"Casey Jones you'd better watch your speed!" - Dead for Non Deadheads.......2007-06-18
If you can't stand the "cosmic" stuff, this and American Beauty are the Grateful Dead albums for you. This is a classic country-rock album - one of my favorites in the genre, along with Harvest and Beggars Banquet. Eight tracks, and seven get my full blessing: the best are the anthem Uncle John's Band, the Dylan-esque Dire Wolf, appropriately boogieing New Speedway Boogie, the longish folk song Black Peter, and of course the infamous Casey Jones (the one that goes "Drivin' that train, high on cocaine"). There's not a sprawling, sidelong jam in sight - everything's under six minutes, in fact. And it's very enjoyable roots music with lyrics that are a lot more interesting than the '60s Dead's acid-induced ramblings (Easy Wind, Uncle John's Band). The only song not of note is High Time - otherwise, this is an essential release. Even for those who don't like Live/Dead and the others.
The Classic GRATEFUL DEAD Album........2007-05-28
Since I'm not a diehard DEAD fan, but I wanted to buy one album...I took the advice of a reviewer who stated that Workingman's Dead is THE one to get, if you get only one!
All the titles are long-time classics now; "Casey Jones" being the most popular of them all.
This is probably the best GRATEFUL DEAD studio release.
'Nuff said?
4 1/2 stars.......2007-03-22
one of the grateful deads two great studio albums (the other being the sublime masterpiece "american beauty"). this is a mostly gentle countryish affair with acoustic guitars, fine harmonies, and easy flowing rhythms. only "easy wind," a blues number (and a song with hypnotic drum patterns, by the way), and the classic "casey jones" have electric guitar, to my recollection. the album opener "uncle john's band" is one of robert hunter's finest lyrics, and a dead classic, as well. little bit of spanish feel to garcia's guitar work on that one. the remastered version definitely has an much improved sound over the original cd version. so get that one. of the six bonus cuts, only the live version of "uncle john's band," is really essential. the other five add nothing, and i feel actually detract from, the excellence of the original 8 tracks. a small quibble though, as the bonus cuts cost you nothing extra, and you can always skip 'em. all in all, a fine, very enjoyable studio set, with two bonafide classic songs. highly recommended.
Fantastic Album.......2007-01-24
Can't say much more than the other reviewers, this is an excellent album

Amazon.com essential recording
Workingman's Dead and its successor from later in 1970, American Beauty, are the Dead albums even non-Deadheads embrace. With these two new-decade statements, the group reigned in its demonstrative instrumental side in favor of a pithier presentation of prize tunes. The opener, "Uncle John's Band," signaled that this was a relatively streamlined Dead. "Dire Wolf," "Cumberland Blues," and "Casey Jones" hammer the point home: The Grateful Dead could set aside the jams for a while and make a great album. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
One of two really great Dead albums.......2003-02-15
...the other album being, of course, "American Beauty". This album works so well because for once these loveable long-haired, dope-smoking, acid-dropping, heroin-injecting, coke-snorting, whiskey-swilling, barbituate-injesting hippies decided to forsake their nauseatingly self-indulgent free-form jam tendencies (see "Live Dead") and craft a straightforward, unpretentious, no-nonsense album of mellow acoustic rock. If you are wanting to introduce a friend to the Grateful Dead for the first time, this is the record you throw on the turntable. "Casey Jones" and "Uncle John's Band" were the most popular cuts, but there is not a single bad track here.
Great disc.......2003-01-06
Hard to say must have, but I wouldn't want to be without it.
Short But Perfect, Nonetheless.......2002-11-19
On this album (clocking in around 32 minutes) the Dead showcase a folkier, more rustic sound, alluded to on their previous album, Aoxomoxoa. It also a wonderful starting place for your Dead collection, including two radio singles that are still played fairly often on classic rock stations: Uncle John's Band and Casey Jones. For fans of blues and country music, this album is also a great place for you to start; it includes country/bluegrass cuts Dire Wolf and Cumberland Blues, which are both staples of the Dead's live show, and New Speedway Boogie, which is one of Jerry's best straight blues tunes. The other songs (High Time, Black Peter, and Easy Wind) are not as easily characterized, but they fit perfectly with the folk-blues-country-rock that characterizes the tracks that I've described. Go buy this album, this is as good as music gets!
a classic dead album - a great one to start with.......2002-10-16
One of their 2 amazing mostly acoustic albums from the early 70s. This along with American Beauty are essential and great places to start with this band. Just beautiful.
Some very sublime GD.......2002-10-11
This album is full of classics. You have the soft, yet sweet High time' which christened quite a dead set as centerpiece or respectable song that gave way to dead sets to remember for ever (i.e. 7 20 94 Deer creek, 6 27 85 Saratoga nY).
Uncle John s became a great 2nd set tune that gave way to some of the most beautiful impriovisation I ve heard from this band (Uncle J s > Playin, or UJB > Jam, or the case of new year s 87 Bucket > UJB, what a blowout !! : ) )
Dire wolf, a strong 1st set number that gave sets identity, depending where the show is played. Gorgeous song.
New Speedway, a great 2nd set big player. Coming in at my favorite the 2 19 95 show in SLC which i attended. More of this song, the 6 28 92 Noblesville IN show where we got lay me down > El Paso > New speedway. Those are the NSB s I remember. strong, full of good playing, and leaving the crowds happy at your show.
The rest of the songs here on Workingman s Dead, Black Peter, Cumberland B s, Easy Wind, and Casey Jones are songs to leave you content with good lyrics, and what I call a good attempt at North American Folklore in songs.
