THE VERY BEST OF THE YARDBIRDS classic oldies.......2005-09-15
The VERY BEST OF THE YARDBIRS is the epitomy of sixties rock and roll. Several of the songs on this cd have been twords the top of the charts. EVIL HEARTED YOU and FOR YOUR LOVE are probobly the most recognized songs of the YARDBIRDS. The YARDBIRDS sound is pretty much the same as the BEATLES. Which means then, that it is different than the EAGLES. The YARDBIRS were never as popular as the BEATLES, with the baby boomer generation. This can probobly be atributed to there lack of origanil sound and lack of quality lyrics over the long term. this is one of those British clone bands however they really can not be faulted for this as it was the the thing to do at the time. in the song I ANIT GOT YOU they sing about women and there Mojo and how they have every thing exept whats really important to them. Either way its a great CD.
Solid Yardbirds comp, but there's better available. .......2005-06-11
The Yardbirds were one of the most influential British Invasion groups, alongside The Who, Kinks, and (duh) The Beatles. This band, founded originally in 1963 and ending in 1968, was a revolving door and launchpad for three of the hottest guitarists in England at the time (in chronological order)--Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Also of note was a solid, tight band in the form of Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar), Jim McCarty (percussion), and the very underrated frontman Keith Relf. While not a great belter in the vein of, say, Roger Daltrey, he had a distinctive and pure voice that worked well with The Yardbird's unique style.
The Clapton era (1963-1965) was probably the least interesting period, though I find their singles to be stronger than most of their contemporaries at the time (that includes The Beatles)--an adventurous concoction of bluesy proto-hard rock and pop. Wish You Would, I Ain't Got You, and hit single For Your Love (which sounds surprisingly fresh for '64) are all here representing this period.
The band really took off when Clapton left for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Jeff Beck stepped in, adding his own highly inventive approach to guitar that resulted in awesome tunes like Heart Full Of Soul (my pick for best Yardbirds single with its SCORCHING Beck leads), Shapes Of Things, Bo Diddley cover I'm A Man, and Mister You're A Better Man Than I. Also notable were psychedelic experiments like Still I'm Sad with its weird Gregorian chant-esque vocals. Single for single in 1965-66, The Yardbirds were easily the equal of other better-known British bands.
Jimmy Page entered the band in '66 after their original bass player left, and played on the second Yardbirds studio album Roger The Engineer and on several singles, most notably Happenings Ten Years Time Ago (which isn't here, regrettably). Shortly after Beck called it quits and the Page-led band eventually imploded, Page formed a new band titled The New Yardbirds, later known as Led Zeppelin. We all know how that turned out.
Anyway, this is a solid import that features some fairly rare Yardbirds tracks, including Italian single Paff... Bum (decent, but generally forgettable), Someone To Love (Parts 1 & 2), and the Keith Relf track Mr. Zero. Unfortunately, two crucial singles (Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, Over Under Sideways Down) are missing. So instead of buying this, I'd spring for the import best-of single disk Over Under Sideways Down (which includes pretty much everything here plus those two singles) or the Ultimate! two-disc comp. Then get Five Live Yardbirds and Roger The Engineer to complete your Yardbirds collection.

Good CD to start your collection........2002-04-11
This is another one of Giorgio Gomelsky's Yardbirds CD.
This opening two tracks on this disc are probably among
the Yardbirds' best known tracks, and they represent
some of the pop offerings on this album. Good Morning
Little Schoolgirl is an interesting mix of Buddy Holly
meets The Rolling Stones. The track has a 50s feel to
it, but the 1960s Rolling Stones seems evident as well.
Still I'm Sad and Evil Hearted You are tunes that are
darker in nature, and represent sort of a gothic/
psychedelic perspective. Certain Girl is another pop
tune that can be probably found on several Yardbirds
discs. Jeff's Blues is a nice instrumental blues
number by Jeff Beck. I Wish You Would is yet another
pop tune. I'm Not Talking and You're A Better Man Than
I are sort of a mix between blues and pop. Shapes of
Things is another well-known Yardbirds pop tune.
I'm A Man is a nice bridge before we get to another
blues tune, a cover of John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom.
At this point in the album, we get to some more
covers and the live recordings on the disc. T-Bone,
Burnett's Smokestack Lighting, Chuck Berry's Let It
Rock, You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover, Too Much
Monkey Business and Respectable. All done fairly well.
Pretty Girl is a solid effort as well. Then the final
cut on the album, Stroll On, features a very catchy
guitar riff that will later be included in Led Zeppelin.
The problems with this album is it's a bit disjointed.
It jumps from pop to blues to gothic rock and back
again. Another problem is you will still need to be
various Yardbirds compilations if you want a true
representation of their work. The tracks that made this
compilation are good in themselves, and stand on their
own merit, however, if you can't or won't spend money
on the Yardbirds' anthology set of discs, titled simply
Ultimate!, a cheaper option would be to search the
various Yardbirds titles released by Giorgio Gomelsky.
As a sidenote, it's interesting to note the man responsible
for writing Heart Full of Soul and For Your Love, also
penned the Hollies tune Bus Stop.
A LESS COMMERCIAL YARDBIRDS WITH ERIC CLAPTON.......2001-03-17
This is probably a less commercial Yardbirds collection of tracks from their early years. Although most of it concentrates on the Eric Clapton years but it also features a few tracks from Beck and one from Page.
Despite it's less commercial look and sound, there are some decent songs on this album including FOR YOUR LOVE, HEART FULL OF SOUL, STILL I'M SAD, I'M NOT TALKING, BOOM BOOM, I'M A MAN AND MISTER YOU'RE A BETTER MAN THAN I just to name a few. There are also some live tracks recorded with Clapton such as RESPECTABLE, PRETTY GIRL and SMOKE STACK LIGHTNING.
Overall this is classic Yardbirds and it is worth it if you are a fan. Although this was my first Yardbirds album I found it too less commercial and the sound quality is not even close to perfect for a cd. Still some great songs and awesome playing just bad recording. Still highly reccommended for a Yardbirds fan.
