4 out of 5 stars A quality catch all release.......2007-03-10

Pretty much the perfect AC compilation this. Rather than put you through my opinions of each of these tracks - which will be familiar to many of you anyway, I'll just point out a few things that may get you thinking or sway your decision.

1) With 21 tracks this is a chock full disc. And it covers the 70's through to the early 90's.
2) It includes some of the guys art rock phase, which was always more linear than Zappas but still kinda out there. The benefit of including this stuff is that it gives the new an a real taste for the guys career.
3) Great liner notes - you get snippets of info plus a few photos and also a discography up to and including Brutal planet which also gives the actual release dates for the albums and the producer for each album.

This would be a great buy for the newcomer to hard rock/metal wanting to get an education or the casual fan of a couple of AC tunes that just want's a disc that's a decent retrospective up to the turn of the century. More hardcore fans probably own all these tunes anyway so will have to decide for themselves!

4 out of 5 stars Almost The Greatest Hits Of Early Alice.......2005-11-24

This abum is not so much a greatest hits, as more a best of the early days. But then the last 2 tracks are from albums 10 years after the last.

If it where my choice, i'd have not included Hey Stoopid and Poison, and instead have put in Go To Hell and Clones. Tho, it's hard to pick "best of lists" for Alice.... after 30 years of hits after hits, Alice should quit coming out with a million compilation and greatest hits type albusm every year and just release a box set with every album and call that "the best of Alice"

4 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper - 'The Definitive...' (Rhino).......2005-08-18

Basically,a 21-track compilation of Cooper's big hits, plus some of those 'deep album cuts' that us old school Alice Cooper fans never really grow tired of hearing.Tunes like his Jim Morrison tribute "Desperado","Halo Of Flies"(I about sh** my pants when I saw him play this song on his 'Rock&Roll Carnival Tour' a few years ago),"Hello Hooray","Generation Landslide"(nice harp work),"Teenage Landslide '74" and "From The Inside".Very nice.

5 out of 5 stars They Don't Make It Like This Anymore..........2004-03-02

They don't make rock'n'roll like this these days... I'm not saying I don't like nowadays music, but nobody can make it like Alice Cooper.
This compilation is, in my opinion, a must-have for any music fan out there. It doesn't matter if you like rock, pop, rap or classical music; what matters is that this CD has 21 tracks of great music, something who seems to be unknown to most bands today.
My favorite songs in here are "Desperado", "Hey Stoopid", "I Never Cry", "I'm Eighteen", "No More Mr. Nice Guy", "Only Women Bleed" and "Teenage Lament '74". These songs are just awesome, you must listen them to know what I'm saying.
The message of this review is simple: buy this CD, it's awesome. I don't need to explain anything more, this is the Definitive Alice Cooper compilation and you should take it home.

4 out of 5 stars The foreign equivalent of Mascara And Monsters.......2004-01-31

Alice Cooper is a god of rock and roll. For well over thirty years, from his days in the classic Alice Cooper band to his less credited solo material, he has been shelling out classic hard rock tunes that have rarely failed to please. Over the years Alice has been represented in a number of hits compilations. Recently America got a new one called Mascara And Monsters, while some foreign nations got this one as an equivalent. Read on for my review of The Definitive Alice Cooper.

PROS:
-Are you a casual fan of the Alice Cooper Band who just wants the big hits? This is for you. I'm Eighteen, Under My Wheels, School's Out, Elected, No More Mr. Nice Guy, and Generation Landslide are all here for your listening pleasure.
-The compilation also covers Alice Cooper's solo material. Hits from his solo days like the classic Welcome To My Nightmare and his "comeback" smash Poison can also be found here.
-Many underrated masterpieces from all phases of Alice's career can be found here, including Desperado, Hello Hurray, and one of my favorite Alice Cooper songs ever - a little masterpiece called Halo Of Flies.
-As another reviewer stated, this compilation IS superior to its American counterpart in most ways.
-You get twenty-one songs on one disc!

CONS:
-No tracks from the Alice Cooper band's first two albums, released on the Frank Zappa record label. Several other albums also get zero representation.
-A number of excellent tracks are missing. Where are Is It My Body, Dead Babies, Cold Ethyl, Feed My Frankenstein, House Of Fire, and Lost In America?
-Although this compilation is ultimately better than its American counterpart, it's much easier to find the American one - and obviously less expensive.
-Let's face the facts - capturing the true legacy of Alice Cooper in just eighty minutes is impossible.

OVERALL:
This is a VERY good compilation, even better than its American counterpart. If you come across this CD for a good price somewhere, and you're a casual Alice Cooper fan, GET IT. Though some may beg to differ, I think this is Alice's best compilation to date.

4 out of 5 stars A good trip through the years.......2003-02-28

Alice Cooper must be regarded as a legend, and his influence on the rock scene can't be denied. How much impact did Cooper have on Kiss? Would we have Marilyn Manson if it wasn't for Mr. Cooper? Alice Cooper sure put theatre into music and horror into rock, and although he might be known mostly for that, Cooper was also talented. If you want a taste of Alice Cooper, this album is a very good buy. On "Definitive" you get most of his biggest hits and best songs, and that will do if you're not a dedicated fan.

Most of the songs are from Cooper's earlier career, and that's good because somewhere down the road Cooper lost his originality and started making average, or mediocre heavy metal (like "Poison"). On this release you get some great rock tunes like "I'm eighteen", "School's out", "No more Mr. nice guy", "Teenage lament `74", "Billion dollar babies" and "Welcome to my nightmare" among others. You might be pleasant surprised to find out that Alice Cooper also had a softer side when you get to hear the excellent "You and me" and "Only women bleed".

Dedicated fans might have a thing or two to say about the chosen songs, but for us who don't feel the need to own every single release from Alice Cooper this album is great.

3 out of 5 stars Australian "Mascara & Monsters".......2001-05-20

Made in AUS in 2001, Serial# 8122-73534-2, Playing Time 78:11

This australian exclusive has a slightly different content than "Mascara & Monsters", removing "Is It My Body", "Be My Lover" and "Clones(We're All)", while adding the full version of "Halo Of Flies" and the single version of "Hey Stoopid". Other tracks have also been replaced by their single version, namely "Billion Dollar Babies", "Teenage Lament '74" as well as "Muscle Of Love".

The disc is about 2 minutes longer than "Mascara...", and just as the liner notes of the latter contained quick "memories" of each track, this edition does as well, with the appropriate adjustments for the change in content.

I wasn't really fond of the US release (you can see my review there to find out why), and this edition is only slightly better: it still skips important releases, and doesn't warrant the bigger investment.

5 out of 5 stars BRITISH "MASCARA AND MONSTERS"........2001-03-03

IT'S ALMOST THE SAME CD AS "MASCARA & MONSTERS: THE BEST OF ALICE COOPER". HOWEVER, IT NOT INCLUDE "IS IT MY BODY", "BE MY LOVER" AND "CLONES (WE'RE ALL)". IT REPLACES TWO OF THEM BY "HALO OF FLIES" AND "HEY STOOPID". IT IS SHORTER FROM "MASCARA..." BY ONE SONG - IT HAS 21 SONGS. I WOULD SAY ONLY THE BIGGEST FANS AND COLLECTORS SHOULD SPENT 25 DOLLARS FOR IT. IF YOU'RE NOT THE COLLECTOR OF ALICE'S CDS, YOU BETTER BUY "MASCARA & MONSTERS: THE BEST OF ALICE COOPER" FOR ABOUT ONLY 14 DOLLARS.
