The title song on this album, Brown Eyed Girl, has a very good memory to it and takes me back to the late 1960s. A boyfriend I had used to call me his "Brown Eyed Girl". Sweet album, I love the music from the 60s and 70s, love this CD!

Van Morrisson is one of the most under rated musician/song writers ever. I've owned and listened to his recordings for years (since the '60s). This album is on a par with all his other great works.

I own every album that Van has ever created and, to be honest, the tracks on here are actually quite good, but....

Don't be fooled...

This is YET ANOTHER release of the "Bang" sessions Van did in the late 1960's. They have been released many times under various album names. This is probably all very annoying to Van himself but I suspect that there's little he can do to prevent "Bang" from milking that recording session over and over and over.

I grew up in San Francisco, not So Cal, but these songs remind me of not only my adolescent and teen years but my older sisters who is no longer with us. I remember being about 10 years old and her having her red radio under the bed at night and listening to these songs while she was in bed and i danced to them too.

Art Laobe's "60 Killer Oldies" is a 4 CD collection of some of the greatest music of all time.

One of the CD's is entitled, "Memories of El Monte: The roots of L.A.'s Rock and Roll." The first song on that CD is "Memories of El Monte." Here are just a few of the words to that song:

If they only had those dances again,
I'd know where to find you and all my old friends...

Earth angel, earth angel will you be mine at El Monte...

If we could go back to
The days of the past,

I'd show you a love
A love that would last.

O I remember those wonderful
Dances in El Monte.
In El Monte.

I grew up in the San Bernardino area and all my friends used to go to those dances at the American Legion Hall in El Monte during the 1960's. I never did get to go to any of the dances in El Monte, but had always wanted to. I always danced at the National Guard Armory in Riverside, the VFW Hall in Rialto, or the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino or the Kaiser Dome.

All of the songs on these CDs invoke emotions in me that bring both laughter and tears and they always give me a longing for the "Good O' Days." Now day it seems as though the only way to go to a dance is to go to a bar. Back then, there were dances everywhere. Bar hopping isn't my style, but I miss those old dances including the ones in peoples garages or living rooms.

Art Laboe used to be a DJ on KRLA from Pasadena. KRLA and XPRS were my two favorite radio stations. I don't even know if KRLA even exists any more since I no longer live in the Southern California area.

Anyway, the songs on these CDs remind me of the dances, the radio, my first boy friend, my first love, my marriage, my first child, and my youth. O to be young and in love again!

All of the songs are good and it's difficult to choose a single favorite, but among my many favorites are "Angel Baby," "Daddy's Home," "Dedicated To The One I Love," "Together," "Baby I'm For Real," "Natural High," "10 Commandments of Love," "I'm Your Puppet," "Confessin' A Feeling," "In The Still of The Night, and "Those Oldies But Goodies Remind Me of You." But really, I like all of the songs on this CD collection.

I give this set of CDs five stars plus plus *****++.

Hello....Back about 7 years ago, I got my dream car, a fire red '64 Impala. I bought all of Art's cassette that were available at the time, a must have to go along with my beautiful dream car and cruisin the streets of the Bay Area.

In the course of the last 7 years, they have either gotten worn out or just lost. I love all of these songs and reminds me of listening to my moms old record player, running around and singing songs with my brush as a microphone.

A must-have for any helpless romantic like myself.

Extravagance in packaging is no vice, especially when the media--six CDs wrapped in mockup 45 sleeves inside one of those carrying cases that were the in thing for late-'60s singles buyers--so perfectly enhance the sounds contained within. Of course, it's what's in the digital bitstream that counts, and Beg, Scream & Shout!'s selections are masterfully chosen. Unlike Rhino's excellent but somewhat predictable R&B Box, this one strikes a better balance between well-known hits and artists and great sides by second-tier acts. This approach allows many more surprises to break through over the course of the 144 tracks, almost all presented in single-mix mono. This is not only a spectacular assemblage of some of the greatest music ever released, it is arguably the greatest packaging job of all time. While I know some will wonder why there are not specific songs from their favorite artists included, they miss the point. This is a beautiful archive of the greatest musical decade of the rock era. The fact that each artist gets just one track, and there are nearly 150 different artists represented, is mute testimony to the unbelievable wealth of great music released in a mere ten years. Should you also own Star Time, Emporers of Soul, The Master, Otis!, and The Queen of Soul (to name a few and all five star boxes in their own right)? Absolutely. But I have found more undiscovered jems in this set than even the brilliant first volume of Stax/Volt singles. If you have any love at all for the golden age of soul music, get off your wallet and spring for this masterpiece. While your at it, buy one for your soul-loving friend as a Christmas present. You/he/she may never listen to anything else.
As an aside to "music lover" from El Paso. Don't denigrate the overall impression of this collection simply because you are not happy with whatever retailer you were stiffed by. I understand your frustration, but an awful lot of people look to this site (and its star rating system, which I wish they would dispense with) for advice on what music is worth spending their hard earned dollars on. I also hope you eventually get the thing, because you will wish there was a sixth star to give it.

I have had this set for about 3 years, now, and I still play something from it, practically, on a daily basis. This is the source code, right here. If you could rate something 100 stars, I would rate this set 100 stars. Lots of very cool originals, that you never heard, that were later covered by other artists. For instance, you can imagine Janice Joplin, as a teenager, hearing Garnett Mim's, "Cry Baby", being inspired by it, and then covering it when she got her career going. LOVE this set! NEED a sequel, Rhino!!!

from the first burst to the last blast rhino serves it up until your ear hole runneth over. this heart warming, soul stirring collection contains almost every sonic memory from my mother's stack of 45's and quite a few cuts I'd never heard before. while the BEG discs are comprised of ballads SCREAM & SHOUT are full on party discs.put them all in your multi-disc player, hit shuffle and let the music take over your mind. if you're a fan of 60's soul you WILL NOT be disappointed. bless you rhino records

I think this is an excellent CD. The best compilation of oldies I've come across to date; most of the oldies compilations contain the same songs over and over again. The Beg, Scream & Shout! 60's Box Set is unique - it contains songs I've yet to come across on other oldies CD's. I have two oldies albums from the 60's that sound scratchy and I was unable to find a replacement album, CD or cassette on the internet. Well, I'm happy to say the Beg, Scream & Shout CD set contains at least 12 songs from my 2 albums, plus additional favorites I thought I'd never hear again. I have to applaud you for this one. The groups today do not sound as good as the groups from back in the day - the old school groups sang about LOVE and sang the songs with feeling.

If you're tired of hearing about the grapevine or sitting on the dock of the bay, this soulful box set is for you. Superstars are represented by left-field selections (i.e. Marvin Gaye's "Can I Get A Witness", The Supremes "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart"), while contributions from cult faves and one-hit wonders are treated with r-e-s-p-e-c-t (to quote another overplayed soul classic). And the idea of featuring only one song by each artist is brilliant.

I think this album is wonder full to just relax at the end of the day and get a good cuddle with you mate. just Lay and rest and enjoy life as it comes. I especially like the way the wonderful Vol number`1 start out the sries. Hope you enjoy too. My favorite song on the album is I'm your Puppet.

While a notoriously difficult and eccentric figure whose steadfast rejection of commercial trends and industry fashions kept him absent from the pop charts for decades at a stretch, Morrison nevertheless enjoyed a massive cult following that grew exponentially throughout the course of his lengthy and prolific career. Subject only to the whims of his own muse, his recordings cover extraordinary stylistic ground yet retain a consistency and purity virtually unmatched among his contemporaries, connected by the mythic power of his singular musical vision and his incendiary vocal delivery: spiralling repetitions of wails and whispers that bypassed the confines of language to articulate emotional truths far beyond the scope of literal meaning. George Ivan Morrison was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on August 31, 1945; his mother was a singer, while his father ardently collected classic American jazz and blues recordings. At 15, he quit school to join the local R&B band the Monarchs, touring military bases throughout Europe before returning home to form his own group, Them. Boasting a fiery, gritty sound heavily influenced by Morrison heroes like Ray Charles and Little Richard, Them quickly earned a devout local following and in late 1964 recorded their debut single "Don't Start Crying Now." The follow-up, an electrifying reading of Big Joe Williams' "Baby Please Don't Go," cracked the U.K. Top Ten in early 1965. Though not a major hit upon its original release, Them's Morrison-penned "Gloria" endures among the true classics of the rock pantheon, covered by everyone from the Doors to Patti Smith.           Very cool compilation series that has some of the world's best DJs selecting classic groovers from the back catalog of smaller Polygram labels -- like MPS, Brownswood, and Talking Loud. This volume was picked by Jazzanova of Compost Records fame, and it's a stellar batch of 21st Century grooves that brings together tracks from around the world in a swirling mix of music that had us sitting on the edges of our seats throughout the whole thing. The gamut is very wide, but Jazzanova manage to make the whole thing work through a masterful approach to seque. Titles include "Janela De Ouro" by Egberto Gismonti, "Yaad" by The Indian Jazz Trio, "Fedime's Flight" by Jazzanova, "You've Got It Bad Girl" by Quincy Jones, "Tema Teimoso" by Cal Tjader, "Statement" by George Duke, "We Who Are Not As Others" by 4 Hero, and even a great remix of "You're The Best Thing" by the Style Council. 74 minutes long, and a beautiful mix of music that perfectly sums up Brownswood's 21st Century soul approach!           Jazzanova is a production team out of Germany that has been making incredible music for some time. Combining influences from 60's & 70's eastern european jazz (ie. MPS/Saba labels )and modern electronic beat architecture, their productions are often beautifully complex numbers that are simply uncategorizable neo-modern dance jazz tunes. With this CD, Jazzanova essentially takes the listener on a journey through 4 "circles" of music by different artists. Each circle is meant to represent a separate style or soundscape. For instance, the first circle contains breezy "world jazz" songs primarily from the 70's while the second circle includes modern tracks that you might hear in today's clubs. Needless to say, the song selection is impeccable and the CD goes smoothly from lighthearted jazzy vocals to house beats to a deeper, moody down-tempo experience. This CD is a must for listeners who enjoy a wide variety of excellent music from all corners of the globe. In fact, all of the Phonophile releases are excellent and of a similar vein of musical styling. Please check it out -- you won't be disappointed.
