Tired of the showboating image that his early live performances had saddled him with--and that his black audience viewed as demeaning and degrading to his musical talent--Hendrix dissolved his Experience in 1969 in search of a more terra-firma-grounded, blues-oriented persona. On New Year's Eve, Hendrix, his old Army buddy bassist Billy Cox, and ex-Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles performed a loose, jam-filled set at New York's Fillmore East (completists will want the panoramic though uneven Live at the Fillmore East). Released a few months after his New Year's Eve 1970 concert, Band of Gypsys underscored Hendrix's desired return to basics--even if his basic was at a level most guitarists could never attain in a lifetime of playing. --Billy Altman

Gimme Jimi.......2007-05-14
This little known piece of Hendrix history with Buddy is a must for Jimi fans. It's not quite the same "experience" but has some hot, classic tracks.
the best.......2007-04-25
This music is about spirituality. Be a critic of a bird and you aren't seeing the bird. That is your mind is telling you a lot of garbage others told your mind concerning birds. Let go of what you "know," listen to Band of Gypsys, dig that "Message of Love." GodblessU.
Buy it for the guitar.......2007-03-16
THe songs are not as good as the Experience ones and the scat singing Buddy Miles can be a little annoying (I also prefer Hendrix as even a singer over him)... nonetheless, this is vital Hendrix and the guitar is stellar. Hendrix continued to soar and improve as a guitarist (though it's hard to imagine the best electric guitarist improving...) and it's really sad that we lost him, and who knows what places he would've taken us to had he lived longer:(

ALMOST PERFECT, EXCEPT FOR SOME POWER TRIO CLICHES AND MEDIOCRE SOUND QUALITY
This album was the only official live album authorized by Jimi Hendrix. The songs are taken from two shows, New Years Eve, 1969 and New Years Day 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York.
There have been several releases of this album. The original LP release contained the six songs listed here and was 45 minutes long. The first CD release was a quick and nasty job, and also contained the 6 six songs.
In the early nineties, there was a new CD release that contained three bonus and was 20 minutes longer. The bonus tracks were Hear My Train, Foxy Lady and Stop. There were no liner notes. This is the version I own. I have seen other versions with different bonus tracks.
The latest version is a "remastered" version but only contains the original 6 tracks. An improved sound would certainly be welcomed over older versions. I haven't heard the remastered version, but what how much the sound could be improved. It seems like most of the problem is in the original source tapes, how it was recorded and mixed.
There is also a double CD called Band of Gypsies Live at the Fillmore East that has some of these songs plus many others from these two nights.
This is a refreshing change from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, especially if you have been collecting the hundreds of different CD releases that are out there. While the Jimi Hendrix Experience is one of the most important bands in rock history, there was just too much material released from their short lifespan and some of it was getting stale. Just how many versions of Foxy Lady and Purple Haze do you need to hear, especially when none of the versions are significantly different from the others.
Band of Gypsies includes Buddy Miles (who had a successful solo career) on drums and Bobby Cox on bass. They add a new dimension to Hendrix's music.
What I particularly like is that Hendrix doesn't do all the singing. It is interesting to hear someone else (Miles in this case) take the lead at times and Hendrix sing background.
This group is more of a straight ahead rock power trio. There are a few times the band lapses into power trio cliches with bass and guitar riffs. And the vocal stylings are reminiscent of a number of power trios of the time. But, at the same time, it is interesting to hear Hendrix's take on those Cliches.
So what is different about this album is that instead of being an innovative leader and creating revolutionary sounds, he is playing to sounds of the times and is just an evolutionary part of the history of the power trio.
My favorite Hendrix album is called Blues. It selection of songs that capture Hendrix at his innovative best.

I must comment that when this was first ordered, we had it delivered to a P O Box, but to no avail. Apparently someone there either stole it, or delivered it to the wrong P O Box, but Amazon was quite nice to us, and sent aonther copy free of charge to our residence.

BEST TRIBUTE IN YEARS !!.......2007-01-31
i have to agree with crimzap on this one!!! but like he said buy a copy and check it out for yourself., if you are a hendrix fan (like my self) than you have got to get this cd its one of the best tribute albums to be released in years! jimi would be proud of this one and to know that his music and legacy lives on!
Great jams!.......2007-01-12
I generally find it refreshing to hear other interpretations of Jimi's work, and that's what you get here. The different guitarists (Andy Aledort, Rick "Hendrix", James Nixon, Gary Serkin, Kenny Olson, Eric Gales, and Sheldon Reynolds) that appear with Miles and Cox do the songs great justice. Billy Cox is right on with the bass as is Buddy Miles with the drums. This is one very solid album, unlike some compilations of various musicians doing Hendrix. Don't take my opinion. Buy it and try it out for yourself. You have seen the other opinion that it was a "sad" piece of work. I wouldn't take that opinion. By the way, you can buy a signed copy of this (signed by Billy Cox) on Jimi's website and for no extra signature fee.
sad.......2007-01-03
Buddy Miles needs to let go of this obsession he has with continuing to link his musical personality with his old buddy Jimi. Miles has his own high-level of musical abilities and needs to separate himself from the past. Just doesn't seem healthy to me. He is an amazing drummer in his own right: NO ONE is better with creating the pocket and groove for a band, bar NONE. I just wish him good things after having met him about ten years ago at a blues club in Chicago. He is a very, very thoughtful and gentle person.

A MUST HAVE RARITY IN YOUR HENDRIX COLLECTION!.......2007-05-25
On Feb. 24th of 1969, The Jimi Hendrix Expierence rocked The Royal Albert Hall in London, the first U.K. shows they had played in over a year and what would turn out to be their last. Neither Reprise in the U.S. nor Polydor in the U.K. issued a live album of this concert though a few songs were released on the American album "Hendrix In The West" in 1972. However this concert has been issued and re-issued on various indie labels throughout the last few decades, spliced and diced in every which way conceivable complete with fade ins, fade outs, deceiving track squencing, even the insane idea of chopping the song "Room Full Of Mirrors" in half then playing both parts on top of one another and labeling it a "short version." The various issues have made claims that this was The J.H.E.s last concert (not true) and even Jimis' last concert before he died (VERY NOT TRUE). Jimis' last concert was on 9/6/70 at an open-air festival in Germany, not at The Royal Albert Hall in London.
One of those deceiving re-issues happened to be the first Hendrix I ever owned. It was 1987, I was in the fourth grade, and I bought a cassette titled "The Last Expierence" on the Legacy International label. The front cover made the latter claim that I mentioned above. The Royal Albert Hall concert is special to me in particular because it was the first I'd heard such Hendrix classics like "Purple Haze," "Fire," or "Voodoo Child." After all these years, I wanted to reunite with the live show that got me started on Jimi as a youngster but I didn't want to buy another cheap hodge-podge of it. I'm glad I held out until I found this great 2-CD set, which gives you the entire concert (except for one song) AND presents it in the correct order finally!
Apon hearing this concert for the first time in almost 16 years, it's just as awesome and undeniably RAW (keyword there) as I remember it. But as I listened, it dawned on me why Expierence Hendrix has probally chosen to not re-issue this concert, in all honesty, it's not one of Jimis' best shows. While Jimi and the guys turn in some killer versions of "Stone Free," "I Don't Live Today," and "Foxey Lady," each with unique solos unlike any other live versions you've heard before, feedback and hiss from the amps plagues many of the songs, and not in a good way. Jimi also sounds tired throughout the set and sometimes, downright frustrated making more apologies to the audience than he did at Woodstock. On this version of "Fire" in paticular, Jimi dosen't bother to sing the song with much enthusiasm or even include the come-ons between verses ("oh move over Rover..."). It rocks none the less though. That's not to say Jimi was without his humor on this night, his mimicking Noel saying "blast from the past" in a British accent is funny and there are a few times Jimi chastises the audience for not bringing their instruments so they could come up on stage and jam with him.
There is no "bad" Hendrix you can buy, that's one of the things I love about Jimi, everything he did was special in some way or another, be it on the stage or in the studio, he was that full of creativity. This concert is great in it's own way, like Woodstock and all the others. You get to hear the second time Jimi performed "The Star Spangled Banner" in front of an audience, right after he completes "Wild Thing, and then procedes to do what is titled on the CD as "The Smashing Of The Amps." A feeback noise fest as Jimi smashes his guitar to bits. Probally one of the last times he did that for his audience.
