Timeless classic that marked a grand transition out of the 1980s into the 1990s!.......2006-05-27

Is it just me or is 1989's "Pump Up The Jam" among the most innovative dance records that I've ever heard even listening it today. The title track is universally popular even today and it's clear why! It is just an incredible and powerful jam for the dance floor. Other songs are the spunky "Come On" as well as the similar track "Rockin To The Beat". Get this CD today!

Great album.......2004-02-23

This CD is perhaps old but it's still great to listen today. It's one of the classics of eurodance and no one will change it. I really enjoyed every track on this album : if you like one track, you will like all of them because they are similar. My favourites are PUMP UP THE JAM, GET UP [BEFORE THE NIGHT IS OVER], TOUGH, COME ON, THIS BEAT IS TECHNOTRONIC, ROCKIN' OVER THE BEAT and MOVE THIS. The best of these tracks is THIS BEAT IS TECHNOTRONIC : a great "classic techno" track that will make you dance, the band did an amazing job with this track, I love it. But I also listen to the others. A good purchase that you won't regret if you listened and like one track from that album.

Techno-Tragedy.......2001-10-16

Ever since Solid Gold has been taken off the air I have constantly struggled with ways to fill up my evenings. I have passed the time by using various outlets such as needlepoint, playing Battleship (alone), and most recently I dipped my pen into the inkwell that is Tae-Bo. But since the hamstring injury that I recently suffered has prematurely cut my Tae-Boing career short, I have been met with extreme difficulty in passing my nights. Luckily for my while I was expressing my thoughts on a VH1 message board, I saw one constant group's name being tossed about with an enormous amount of popularity. This "Limp Biszkit" as they were called seemed to be accumulating an unbelievable amount of attention. I hurried down to the shop where records can be purchased and I sampled a "Limp Biszkit" release. The anger and angst that flooded my body was so intense I was forced to throw my headphones to the floor in order to maintain my sanity. In my fit of dismay I bolted down to the local emporium and much my ear's delight I was met with the enchanting sound of "Pump Up the Jam" that was my musical savior at this low point in my life. Wasting no time, for my musical life was endangered and I feared that I may never again be able to listen to "Terrence Trent D'Arby" or "Sade" in the same manner, I purchased the "Pump Up the Jam" album by the group Technotronic. As I excitedly pressed play on my Sony Home Entertainment system, I was expecting a musical revelation but what I got was nothing more than empty hopes and dashed dreams. I was paralyzed by what I had heard and I was unable to stop the car crash catastrophe that was ensuing. Every new beginning to each song turned out to just intensify the horrible end to my musical manliness. I have never in my life looked at my home entertainment system with so much disgust. This appliance had given me so much enjoyment in years past that I could only sit and sulk on my dirty brown recliner. It took me weeks upon weeks to recover and I replied to the trash that my home entertainment system dished out to me, that I threw my my system in the garbage bin. I have moved far enough along in my recovery process that writing this review is a form of therapy and hopefully I will be able to steer away possible purchasers away from making a mistake that may prove to undo their life. So I must merely say "You're Welcome."

Essential.......2000-09-12

This CD is a must-have for any serious fan of club/house/techno music. Technotronic was revolutionary in their treatment of the genre, and their sound is a great example of the late 80's/early 90's club scene. Definitely a pivotal album in the history of dance music.

Building on the success of the more pop-oriented Permanent Vacation, this 1989 release banished any doubts that Aerosmith's unlikely late-'80s comeback was a fluke of nature--or merely the product of shrewd record company calculations. That Aerosmith could produce a pair of albums to rival Toys in the Attic and Rocks after a decade-and-change of decay and despair seemed all but unnatural. While Vacation's other key players (producer Bruce Fairbairn, outside songwriters Jim Vallance and Desmond Child) are still part of the mix, it's the band's familiar, tough swagger that powers this collection from the get-go. And while the Vallance-Child collaborations ("The Other Side" and the power ballad "What It Takes," respectively) were successful, it's telling that the album's twin pop-rock evergreens, "Love in an Elevator" and "Janie's Got a Gun," originated entirely within the band; the old dogs had not only learned a few new tricks, they seemed bent on tutoring their would-be trainers in the bargain. One Of Aerosmith's Best "Second Wind" Albums.......2007-05-22

Hot on the heels of their successful "Permanent Vacation" and still enjoying a resurgence as rockers, Aerosmith cranked out "Pump." It is, in my opinion, the best of their second successful run of albums. While "Vacation" set the table, "Pump" kicked things into high gear. From the opening track, "Young Lust," Aerosmith does not let up with their bluesy, dirty, driving sound. Songs like "F.I.N.E." and "My Girl" solidified this album as real rock, but it was the deep contrasts in their major releases that set this album apart from the pack. From the socially-conscious and touchy subject of "Janie's Got A Gun" to the slow, emotional "What It Takes" to the raw, sex-laden "Love In An Elevator," Aerosmith took this album in a million directions and managed to hold it all together. They also threw in a lot of experimental sounding segues as with "Dulcimer Stomp" and the wonderful "Hoodoo Voodoo Medicine Man."

In short, if I had to pick one album from their second run in rock history, I'd have to go with "Pump." It proved that older rockers could hang with the best of the young guys at the time and it came before their more homogenized and stale sounding albums like "Get A Grip."

Pump by Aerosmith.......2007-03-27

I recently borrowed this CD from the local library, it is one of my favorites from 80s ad 90s rock, unfortunately this copy from the library was damaged and it was the only one. I immediately got on Amazon and I was so happy to find the CD at such an excellent price. I have been playing it almost constantly since I bought it. Thank you.

Aerosmith On A Roll.......2007-01-25

Another good one from the boys from Boston. The album kick starts right off the bat with the heavy rocking of "Youg Lust" "F.I.N.E" and "Going Down". The album continues up the high energy from there. Several huge hits came from this album including "Love In An Elevator", "Janie's Got A Gun", "The Other Side". None of them are particular favorites of mine preferring most of the album tracks better. They also throw in a few short instrumentals as in between song threads including "Dulcimer Stomp" and "Hoodoo". The album closes with one of my all time favorite Aerosmith songs "What It Takes". The song is a classic break up ballad, and happened to come out at a time when a relationship that I was in was falling apart. At the time it was really emotional for me and I literally could have written the words to this song. It was like Tyler had gotten into my head and pulled the lyrics straight from my brain. The girl is long gone, but the song still brings back a lot of memories when I hear it. It has remained a favorite of mine even today.

a true comeback cd.......2006-09-18

Aerosmith's first four albums (especially "Toys in the Attic" and "ROcks") were terrific albums coming from a true musical jugernaut. Then they used drugs to an extreme, tanked and I thought for sure they were through.

"Pump" was a return to the 1970's style Aerosmith, the swanky, strutting, rock Gods title that they relinquished circa 1978.

"Love in the Elevator" seems to start up right from "Rocks" since it is a kicking, rocking piece of rock sleaze. "Janies got a gun" has a cool baritone guitar riff. "F.I.N.E.' and "Monkey on my Back" sounds like a band that re-found their confidence. "The other side" and "What it takes" are killer songs that sound like they are right out of the 1970's.

After "Pump' they got all corporate, had professional song writers, and lost their mojo. When you think about it, putting out 5 great albums is a pretty good accomplishment. Not many bands have done it!

Indispensable.......2006-08-06

Pump definitely consolidated Aerosmith as one of the top and dearest Hard Rock bands for a second generation of fans, who missed the first wave of Stones on steroids sonics of the group.
Althought Pump is intended since its conception for a mass market and has printed the dollar sign all over the cover, the album is an excellent musical work. The songs are exciting, well executed and neatly produced (courtesy of Bruce Fairbairn). "Love In An Elevator", "The Other Side" and "F.I.N.E", will make you pump your fists on the air, "Janie's Got a Gun" is a classic sing along, if you're on the mood "What It Takes" will make you shed a tear or two, and "Voodoo Medicine Man" is an underrated gem.
Hoorray!!!!, for mercantilism with musical quality!!!!

After seeing this play, I knew I had to get the soundtrack. Most notable on the CD are the accapella song "Fisherman's Prayer" and the melancholy tune "Mamaw", as well as "The Night Dolly Parton Was Almost Mine" A Must have for any fan of soundtracks, OR country music!

Not what I expected.......2002-02-20

I live in a small northern suburb, and didn't hear this musical until my school drama group decided to put it on. Be warned: if you don't like country, you won't like this. But for a country album, it's pretty good. And even if you don't like country, "The Best Man" more than makes up for the rest of the album.

Superb harmony and humor!.......2001-12-14

I first saw the show at the local theatre about four years ago. It's only now that I came upon the soundtrack, and it's been great reliving the memories of seeing the show. The songs on this album are terrific- they range from ballad-type songs ("Sisters", "Mamaw", "The Best Man") to toe-tapping hand-clapping cast numbers ("No Holds Barred"- which I love to pieces -"Highway 57", "Vacation") to hilarious solo numbers ("Farmer Tan"). But possibly my favorite song on the whole album is "Fisherman's Prayer". The gentlemen of the cast combine their superb voice talents in this hilarious acappella telling the story of a regular fishing day that turns rainy. It cracks me up every time.
In short, this CD is one not to pass up. It's worth every cent, and will keep you singing the songs for a long, long time. Five stars and then some!

I recently played Jackson in this show and had the best time of my life. The energy never stops. The music is fun and upbeat. If you love kickin' country tunes and delicious harmony, you'll love Pump Boys and Dinettes.

I first saw Pumpboys on or near Broadway NYC. We had no expectations, yet were trnsported to another time and place, still equipped with familar electric guitars and the best rhytm bass I'd ever heard, played by down home mechanics and waitresses. The music and homespun tales captivated me and I still don't understand why this show isn't known as a classic, especially since there has been generously speaking, a mixed bag on broadway in recent years. Sure ., there was evita, about a Nazi prostitute, politician's wife, and the phantom, and (the best) LES Miserables, but cats-type reviews are not plays nor musicals, but TV extavagandzas, all miked so you can't even tell who or what is singing. The fun pathos and humor of pump boys is a different level of entertainmet, which transcends the generations. Right now, I'm online to upgrade my old LP and tape to a modern CD, though my son, Metallica Ben,a fan of heavy metal and Aerosmith, prefers playng the old 33 1/3 LP on my TURNTABLE with the wonder of the 60's, a magnetic cartridge with elliptical needle. He and my daughter , Eve, feel the pops and occasional clicks make the record seem evem more authentic than the CD, I'd like to try the ease and perfection of the laser technology

Good, But Could Have Been Amazing........2005-09-01

This is a decent soundtrack, but the frustrating thing is that it could have been incredible. As other reviewers have stated, it is missing quite a few songs that were featured prominently in the movie. Leonard Cohen is not on it, and songs by The Beastie Boys, The Descendents, Ice-T and Was(Not Was) are all absent as well.

What is on it is not bad, though. It's a mix of different styles of music all thrown together. Some songs stick out more than others. Here are some of the highlights. Concrete Blonde gives us a nice version of Cohen's "Everybody Knows" and Ivan Neville contributes a cool little song. I absolutely love the UK Surf Mix of "Wave Of Mutilation" by The Pixies and it is almost impossible to sit still while listening to the cover of "Kick Out The Jams." The lone hip-hop track is pretty good and has a jazzy feel to it and lyrics about censorship.

So, as I said it's not a terrible soundtrack, but the exclusion of certain songs hurts it a little. I also think it would have been cool if they would have had little clips from Hard Harry's show in between the songs so that you would feel like you were listening to his show. Oh, and one more thing, English singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding wrote a song for this soundtrack that was rejected. You can find it on his Dynablob album. It's called "Ask Why."

Frustrating Must Have.......2005-07-01

The Surf Mix of the Pixies is a must-have.. as is Rollins/Brains crushing Kick Out the Jams. And my finest memory of this time.. I hung out in a boring college town (I know- what horrible irony) and the bars all had the same bland, JACKED-UP collection of CD's at the time: classic rock / U2 / Pearl Jam / Matthew Sweet / "new" country... Frat boys wearing polo shirts and playing pool.. smelling like cologne. Well, someone stocked this CD in the jukebox. And when Rollins started screaming "Kick out the JAMS, MOTHERF****!!!" All the vanilla clones would jerk the heads around and wonder how something like THAT! Something they didn't RECOGNIZE! Something they didn't play at their bull**** frat parties could show up in THEIR bar!!! God it was a brief, wonderful moment in a long dark time.

Missing some tracks, but still worth getting.......2004-12-05

I bought this CD in 1990 after seeing the movie. I was looking for one song that was in the film. I went through the disc quickly and when I didn't find the song, I was so annoyed that I didn't listen to the CD again for a while. (The missing song was "Weinerschnitzel" by the Descendents, by the way).

When I did listen to it again, I discovered music from many essential bands of the pre-Nirvana era; back when grunge was still an underground thing. The tracks on here are incredible. I think the Pixies' slow version of "Wave of Mutilation" is worth the purchase price. It is completely different than the Dolittle version; so calming and breezy. Then Soundgarden's "Heretic" jumps out at the listener, a wonderful track that epitomizes their Louder Than Love era.

The Bad Brains and Henry Rollins explosive cover of MC5's pre-punk anthem "Kick Out The Jams" is a needed track for any punk fan. Top off the CD with Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), a Sonic Youth song from their Goo era, and some Concrete Blonde; it was had to be disappointed in this CD that was missing a few great tracks. Basically, if you like the early 90's alternative scene, this is definitely a CD to pick up.

2 stars for 2 GREAT SONGS, handful of good ones..........2004-06-03

...that can be found on other CDs. There's so much that is wrong with this whole Cd and very little that is right. NO Leonard Cohen is just utterly horrid as two of the film's key scenes are basically set to Cohen's "Everybody Knows,' and "If it be your will," perhaps the two best songs he wrote in the 80s. Hell, Everybody Knows is basically the theme song for HHH's show...

The absence of Cohen in a film where his presence is almost channelled is damn near a sin. Furthermore- the Beastie Boys tune is left out. The Ice-T tune is left out. The Descendents tune is left out. They could have packed some more cream onto this, especially as there is so much crud...

Let's get to the bad of this CD. The Peter Murphy song is perhaps the worst thing he's ever done and that's really saying something. Don't get me wrong I swear by bauhaus, but this song is anti-bauhaus music. 'I've got a miniature secret camera,' yeah and i've got a miniature bleeding migraine whenever this song forces me to skip it...

Moving on to the execrable dud "Tale o' the twister'- sample lyric: "I stole a sideways glance at her continental shelf and i knew she was the devil herself," I'd have been embarassed if I scrawled that in the margins of my history notebook in the 8th grade as teen-angsty poetry...

The soundgarden tune sounds exactly the same as every other soundgarden tune, pre-badmotorfinger: indecipherable keening (FLOAT LIKE A LOOOOGGGGGGG!!!!!!!) and churning, muddy guitars... Master Yoda says, "A handful of wails short of unlistenable, this song is."

As for the sole hip hop tune "freedom of Speech;" it's a dated and forgettable 'conscious-rap' from a dated and forgettable group. And I have yet to listen to Liquid Jesus mimic their way through a watered down version of Sly and the fam's 'Stand!' in its entirety. Admittedly it is hard to improve on genius.

OK, that leaves Concrete Blonde's beautiful cover of L. Cohen's "Everybody Knows" (sans the last two verses)." You can find this song on the 'Still in Hollywood,' compilation of B-sides. A good lil CD. And you can get the sonic youth tune, titanium expose (nigh 6 minutes of noise) on their first DGC release, "GOO." Moreover, the Pixies UK Surf version of Wave o' mutilation- it's on any number of pixies comps, and is a b-side on one one of the doolittle singles- either here comes your man or monkey gone to heaven, i believe...

The Ivan Neville tune I can't seem to find anywhere else. Unlike Aaron neville, he doesn't put out lots of albums. 'Why can't i fall in love,' is a great, sad, bluesy, meaty, funky R&B tune. It sweats. So that's one good mark. The Bad Brains/Hank Rollins cover of the MC5's 'Kick out the jams,' is an able-bodied cover of a song that many have attempted and most have failed. It works more because of bad brains frenetic pulse and Dr. Know's guitar insanity (I'm biased here- IMHO Bad brains can do no wrong... except for Rise and God of Love). I don't know if this track is on any other release- so that's the second good thing.

Finally- the Cowboy Junkies version of Robert Johnson's 'Me and the devil blues,' is perhaps their best song. EVER. This coming from A) one of the best bands of the last 20 years and B) a band that excels in covering other artists songs and making them their own. I kow you've heard their 'sweet jane' cover- *yawn*. This song... It is a gypsy-esque orgy of bluesy harmonica, wailing violins, madhatter accordion and the most sublime electric slide guitar solo I have ever heard, all while Margo's voice drifts in and out like the sexiest lost soul since brandon lee donned face paint and died young... So this Cd (used copies abound for about 2 bucks in here...well, plus the 2.50 s&H...) is worth it for the one Cowboy Junkies track alone. To my knowledge this song is not on any album by them (it's not the same slow version that you find on their first album, "Whites Off earth Now).

While I am and always will be a great fan (even despite the horrible shirts slater wears at school) of this rather dated film (saw it '92 as an impressionable 13 year old- it blew my mind and fomented my slater-esque alter ego... yikes), I have to say that the majority of this Cd marks the low-tide point in early 90's soundtracks. And it cudda bin a contenda. Sigh, oh well....

I got this CD for the deliciously noir and pessimistic "Everybody Knows," surely one of the best songs I've ever heard. Concrete Blonde's version far outshine's the master who wrote it, Leonard Cohen. While I really dig Cohen's songs, his version is a bit tinkly with a cheesy synthesiser. Johnette Napolitano brings more menace and the band brings deft muscle to the song.

Although I bought it for "Everybody Knows," it turns out the whole CD is pretty darn good! "Why Can't I Fall in Love" is a good follow-up song and holds its own. Next is a very respectable version of Sly's "Stand!" followed by another big treat on this CD: the Pixies' unplugged slow-wave version of "Wave of Mutilation!"

Unfortunately, Peter Murphy's "I've Got a Secret Miniature Camera" sounds like a second rate Fixx song. What a change from Bauhaus! It's just O.K.

"Kick Out the Jams" has never been my favorite song. Not even the great Bad Brains or Henry Rollins can salvage it for me, although they totally shred. You can definitely rock out to it.

"Freedom of Speech" is a great rap set to a jazzy hip-hop background. An anti-cencorship track with positive points of view.

"Heretic" is some wicked old-school Soundgarden while Sonic Youth contribute a song of driving weirdness that somehow manages to behave like a normal rock song. Well, sort of. How cool that a track this out-there found a place on a popular movie soundtrack. (and obviously, this is about the soundtrack, not the movie . . .)

The Cowboy Junkies' reading of Robert Johnson's creepy "Me and the Devil Blues" is first rate.

More evidence that 4AD was brilliant..........2007-01-28

This was the template for an entire era of production using samples and processors. As a youngster who bought this 12" in 1986-87, I found it to open up an entire world of soundscapes and production concepts.

What I liked even more than PUTV was the little treasure hidden as the B-Side called "Anitina (First Time I See She Dance)". This track was a sharp contrast to the bouncy A-Side hit: dark, moody, and dense with distorted guitars, feedback, and real-time delay treatments. The B-side was more in line with the rest of the progressive and experimental 4ad catalog, and likely was under appreciated by the average consumer of this title. For my 7th grade ears, it was a glimpse into a very creative period for European alternative music.

in 1989, MARRS released Pump Up The Volume, which became a massive hit around the world. It was also the first US / UK top 10 hit to be composed entirely of samples.
Many music writers consider that PUTV inalterably changed the face of pop music. Consider the fact that Rick Astley was one of the biggest artists in the world in 1989, and you will begin to appreciate the impact of this great single.
It is truly a dance music classic, as much a keynote in the history of dance music as Blue Monday by New Order or Autobahn by Kraftwerk.
I am always pleased to see the reactions of first time listeners to this song, most of whom find it difficult to believe that this was released in 1989, not 1999 or even more recently.

The only negative thing I can say about this song is that it sort of paved the way for people like will smith to sample old songs to death without any originality at all, something MARRS definitely have not done with their masterpiece.

There are two sides to the punk coin. On one side, serious and somewhat political acts such as Fugazi are in it for the pulpit. NOFX is firmly stamped on the other side, where it's less soapbox than a threat of getting their mouths washed out with soap. Not since the heyday of the Dead Milkmen has there been a more insincere and politically incorrect punk-rock outfit, and the world is a more entertaining place for it. Pump Up the Valium's lyrics are first-class juvenilia. The backwards fantasy "What's the Matter with Parents Today?" poses a Twilight Zone-like fantasy in which front man fat Mike laments how "Dad's dressing like Motley Crue" and "Mom's hair's dyed bright blue." There are also tracks such as "My Vagina" and "Herojuana," which are pretty self-explanatory. Some might find such nonstop irreverence tedious if the band weren't so tight while being impolite. --Jason Josephes

Which is by far their WORST cd. You want to know an essential NOFX cd? The Decline. Okay, as for this CD, has one or two good songs, and the rest is just white noise. Don't buy the newer stuff either, it's terrible. Stick with the oldies.

not really worth the space in your cd collection.......2006-06-21

as of lately, i have been going through my cd collection looking for albums that would be better ripped onto itunes than sitting in my cd book. i came across this album and listened to it. this cd is great for nostalgia as a green day album is, but it really has no longevity. this is defiantely competing for the worst NOXF cd title....luckily, they somewhat picked up the pace with war on errorism and finally put out the masterpiece known as the almighty Wolves in Wolves Clothing....yes..WIWC deserves capital letters!

dinosaurs will die is either the best piece of self hypocrisy, or a sign of the band's stupidity...this album basically proves why Nofx should stick to humor and satire over bad religion-ish politics.

if your going to buy this, i recommend getting it used and ripping it to your computer and then selling it.

great CD.......2005-07-22

When I bought this CD i wasn't expecting it to top punk in drublic. however that had been wearing pretty thin in my stereo so I got this. I wasn't disappointed. the style of this CD is fast paced, 100 mph punk- without the political slant they now have. the songs range from the funny 'clams have feelings to' to just fantastically played ones such as 'dinasours will die.' I highly reccomend this CD- it epitomises NOFX for me, before they jumped on the political bandwagon. Punk in drublic also highly reccomended!

This is a great CD but it doesn't quit get 5 stars. This Cd has many of my favorite NOFX songs on it though. It includes my all time favorite,"Dinosaurs will die". It too has the hysterical song,"Thank god it's Monday". And who could forget that classic,"My V****a". This Cd is very good but Punk in Drublic is the best!

I was shocked to see my home DJ only provide his fans a 1-disc mix. Benny Benassi is a world renowned DJ who has provided us with some chart-busting tunes, and his musical knowledge and scope is nothing small either. It would have been nice to see a 2-disc mix set showing a bit more than this. I mean, with all of the club music in the world, both past and present (and even future), this certainly doesn't reflect all that has happened. It would be nice to see something similar to Defected's "In The House" Series, where the DJ's give us the best of the past and present.

His tour in Canada is bound to promise some susprises for his fans there, but the CD here just didn't seem to have any suprises to support it. I have heard review from friends who went to UV Nation in Malaysia, where he was performing, and they told me that they were not impressed, that his mixing seemed second-rate and nothing special (but I still refuse to believe them on this).

I hope to see some better compilations in the future.

Having established their reputation as Comeback Kids with 1987's Permanent Vacation, Aerosmith proceeded to cement it with 1989's Pump. With hit singles like the expectedly raunchy "Love in an Elevator" and the unexpectedly socially relevant "Janie's Got a Gun" (which, unlike most socially relevant songs by hard rock bands, manages to avoid the cheese factor), Pump was proof positive that the boys were back. Everything that makes Aerosmith what they are is present here: a solid bluesy base, tight arrangements, sexy rhythms, and a heavy dose of fun. I give credit to Aerosmith...after so many years of writing by themselves to realize that in order to stay on top of the game they needed some outside contributions I'm sure was not an easy thing to admit
but thankfully they did and the results were some of the greatest music not only of the late 80s early 90s but possibly some of the best in rock

I know,I am in the minority liking this period of Aerosmith far more than classic 70s era Aerosmith but I'm sorry the classic stuff was full of hit or miss albums,usually 2 or 3 great songs and 5 or so ho hum cuts...not so on Permanent Vacation,Get A Grip,Nine Lives or this one Pump...this is pure songwriting genius,and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry and the rest of the band function perfectly when in the framework of very well written song structures
Young Lust - a great rocking tribute to the best thing about being young
F.I.N.E - this one is awesome,should have been a single,great lyrics too
Love In An Elevator - yeah it was overplayed,but there's a reason,it is that darn good! This song rocks and to all the Desmond Child haters out there I say this,in 50 years his songs will STILL be appreciated and sung and how many Nirvana songs will anyone remember? Enough said..Love In An Elevator has clever lyrics and a melody so powerful it will stick with ya for days
Monkey On My Back - a bit more of the classic sounding Aerosmith,good tune

Few musicans can produce works that leave their audience speechless, and Aerosmith is one of them. Pump treats us to such classics as Love In An Elevator and Janie's Got A Gun, but this is also brings us wonders like Young Lust (with its air of youthfulness), Don't Get Mad, Get Even (with Tyler working some magic on the harmonica), and What It Takes (with its melancholic tune of bad break ups and moving on). Get this CD and you'll see what I mean. If you enjoy it, then good for you. If you don't, then you might need to seek some sort of psychiatric help. If you do get psychiatric help and still don't like this album, then I suppose that Aerosmith just isn't your thing.

What an awesome album!! Every song is so great. Aerosmith has never been better than this. You definitely NEED this album. There are so many songs you'll find catchy and funny. The other cool thing about this album is that it's after steven tyler quit drugs so it should be interesting to anyone. Buy this album PLEASE!

2 best songs: My Girl & What it Takes

Not F.I.N.E. but pretty G.O.O.D. anyway.......2005-02-07

While I'm not into metal, I do enjoy some good hard rock every now and again. Steven Tyler's crew, at least on this CD, are a lot better than much hard rock in that it dares to mess with the "bass/guitar/drums" formula.

Among the unusual instrumentation/ideas you'll hear here are: the subtle accordion (PERHAPS it's harmonica, since Tyler is credited with that, but the liner notes are almost non-existent, and it SOUNDS like accordion to my ears..) on bluesy ballad "What it Takes", dulcimer and banjo ("Dulcimer Stomp"), Australian didjeridoo at the intro to "Don't Get Mad, Get Even", and the guitar solo on "The Other Side" that sounds like a crazed Sun records era rockabilly solo. These things elevate it above other 80s hard-rockers that don't wear well with time (Tesla, Warrant, etc.)

Another surprise is a rock band actually taking an ANTI-drug stance (probably through hard experience as several members once had serious drug habits..) in "Monkey on my Back". "Janie's Got a Gun" drew attention to parent sexual abuse of their children.

Now, the downside: As you'd expect from the cover, an awful lot of these songs deal with sex, which isn't in and of itself so bad, but given the ages of the guys singing, there's a big creepiness factor to songs like "Young Lust" (with gems like "checkin' out the ladies who didn't bring their boyfriends who love to get in trouble, I got to say I'll see you later, meet me in the elevator...") and "F.I.N.E." ("Let's put our clothes back on, and by the way girl..What's your name again?"). They also tend to undercut the serious message in "Janie's Got a Gun" (sure, "Janie's" dad was making it with his daughter, but for crying out loud, the skirts Aerosmith's chasing in "Young Lust" are SOMEONE'S young daughters!)

At least in "My Girl" the testosterone factor is leavened with a witty line ("day after day it's the same ol' grind...and grind..and grind..and grind..and grind..."). As it is, the album's still very listenable and holds up well nearly 15 years later.

This one is right behind TOYS and ROCKS!!!.......2002-09-20

PUMP is in my opinion AEROSMITH'S third best album behind TOYS and ROCKS, and that is saying alot. From the start of YOUNG LUST with is balls to the walls, full speed ahead rock, to the folk-blues outro to WHAT IT TAKES, the band found the roots once again and shows all the younger bands of the era how it really is done. The band shows even though they are clean and sober, they havent lost their BAD-BOYS FROM BOSTON edge. LOVE IN AN ELEVATOR, JAMIE'S GOT A GUN, MY GIRL, THE OTHER SIDE, MONKEY ON MY BACK, FINE every song here is great and this is an album that I find myself going back to and listening to even after 13 years or so. Some might say the band soldout and got soft, but I cant find any of that on this album. This is an essential for any serious music fans collection.

Here Be Monsters finds singer/songwriter Ed Harcourt developing the gentle melancholy of his previous efforts. "God Protect Your Soul" combines anguished, rambling lyrics ("I need to build a wall around me") and an off-kilter melody with bluesy harmonica and trumpets to create something akin to what Elliot Smith might make sitting at the piano. "Beneath the Heart of Darkness" starts in a similar fashion before slipping into a mash of guitars and radio interference, then drifting back again to a gentle lullaby. While "Apple of My Eye" starts with a quiet but buoyant proclamation--"I'm sick of this angst"--it quickly becomes clear that Harcourt isn't really so positive. This is one for all those who appreciate music that's full of understated despair. --Caroline Butler

Ed Harcourt is a gifted songwriter with a pleasant voice and a knack for writing great melodies. he had some hype leading up to his recording (which cn be misleading, at times) but thankfully, Here Be Monsters is a solid deut album. the influences of Beatles, Big Star, Jackson Browne are all pretty good reference points, but Harcourt has his own sound and has a few surprises up his sleeve. most noteably in the mini-epic "Heart Of Darkness" song, which features a strange and noisy interlude that segways back into the song's spooky melody. "She Fell Into My Arms" and "Shanghai" are perfect pop songs with impeccable timing and irresistable hooks. there's really not a bad track on here...some are moody and sad, some are upbeat but it's all a joy to discover.

Chinese Weather.......2005-06-01

"Here Be Monsters" is an inventive set from this prolific English songwriter. The calling card for the CD is the silly & addictive "Shanghai" with its music hall piano parts, electric guitar jabs, and sighing harmonies, "Let's move away together, go interplanetary, maybe in Chinese weather where it's sanitary." "Those Crimson Tears" with cello and piano is one of the saddest songs, but beautiful for its profound grief. Harcourt is tremendously interesting for his melodic inventiveness and the vast range of instruments he uses to evoke different moods & feelings. "Beneath the Heart of Darkness" shows his expressive vocals and offers an Asian-flavored melody, "The roots of the house are cracking, caving in; There's no way out, it's trapped in." While all of the tracks don't work equally well, "Here Be Monsters" is never boring. Enjoy!

Outstanding album.......2004-07-17

I first found out about Ed Harcourt when I read a review in some magazine. It made an impression and I looked for the album but couldn't find it in retail stores. I forgot about it. A year later a friend sent me a CD-R that he said I had to hear. The name rang a bell and so did the title. I really, really liked it. It combined elements of prog, alternative and a unique soup that had its own taste. It was "Here Be Monsters" by Ed Harcourt.

Harcourt's rich melodies and unusual arrangements make this album a unique experience. While it doesn't sound like anything by Brian Eno, it sounds like something Eno might have done if he had thought of it. Harcourt's whisper of a baritone voice with hints of the smokey qualities of Chris Rea immediately draw you into the melodies and the lyrics he's singing. The music is deceptive on the surface; many of the songs are as calm as a pool of water on a still, winter day while others have the undercurrent of a raging river.

I purchased this album and the follow up. It's no wonder he was nominated for the Mercury prize. He didn't win which is a crime but, unlike many of those artists that win Grammys as "best new artist" that disappear within weeks of winning, Harcourt's music will continue to improve and make an impression even if its on a small hardcore group of fans. I can't describe Harcourt's music any better so listen to the clips to get an idea of what you'll be missing before you forget.

This is the stuff of religious proclamations! Top draw stuff, sad piano, up tempo horns, some cool loops and great lyrics...awaiting sphers with baited breath. I would compare (although not in style) to Sea Change by Beck for album greatness.

Here Be Monsters.......2003-11-29

Harcourt fits very nicely into the Bacharachian (like Bacchanalian?) singer-songwriters - those who know how to use trumpet flourishes, glockenspiel and tack piano refrains, and harmony vocals correctly. Though well-received in Europe and a Mercury Music Prize nominee, Harcourt seems to have had difficulty breaking through in America with little critical acclaim and hasn't amassed anything more than a cult audience. His opening spot for Neil Finn's club tour this summer should help him out as the two have similar melodic and rhythmic ideas. "Hanging With The Wrong Crowd" could've been written by Finn himself. Fave tracks: "Something In My Eye," "Apple Of My Eye," "Like Only Lovers Can." (originally written May 2002)
