Customer Reviews:
Right down the middle.......2007-02-08
With the exception of Book of Dreams, there isn't a bad song on this album! Several mediocre ones (Big Muddy; Leap of Faith; Local Hero; Souls of the Departed), but several I like (title song; Living Proof; If I Should Fall Behind; Better Days; My Beautiful Reward). Really, I don't see why this is so despised when eighth-rate works like Nebraska and Tunnel of Love are lauded: it's no Born to Run, and it's sheer mediocrity, but I'd take mediocrity over awfulness any day.
A triumph.......2006-09-21
If you read through the various reviews here you might get the impression that Bruce's "Happy" album is a lighthearted trip among the fluffy clouds but that wouldn't be accurate. Springsteen isn't some dreamy-eyed fella sitting peacefully in a garden full of fragrant flowers here, he's a guy emerging from a culvert covered in blood, sweat and tears who is relieved to find the light at the end of a dark tunnel. His voice is so great on this album, revealing a man who has rediscovered his faith in love. Overall it doesn't contain the musical power that he pulls out of the E Street Band but his emotion-filled vocals have never been more piercing and effective. These are terrific songs of triumph and hope and overcoming heartache through introspective perseverance.
The Test of Time.......2006-02-24
We're approaching 14 years now since this album was released. I can still remember the day I unwrapped it. I was a freshman in high school, timidly trying to straddle the line between the various musical factions of the day: R&B and Grunge. I knew there had to be something better, it just took a "Leap of Faith" to reach it.
I like to think my musical taste got better. These days, sorting my iPod by play count yields a pretty eclectic mix: The Shins, The White Stripes, DELTRON3030, Liz Phair, and Marty Robbins are all at or near the top. And, of course, the entire track list of Lucky Town is right up there with them.
I venture to say that I've listened to this album at least once every month in the last fourteen years, and often many more times. Every time I do, I'm 15 again, dreaming about a life yet to be lived with the kind of optimism and naivete that we adults take drugs to experience again.
Without gushing on and on about this album, I would like to thank The Boss for this often-overlooked gift. Four short months ago, my wife and I spent just under three minutes stumbling over each other in front of all our friends and family. Since the day I first heard it 14 years ago, "If I Should Fall Behind" was forever linked in my mind with what a marriage should be. In my mind, no other song has come close to pairing such a plaintive request with such a heartfelt assurance, intertwining them in a way that no one--even the coldest-footed groom--could misunderstand.
Buy this album. I promise you won't be sorry.
ME.
Bruce covers a handful of moods very effectively.......2005-12-17
I agree with Glenn J Wiener, with the music fan from Minneapolis, and with any others who say that this album is underrated. It is! I liked it a lot when it was released, and I still do. The songs are strong and the playing, while perhaps lacking some of the personality of the E Street band, is nevertheless workman-like and effective enough. And Bruce, who was obviously in a restless state when this (and Human Touch) was released, is in very good voice. Speaking personally, my wife and I used the beautiful If I Should Fall on a wedding mix CD we made to give to our guests. It's a gorgeous tune, as is Beautiful Reward. And songs like Better Days, Lucky Town and Leap of Faith sound triumphant. So it's a record that covers a handful of moods, but covers them very effectively, something Bruce Springsteen can do so very well.
YO BOSS! UP OFF YOUR BUTT & GET BUSY REMASTERING!.......2004-11-21
Hey, BRRRRRUUUUUCCCE!
What's the deal? Just about every major Top 40 artist has had their catalogs sonically updated EXCEPT YOURS.
Why can we buy the "Tracks" editions, and get glorious HDCD-encoded sound, but "Town" sounds like it's coming out an AM radio?
OK, you did your best, but Dubya's back in the White House for the next four years, and Kerry's home in his underwear watching the Weather Channel. You should have plenty of time on your hands now... GET BUSY!
Let's see some remastering!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Town is a wonderful show.......2004-10-25
This is a terrific show. It has a famous composer, great tunes and a good, upbeat story. Why it has so thoroughly faded from memory is a question that puzzles me greatly.
The orchestrations are attributed to another individual, but Bernstein must have taken some substantial role in their creation, for large parts of "Wonderful Town" resemble only one other musical, "West Side Story."
Rosalind Russell is the star here, and rightly so. She sings--or rather croaks--her material very well, indeed. Only in "Swing" is she overmatched by the musical requirements and even then she fights them to a draw.
Edith Adams is very good, too, as Eileen. I think of her as Edie Adams, a sixties icon, wife of comedian Ernie Kovacs, mayhem-minded member of the Nairobi Trio and super-sexy pitchwoman for White Owl Cigars. I had no idea that she had also starred on Broadway. It was a pleasant surprise to find her here.
The men in the lead parts sing in that typical Broadway growl: perfect diction and lousy tone. They are endearingly awful. And I mean that in the best possible sense.
Five stars, no doubt about it!
Light and lively musical comedy .......2004-08-07
The first cast album of WONDERFUL TOWN sounds even better than ever in Decca's latest remastering. The sound is still somewhat flat (as are all Decca albums from the 40s/50s) but the Decca engineers have worked wonders on the 50 year old tapes making them sound as good as possible. Rosalind Russell was a perfect choice to play the acerbic Ruth. She doesn't have much of a singing voice but the songs were tailored to her limited range and she makes the character come alive. Edith Adams sounds properly winsome as her sister Eileen. In the supporing roles, Jordan Bentley comes off best as Wreck, but George Gaynes makes for a ponderous, somehwat stuffy Bob Baker.
In terms of album production, Decca eliminated the Overture and some of the dance music, and re-arranged "Christopher Street" to eliminate the spoken vignettes. Otherwise the score is presented in a faithful aural re-creation. The booklet offers a detailed synopsis to guide you through the score.
The bonus tracks are six songs from ON THE TOWN originally recorded when that show was playing on Broadway. This is NOT the definitive recording of ON THE TOWN. For that you need the 1960 album avaialble on Sony. But, the excerpts heard here provide an enjoyable bonus.
a must-have recording for REAL Broadway fans.......2002-12-26
This marvellous new re-issue of WONDERFUL TOWN is a must-have for Broadway buffs. In fact, this is really two albums in one, as it also contains the rare 1945 studio recording of ON THE TOWN as a bonus!
The story is based on the play "My Sister Eileen", written by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov; as well as the stories written by Ruth McKenney. The play was later turned into a successful Columbia film starring Rosalind Russell (as Ruth Sherwood) and Janet Blair as Eileen. Several years later Columbia released a musical version (following the success of WONDERFUL TOWN) which starred Janet Leigh and Betty Garrett.
WONDERFUL TOWN originally starred Rosalind Russell (repeating her film role) as Ruth and Edith 'Edie' Adams as Eileen. The cast also included George Gaynes (GIGI, 'Punky Brewster') as the romantic male lead.
The score by Betty Comden and the late Adolph Green is gorgeous, and features the comical "100 Easy Ways", the lilting "A Little Bit in Love" and the showstopping "Conga!" and "Wrong-Note Rag".
No Broadway-recording collection is complete without the original cast of this landmark musical.
This re-issue from the superb Decca Broadway range also includes the rare 1945 set of ON THE TOWN, which featured original cast-members Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Nancy Walker singing their songs from the show, with Mary Martin singing "Lonely Town" and "Lucky to Be Me".
Highly-recommended.
Leonard Bart-stein? Listen for yourself...........2002-09-23
Leonard Bernstein never erred on the side of subtlety, and this original-cast album contains two of his most enjoyable essays in musical near-mayhem: "Christopher Street" and "The Wrong Note Rag." The former is vastly like the theme music to "The Simpsons," and the listener can decide for himself how much of a coincidence this is or isn't. "The Wrong Note Rag" uses the tritone of the scale and a varied meter to make life difficult for the singers and anyone trying to count along. Unlike so many send-ups of the 1920s, this song ingenioulsy captures the musical and lyrical feel of novelty numbers like 1924's "Fascinating Rhythm"--or, better yet, the slightly later "Crazy Rhythm." A parody of the 1920s that shows any sense of the 1920s is a rare item, indeed. "Wonderful Town" is an interesting, enjoyable, and valuable historical piece, and I can only imagine what later performers did with it. I don't want to know.
Quality over quantity.......2002-05-19
Yes, the original 1953 cast recording of "Wonderful Town" may not be the most complete cast recording of the hit musical BUT I would wholeheartedly reccommend this CD over any other version. Why? Because of its original cast members and its original orchestrations! Rosalind Russell is peerless as Ruth Sherwood (I consider her version of "One Hundred Easy Ways" one of the funniest songs in musical theatre history) and Edie Adams shines through radiantly. Listen to her sing "A Little Bit In Love" to understand what I'm talking about. Also, the original orchestrations gtive this CD more vibrance than any of the later incarnations INCLUDING the 1999 studio recording, which to me sounds too mechanical and the British orchestrator doesn't seem to get the rhythms right. The original cast recording is A MUST for the true theatre fan, abridged score or not

Customer Reviews:
Not such a great sampling...........2001-01-21
Some of these songs are really stretching for a romantic mood. Especially some of the On the Town songs. It's not that they're not good though....All of this music is from other CDs that have been already been released. Don't limit yourself to just these songs. Go ahead and buy the other recordings. Deutsche Grammophon did the On the Town recording along with West Side Story and Candide. I'd recommend a different recording of West Side Story though. The one of Wonderful Town is the kinda newly released complete version of the musical. It's a good but expensive one. Also, this recording left out some of THE greatest love songs from Peter Pan (Dream of Me, Peter Peter), Trouble in Tahiti (Well of all people, There is A Garden, Finale), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Seena, Lud's Wedding), and Quiet Place (There is so much, too much). I think this recording, though okay, is a stumbling block to finding out about the real Bernstein saga of musicals. And if you are still getting this recording, the sound quality is really good. West Side Story is done by the masters of the opera so they sing it that way. Candide is operetic too, but then again it is an operetta. That's about all I have to say on this recording.
nice but operatic.......2000-02-23
This is a nice collection of Bernstein miscellany. Note however that the West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide are the "operatic" versions, with Te Kanawa and Carreras, Von Stade and Hampson, and Jerry Hadley, respectively. Bernstein conducts WSS and Candide and Tilson Thomas OTT. The surprise is the bits from Wonderful Town, which was recorded on JAY, not DG like the others. Featuring Ron Raines and Rebecca Luker, it's probably the most authentically "Broadway" of this set.

Customer Reviews:
thought this would be great.......2007-03-17
Beautiful music, beautiful voice-but unfortunately mismatched, and poorly recorded- "opera" style of delivery detracts from enjoyment- and recording poor quality in that it alternately blares out and drops to inaudible- second CD really poor- looks like one thrown in for good measure.
I am not musically trained nor a critic but I have loved these songs for many years and this was a disappointment.

Customer Reviews:
The Depths of Artistry.......2006-12-18
It is hard to imagine anything more precious and cloying than this collection of popular songs sung by a person whose interpretations so infect her vocal techniques as to come out totally laughable. One could use this as a party record except that after a few songs one has to stop listening out of boredom and anger....
