Fantastic!.......2003-11-25
Superb value. Meat just keeps on rocking!!.......2003-09-13
These are not the songs of young angst .. these are the songs of a man who has lived and loved .. I adore them. I believe they are as full of passion and meaning as any Meat has recorded, and they are delivered with a mature depth of passion that grips the soul. The title track and Did I Say That? are very powerful and emotive songs, and Do It!, Testify and Forever Young are so much more powerfully delivered by a man who's (forgive me Meat) walked a few miles around the block!
This album will reach out strongly to those of us who have a few miles on the clock .. but its today sound will also appeal to the young. Those of us who have been there, done that and got the Tshirt will readily appreciate the wonderful lyrics of this album, particularly Why Isn't That Enough?, You're Right, I Was Wrong, Man Of Steel and Love You Out Loud. But as has become the pattern with Meat Loaf's albums there is a theme, and those who have yet to travel the full distance of love's road will still relate to the passion expressed and delivered in every track.
Patti Russo, his long time singing partner, puts in a peerless performance as does his daughter Pearl Aday. Kasim Sulton brings his customary excellence in backing vocals and on bass guitar. Todd Rungren, who played such a pivotal role in the production of Bat Out of Hell, was responsible for the backing vocal arrangement on the title track. Composers include James Michael, Nikki Sixx, Jo Davidson, Kevin Griffin, Stephen Trask, Diane Warren, Rick Jude and Steve Balsamo. With Billy Rankin's Do It! Meat proves he can still rock with the best of them, and his vocals are exceptional in this fast paced and urgently delivered song. The cover of Forever Young is faultlessly delivered and conveys beautifully all the poignancy of Bob Dylan's lyrics.
This is an album of songs about love, the pursuit of which has many of us travelling a path of peaks and valleys This album mirrors them all with soul and passion. To quote just one of them, (Because Of You, which captures perfectly the excitement and wonder of falling in love) this IS real time .. this IS larger than life!!
Buy this album and fall in love all over again with beautifully written songs, delivered impeccably by one of the greatest Rock singers of all time. You will not be disappointed. The bonus tracks including video make it one of the best value albums I have ever bought, and worth it for the exceptional video of Did I Say That? alone.

A Rock N'Roll Classic!!!.......2003-04-29
COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER: Was written by James Michael and Nikki Sixx (from Motley Crue!) and is one of the best tracks on the album. It is a duet with Meats long-time stage partner, Patti Russo (and what a thrilling / awesome / beautiful voice she has! - where is her record deal?!?) She definitely goes the distance to help make this easily one of Meat Loafs greatest recordings! This is what you'd expect to hear from the great man - but is still a song that has to be heard to be believed!
DID I SAY THAT: Also written by the famous performer and songwriter, James Michael. This is another all-time classic in the making! It has all the hallmarks associated with Meat Loaf and is simply like being on an emotional rollercoaster! You won't know whether to jump up and down with the old air-guitar or just sit in a corner and cry your eyes out! Both lyrics and music composition do not come bigger or better than this.
WHY ISN'T THAT ENOUGH: This song starts very slow, and lyrically, it does seem almost quite weak. However, a couple of minutes into the song and Meat Loaf bursts into full operatic mode to deliver an almighty "Because I Want You. And I Need You. And I Love You. And I Want That To Be Enough." - making the wait all worthwhile. This song eventually goes very much on edge, and you'll hear it in your head for a long, long time after the CD stops spinning!
LOVE YOU OUT LOUD: For anyone expecting anything along the lines of "For Crying Out Loud" - please think again! This an upbeat song that dabbles with a few new sounds. Lyrically, it didn't make much of an impact on me, but its still pretty funky!
MAN OF STEEL: Has a pretty weird intro that almost sounds like a girl who is tripping-out! This is quite a slow song, which surfaces with some fiery moments. The one thing that makes this an awesome song happens after four minutes when Meat Loaf's daughter, Pearl, turns it around into a raunchy but emotional duet. Her voice is absolutely perfect here! It is disappointing that we only get to hear her for little more than a couple of minutes - I think she should have sang right the way through and that would've really been something!
INTERMEZZO: This is reflective pan pipe melody! (Yes, on a Meat Loaf album!) Auw, lovely!
TESTIFY: Opens with a southern preacher telling Meat he is going straight to fiery hell! Meat Loaf of course launches an attack back with another of my all time favourite Meat songs to have come from this album... This song, as you can imagine, is where rock n roll meets gospel - and Meat sounds right at home here! Testify has one of the most uplifting choruses that I've ever heard, and gives Meat the opportunity to sing the fastest vocals I think he has ever done! Its got the gospel choir complete with clapping - and a fantastic, almost spoken part, which is far removed from the song and begins: "Oh Boy Can You Hear Me?" WOW!!!
TEAR ME DOWN: From the Hedwig And The Angry Inch movie is a semi-biographical track for Meat Loaf - because it is like a spit in the face to all the people who have attacked him through his career. (I suggest reading his autobiography and then you'll understand!) And this song spits back at all the people who have done the same to me too, which is probably why I love it sooo much! It totally rocks! Very bold, very loud and full of teenage rebellion! The spoken part is so so cool! "Born Marvin Aday... he grew into a big man with a big voice. He sings big songs and has big hits - and you can try and tear him down!" You will love it!
YOU'RE RIGHT I WAS WRONG: Written by Diane Warren, this is one of those very courageous songs that only Meat Loaf could ever deliver. Just to hear him sing the simple lines, "I Made A Mistake. Im Sorry." Well, just make sure have got the tissues nearby!
BECAUSE OF YOU: Quite a simple but bold song really. Although the lyrics don't really pull me in, I just think it sounds really good! "This is big time. This is larger than life."
DO IT: Im glad that this song only takes up two and a half minutes on the album! I don't really know what's going on here? It sounds like something you'd hear playing from a dodgy back alleyway (but twenty years outdated). Perhaps it will grow on me.
FOREVER YOUNG: Oh my goodness! I cringed when I heard that this song was going to be included on the album because it has been covered so many times before! Ok, all I can say is that on this album, you will hear THE definitive version of Forever Young! Meat Loaf's voice is absolutely breathtaking, and Id say; his most awesome yet. You'll need those tissues again!
CRAZY ABOUT A MERCURY (?): This is a hidden track. You might remember Meat performing this track during his recent summer shows? Im really happy he decided to record it! This is another magical moment from the album! Pure, slamming, rock n roll!
BAT OUT OF HELL (LIVE): This is another hidden track, taken from the Storytellers album. This version of Bat has been my favourite version ever since I first heard it. (Meats vocals, John Meceli has re-worked the drums... etc etc). VERY fiery!
In conclusion: This is probably one of the coolest albums you will ever own! - and easily one of Meats finest! (But you might be disappointed if you are expecting another Bat Out Of Hell... at least the artist is moving on, right?) If you can live without the inclusion of Jim Steinman (I know its not easy, but remember that Meat and Jim have happened in the past - and you probably own those albums already!)
The first two tracks really stand out above the rest (and could almost pass for the Jim Steinman thing) and they were the two on here that were written by James Michael (one also with Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue!) - so in some ways it seems a shame that he didn't write more of the album. Meat Loaf himself has never sounded better! When I go back to school, I will be persuading my friends to buy this album instead of all the recycled trash that litters the chart these days.
#1 on the UK Rock Charts..........2003-04-29
Oh, and besides the announced hidden track, "Bat out of hell" storytellers live version, be sure to listen to the entire track of Forever Young for another good tune on a remarkable CD...:D

Meat Loaf is like a good wine..........2003-10-07
But back to the album at hand - this is by far one of the best CDs I've heard in a good long while. The opening track, "Couldn't Have Said It Better", is superb and well and truly deserving of the status of primary single in the US/UK/Aus, but if you ask me, the top song on the album is "Did I Say That?", which was the first song that the world heard from this album. Written by James Michael, it's simply impeccable and truly reminds me of classics like "Out Of The Frying Pan" and, especially, "Modern Girl".
"Why Isn't That Enough" also strikes me as a top class song - very similar to "Two Out Of Three" in many ways. I do have one complaint about it though, and it's not one I generally make about Meat Loaf's songs...it's a bit too short. It's my pick for next single.
"Love You Out Loud" is a brilliant live track, but comes off a little overdone on the record, but "Man Of Steel" suffers in no way from that problem. As much as Paul Jacobs and Sarah Durkee were the true force behind 'Bad Attitude' in '84, James Michael and Nikki Sixx are the power behind this CD, and they do a truly wonderful job with songs such as "Man Of Steel".
After some nice "penny whistles" as the booklet labels them on "Intermezzo", we hear a brief cut from "Crossroads" (You've got hellhounds on your tail!) before thundering into "Testify", which I was a little dissappointed by, but keeps the album upbeat. "Tear Me Down" is another track that would be brilliant live, followed immediately by "You're Right, I Was Wrong", written by Dianne Warren - who wrote Meat's two top 10 singles from 'Welcome To The Neighbourhood' - and it does seem like a practical pick for the next single.
"Because Of You" and "Do It!" are both really good songs in their own areas, though they pale next to songs like "Why Isn't That Enough" and "Tear Me Down" respectively, which are simply superior songs in similar styles.
Meat's cover of Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" is great - the closing songs to Meat Loaf albums are generally a good indicator of the quality of the album as a whole ("For Crying Out Loud", "Where Angels Sing" and "Lost Boys and Golden Girls" being the most note-worthy examples) and this one can mix it up with the best of them. The hidden song that is after "Forever Young" on track 11 isn't actually that good - for the purposes of this review, we'll ignore it.
I don't know what kind of bonuses come on the UK and US releases, but the Aussie release comes with a second disc with six brilliant live cuts (three from the new album - "Love You Out Loud", "Tear Me Down" and "Couldn't Have Said It Better" and three classics - "Life Is A Lemon", "I'd Do Anything For Love" and "Bat Out Of Hell").
To all the people that say Meat Loaf is nothing without Steinman...I pity your short-sightedness. Meat might be at his best with Jim, but people like Paul Jacobs, Dianne Warren and, now, James Michael, have proved that Meat doesn't need Steinman to be excellent. Long live Meat Loaf!
Now all we've got to do is wait for "Meat Loaf live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra" to get released on CD/DVD...
Meat's Never Given Us Better!.......2003-09-13
CHSIB IS a cracking album in my view. I love the newness, the freshness of it. I still love Bat Out Of Hell, which is a classic .. but this is new .. this is NOW .. Meat Loaf is justly proud of it, saying it's his best work since BOOH, and I think it has a maturity and depth which bear this out to the letter.
These are not the songs of young angst .. these are the songs of a man who has lived and loved .. I adore them. I believe they are as full of passion and meaning as any Meat has recorded, and they are delivered with a mature depth of passion that grips the soul.
