The directing debut of Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace adapts the Alexandre Dumas classic for Leonardo di Caprio and--well, at least it doesn't hit an iceberg. The first full score by sometime Hans Zimmer collaborator Glennie-Smith is one of those instances of a composer outwitting his film material. Utilizing the fusion of the electronic, symphonic and choral music familiar from Zimmer's best work, Glennie-Smith manages the impressive feat of sounding classical and contemporary in the same moment. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Wallace dons the mask whilst Glennie-Smith tames the iron.......2006-03-26
Without Nick Glennie-Smith, we would not have been blessed such splendid work as "We Were Soldiers" or "The Rock," and although his work is not in such an ample supply as, say, John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith, I nevertheless find his music extraordinary. If given the choice, "We Were Soldiers" would likely be the one as its simplicity throughout the film with the two foremost themes not only helps set the bar for the movie (as more and more lately, the score had a tendency to guide the film, rather than the other way around), but that's saved for another time. For now, "The Man in the Iron Mask" strikes so deeply that if listeners will allow themselves to be moved simply with their ears, I find it genuinely difficult not to be taken somewhere with such musical fervor as this.
If nothing else, put yourselves in the seventeenth-century surroundings. Open your minds for the baroque templates used here not only to exemplify the time period Glennie-Smith was given to create in, but also to aid the structure that it was then. Granted, he grows a shy too dramatic through the pivotal scenes in the movie, but always in the end he struck my nerve with the "magnificent valor," indeed, that was displayed during those essential climatic instances.
The central theme, which was, of course, most frequently adhered in track thirteen, "All For One," where at that point in time in the film, the four musketeers and Philippe, D'Artagnan's other son (twin brother of [King] Louis XIV) charge forth into the heavily-armed group of musketeers, into what they all thought was their inescapable kismet. "But if we must die - if `we must die,' let it be like this," as D'Artagnan said just before the charge. While incorporating Vivaldi's work in-and-out during the movie, I have to say it was this theme, together with the more melodious counterpart between D'Artagnan and Queen Mother Anne, that never went unnoticed because without it, and I hate to state this but it's the truth, the scene where the four musketeers - and a son - went running to their prospective deaths would not have meant as much without the right prehensile tone. I respect Glennie-Smith's decision to make it so thespian because in that type situation, little less could have been expected.
When it comes down to it, you really have to ask yourself what you thought of the movie and for me; I enjoyed the film for its focal moments. Sure, the screenplay was a little off-centre with the dialogue, and as I have read through the literary edition, I'd say Randall Wallace could have kept more to the story at hand, but the motion picture, as a whole, was delightful enough. The acting was superb, predominantly on John Malkovich's, Jeremy Irons' and Gérard Depardieu's behest, and I can watch this film a number of times without feeling like I wasted anything. Even Leonardo DiCaprio, whose fame sent many of the teenaged girl throbs to see this film, did exceptional in his role as twins and I couldn't have asked for much more on his behalf.
To continue, let me just say that if you enjoyed the film, you'll likely agree that Nick Glennie-Smith's judgment to make the score as such was a fine idea, and furthermore I pray you took pleasure in listening to the man's work; for those few who did not like the movie, chances are you'll like the score even less. You'll call it tawdry, senseless and in all probability, "Hollywoodized," and in that sense you'll be wrong. Perhaps the picture itself could have been better, but for all the film's worth, Glennie-Smith, I think, did his best at creating the world Randall Wallace fashioned and stuck to the guidelines on not blemishing the job and making it another Michael Kamen tragedy in "The Three Musketeers," starring Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen. Though I cherish Kamen's work, may he rest peacefully, I really did not like "The Three Musketeers" at all, but that comes to little surprise as the film itself was a complete disgrace to Alexandre Dumas' work.
Anyway, yes. My opinion is the score was well composed and conducted, and while I haven't seen much of Nick Glennie-Smith lately, I look forward to hearing more of his evermore honing skill in the art.
(Plus, for those keen to chronology, like myself, you might be dismayed to know this soundtrack does not follow track-by-track as the film went by, and instead goes with, well, some order I haven't yet figured out. All the music is here, mind you, only not in the order seen onscreen. Don't expect any sequential arrangement.)
One of the best soundtracks I've ever heard!.......2005-04-21
Although The Man in The Iron Mask wasn't the best movie ever made, the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard. Nick Gelnnie-Smith does a wonderful job capturing the mood of this movie. The music is not only beautiful, but wonderfully orchestrated, brilliantly composed, and beautifully played. The soundtrack, without a doubt, far exceeds the movie.
Great soundtrack makes movie even better, yet stands alone.......2005-03-15
Mr. Glennie-Smith's incredible soundtrack takes this mediocre movie to the next level. The spirit (and action) of the film is captured so well in this score. The themes are played out and used eloquently; repeated but not overwhelmingly forced upon the listener. There is a lot going on, but these songs are easy on the ears and mind - a wonderful listen while not impeding on other aspects in your life.
Overall - a must-have soundtrack!
amazing.......2004-10-13
Awesome soundtrack.. belongs up there with the best of Hans Zimmer and John Williams and Howard Shore!! All, and I mean all the tracks on the CD are good, I didn't have to put any on skip.
A score made of solid iron.......2003-02-26
It's nice to see Nick Glennie-Smith break from co-composing scores with Hans Zimmer and compose his own scores. I wish he would do it more often because this score really shines. The music consists of 2 parts: quick tempo, upbeat action cues and more laid back, slower and softer, romantic music. "Surrounded", "King for a King", and "All For One" are the best cues with the heroic main theme played in full force. The theme slightly resembles the theme from The Rock, which makes sense because Glennie-Smith co-composed that score with Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson-Williams. These 3 cues feature strong brasses, powerful percussion, electric guitars, synths, and a deep male voice choir, which was used a lot in The Rock. A great rousing theme, which represents the second type of music I was talking about, is found in "Heart of a King", with a nice flute solo building into a full orchestral delight. "The Moon Beckons" also contains a nicely played flute solo, playing a slightly mournful tune. "A Taste of Something" contains a lovely string theme, while "The Pig Chase" (sounds like a Springer episode title) is a fun and enjoyable woodwind and percussion delight. "The Masked Ball" is a great period piece played in a Handel like fashion. However, I was disappointed about the end of this track, which ended abruptly as in the film. In the end, this score is well balanced and an enjoyable delight. High, high recommendations for this one.

Not That Bad..........2006-04-25
Pete Townshend's musical "The Iron Man" is based on a story by a man named Ted Hughes. Inside the CD is the story and the lyrics. I read a few of the lyrics but none of the story, I wanted to feel the music first before knowing the story. This musical is like a movie told in music, it's got singers playing characters and certain characters telling stories. As of this writing, I still have not read the story but have gathered some of it. Now I want to say, this is a great CD and it's really interesting. All the songs, as songs and not as chapters in a story, are good. They're catchy and have good vocals; Some of them sound like old pop songs, which is a bit cheesy, but it's still good. Here's the tracks and some comments on them:
1. Pete Townshend & Deborah Conway "I Won't Run Any More"-5/5-Good vocals by Conway.
2. John Lee Hooker "Over the Top"-5/5-John Lee Hooker (The Iron Man) the man man! This song is really cool, although the vocals that sing "over the top we go" are kind of annoying.
3. Simon Townshend "Man Machines"-4/5-Interesting 43 second interlude sang by who I believe to be Pete Townshend's son.
4. The Who "Dig"-5/5-Roger Daltrey sounds a little bit different from the "Baba O'Reilly" days, but still cool.
5. Pete Townshend "A Friend is a Friend"-5/5-A really good song with great lyrics.
6. John Lee Hooker "I Eat Heavy Metal"-5/5-Awesome. The brooding sound at the end is really good too.
7. Pete Townshend, Deborah Conway, & Chyna "All Shall Be Well"-5/5-The best song on here, so far...
8. Pete Townshend "Was There Life"-5/5-Great.
9. Nina Simone "Fast Food"-5/5-It's about an alien in the guise of a dragon wanting human flesh to eat or she will destroy the plant. Interesting story and really good song. Simone sings it perfectly.
10. Pete Townshend "A Fool Says..."-5/5-Interesting lyrics, really...
11. The Who "Fire"-5/5-This is a great song and it's not written by Townshend.
12. Cyna, Pete Townshend, & Nicole Emmannuel "New Life/Reprise"-5/5-Very good, really cool song.
There you go. I know this is an old CD and I haven't listened to any of Pete Townshend's recent stuff, but his lyrical talent has grown a lot since his days in The Who. The lyrics to "A Fool Says..." are really good and so are a few of the other ones here. His guitar playing is still great and he's a top notch singer. This is really an awesome CD.
GRADE: A
The Sh** Man...........2006-01-23
....
Okay, Spinal Tap joke made, I move on. Awful attempt by Pete to do broadway, he doesn't even seem to try here. The lack of energy or enthusiasm that hurt White City is destructive here. These songs weren't even worthwhile any wise, while White City did have good songs. An unredemable effort, his worst album in his entire career.
The duality of materialism (Iron Man) and hedonism (dragon) .......2005-01-19
I like Iron Man a lot... I remember till now the very first day I listen to... that sound so beautiful, kinda church thing, evangelical stuff... maybe for that reason people don't like it... the sound ain't pop or rock, more to jazz, blues and even gospel sometimes... but great songs there... beginning with the epic song I Won't Run Any More (great power chords there), the funny Over the Top (with John Lee Hooker), the sweetness of Friend Is a Friend, the electronic power (great synthesizer work) of I Eat Heavy Metal (with John Lee Hooker again) passing through the beautiful gospel All Shall Be Well, the romantics of Was There Life and Fool Says (great acoustic work there), the super atonal and vanguardist Fast Food (with Nina Simone), the power trio of Fire and ending with the gospel New Life/Reprise... I like very much, it's beautiful, it's different, and has deep meaning, rationalizing about the western societies... the duality of materialism (the Iron Man) and hedonism (the dragon) and how to survive healthy to this antagonism, exerting temperance (when the Iron Man defeats the dragon). Summarizing, I love Iron Man.
Has he lost his mind?.......2004-11-06
This is Pete Townshend's musical adaptation of the Ted Hughes children's story of the same name. Unfortunately, the story as told through the songs doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense. In fact, you have to read the liner notes to make heads or tails of the storyline. Aside from the unclear story, the songs themselves aren't very memorable. Not bad, just not that great. Although this album is based on a children's story, I don't think children will enjoy it at all. The movie The Iron Giant is a much better adaptation of the same source material. Watch that instead of listening to this album.
Whimsical childrens' story.......2004-07-31
A lot of people who don't like this album seem not to grasp that it was based on a childrens' story by British poet laureate Ted Hughes, not intended as a serious mature album for adults. If I didn't know that, I too would probably rate it lower. There are some delightful songs on here, but the rest, even for kiddy fare, fall short. The best songs on here are "Was There Life," "I Won't Run Anymore," "A Friend Is a Friend," "Dig," and the two John Hooker numbers, "I Eat Heavy Metal" and "Over the Top." "A Fool Says" is a very pretty song, but too short! Of those songs, "Was There Life" is the absolute best; the rest are fun and well-crafted, but just sound mediocre in comparison to Pete's other solo stuff, even considering that he doesn't sing all of the songs.
"All Shall Be Well," "Fire," and "New Life/Reprise" are also listenable, but not as enjoyably-mediocre as the abovementioned songs. The lyrics on the lattermost song are really corny, and the Who remake of "Fire" falls way short of living up to the frantic energy of the original version by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. "Man Machines" is pointless and only 42 seconds long, sung by Pete's little brother Simon, who is a talented musician in his own right. By far, though, the worst number is "Fast Food," sung by Nina Simone. This has got to be one of the worst songs Pete ever wrote, even lamer than "Squeeze Box." It's sad, because the lyrics are supposed to be frightening and sung by an evil space dragon, not silly and mortifying.
The songs do a good job of telling the story about the young boy Hogarth and how the Iron Man goes from feared monster who has to be trapped in a pit to a conquering hero who saves the world and millions of children from the evil space dragon, despite how mediocre and cringe-worthy some of the lyrics are. I suppose someone in the target audience for this record would have a different reaction, taking it at face value instead of judging it against Pete's other work.

Iron man: Pete Townshend.......2007-06-21
Dig! is the song who Pete play with the Who, you can listen here John Lee Hooker, this is a great cd.
caveat emptor.......2006-12-13
Some customer reviews here may prove misleading to some other customers. While Iron Man is a perfectly enjoyable and well executed piece of Townshend work, it is a minor one. Who and Townshend fans need to understand that this is a piece of musical theater based on children's literature. It features several guest vocalists and only one track that can really stand alone (Friend is a Friend).
Worth A Listen for Any Who Fan..........2006-09-23
If you are a fan of The Who than this is definately an album you should have. It is a Pete Townshend solo album, but it's also contains the first new Who songs after they broke up following It's Hard. The songs are Dig and Fire, and these along with Pete's solo songs make for a very enjoyable musical experience. It is a concept album, so like some of The Who's other work, it tells a story through the music, which I have always been a big fan of. I think it is one of Pete's finest albums and a rare gem for Who fans.

Nice idea, but not quite hitting home.......2007-06-29
Sabbath's music interpreted by this quartet seems a lot more repetitive and ordinary than I would have thought it would. Maybe another quartet could give it more depth. But what do I know? It's a nice novelty - I recommend buying it if you have been listening to Sabbath as much as I have. But, I have to agree with the fellow who pointed out the hack assembly line quality of this quartet series. Also, I am not sure they picked the more orchestral Sabbath songs to perform (i.e. Killing Yourself to Live, or Spiral Architect).
Can you find parts for this?.......2006-08-12
I have been a Black sabbath fan for a long time. I was in Orchestra for nine years. I was so glad to find this CD on amazon. I haven't bought it yet, but I was wondering if you can buy, the violin score (part) for black sabbath? I would love to be able to play these songs myself.
Valiant Experiment.......2006-03-08
Pure classical strings: Violin, Cello, Viola, Contrabass. It's suitable for elevator & dentist music. Not bad but the music is lacking body, it feels empty and needs either more instruments or a deeper more pronounced bass. The high pitch strings do tend to get on your nerves after a while. The artist did a decent job on the songs but I don't think Black Sabbath comes out right with strings. The CD has 10 songs of which 9 are Sabbath and 1 is an original composition named Sacrament (short but ok). The CD really needed more songs to give a better incentive to purchase. Paranoid and Sabbath Bloddy Sabbath are my favorites in string.
Sabbath's Music Lends Itself Perfectly To This Tribute.......2004-10-02
Black Sabbath's music lends itself so perfectly to this kind of a tribute, you can't help but think maybe Ozzy, Tony, Geezer, and Bill planned this from the beginning. Not likely, but still. This is one of the most natural sounding String Tributes out there. The slow, plodding, doom-like riffs translate amazingly to a string quartet. Check out the sound clips of Electric Funeral and Iron Man for the best examples. Even Paranoid was impressive, and that's not really a song you would expect to translate very well. In all, a great pickup Ozzy & Sabbath fans, both old and new.
ELEVATOR MUSIC.......2003-08-28
This recording is very disappointing as far as adding a new exciting edge to Sabbath's great tunes. I'm 40 years old and have listened to Sabbath since my early teens. This is nothing but elevator music done on an assembly line. The main part of the strings are playing the tune while another one plays out the voice pattern over top.Real tacky and not very original.Once I recieved the CD I found an order form for the String Quartet's other cheesey renditions-Tributes to Queen,Zeppelin, U2, etc not to mention tributes to Bjork and Enya (who the hell are they?).This sound was like listening to castrated Sabbath music. There was no way to build up any dynamics or power using these instruments and they can't even begin to capture the raw emotion that makes Sabbath's music stand out. I love good string work but this left me wanting to reach through the speakers so I could grab those violins and smash them into a million pieces. As a hard core Sabbath fan I would strongly recommend buying the CD by Rondellus called Sabbatum if you want a unique attack on Sabbath music. It is very well done on medieval instruments and sung in Latin .

Product Description
Inside a newly built recording studio nestled in the suburban hinterlands of his native Detroit, multi-platinum-selling rap star PROOF fusses over a desktop computer containing snippets from his upcoming debut solo album, Searching 4 Jerry Garcia. Pointing and clicking furiously, the lanky MC glances back and forth from the monitor to the friends who have arrived to listen to tracks from his newest musical offering. He frowns at the screen, then grins an apology to his audience. I got love for ya, you know I do, he says, turning back to the Macintosh, but I need to make sure this sounds right. You know me. I cant let you hear it if it doesnt sound right. PROOF refuses to take his work lightly, even in the confines of his own studio, even among the staff and supporters whove cheered his long climb to rap super stardom. He wont showcase any less than his best, not even in a leisurely sitting. A decade and a half since the member of the hit group D-12 began his ascent into the spotlight, PROOF figures he still has plenty to
well
prove. I want to show that you can talk about more than one thing in hip-hop. Rapping about cars and your Rolex is played out, says the MC. You can be different and still be successful. For this, he stands as living PROOF. Collaborating with D12s DJ, Salam Wreck, Proof rips though track after track produced by some of the top Beat-smiths in the game. Producers Eminem, Mr. Porter, Reef, Sicknotes, and Salam Wreck himself, all lend Proof a helping hand with the production. This mixtape really shows a more serious and dark-side of Proof then what people will hear on the upcoming Searching 4 Jerry Garcia album, which is due to hit streets this summer, remarks DJ Salam Wreck while planted in front SSL 8000G at FBT Studios. Being the guide through this tour, Salam scratches, mixes and manipulates the music from start to finish.

On his sixth session as a leader for Criss Cross Jazz, One For All trumpeter Jim Rotondi pushes the hard bop envelope, broadening the music's horizons with a new quintet that utilizes veteran vibraphonist Steve Nelson in place of the usual piano. Criss Cross. 2006.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing... 'nuff said!.......2006-07-21
To start off with Jim Rotondi has already distinguished himself as one of the premire trumpet voices of this generation. He is comfortable in any situation, which shows given his choices of group arrangements throughout his discography. This album stands out as one of his best efforts. His ideas are clear and clean. The album starts off with the tune Iron Man, which is based on the changes to Tune Up, and any serious jazz musician knows Tune Up! I highly recommend the tune Iron Man for great transcription material. Other standouts on this recording are Embraceable You, and old standard to be sure, showcasing Jim's beautiful flugel along with Steve Nelson's smooth vibes, Digit a angular up-beat romp, note the fantastic drumwork of Bill Stewart, Mr. Craignos is a funky bluesy trip, and catchy as hell! And as usual Jim leaves you wanting more with the tune Power.
I can't say enough about this album it has a bit of everything. Jim put together a fantastic Group of musicians including, Jimmy Greene, Steve Nelson, Doug Weiss, and Bill Stewart. If you like any of Jim's other recordings don't miss this one, It's well worth the money and certainly worth the time... 'nuff said.

Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20
I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.
Great recording!.......2003-09-22
There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.
Good and Bad.......2000-04-09
I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.
This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11
I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.
Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.
As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.
