4 out of 5 stars 4 Stars: The First & Best of Their Three Mercury Albums.......2005-06-08

The Everly Brothers spent most of the 70's performing solo, which only proved - as is so often the case in close-knit artistic partnerships - how much each brother needed the other to sound his best. In 1983, enough water had flowed under the bridge for the two to resume performing and recording together. The tours, with a backup band led by guitarist Albert Lee, proved they could still sing well. The records were good efforts and Paul McCartney even penned a small hit single for them ("On the Wings of a Nightingale").

In 1984 The Everlys made a commercial and artistic comeback with 'EB 84.' With Dave Edmunds producing, Phil and Don brought their sound into the '80s while maintaining their trademark harmonies. In addition to the McCartney song, other highlights include Jeff Lynne's ethereal "The Story of Me" and three Don Everly originals. 'EB 84' proved the brothers had more to offer than simply nostalgia. - Richie Unterberger/J.P. Ollio, AMG

4 out of 5 stars A WELCOME REUNION.......2007-05-25

If there was a chance the Everly's were going to get back together after almost a decade and make a record, this certainly was the one they should've made and did. It's a solid effort with great songs, fine musicianship (without being over bearing) and of course, stellar vocals from Don and Phil. It's been said Dylan wrote LAY, LADY, LAY with the thought that the Everly Brothers should record it. Because of their acrimonious relationship, it took almost 15 years for that to happen. But here it is along with a McCartney contribution; ON THE WINGS OF A NIGHTINGALE and other assorted gems. My one knock and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is Dave Edmunds' production is a little heavy handed at times(it was the 80's afterall). With such pristine harmonies as those of the brothers Everly, who needs it?

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the CD reissue.......2007-04-28

This Mercury album was a wonderful reunion, resurgence, and return to form for the Everlys, who had an acrimonious breakup in the Seventies. Their harmonies were as great as ever, and if anything, the mellowness that came with age enriched their songs, tinged as many of them are with a wistful sadness. The choice of originals and covers was perfect; my favorites are "Why Worry" and "Lay Lady Lay."

3 out of 5 stars Ok Reunion Effort -- Sounds a Bit Dated Now.......2006-04-05

I like this record, a comeback effort produced by Dave Edmunds. Edmunds punches up the sound, the guitars bear his trademark sound, and there is a fine song penned by Paul McCartney as well as one by Jeff Lynne. What I find difficult when listening to it now, however, is the cheesy 80's synthesizers which back up most of the tracks. They distract from the fine songwriting and make you think The Thompson Twins are about to join them at any minute. If you can get past that it's worth picking up.

4 out of 5 stars so they were back an historic album !.......2005-05-20

for those who missed so much the everlys voices combination this has been a real delight.after 10 years apart, they were back together in a studio in 84 and we had a least a new album.Voices are still there but the sound changed a little mainly due to the band sound (English band), this is not a rock album, it's a medium tempo list of quite nice songs, the main one writen by Paul mc cartney. it does not reach the level of "Cathy's clown" or "sleepless nights" but the voices are so unique ...it's a good one for Everly collectors.Thierry

Product Description

In 1983, there was a great deal of buzz surrounding the Everly Brothers, who had not appeared together since their rather public breakup a decade earlier. A rapturously received reunion concert at Londons Royal Albert Hall set them on a path that would intersect with Mercury Records for three albums. On those three studio albums, the seminal twosome managed to update their trademark sound, while maintaining the qualities that had originally made them one of early rock 'n roll's most popular and influential acts. On The Wings Of A Nightingale: The Complete Mercury Studio Recordings (1984 1988) captures all of the magic of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers during their reunion honeymoon. Starting with EB 84, produced by longtime fan Dave Edmundswho had, in Rockpile, covered several Everly tunesthe Mercury era records brought Don and Phil's sound up to date while keeping the focus on their still-stirring voices. Paul McCartneywho had long acknowledged the Everlys formative influence on the Beatles sound contributed the buoyant On The Wings Of A Nightingale, kicks off EB 84 on an inspired note, and it became the Everly Brothers first Billboard chart single since 1967. On 1986s Born Yesterday, again produced by Edmunds, the Everlys offer distinctive readings of such well-chosen cover tunes as Arms Of Mary, originally by Englands Sutherland Brothers, Bob Dylans Abandoned Love, Mark Knopflers Why Worry, and Sam Cookes standard You Send Me. Don and Phil assumed the production reins for their third and final Mercury album, 1988s Some Hearts... Two classic sets of rock n roll harmonists meet on a version of the Beach Boys Don't Worry Baby, with the Beach Boys themselves guesting. The album sessions also produced an unreleased performance of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Jim Steinman composition A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste. It finally sees the light of day on this collection.

3 out of 5 stars Convenient.......2006-06-29

It's nice to have the 3 albums the Everly's made in the 1980s on a 2 disk set.

But the xtras (bonus tracks) are very few.

The compilers of this set put 2 albums on the first disk, and the 3rd album and one bonus track on the second disk, so it is considererably shorter. And since many think that the 3rd album was not all that great, it makes the second disk on this Hip-O collection rather weak.

A convenient package, but primarily for completists

5 out of 5 stars essential music - should be more easily obtainable.......2005-11-27

This is some of the best pop music that's even been produced. I look forward to seeing this stuff back in-print, and reasonably priced.*

* I SHOULD note that Hip-O Select told me that this release comes in a special cardboard case. Oooooooo...
