Much Better than Average Donovan Compilation.......2006-07-20
Usually I don't much like the Donovan compilation records that mix the Pye stuff with the Mickey Most and later stuff. Donovan went through major changes when he changed labels and signed with CBS's Epic label. However, they had the good sense to use the Pye versions of "Catch the Wind" and "Colours" here, with three other of those early songs, and you know what, on this record the combination isn't offensive. I think it's because they've run the songs in chronological order. Plus they used all good songs, well "Jennifer" is a bit sappy, but still this is a darned find disc and the recording is darned fine too. Another compilation I've gotta give five stars too.
Best Single-Disc Offering.......2004-05-04
The best single-disc retrospective of Donovan, this CD gives the listener an excellent overview of his diverse musical and artistic genius. The sound-quality is top-notch! It has a groovy cover and booklet as well.
Donovan is cool!!.......2004-02-15
My boyfriend bought this for me because I was always singing "Mellow Yellow". I'd heard "Sunshine Superman" and "Atlantis", too, but I didn't realize how many other good songs Donovan has. I recommend this for anyone who likes sixties pop music.
Looking through crystal spectacles.......2000-11-21
Yes, Donovan's music does tend to be cute, spacey, and at times lyrically vacuous, but he WAS responsible for four Grade A slabs of acid rock: "Season of the Witch", "Sunshine Superman", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", and "Goo Goo Barabajagal". Throw in two fine folkie numbers ("Catch the Wind", "Colours"), and numerous other pop/psychedelic pleasantries, and you've got a worthwhile collection.
Although Epic/Legacy has finally brought their US "Greatest Hits" up to date, this 23 track import remains the single Donovan disc to own. In addition to the usual suspects, it includes gems like the snarly "Hey Gyp", the hazey-eyed "Trip", and the goofy "Poor Cow". The sound is quite lovely also. Just don't spend too much time pondering the lyrics...
