Sure, Detroit had the MC5 and the Stooges, but Long Island's Kiss threw down their own gauntlet. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss cleaved a spot between glam, punk, waning Woodstock rock, and adult-oriented pop and became a phenomenon in the process. Kiss kept their music simple and, of course, sexual, with the likes of "Hotter than Hell," "Love Gun," and "Calling Dr. Love," paving the way for the waves of pop-metal sexpot wannabes and winning fans in such quantities that they launched the so-called Kiss Army. Their magnetism permeates this 21-song set, with Criss sounding so lonesome he could cry on "Beth," and the fire-breathing, blood-spitting Simmons unfailingly serving up a comical mix of menace and lasciviousness. The version of "Rock & Roll All Nite" comes from 1975's crowd-noise drenched Alive!, cut at the time when live albums were de rigueur. This collection was made smartly enough that only four songs come from the band's post-Dynasty period, making The Very Best of Kiss an essential primer on 1970s rock grandeur. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars Let Your CD Player Kiss This.......2007-07-09

This KISS compilation is a good record, but not a great one. KISS was a big band in the mid-70s thru early 80s, and this CD gives a good overview of their stuff. Something that keeps this album back is that a lot of the songs, especially in the first half of the disc, sound so much alike, almost just like variants of one song. The good tunes amount to solid rock. Here they are:

Strutter
Detroit Rock City
Calling Dr. Love
Hard Luck Woman - an actual sensitive, acoustic tune from KISS
Christine 16
New York Groove
I Was Made for Lovin You - great song, really moves, lyrics stick in head
Love it Loud - kinda cheesy lyrics, but tune is catchy
Lick it Up - ditto
Forever - ballad from 1990 that's pretty good coming from hard rockers

This album gets stronger toward the end, in large part due to more song variation

5 out of 5 stars a good place to start..........2007-06-04

I generally try to avoid compilations like the plague b/c you will no doubt not get EVERY good song from the band on one disc, however, if i were to own one kiss album and/or was looking for a good place to start to get into the band this is the album i would start with. all the big hits are here that have been played on the radio countless times over the years...strutter, beth, dr love (my fav) detroit rock city, rock n roll all nite, forever, lick it up, hard luck woman, etc. if you like this album then i would venture out a little and see what else is available such as the album creatures of the night (best song war machine) and crazy nights (best song crazy nights) as those songs are not included here.

4 out of 5 stars Another pointless review..........2007-05-19

We need another review of this CD like we need another KISS compilation, i.e. a hole in the head. However, I'll put my two cents worth in (and I'm probably being generous in my monetary evaluation...)
I'm not a "KISS Army" sized KISS fan but I think they have a lot of great songs in their catalog and to compile the best onto a single CD is a task that is certain to miss the mark by most fans' standards. I can see where most of these KISS comps serve a purpose though. DOUBLE PLATINUM is the original KISS "best of" and will never be duplicated or bettered simply because it contains the best loved songs from the band's original incarnation. It's pre-disco, pre-Elder, pre-band member changes, pre-taking off the make-up, pre-Michael Bolton power ballads.
SMASHES, THRASHES & HITS is in another (lower) class all by itself. It attempted to cover the band's entire career by including DOUBLE PLATINUM-era classics, more recent material, some remixes, a re-recording, and some new material. It crashed and burned in all of these areas leaving everyone who was showing any interest completely unsatisfied. The experience of listening to SMASHES, THRASHES & HITS was akin to a groupie making her way to Gene Simmons' dressing room for some serious oral action, only to find Christopher Cross waiting for her inside.
YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU GOT THE BEST was a collection of their best live recordings.
GOLD and the MILLENIUM COLLECTION are just further entries into the record company's ongoing marketing campaign to put visually identical "best of's" in the stores of virtually every artist that ever produced a hit record of any consequence.
So THE VERY BEST OF KISS is the first level headed attempt at a single disc career spanning compilation of KISS' most popular material (including studio and live cuts) and not containing any weird edits, remixes or rerecordings.
Okay, so we've got 21 cuts of hot KISS action.
Does it hit all the high marks? Everyone can probably agree that it doesn't. Seriously, how could it?
What's on here that doesn't belong? What's not on here that is indespensable? Everyone will have their own answers to those last two questions, but I think the compilers did a fairly decent job of cramming one disc chock full of KISS classics.
What's not on here that I would like to see? "Black Diamond", "Do You Love Me", "Shandi", "Sure Know Something", "A World Without Heroes", "I", "Heaven's On Fire", "Tears Are Falling" and Gene Simmons' "Radioactive". But my list has two songs from THE ELDER so I probably deserve to have the KISS Army give me a serious beating.
As far as the greed argument goes, any record company is going to throw out compilations like this (particularly around Christmas time) to capitalize once again on a hit artists' ongoing popularity. It's usually the record company's greed that's evident, not the recording artists'.
So what exactly is the purpose that is being served by THE VERY BEST OF KISS? It replaces SMASHES, THRASHES & HITS which contained an inferior rerecording of "Beth", some awful remixes (whose lame idea was it to tone down the drums on "I Love It Loud"??!!) and new material that should have gone unreleased at the time. (The reviewers here that are bemoaning this compilation's lack of any new material might want to be reminded of "Let's Put The X In Sex", one of the worst songs ever recorded by anyone.) The original hits that weren't remixed for that collection are hampered by inferior remastering (probably not from the original tapes) resulting in poor sound quality.
At any rate, I think there's room for one more KISS collection and this is a pretty darn good one.
Oh, wait. I forgot about GREATEST KISS. Where does that one fit in?
Oh well, never mind.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best of KISS.......2007-03-23

There are certainly a bunch of greatest hits albums by KISS floating around out there, but this one is the BEST of the bunch.

Greatest hits albums aren't made with the die-hard fan in mind, so for those who don't have much or any KISS in their collection, this is a perfect starter CD.

For those of us who are long-time fans, we always feel like every greatest hits CD is missing something we think belongs on there. But when you look over this 21-song set, it's hard to think that there's anything on here that doesn't belong. On top of that, the album flows really well due to the chronological song ordering.

While The Very Best of KISS contains the essential hits like "Detroit Rock City", "Beth", "Shout It Out Loud", "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "I Was Made For Lovin' You", it also manages to cover a the entire career of the band better than other existing compilations. Songs like "I Love It Loud", "New York Groove", "I Stole Your Love" and "God Gave Rock and Roll" are true KISS staples that are often lacking on their other hits CDs.

If a KISS newbie is willing to spend up to $40, you could truly get the very best of KISS by picking up 3 CDs: "KISS Gold", "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Kiss, Vol. 2", and "Revenge". These 3 CDs contain every essential KISS song from 1974 thru 1992 -- including everything found on here.

But for this low price and great song selection, it's really hard to go wrong with The Very Best of KISS.

3 out of 5 stars Explicit Lyrics?!! WTF?.......2007-02-01

What are you people, nuns!? This is a Kiss collection, not Limp Bizkit or Lamb of God, there probably isn't even an a-word mentioned in any of these songs! Stop smoking the weed Amazon!

Good collection, but there is too much 70's and not enough 80's or 90's. Feel greedy, Paul and Gene? Well then make a 2-disc greatest hits, one with their 70's through early 80's and the other with a compilation of their greatest post-Dynasty hits.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars THIS VERSION FOR COLLECTORS ONLY!.......2006-01-28

This release is the 2004 (Japanese, I think) import. If you're looking for the US release of The Very Best of Kiss and stumbled in here somehow...back out and try again. There is no need to pay over $30 for this release when the US release is readily available here at Amazon for about $10. All indications suggest that there is no difference between the import and the US release other than some Asian writing on the disk.

As far as the music on this disk goes...

You wanted the best and with this CD you almost get all of the best. The great misnomer associated with Kiss is that they "are all about the theatrics, they are posers and can't really make good music." Well this CD proves quite simply that nothing could be farther from the truth.

In my review of Kiss' 2005 Rock the Nation DVD I said, "This DVD dispels the myth that Kiss were ever posers. They indeed were always great musicians and they were the inspiration for many metal bands rocking your world today."

In Kiss' The Very Best of Kiss, you get most of the songs that will go down in Kisstory as really making an impression on the world of rock. I'm sure that many who doubt that Kiss made a big impression on the world of rock would be surprised that some of today's bands that they think are superior were actually inspired by Kiss. Over the years Kiss have been in and Kiss have been out. But the bottom line is that behind the make-up and behind the awesome stage show you had a group of guys that wrote a stable full of songs that rock.

The songs are good. You can understand all of the lyrics (unlike some of today's hard rockers that sound like the Devil himself is at the mic, i.e. Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and the like), Kiss' melodies are pure rock and you get a great live show to boot.

On this disk you get:

1. Strutter
2. Deuce
3. Got To Choose
4. Hotter Than Hell
5. C`Mon And Love Me
6. Rock And Roll All Nite
7. Detroit Rock City
8. Shout It Out Loud
9. Beth
10. I Want You
11. Calling Dr. Love
12. Hard Luck Woman
13. I Stole Your Love
14. Christine Sixteen
15. Love Gun
16. New York Groove
17. I Was Made For Loving You
18. I Love It Loud
19. Lick It Up
20. Forever
21. God Gave Rock `N` Roll To You II

Clearly missing from this CD are Makin Love, She, Love Her All I Can and most notably Parasite.

Flash forward to 2006 and Kiss still have it together...going strong since the early 70s. Need proof? Check out their 2005 DVD release, "Rock the Nation". The DVD is awesome (see my 5 star review of Rock the Nation). The DVD has none of the wimpy Beth/Hard Luck Woman/Forever ballads, and it makes up for the missing songs on the CD. PLUS you get to see the great music performed in a sensational show. On the DVD you get:

1. Love Gun
2. Deuce
3. Makin' Love
4. Lick It Up
5. Christine Sixteen
6. She
7. Tears Are Falling
8. Got To Choose
9. I Love It Loud
10. Love Her All I Can
11. I Want You
12. Parasite
13. War Machine
14. 100,000 Years
15. Unholy
16. Shout It Out Loud
17. I Was Made For Lovin' You
18. Detroit Rock City
19. God Gave Rock & Roll to You II
20. Rock and Roll All Nite

Unfortunately, missing from the DVD are Strutter, Hotter Than Hell, C'mon and Love Me and I Stole Your Love.

Anyway, The Very Best of Kiss CD is a must if you haven't updated your vinyl to CD and you don't want to buy all of the individual early disks. And the Rock the Nation DVD should not be passed on if you are or ever were a Kiss fan. Got to Choose? No way! Buy 'em both, but go for the US release of the CD.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER KISS compilation,but a pretty good one.......2005-06-02

When you're a member of KISS, a band that has gotten the reputation as "The hottest band in the world" (a reputation that not even The Beatles or The Stones ever got)and You're still popular when you've been around for thirty-two years, You're going to make new music, right? For KISS, the answer to that question is no. Like The Beatles and AC/DC, KISS has proved to be a legendary band, and while they will probably always be popular and have their place in the hearts of most people, still, unless the band makes a new studio album, fans of the band will probably still have the complaint they have had for a while.........there are too many KISS compilations available! I am a huge fan of the band, but I agree about there being too many KISS compilations out there. But even though "They Very Best of KISS" happens to be ANOTHER compilation by the band, it lives up to the album title. Read on for my review of this:

This album takes a thorough look at KISS. Most of the material on here is here is 70's material, but that is what most fans request for greatest hits compilations, so that is OK. I liked KISS' music videos in the 80's better than I liked the videos they made in the 70's and 90's, but my favorite music from KISS is definitely the 70's material. KISS has always been a band that is about fun, good times, and rock 'n roll, and occasionally there are songs by the band about "having fun". Everything KISS is about shows in their music, which is why they are such a great band. The 70's material selected here were all excellent selections. Unfortunately, KISS doesn't have the honor of being one of the bands that saved rock and killed disco (hence, the song "I Was Made For Lovin' You")but they do have the honor of being one of the biggest rock bands of all time. I wasn't alive during the whole disco craze, but I don't care for some of the new music that is being released today, so I like getting to put in a CD from a band I like when I don't like most of the stuff (I'm a huge Velvet Revolver fan)that has made it's way on to the radio.

Lastly, Ace Frehley's excellent cover version of Hello's "New York Groove" was included on this album, and three songs from the 80's line-up of KISS ("I Love It Loud", "Lick It Up", and "Forever")as well as a touching tribute to late KISS drummer Eric Carr (RIP),"God Gave Rock 'n Roll To You II", an Argent tune KISS did a sequel to in the early 90's. A very good compilation, but this loses a star for being another KISS compilation and also for not having the song "Tears Are Falling" on here. If you want a good, cheap (the group's 2001 self-titled box set costs over $50)look at KISS from the 70's to the 90's, pick up this compilation. You will probably get the good look at KISS you want, and there a few rare photos inside the album sheets.

4 out of 5 stars Good compilation, but not perfect.......2005-06-01

The Very Best of KISS. One in a series of MANY hits compilations from KISS.

KISS. These guys are one of the legends of classic hard rock, and good reason. They had sinister looks, and the music to back it up. Who could ask for more from a band? Like so many other bands out there, KISS has had a large number of hits compilations released. How does this one measure up? Read on for my review of The Very Best Of KISS.

PROS:
-If you're the casual KISS fan seeking the band's biggest hits from the seventies, you've come to the right place. Rock And Roll All Nite (Alive! version), Hard Luck Woman, Strutter, Beth, and all the other classics you've grown to love can be found on this compilation.
-This is a very affordable compilation, which is good for the fan on a budget.
-You'll also get plenty of underrated songs on this compilation, including New York Groove, from Ace Frehley's 1978 solo album.
-If you don't want to buy all the band's album's, this serves as an excellent introduction to the group. It's affordable, and has twenty-one tracks on a single disc, which span a large period of time. In my opinion, this is the group's best single-disc hits compilation.

CONS:
-Don't get me wrong, I love the live version of Rock And Roll All Nite, but I thought it was a big enough hit that both the live AND STUDIO versions should be on here.
-This compilation, for the most part, only covers the band's material with the classic Stanley, Simmons, Frehley, and Kriss line-up. Why's this a bad thing? Because of it, a good deal of the band's highly underrated eighties material (featuring a slightly varied line-up) can't be found here. That means Heaven's On Fire has to sit this one out.
-The inclusion of some tracks is questionable. I LOVE every song on this compilation, no questions asked, but it seems like the record company was having a hard time deciding what kind of a hits compilation they wanted to make. The compilation consists mostly of the group's classic seventies material, with a few post-seventies cuts and the track from the Ace Frehley solo album thrown in. While all good songs, they make for a rather uneven listen. New York Groove doesn't really belong here because it isn't a KISS song. While a great song, I think the space would have been better filled with an actual KISS song (Black Diamond would have been a good bet.)
-THIS NEEDED TO BE A TWO DISC SET! One disc could have been seventies stuff, and one could have been post-seventies stuff. You can't fully represent this band in just eighty minutes!
-DID WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER KISS GREATEST HITS COLLECTION? Quite honestly, there are enough of them on the market. This IS an excellent collection, it just wasn't really necessary to release it.

OVERALL:
If you're a casual KISS fan, you really can't go wrong with this compilation. It's more than worth the price you'll end up paying for it. I personally recommend that you buy all of the albums, but if you're on a budget, this one makes for a fine alternative.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Victor Herbert.......1999-05-19

This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.
