicians who're keeping it alive, than did Yanquis. But she still had to go there when no one else was; she still had to figure out the tricky Afro-Cuban rhythms (which took her quite a while); and she still had to make it all work on disc.

If she has never surpassed this startling disc with subsequent efforts in a similar vein--"Rendezvous Brazil/Cuba," "Chamalongo," "Ritmo + Soul," "Alma de Santigo," and "Cuban Odyssey"--although the latter certainly approaches if not betters it--she has nevertheless produced a body of Afro-Cuban jazz that any serious Latin-jazz fan must come to terms with.

If nothing else, she enabled Merceditas Valdes, a truly gifted vocalist, a chance to have her unique talents exposed to a worldwide audience at the end of her live. Plus, she discovered a number of unique instrumentalists, not least Yosvanny Terry, a stunning tenor sax player.

A special disc (as well as the others in her discography mentioned above) that deserves to be heard by everyone interested in this marvelous music, Afro-Cuban jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Song From Argentina.......2000-01-23

We first heard the "Song From Argentina" when driving through the streets of London on our way to the 606 Jazz Club. The haunting strains of the melody and the viruosity of the musicians captured my heart to such an extent that I had to order the CD the very next day. Pure Latin American magic, this particular track at least will make even the coldest heart turn to jelly, and if the other samples from the CD are anything to go by, one should be positively melting by close of play! Buy and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Tropically Inspired: the Early Santana.......2000-06-16

Capitalizing on the recent popularity of Carlos Santana, Caroline / Cleopatra affiliate Purple Pyramid released Tropical Spirits Part I & II on Leap Day 2000. It is essentially a collection of early Santana tunes and unreleased material. "Acapulco Sunrise", which was slated to appear on Santana's debut disc (1969's Santana) but did not, is included.

The stellar (but blandly named) "Jam In E" and "Jammin' Home", taped at Pacific Recording Studios in 1969, actually served as part of guitarist Neal Schoen's audition to Santana. "El Corazon Manda", "Jingo" and "Soul Sacrifice" - all Santana classics - appear on Tropical Spirits in their original versions.

This rare non-Columbia, non-Polydor, non-Arista Santana release, by virtue of content, does merit ownership. It contains 15 tracks in all on two CD's, mostly highlighting the very early part of the band's career. The songs appear in their original arrangements; extended versions that mirror the Santana reputation in the first place: live, tight and technically sizzling performances. Nine selections surpass six minutes in playing time; the longest clocks in at 11:24 ("Latin Tropical").

The set also includes four "Millennium Remix 2000" versions of "Jingo", "Acapulco Sunrise", "Fried Neckbones and Home Fries" and "Soul Sacrifice", which make for danceable club play. In all, though most of the songs are available elsewhere. However, this is a definite must-own for any die-hard Carlos Santana fan. It is a portrait of an artist that captures him during his classic period before his jazz-fusion jaunts of the seventies, world beat inspired themes of the 80's and phenomenal, all-star collaborative effort of 1999 (Supernatural).

5 out of 5 stars The Real Carlos Santana.......2000-05-21

Unlike that Weak Supernatural Corporate Disc, This is THe Real Deal Santana. His Music Has so Many Different Kinds Of Fusion. His Instrumentals are Timeless. His Guitar Playing Is Incredible. The Brother Has Mad Tones.Alot Of Feeling&Vibes In His Work.Very Essential.

5 out of 5 stars This CD rocks ! It's Santana he rocks!.......2000-03-24

WOW! This is a good CD that is worth buying. All of these songs are worth hearing more than 10 times.

      3 out of 5 stars Boring.......2000-03-03

After Supernatural this is boring. It amounts to 15 instumental jam sessions without the usual Santana emotion.
