Angèle Dubeau is a remarkable violinist, and here, she and her all-woman, 12-strong (including herself) group, La Pieta, tackle some of the showiest---and most interesting---virtuoso pieces composed or transposed for solo violin and strings, in various combinations, and occasionally featuring a piano. The violin tone at the start of Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre has a warmth which stays with us throughout the disc, despite the fact that so many of the pieces are razzle-dazzle. Hearing the delicious can-can from the overture to Orpheus in the Underworld so thrillingly played, with as much emphasis on the piano as the violin, is a treat, and the "Fire dance" from El amor brujo positively throbs. There's great skill---even daring---in the Tartini "Devil's Trill" sonata and a Boccherini Sonata, but the string tone never turns strident. And as a complete surprise, Dubeau and her group offer an arrangement of The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" which teases and riffs before getting into the melody, then plays it in the lower reaches of the instrument, and is then joined by the piano, allowing it to reach upwards and jazzily improvise---and then she throws in a moment or two of "Sympathy for the Devil" (!) before it concludes with the original melody. There are other joys on this CD as well---this is not your everyday violin bon-bon recital. It's all highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Album Description
This mischievious recital celebrates works inspired by the Devil: from Tartini's Devil's Trill, written after the composer dreamt that he had sold his soul to the Devil, to the infernal whirlwinds of Saint-Saën's Danse Macabre and Dompierre's Les Beautés du diable, composed specifically for La Pietà. It also pays homage to Paganini, the famed violinist who once confided to a friend that the Devil led him by the hand. This program shows an impish sense of humor as well... it features a unique arrangement of The Rolling Stones' Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil! Angèle Dubeau is one of Canada's most prominent recording artists. belonging to the exclusive group of Canadian classical soloists who can boast of having attained "gold" sales status. She is also the founder and director La Pietá. This CD is packaged with a bonus DVD featuring video clips and live concert excerpts.
Customer Reviews:
FABULOUS!.......2007-02-15
I ADORE this CD. I first heard it on the local classical music station and my ears picked right up. "What IS that?" It was so alive, so vibrant. The station only plays it about once a year, but each time it catches my attention. "Ah, that's Angele Dubeau." The selections are a mix of new and old. Two of the new pieces are by Francois Dompierre; his "Le Diable matou" is one of my favorites. I play this CD over and over and over...
I disagree with the reviewer who said you must love violin music to enjoy this. I do enjoy the violin, but I think the CD's power and reach go far beyond violin lovers.
The CD also includes a DVD of concert excerpts.
Give this CD a try. I'm so glad I did.
Eduardo Carlos Leon.......2007-02-01
The sound is tight and fresh. But take heed--only a person who love`s violin works would enjoy this c-d.And i would be one of those persons.ESP.Hot Women with violins!!!
Unique and pleasant........2006-12-23
It is refreshing to hear something new. The tracks are old favorites but the sound is new. Different. And in a good way.
Not the same old interpretations sped up or slowed down. But a genuine new groove down a familiar road.
She is a great violinist and has a knack for interplay with the rest of the band. It's not a flashy highly technical performance like you may expect from Perlman or Mutter. But not on the emotional ragged edge like Sonnenberg. But something in between with a new twist.
Emotional, Powerful, Fizzy.......2005-05-19
Long a stodgy devotee of baroque music, with the first few notes of this strong stuff I became an addict. Over and over again I play this CD, never quite anticipating the power and emotional bang of the music as it plays - even though I know the notes by now. If you ever studied Walter Piston's "harmony" the structures and transitions are back-of-the-book stuff, but the push is all elemental, basic, built-in, the familiar 1-4-5 with musical sequins, trampolines, backflips, and gelginite. Wow. And then some.
I'm so besotted, I had a couple of 13-year old boys (my son and a friend) listen to it in the car one day. They were bug-eyed after a couple of cuts, and not with horror. Now they ask for it, and yell with glee when the musical tension breaks over their heads in crashing chords.
Can I add a few more stars?
Infernal Violins.......2004-04-12
This music is fantastic. Because the violin she uses is a Stradovarius, the music pours like liquid velvet out of it. The choices of compositions are fantastic also. I think her interpretation of them along with the violin and her back-up group are what make this album so outstanding.

Customer Reviews:
Take Your Pick!.......2007-05-11
With seven versions of the same song, you wonder if it's worth it - yeah, it is. "The Neptune's" two versions focus on the vocal and the percussion, leaving the bass out most of the way. "Fatboy Slim" adds more special effects and has the bass going full steam, but they too have the special effects that can either add or detract from the song - it's your interpretation. "Full Phat" basically does the same thing, only those versions are livelier with the percussion, bass and effects. The only real reason to buy this extended mix is the Rolling Stones true version at 6:16 minutes, where in SACD surround sound; you can hear everything you never heard before. It is that crystal clear. Big kudos for having veteran pianist Nicky Hopkins on board and percussionist Ricky Dijon made his historic mark here. The lead guitar sounds best on the final track and we can even thank Marianne Faithful for background vocals. I'd say this is a hit across the board.
A must for any SACD collection!.......2004-09-15
Everyone has a different opinion regarding these remixes and frankly, i just can't see myself listening to this whole album in one sitting as there is too much redundancy. These are essentially three remixes of the same song, with a long and short version of each for a total of six track ranging from under four minutes to over 8 minutes in lenght.
But never mind all that!
This album is A MUST for anyone because of it's last track: The original Sympathy for the Devil, beautifully remixed in 5.1 Multichanel Audio. Here, the lead guitar and vocals use the center chanel and the congas and maracas have been sent to the surrounds to provide a nice envelopping sound without getting cheezy...
If only all the Stones' Abkco rereleases were like this!
Worth adding to your Stones collection........2004-07-19
You get exactly what you are promised in this one. Given we probably all bought it due to the curosity factor, of course, no one who bought this really should be bitching too much.
The last track is the original March-June 1968 mix that became the classic with Jagger, Richards, Wyman, & Watts plus Rocky Dijon's congas, Nicky Hopkins' piano and Marianne Faithful and Anita Pallenberg adding vocals. Then you get 6 remixes, 2 each by the Neptunes, Fatboy Slim, and Full Phatt.
The Neptunes pair is by far the best....leaving Mick to do some acapella work works great plus they had enough sense not to try to outdo the original length (something Fatboy Slim should have considered as his full length remix exceeds the original by more than 2 minutes.....without adding significantly to any acoustic experiences of the Stones original mix)....so what is the point of a remix again?
Full Phatt does a decent job on both.....the first is better in my opinion but both are good enough they should have run in second place, not third.
Finally, this would be much better if there were more of the classic recordings of the song that have already been done with perhaps the version from Maxx or one of the other DVDs.
not bad, but could be better.......2004-05-22
The remix of Sympathy for the Devil was a brilliant idea but it could have been much better.
The remix released in 2003 features a long and full length remix by respectively the Neptunes, Fatboy Slim and Full Phatt. The seventh, and last piece in the record, is the Rolling Stones' original recording.
Leaving aside that the original recording seems (to me at least)to be mych better than the more recent remixes, there's another reason to think that this projecty could have been realized in a much better way.
In addition to the original recording and the most recent remixes -three would have been enough, six is way too much- the Stones should have included some historical live performances of their classic song (the version performed in Hyde Park for Brian Jones'funeral, the version recorded in Love you Live and so on). This would have shown that no matter how it is performed or when it is performed, 'Sympathy' is always a phenomenally fresh and intriguing song. This, and nothing less than this, would have done justice to the greatness of the Stones.
Um...Why?.......2004-05-08
Isn't the original song good enough, even for today's standards, or is this the only way for the Stones to reach the rap community. C'mon, you can't mess with greatness

Turning one song into, uh, eight........2000-07-01
Laibach are the undisputed experts at taking mundane songs we hear on the classic rock stations and injecting them with enough histrionics to make Jim Carrey blush. SEE Laibach turn the carefree, bouncy "woo-hoo" of the 'Stones song into a high-stepping military march! SEE Laibach recite Mick Jagger's stoner lyrics with the growling seriousness of a United Nations oration! SEE Laibach turn the song into a funked-out disco song complete with a daffy chorus of German girls who can barely pronounce "sympathy"!
Hilarious and Absolutely Whacked.......1999-05-02
The nazi propaganda family on the cover is just a primer for all the twisted humor you're in for with this CD. All three covers by Laibach are absolute riots. The one by Germania (track five) is probably the best of all, complete with well-placed Mick Jagger samples. I wonder what the Rolling Stones would think if they heard any of this. The other tracks are, well, strange. Punks and Goths are conformers. THESE guys are FREAKS.

Hands down the best Rock and Roll band of the 90s.......2003-11-16
Saturday Nite Fever is the finest moment of the Devil Dogs, but they made no bad records and their swan song EP, Stereodrive, is worth picking up if you can find it. These guys weren't punk, just good ol sexist rock n' roll. But the secret is the songwriting. The Devil Dogs never forgot to write a melody to go with the attitude. Live, they were one of the best bands I've ever seen. Too bad more people didn't catch on, because they might have hung around. On the upside, they never got a chance to suck! Long live NY City RAWK N ROLL; long live the Devil Dogs!
this record cost me $135.......2001-07-24
I got my first speeding ticket listening to this record, so it must be pretty damn good... but 4 stars cause I'm holding a grudge.
rock and roll.......2000-02-13
this is the rockinest piece of rock n roll recorded in the1990's, and the world stood by and ignored. to you who missed thesethree bad boys from New York in their day, here is your chance to find salvation and feel better about your measly existence... purely from being exposed to the glory that will always be The Devil Dogs END
Gettin' on a jet plane.......2000-02-12
This is the second-best rock and roll record ever created by human beings. The first, of course, is the Stooges' "Fun House."
The day I bought this record, I got home a few minutes before I had to leave for work on the night shift. The Devil Dogs already were my favorite band going and I HAD to hear what it sounded like before I left. I put it on my turntable, listened to the first song, literally yelled "Yes" in a jubilant affirmation of my rock heroes, turned it off, called my boss and said I was going to be about an hour late. I listened to the whole album twice and forced myself to leave my apartment and my new favorite record. Eight years later, this record is still in my A-list rotation. There's no better post-punk band than the Devil Dogs and I highly doubt there ever will be.
this is the real rock'n'roll experience for the lame 90's.......1999-05-31
This record should be the rock'n'roll bible ! The Devil Dogs lay waste to all the s****y, classic rock soundin' crap that passes as " R+R " or " garage " in the lame-as-hell 90's. The Dogs kicked the hell out of a boring and grunge-filled music business and got no respect...you should be ashamed of yo' self.

Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10
As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!
Best CD I own........2003-11-04
I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.
Classical classics.......2002-11-12
The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.
Excellent choice.......2002-08-27
If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.
Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23
Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.

Trendy Music for all ages.......2000-11-14
Perfect! Great tunes! I loved it and highly recommend it! A nice surprise to music lovers of all ages.
Innovative, perfectly performed - watch out Led Zeppelin!.......1999-07-27
If you are a rock and roll fan, this collection of classic rock and roll, arranged for string quartet by Juilliard-trained musicians, will make a classical music lover out of you. If you are a classical music fan, the arrangements and musicality will make you appreciate the complexities of contemporary and classic rock. Every song contains nuances and influences of the greatest composers (Vivaldi in "Scarborough Fair", Bartok in "Satisfaction", George Harrison in "Friends", Copeland in "Blackbird"). The arrangements, especially in "Sympathy" and "Stairway", are faithful to the originals. The "Who" material ("Who Are You"/See Me, Feel Me - Pinball Wizard") is energetic and makes you remember how great "Tommy" was. All in all, the CD is great to listen to if you are looking for a change of pace, and it's even better when you take time to really listen to the music and the arrangements. Highly Recommended for any connoisseur of music.

Customer Reviews:
A Bit More.......2004-07-19
You get exactly what you are promised in this one, which is more than the US/UK release.....Honky Tonk Women is added!.
The Neptunes pair is by far the best....leaving Mick to do some acapella work works great plus they had enough sense not to try to outdo the original length (something Fatboy Slim should have considered as his full length remix exceeds the original by more than 2 minutes.....without adding significantly to any acoustic experiences of the Stones original mix....so what is the point of a remix again?
Full Phatt does a decent job on both.....the first is better in my opinion but both are good enough they should have run in second place, not third.
Finally, this would be much better if there were more of the classic recordings of the song that have already been done with perhaps the version from Maxx or one of the other DVDs.
