Customer Reviews:
Good but not great.......2005-08-02
I wanted to give this a 3.5 star rating but it wasn't one of the options. Don't let that put anyone off buying this cd. It's just that Al has done much better work (You Never Know Who Your Friends Are/Easy Does It/New York City (You're A Woman/Black Coffee). This is probably the weakest of his albums and mostly down to song selection which is usually Al's strong point when it comes to covers. The Dylan cover is sung in falsetto & doesn't work too well. The arrangement is good and dynamic but it still seems to lack some edge. Jimmy Cliff's Please Tell Me Why is a little dull. It's ok and nothing more. Al's own songs are what saves the album. Let Your Love Shine and Love Trap are both excellent. The Smokie cover is also great and the album ends strongly with Childhood's End. Al's Fly On is very lightweight and it is in fact the first half of the album that lets the project down. The title track is interesting and features some great piano playing from Al. The Mayfield cover Monkey Time is also very good. But it's those three songs The Man In Me/Fly On/Please Tell Me Why that, although not bad, are not up to Al's usual high standard.
